Fox News chairman Roger Ailes describes his mission in life:
“I stand up for what I believe. I don’t back off. I’ve been that way for 40 years. That’s the secret to my success. I have thick skin. I don’t care what people say about me,” he said.
“I defend the United States, Israel and the Constitution.”
No word on whether Ailes listed those in order of priority.
Somebody's loyalties seem divided.
November 14th, 2008 at 11:23 amIf 'what you believe' is crap, standing up for what you believe is not a virtue.
November 14th, 2008 at 11:26 amI'll withhold comment in my effort to reduce profanities today.

November 14th, 2008 at 11:27 amOT but very interesting:
"Domestic terrorist" Bill Ayers gives his first interview after the campaign on Democracy Now. Listen and learn what someone who REALLY defends the Constitution has to say.
November 14th, 2008 at 11:28 amIs it just me does Ailes resemble the fat creepy rotting floating guy from Dune? Anyone care to ask this ghoulish propaganda monger exactly what the difference is between
November 14th, 2008 at 11:30 amdefending the united states and defending its constitution? Can one defend one while trying to undermine the other? thats the million dollar question I'd love an answer to..
If Roger Ailes is "defending" the Constitution --- it's snowing in Hades and satan's minions are ice-skating on the river Styx.
Just saying . . .
November 14th, 2008 at 11:33 amNo wonder he got along with the Bushies so well. Dual citizenship leaders permeate our federal government.
November 14th, 2008 at 11:35 amHe defends the United States ?
November 14th, 2008 at 11:35 amI'd say with some certainty, from the looks of him, he couldn't defend himself against an attack from the neighbors house-cat.
the fat creepy rotting floating guy from Dune
Yes, he does resemble Baron Harkonnen

...when I'm not pushing the right wing agenda, that is. Make that about 10% of each, and 70% of the other.
November 14th, 2008 at 11:55 amI have a hard time understanding the reichwingers' obsession, and absolute devotion to Israel, sometimes seemingly above the best interests of the United States.
How can it serve the United States' strategic interests in the region to piss off the entire Arab wold by protecting Israel at all cost, to the point of blocking UN resolutions condemning Israel's record on human rights? It boggles the mind.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ailes' list is actually in order of importance in his mind.

It's not just reichwingers - there's plenty of Israeli tuckhus-kissing on both sides of the aisle. And it's not about securing the vote of American Jews, who are by no means united in support of U.S. aid to Israel.

Exactly. I know it's not necessarily pandering, since American Jewish don't vote in block, and even if they did, they don't represent a significant proportion of the electorate.
I read somewhere that support for Israel stems, at least to some degree, from Messianic beliefs -you know, the second coming of Christ, Armageddon, etc. But I am not sure that explains it either.
November 14th, 2008 at 12:46 pmLying sack of shit!
November 14th, 2008 at 12:59 pmI wish other media outlets were so honest. Though I disagree with Ailes about his declared bias for the insignificant state of Israel, I commend him for admitting his bias.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:07 pm"Let me be clear. Israel’s security is sacrosanct." - Barack Obama
def. sacrosanct - Regarded as sacred
From the same speech to AIPAC: "The threats to Israel start close to home, but they don't end there. Syria continues its support for terror and meddling in Lebanon. And Syria has taken dangerous steps in pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, which is why Israeli action was justified to end that threat....
There is no greater threat to Israel — or to the peace and stability of the region — than Iran....
The Iranian regime supports violent extremists and challenges us across the region. It pursues a nuclear capability that could spark a dangerous arms race and raise the prospect of a transfer of nuclear know-how to terrorists."
So according to Barack Obama Israel had a right of preventative warfare to "end the threat" of possible future WMD and they reserve that right. They also have the right to do so against Iran, according to Obama.
THIS IS THE BUSH DOCTRINE
November 14th, 2008 at 1:07 pmIsrael is an important a democracy and an ally. But so is Great Britain. Why is it that Israel gets a mention in a list like this by Ailes and others? Why did Sarah Palin think it important to display an Israeli flag in her office and no other flag besides that of the U.S.?
I'm Jewish and I support the state of Israel as a Jewish democracy, but I am also an American and I don't understand this "most favored" ally Israel worship that so many, especially conservative, politicians do. My gut tells me it all has to do with the second coming and related ulterior motives.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:09 pmWhat does "Jewish democracy" mean? Is that like "white democracy" or "christian nation"?

November 14th, 2008 at 1:15 pmYes, Alejandro, Obama is a politician, who tells audiences what they want to hear.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:15 pmThat said, he'll likely be realistic when trying to forge a middle east pact between conflicted parties. Israel won't be getting the complete blank check they had with BushitCo.
He defends these things poorly.
Claiming to "defend" some nice things and that you don't care about what people say about you doesn't exonerate you from being a total asshat. There are people in padded cells who could say the same, but that doesn't mean we should listen to them.
Ailes' role in dividing the electorate and subverting the reputation of journalism has harmed the United States. His role in cheerleading extremist policies in Israel isn't helping its situation one bit. And his role in supporting the unconstitutional interpretations put forth by the Cheney administration has done significant harm to the current implementation of the Constitution of the United States.
This is in fact the opposite of what the word "defend" means.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:18 pmRoger Ailes never met a fourth estate he didn't want to trash and corrupt.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:22 pmWell, I'm sorry, but Oprah said he is The One.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:46 pmI don’t care what people say about me,” he said.
Well he won't care that I say that he has done more than enough to undermine American DEMOCRACY by attempting to help unethical Republicans create a permanent two-class system in the United States: the upper class and the poor, with no middle class. He has done that by subverting the Constitution with his propaganda.
November 14th, 2008 at 1:51 pmAiles then added, "I also defend kittens, by drowning them."

Holy crap dude, chill out. It's a known fact that the cesspool of the world is New Jersey. While I'll grant that Ailes is pathetic, I'm not sure that you can fairly call him a "traitor," as one would have to believe in something before betraying it in order to qualify. As for "belongs on a cross," I can't think of a better way to embolden right-wing nutjobs than to crucify him. I'd rather have him homeless and in dire need of a social welfare assistance program.
I think you need to switch sides with that attitude. That's Republican-style talk there.
November 14th, 2008 at 3:44 pmSo, what does he do if and when the interests of the United States diverge from the interests of Israel?
If he believes that that is impossible by definition and acts on that belief, then he is guilty of treason. Isn't he?
November 14th, 2008 at 3:54 pmHow can people criticize one person for making the defense of Israel by the United States a top priority while praising and vehemently supporting another person who does the very same thing.
Is this simply team/tribe psychology?
November 14th, 2008 at 4:02 pmI also love it when people talk about "the interests" of an entire nation, especially one as large and diverse as the US. I wonder what they are talking about. Are they talking about certain multinational corporations that are putatively based in the US that tend to use the US government to achieve their interests? I mean whose "interests" were served by the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq? U.S. interests?
