The media haven’t been able to get enough Palin 2012 speculation in the run-up to her speech today at the Republican Governors Association (RGA) convention. In almost every interview with GOP governors over the past couple days, hosts have been asking them their thoughts on a future presidential run by Palin. These governors, however, have been less than enthusiastic to embrace Palin as their future candidate:
CNN: So let me ask you point blank, governor. Is she the future of the party?
MARK SANFORD (SC): I don’t think I’d define it that way. [11/13/08]TIM PAWLENTY (MN): She [Palin] is going to be one of the voices that will help lead the party for months and years to come, clearly. … I also think it is too early to be talking about 2012. My goodness, we just had an election. People are sick of that. [MSNBC, 11/12/08]
FOX: What do you think her future is?
HALEY BARBOUR (MS): Well, I think the future she’s talking about is 2009 and 2010. [11/13/08]MATT BLUNT (MO): I think Republican governors were surprised when she [Palin] was selected, but at the same time they were impressed. … There are a lot of great candidates out there for 2012. I don’t think the American people want to — want to hear much about that at this point.[Fox News, 11/13/08]
MSNBC: So broad hints there from Palin again today with reporters, certainly with Matt Lauer. Is that the solution?
JON HUNTSMAN (UT): The solutions are going to be many-fold. You can’t look to one personality in particular. [11/12/08]
Watch a compilation:
Yesterday at the RGA convention, many of these same governors and other top GOP figures were reluctant to say that they would have been comfortable with Palin as president.
Some leading conservatives may also be getting jealous of all the attention Palin is receiving. When Newt Gingrich — who is also rumored to be eyeing a 2012 run — was on Fox’s Hannity and Colmes last night, he listed the names of governors who have the potential to “rebuild” the GOP. Gingrich never once mentioned Palin’s name until Hannity pointed out that he had been one of her earliest backers. Gingrich simply replied, “Well, she’s now become, in many ways, a national figure. I’m curious to see what she’ll decide to do.”
Please…no more Palin.
November 13th, 2008 at 1:54 pmA vote for Palin is a vote for the Dark Ages. Some future indeed…
November 13th, 2008 at 1:56 pmI agree Fritz…enough of Palin already. She is back in Alaska where she belongs!

November 13th, 2008 at 2:03 pm“GOP Governors Reluctant To Embrace Palin For 2012: She Is Not ‘The Future Of The Party’”
Oh yes she is! HAHAHAHA. The GOP put this debacle in motion and now you have to live with the massive ego you have unleashed. Talk about an albatross. She is ALL YOURS!!!
November 13th, 2008 at 2:03 pmUh-oh…somebody better tell God that.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:04 pmPalin is making the most of her current exposure, but she’s not in a position to sustain that for much longer. In retrospect, I think the only reason she got any enthusiasm at all from Republicans, beyond the red meat religious and racist Right, was that she really did provide a huge contrast to the series of boring old men the Republicans ran out during the primaries. Mittens may not be “old” but he’s certainly boring and the rest of the candidates were such a tired bunch of hacks that it’s no wonder Republicans voters were unenthusiastic.
Palin benefited initially from the mere fact that no one knew who the hell she was, because she was relatively young, and because the hardcore loves all that fundamentalist anti-choice rhetoric.

“A surprising moment occurred late this afternoon in a press roundtable featuring Govs. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Jon Huntsman of Utah, former Ebay CEO and McCain national campaign co-chairman Meg Whitman, and former OMB Director Rob Portman.
A reporter asked whether they would have felt comfortable with Palin as president. After a moment of awkward silence, there were several answers given—but no one said “yes.””

November 13th, 2008 at 2:11 pmToo bad Atilla not around any more.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:13 pmWhen will someone call her out on the lobbiest she hired
November 13th, 2008 at 2:17 pmto get 27 million for the small town that she ended up leaving
19 million in debt. How her husbands membership in the AIP?
And what’s the status of that 40 billion pipeline?
And I thought she went after those “corrupt republicans”
but I guess that doesn’t apply to Ted Stevens?
I would bet that half the people who voted for McCan’t
were voting for JM hoping he would survive for four years
and the other half hoping he wouldn’t.
It’s funny watching the way the Republicans squirm as they try to both justify nominating Palin as their VP Choice while at the same time trying to push her to the background because they know she doesn’t have the skills or knowledge to be a player on the national level.
Let’s just hope the monster doesn’t escape from the lab….

_________________________________________________________
Agreed, but it’s going to be interesting to see how long she can stretch out her fifteen minutes of fame.
I find that the more she talks, and the more exposure she gets, the sillier the evangelical bible-thumper wing of the GOP looks (not to mention the “yee-haws” — the ones who only care about flag-waving and waging war). Which is going to do one of two things — it will either contribute to further GOP losses in the 2010 midterms, or the rest of the GOP will take it upon themselves to distance themselves from these goons, and effectively cut them out of the party by not caving in to their demands.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:19 pmMuch as I hate to be fair to Palin, she’s at the mercy of some serious conflicts of interest here. With the exception of Blunt, all the governors quoted have eyes for the ‘12 or ‘16 nominations themselves, so of course they’re not going to anoint her as the future of the party.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:21 pmHopefully, the Goopers will realize she (and McIIIrd) sunk the ship with her dropping anchor in the reef…
November 13th, 2008 at 2:21 pmTrig needs her a hell of a lot more than we don’t.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:25 pmI take some heart from this:
November 13th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
She was polling at 18% of Republican approval (or something equivalent) right after this election. As much as I say “bring it on”, it’s not going to be her. It will be Mitt Romney in 2012… and I’m pretty sure Obama will be on the defense from Clinton from within the party as well.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:32 pmI think the stupid even hurts Their brains, what little they have.

November 13th, 2008 at 2:37 pmAny bets that they’ll throw in the towel and nominate a cardboard cutout of reagan in 2012 ?
November 13th, 2008 at 2:44 pmMost media sources are now talking about Palin 2012.
That’s crazy when you think that Bush is still in office for another 67 days, and Obama was not sworn in as a President yet.
She made herself a name because of McCain’s selection of her as his VP nominee.
Sarah will realize how hard it is to win a party’s nomination next time around on her own.
Let’s focus first on this election of last week and Obama’s presidency before we start to fantasise about Palin in 2012.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:44 pmHey Sarah, about those medical records…oh yeah, and what about that lakeside house that was allegedly built with materials and workers that built your precious over priced hockey rink. If Sarah thinks that the media put her under a harsh vetting spotlight this time around just wait to see what can be dug up in the next four years. She’ll be lucky to avoid prison time much less worry about some DC pipe dream. Do yourself and the rest of America a favor and disappear into obscurity you emptyheaded snowbilly.
November 13th, 2008 at 2:57 pmShe’s not!?
I was really sort of hoping she’d run again in 2012….
I was hoping she would have gone full swing with all the common-place right-wing talking points, bashing immigrants, minorities, gays, non-Christians, you know, the “not real Americans”.
::sigh::
November 13th, 2008 at 2:58 pmWhy isn’t Palin the future?
November 13th, 2008 at 3:07 pmMaybe it’s because she is a compulsive and pathological liar and she pals around with witch doctors and Secessionists!
Bible Spice’s only hope is that she will remain remote from the infighting already starting after the election. But she’s far more likely to continue making a spectacle of herself.

November 13th, 2008 at 3:19 pmWhy is Faux news talking to William Shatner about Sarah Palin?
November 13th, 2008 at 3:25 pmOf course the Repub Governor’s Conference attendee’s aren’t going to back her – that thing is the Thunderdome of the Repub primary of 2012. There are plenty of folks there who want the nod in 2012, why would they endorse Palin?
As to Palin, she can retire into obscurity, do her best as Alaska Governor or run for Stevens Senate seat when he is forced to resign. If the first, there is a $10 million book deal waiting for her and she won’t have to work a day in her life again. If the second, she keeps her day job and her options open. If the third, she is pretty much declaring herself a candidate for 2012.
This, written 9 days after the close of the 2008 election. Sigh.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:29 pmWilliam Shatner will lead the GOP to the final frontier.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:37 pmKeltoi Says:
I second the sigh. Right now it Stevens is more than 800 votes BEHIND in Alaska and the vote is trending against him so the Senate seat looks to be going to the Dem. In 2004 it looked like Lieberman in 08. Four years is an eternity in politics.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:40 pm“The Borgen Project has some good info on the cost of addressing global poverty.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:49 pm$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.

Palin – so illiterate she can’t even use the English language in a way that shows respect to someone running for office: “betcha”, “doncha”, “jerks”, “stinkers”, etc. She sounds like a child. What an embarrassment to the U.S. if this dishonest, ignorant woman ever obtained a high office. The U.S. would be a laughing stock. Remember, she can’t even name any newspapers or books she reads. Oh, and she promotes hatred. Nice characteristics for a VP! Republicans who continue to adore this vindictive, two-faced, & clueless woman really need to examine if they ever want to win anything again. She is not the way to anyone’s positive future.

November 13th, 2008 at 5:17 pmThe Republicans with any sense say she’s not the one for 2012 – but they may not be in charge of their own party any more. It seems to have been taken over by the social extremists who care not for anything other than their narrow perspective, and their desire to inflict it upon the rest of us.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:28 pmYes, there were other choices for VP which could have been a winning ticket. Why is that after she was a drag on McCain’s ticket she wants to run on her own?
