Today, Politico’s Arena asked several foreign policy experts, “Who should Obama consider for his foreign policy and national security team?” Brookings Institution analyst and Iraq war hawk Michael O’Hanlon said that Obama needs a cabinet member who is skeptical of a timeline for withdrawal:
It is important that Senator Obama hear from centrists on Iraq, and Susan [Rice] may not be such a person on that subject. As such, given Iraq’s relative importance, it is crucial that in addition to military officers with responsibility for the operation there, at least one key member of the cabinet not be firmly wed to Senator Obama’s ill-advised proposal for a firm and rapid withdrawal schedule from Iraq over the coming 16 to 18 months.
HAHAHAHA….O’HANLON
THE GUY WHO IS AND WAS CONSISTENTLY WRONG?
YEAH RIGHT……
NEXT!
November 12th, 2008 at 4:57 pmDon’t bother submitting your resume, O’Hanlon.
November 12th, 2008 at 4:57 pmYes — and to be perfectly fair, Obama should make sure that there be a token idiot instead of just going with intelligent people.

November 12th, 2008 at 5:01 pmO’hanlon’s a fool….and I’m pro timeline, but there’s probably nothing wrong (and everything right) about including people in your cabinet that have different opinions. Sort of like Lincoln’s “Team of Rivals” a la Doris Kearns Goodwin, as opposed to GW’s “team of only those who already agree with me.”
November 12th, 2008 at 5:01 pmOh yeah, let’s follow the failed policies of the “chicken hawks” into the next administration by all means. It certainly has worked so far. Better yet, let’s keep all the neocons in their present jobs so we can can some more that winning game plan in Iraq.

Just a friendly piece of advice for you:
Before you pompously plop some piece of off-topic blather in a thread, you should really try reading it to make sure it backs up whatever silly point you’re trying to make.
Here, because you totally misread the chart, you have just provided evidence that the countries who practice MORE socialism have less poverty than the ones who don’t.
Sweden is at the top because it has LESS poverty — not more.

Of course, any actual socialists will tell you that the “socialist” nations on that list are nothing of the sort – they’re at best capitalist hybrids with some socialist tendencies.
Even in the most “socialist” countries, there’s still plenty of inequality and poverty. Very socialist policies such as farm subsidies and price controls can also worsen povertyin developing nations. So it’s not a panacea.
Over-reliance on government can lead to dire economic consequences just as much as over-reliance on the free market. The happy medium is somewhere in the middle, and I think this country can find it if we just get over this paralyzing fear of socialism.
That’s my 2 bits.

What is the prevailing opinion from Obama’s supporters about the whispers (more than whispers now) that President-elect Obama plans on keeping Robert Gates in place at the Pentagon?
I hated Rumsfeld as much as the next guy, but I think that Crocker, Petreaus, and Gates have turned things around for the better in Iraq, though there is obviously a long way to go.
November 12th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
_______
Gates is a smarter guy than Rumsfeld, but he’s no saint. I think Obama could do a lot better than keep one of the Iran-Contra veterans around for nostalgia’s sake. I’d like to see Chuck Hagel in the job, personally.
And I really don’t see what Gates, Petraeus, and Crocker have done in Iraq, except for create a Potemkin Country in which the number of car bombings is down. Reduced car bombings doesn’t actually translate to having a stable and viable government in place. All the surge did was put a really really really big band-aid over a gaping wound of ethnic cleansing, balkanization, corporate pilfering, and militia-building.
November 12th, 2008 at 5:38 pm#47 – Nettles, I actually don’t have a problem with Gates staying for a short time, maybe three months or so. He’s such a vast improvement over Rumsfeld, and has actually (I think) done a pretty good job of cleaning up some bad situations. There’s certainly pros and cons about Petraeus staying on as commander of the U.S. Central Command. Odierno deserves a second look, whether or not he should stay on as the Commanding General in Iraq. The bottom line is whether or not Obama believes that he can work with these guys. I was more impressed with Crocker early-on in his tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, then it seemed to me that he began to parrot the Bush mantra. Under the right President, he might be terrific.

November 12th, 2008 at 5:46 pmI now see a few comments that uhhhbama is actually showing the human development index. The Scandinavian countries also have the highest disposal incomes and the highest happiness factor. Sweden also has one of the highest longevity rates, lowest illiteracy rates, lowest unemployment rates (long tern less that 1%), the list goes on and on with these countries. The trashing of our constitution, torture, illegal spying on American citizens, disregard for the rule of law, perpetrated be the likes of George Bush and his conservative cohorts would have never happened in these countries. Uhhhbama’s mis-information and attitude for not caring about the facts is about the most un-American you can get.
