The Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson reports that the EPA’s final decision-making board has ruled that a proposed coal-fired power plant in Utah must have its carbon dioxide emissions regulated. The decision overturns an earlier decision by the EPA to grant a permit without considering its effects on global warming. The ruling will likely impact other coal plant permit cases as well. The 69-page decision described the Bush administration’s arguments opposing CO2 regulation as “weak,” “questionable,” “not sustainable,” and “not sufficient.”
Bush’s EPA made this ruling? Is this April 1st? Or didn’t the company provide enough of an ‘incentive’?
November 13th, 2008 at 8:30 pmThe 69-page decision described the Bush administration’s arguments opposing CO2 regulation as “weak,” “questionable,” “not sustainable,” and “not sufficient.”
Now that’s a legacy.
November 13th, 2008 at 8:32 pmWow, that is great news! Especially considering who’s EPA this still is and the fact that this ruling is going to have an impact on further permitting these plants.
November 13th, 2008 at 8:46 pm“…must have its carbon dioxide emissions regulated.”
By which they really mean the plant must physically produce less C02 than existing plants, right?
November 13th, 2008 at 9:10 pmBecause regulations alone have a funny way of being written by industry lobbyists, and inspection/compliance has a funny way of being under-financed.
Amazing. We’re killing off whales and dolphins by rupturing their eardrums in the name of defending ourselves, but the EPA is going to slow down dirty coal before we get a sane administration! Be still, my heart!
November 13th, 2008 at 9:34 pmWhoa… who grew a pair at the EPA?
Prolly someone who’d like to ***keep their job*** in the new Admin…
November 13th, 2008 at 10:12 pmCan we focus on the real problems associated with coal? Namely the blight of coal mining and mountaintop removal on the landscape and environment.
November 13th, 2008 at 10:38 pmWait a minute, “weak,” “questionable,” “not sustainable,” and “not sufficient”? That’s how my wife described our honeymoon! Who have they been talking to?
November 13th, 2008 at 10:42 pmWell, it’s already begun. The environmental wackos and true believers in man-made global warming will wreak absolute HAVOC on our economy.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that OBama got elected after all because it’s likely that about the same percentage of Americans who voted for him also believe in the man-made global warming nonsense as well!
One thing is for sure, America is headed for ultimate destruction as an economic power and a free Republic because it’s citizens are too intellectually lazy to recognize truth from fiction, right from wrong and good from evil.
November 14th, 2008 at 12:51 amHi Tim Vaculik.
November 14th, 2008 at 12:55 amIs global climate a concern of yours?
So once again despite the US Military’s thoughts on the challenges of global climate disruption, the actions of the insurance companies, the standing congressional committess related to, UN cooperation on, the consensus of the science community, and on and on, our friend the cyber no one knows better….Priceless
November 14th, 2008 at 1:04 amCollectively, we are a pathetic excuse for a free society. We have squandered the precious freedoms won and maintained throughout our history as a nation.
America is but a shadow of it’s former self because America is really just an ideal; a noble experiment that must be maintained by blood and sacrifice through the exercise of maintaining liberty.
It seems that most citizens today are content to be lead like sheep and spoon fed lies masquerading as truth. Case in point: man-made global warming! What an absolute farce, yet people buy it hook, line and sinker. Then they readily allow all manner of destructive laws and regulations to be put in place that will DESTROY their economic freedom and thus undermine any remaining freedoms that are left.
It’s almost too depressing to think about. I will predict here and now that if this trend continues, we will not even recognize our own country within the span of ten years.
We will look back and woinder how it all happened. Look no further than within yourselves for the answer.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:05 amThe truth is out there for those who will seek it; for those with an open mind and a curiosity to discover truth amidst all the noise and confusion.
Good night.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:08 amWithin yourselves are blood and guts and a couple of dozen Slim Jims. Spare my the trite drivel unless of course you authored it. If that’s the case we can discuss literary styles and the joy you find in prose…
November 14th, 2008 at 1:08 am“I will predict here and now that if this trend continues, we will not even recognize our own country within the span of ten years.”
Yeah it was weird, when I was a kid my school didn’t have any computers. Within ten years it had a whole bunch. The report cards were even printed and not lettered in by the individual teacher with a ballpoint. It was weird. I didn’t even recognize it…
November 14th, 2008 at 1:11 amOut leagued?
November 14th, 2008 at 1:11 amI don’t want to end on a downer so here goes.
On the bright side, it has been announced that environmentalists of all stripes along with our new President are pushing for the quick approval and construction of new power plants to meet the needs of our nation. They have announced support for the building of enough nuclear power plants to supply 70% of our country’s energy needs by the year 2016!
November 14th, 2008 at 1:13 am“just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion”
November 14th, 2008 at 1:14 amand Tim Vaculik being has offered up his backyard for both a new plant and a long term waste storage site. The nation gathers to honor him…
November 14th, 2008 at 1:17 amThis is part of the massive paradigm shift that’s going on.
All but the stupidest wingers realize they’ve been full of sh*t all along. Even Allan Greenspan has realized life is not an Ayn Rand novel.
November 14th, 2008 at 6:10 amTimmy says: “It seems that most citizens today are content to be lead like sheep and spoon fed lies masquerading as truth. Case in point: man-made global warming! So you think that all the scientists who say that global warming IS man-made know less that you do? That they are wrong and you, so highly “edjewmacated” as you are in that field, with such an open mind and curiosity, know more than they? That the Kyoto treaty that other countries support is a bunch of bunk used to undermine our economy?
You are completely kidding, right? Because otherwise you would have to be out of your mind.
The only truth out there for you is only that which YOU want to hear (and stop ripping off the X-Files)
November 14th, 2008 at 6:31 amBy the way, Timmy, where are your links? You NEVER provide proof of your misstatements. Nuclear power plants were supported by whom and when would be my case in point.
Loosen up the tinfoil, it’s impeding your blood flow again.
November 14th, 2008 at 6:36 amTim Vaculik must have missed the memo that reports the scientific consensus is clear, and that 98% of scientists overwhelmingly agree over the existence of anthropogenic climate chance.
Wait… that wasn’t on a memo, its common knowledge. If he think he’s a ‘truthseeker’ maybe he should seek the truth in the hundreds of scientific journals that support anthropogenic climate change, rather than seeking the truth at Fox News or on a climate change denier website.
The only reason Tim terms people environmental whackos and doesn’t “believe in” anthropogenic climate change is because he’s a sucker for right wing rhetoric. Its the only place I have seen millions of people brainlessly follow empty terms and phrases based purely on how they make one feel, rather than simple logic and independent problem solving.
Tim, anthropogenic climate change isn’t under debate anymore within the scientific community. If you took your own advice and did some real factchecking at a LIBRARY where they have records of REAL scientific RESEARCH rather than in the media (which is the LAST place anyone should go for scientific facts)you would pretty quickly come to the same conclusion smart, logical, AWARE people have already come to. However, if you want to keep basing your beliefs off of your predetermined likeness toward liberals, and the those things they are traditionally associated with, you can. But that won’t stop the fact that you have clearly become detached from reality.
November 14th, 2008 at 10:08 amProgressive Veteran,
Sorry, there is no scientific “consensus” and I have no idea where you get that.
In fact, there is much debate in the scientific community in this regard. I gues it depends also on which “scientists” you consult.
I prefer to read as much as I can from eminent CLIMATE scientists, or climatologists if you will.
Try doing a little research, will ya?
November 14th, 2008 at 9:37 pmLone Voice,
My pronouncement about nuclear energy was tongue-in-cheek. SNL, you know.
It’s pretty clear that environmentalists are against EVERY form of power generation. If a lot of them have their way, we’ll be rubbing sticks together for heat.
November 14th, 2008 at 9:38 pmHere are a few assertions I can make with 100% confidence they can’t be refuted:
1. No models exist that can predict future global temperatures with an acceptable standard of accuracy.
2. People that say they can predict what global temperatures will do are engaged in one or more of the following – using flawed models that cannot even predict historical temperatures when known data is input; guessing; or deliberately throwing out assertions that can’t be backed up in otrder to further their own agendas.
3. Al Gore’s movie was so full of innacuracies and outright falsehoods that it was banned from being taught in school. (Btitish I think)
Anyone care to tacke the above?
November 14th, 2008 at 9:44 pmTim,
November 15th, 2008 at 12:21 amYou have still failed to show how a cyber nobody might possible know that which the US military, the industry, the US Senate, The Un and on does not. I call total bullshit upon your bullshit. Are you really suggesting that you know more than the US military? What a bunch of crap…
dbadass,
Get off the “US Military” thing will ya? They are only responding to information, not doing any research about the climate itself! What I’m saying is that the information they are using in their scenario planning is flawed.
November 16th, 2008 at 11:49 amOkay so let’s go to the standing congressional committees is that all false stuff too? What about the fact that the Bush administration itself is on record acknowledging the threat of climate? How can you honestly think that you somehow are more learned regarding the topic?
