Today, President-elect Barack Obama announced that he will be giving up his Senate seat, effective on Sunday. “It has been one of the highest honors and privileges of my life to have served the people of Illinois in the United States Senate,” Obama said in a statement. The Chicago Tribune notes that the news puts added pressure on Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) to name a replacement for Obama, who is currently the only African-American senator.
Gotta wonder if the Gov is listening to suggestions from a certain PresElect (Not Huckabee!)

– - Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. would be some kinda symmetry, eh Rev.?
November 13th, 2008 at 3:23 pmSorry I misread your post. Duh, need to get some coffee. Mea Culpa. Jesse jr would be a GREAT choice
November 13th, 2008 at 3:29 pmI dont believe Jesse Jackson jr is a Rev. He is however a proud liberal and a very effective politician. I would APPLAUD him being appointed to the Senate.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:29 pmI’d put my money on triple-J, since he’s got the most name recognition. I’m also glad that Obama’s going to be working on the transition full time.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:36 pmYou only resign from the senate for two reasons, either in disgrace or to take a better job.
How many republicans have resigned in disgrace?
November 13th, 2008 at 3:37 pmThese criminals don’t belong in control of things.
Barack Obama’s economic adviser, Austan Goolsbee, is a member of the Skull and Bones Secret Society.
Other members of Skull and Bones include Prescott Bush, Bush Sr, Bush Jr, and John Kerry.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:37 pmOh, cool. A New World Order troll…. don’t see many of those around anymore…

November 13th, 2008 at 3:45 pmcb, it’s just a fraternity of goof balls. Got anything to point to a crime or act committed by them?
November 13th, 2008 at 3:48 pmmy god you people better wake up already.
We did, that’s why Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:49 pmWhy did Bush Sr call for a New World Order on September 11, 1990?
George W Bush quote: “If this were a dictatorship, it’d be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I’m the dictator.”
November 13th, 2008 at 3:50 pmIt turns out that Bush’s grandfather Prescott conspired to overthrow the Constitution, assassinate FDR, and turn the United States into a Nazi Camp. Here’s the July 2007 BBC report.
This video of investigative journalist John Buchanan details the documents discovered at the National Archives and Library of Congress implicating Prescott.
November 13th, 2008 at 3:50 pmBoth McCain and Obama voted FOR the unconstitutional bailout bill.
The $700B bailout bill is Unconstitutional.

Maybe if he quits consulting the face on mars on political issues, not before.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:02 pmdon’t know about Reagan, but take a look at these centuries-old paintings.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:03 pmThis is a fairly sensible move on Obama’s part. First — he has his hands full at the moment, and he can’t really devote any time to Senate business. Second, by resigning his seat before his inauguration, Blagojevich’s appointee will get a jump on seniority over the rest of the freshman class coming in January.

November 13th, 2008 at 4:28 pmCB don’t take it personally. Your heart’s in the right place and in a way you’re preaching to the choir, but most have kind of grown out of the hysterical nature of it all… maybe i’m speaking for myself, but that is, until there is some actual evidence to support any of the claims… something more than circumstancial evidence taped together like a 4th grade science project.
A few things to keep in mind are that 1) Not everything is necessarily connected (in some nefarious manner) 2) there is SOME truth sprinkled in there 3) discern the truth from the mass of misinformation because once you go down the rabbit hole you don’t necessarily have to buy everything you see there. 4) and most importantly, everything’s going to be okay.

November 13th, 2008 at 4:51 pmCB, regarding the Skull and Bones: I am very suspicious of the fraternity and its rules of secrecy and loyalty.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:21 pmAs for Obama and Goolsbee, I think having someone high up on the staff who is a member of S&B would not be a problem — he knows the way around and could be helpful without compromising those arcane rules.
I am happy to relinquish the Senator from Illinois to the White House — as for his replacement, JJ,JR. is a good choice — he has name recognition and has made a name for himself apart from his father.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:24 pmBut my heart lies with Tammy Duckworth, the Iraq veteran, who I met at a gathering a couple of years ago — she’s smart, she’s gained recognition across the country, and she is deserving of the advancement.
I hope the Gov. makes a choice strictly on merits and not on any personal agenda.
Then there is this crap:
AP
COLUMBIA, S.C. – A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him “constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil.”
I cannot help but wonder how this priest feels about Bush/Cheney sending kids into an illegal war, with all its gory details. Oh, never mind. I just realized a$$hats like him don’t give a crap about kids once they are out of the chute.
November 13th, 2008 at 7:28 pmActually, the thing CB was talking about Prescott Bush is true. Check it out – the U.S. came extremely close to becoming a Fascist dictatorship in 1933.
Sometimes I worry that the wingnuts are trying to set Gen. Petreaus up to be their next Smedley Butler, the way they talk about him like he’s their War Messiah.
November 13th, 2008 at 7:41 pmElBruce, so long as Petreaus gets to the same level as Butler was when Butler wrote “War is a Racket”. Butler blew the whistle on all the crap that went on. While that does not exonerate Butler it took a lot of guts for him to expose it. Here is a link to the essay.

Secrets of the Tomb
Alexandra Robbins (graduate of Yale)
From New York Times bestselling author Alexandra Robbins
Based on interviews with more than 100 Bonesmen
An Exposé of President George W. Bush’s Secret Society
The Ivy League is full of societies and clubs, some public and some very private. But none is as secret as Yale’s infamous Skull and Bones. Founded in the nineteenth century and housed in an ominous crypt-like building referred to as the “Tomb,” Skull and Bones secretly taps for membership a small number of Yale students each year. All are sworn to secrecy about what goes on inside the Tomb, and about how powerful the organization really is. Rumors abound. It has been said that Bonesmen (as its members are known) are so protective of the organization’s secrets that they must leave the room if the words “Skull and Bones” are uttered. It has been said that the Tomb contains stolen relics such as Geronimo’s skull. It has been said that upon graduation from Yale each member is given a substantial sum of money with numerous strings attached. It has even been said that Skull and Bones is the dark heart of the secret world government. People point to a suspicious number of Bonesmen who have gone on to positions of power and influence, deserved or not, including George W. Bush, his father George H.W. Bush, United States Senators, CIA officials, cabinet members, and numerous heads of major international corporations.
Now, in SECRETS OF THE TOMB, acclaimed journalist Alexandra Robbins accomplishes what no one before her ever has. She has managed to get scores of Bonesmen to talk about what really happens inside the Tomb, and exactly what influence the organization really wields. She reveals for the first time who has been a member, and what that membership has meant. Robbins takes us inside the Tomb, and on to Skull and Bones’s private island. She reveals the organization’s secret initiation rites, and dissects their true impact on world affairs.
A spectacular feat of investigative reporting, SECRETS OF THE TOMB is more than the definitive book on the most secret society in the world. It is also a provocative exploration of our need for conspiracy and connection.
Formerly on the staff of The New Yorker, Alexandra Robbins has written for numerous magazines, including The Atlantic Monthly, where she has written on George W. Bush’s Skull and Bones experiences. She is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller QUARTERLIFE CRISIS and a 1998 graduate of Yale.
