Yesterday on The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly did a segment on the consternation in California over the Prop. 8 same-sex marriage ban. O’Reilly said Barack Obama’s election has “emboldened secular progressives” on issues like gay marriage. The “cultural war issues,” he said, will only get worse:
O’REILLY: So you can see the debate over gay marriage is now a full fledge national battle. As talking points said last night the election of Barack Obama has emboldened secular progressives who feel it is their time. Gay marriage just the beginning. Other cultural war issues will also be in display very shortly. These include limiting gun possession, legalizing narcotics, unrestricted abortion and the revocation of the Patriot Act.
Watch it:
He is so vile!

November 14th, 2008 at 3:04 pmToo bad it won’t. Don’t see it getting by the courts, either.
November 14th, 2008 at 3:06 pmDon’t forget tooth decay, Billo. Secular progressives are also pro-tooth decay.

Gotta say, when he puts it like that, it makes it all the more attractive to me! I’m in favor of all of the above, except I am against late-term abortion without medical necessity. But overall, it sounds like an agenda I’d wholeheartedly support!
Thanks BillO for creating a viable and attractive list of issues that can be accomplished along with human rights to all, regardless of sexual orientation.
PEACE
November 14th, 2008 at 3:11 pmYeah Bill, I mean, look what has happened to America: Let the woman vote – now they run for the highest offices in the land. Let the Black man vote – now they HAVE the highest office in the land. Let multicultural people marry – now we have … uh lets see, uh – now we have happy people from multicultural families. Let the religious right rule the land – now we have poor standing in the world – ooops. I’m sure Bill is right – let ‘the gays’ marry and EVERYTHING will be broken!
I look forward to reduced ratings for Bill and his Fox friends.

BTW, how is the 2nd ammendment to the U.S. Constitution and the Patriot Act cultural issues? Aren’t they constitutional and legal issues?
Oh, man, they still think they can win on culture wars??
LOL … this has become too easy! With OReilly, Limbaugh and Hannity setting the course of the GOP, they will continue to lead the deep south and midwest while the rest of the country continues its progressive tilt and leans Dem.
It’s gonna be an AWESOME 8 years!!

November 14th, 2008 at 3:33 pmOther cultural war issues will also be in display very shortly..
Yeah, thanks to bigoted rightwing *ssholes like Bill O’Reilly who will make sure these NON issues stay on display.
November 14th, 2008 at 3:37 pmOutlawing gay marriage will embolden social conservatives and lead to a Christian Taliban state, capital punishment for adultery, loss of the vote for women, putting atheists in concentration camps… and legalizing narcotics.
November 14th, 2008 at 3:37 pmO’Reilly seems to be afraid of some hypothetical domino effect. Yes, other “culture war” issues will be fought, and eventually won. Just as they have in the past.
However, progress has been slow but steady. If Bill-o would look at the historical record, he will see how other “culture war issues” have fared.
In 1920, women received the right to vote in this country.
In 1954, racial segregation in schools was ruled unconstitutional.
In 1962, homosexual activity between consenting adults in private was decriminalized in Illinois.
In 1964, poll taxes, used to keep African-Americans from voting (particularly in southern states) became illegal.
In 1964, most forms of racial segregation were outlawed, with the Civil Rights Act of that year.
In 1967, states could no longer ban interracial marriage.
In 1970, women’s credit ratings were no longer dependent on their husbands.
In 1973, states could no longer ban abortion.
In 1993, military recruits no longer had to declare their sexual orientation as a condition of enlistment.
In 2000, same-sex civil unions were conducted in Vermont.
In 2003, states could no longer enact or enforce sodomy laws.
In 2004, same-sex marriages were legal in Massachusetts.
Looking at this sort of timeline, one can see that “culture war issues” have been with us for a long time, and one can surmise they will be with us for a long time yet. While I don’t think that gay marriage will open any floodgates (the fight for legalizing narcotics, for example, is a completely unrelated issue — and a rather silly one at that), there will be other issues in the future, and they will ultimately be won by the left, as they always are — eventually. No floodgates here — just the same old steady progress.
November 14th, 2008 at 3:37 pmO’Reilly: Gay marriage will lead to ‘legalizing narcotics, unrestricted abortion, revocation of the Patriot Act.’»
He says that like it’s a bad thing.
November 14th, 2008 at 3:38 pmGod, talk about being hyperbolic. I really do wish that someone would go on his show and talk about gay marriage. Then when he says that gays getting married is a threat to the institution of marriage they should ask him “Then why don’t you support passing laws that forbid divorce or criminalize adultery?” I’m pretty sure he could not come up with an intelligent answer to that question.

November 14th, 2008 at 3:48 pmWe need to legally codify the traditional definition of marriage. Henry VIII tried to redefine it to allow divorce, but it still says right in the vows, “until death do us part.” People who divorce and remarry are nothing more than adulterers, and society should not condone their deviant lifestyle. While we’re writing marriage restrictions into the law, we need to outlaw divorce.
Every second (or 3rd, 4th etc) marriage is invalid. Those people are all still married to their first spouse, and are committing adultery if they don’t go back to them.
The only correct definition of marriage is the Roman Catholic one. All others are wrong.

November 14th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
______
Well, if we’re going to go back to the traditional definition of marriage as practiced during Jesus’ day, let’s do it right.
Men should start paying a bride price for their brides, the way it’s supposed to be. We’re more than willing to buy our ladies, as long as they keep up their end of the ketubah. According to Deuteronomy, the going rate for an unused wife is 50 sheckels – just $12.83 by my calculations. That’s WAY cheaper than all that wedding stuff!
It’s a great deal – satisfaction guaranteed! If they die before producing us a male heir, we get a full refund. And if we do some comparison shopping and find ourselves a better bride, the $12.83 is our first wife’s money to keep.
I’m sure culture warriors like Sarah Palin and Bill O’Reilly would have no problem with returning to values like this, right?
November 14th, 2008 at 4:31 pmI can’t believe that there are millions of people who watch his show and listen to them on the radio. Then again, my friend tells me that 85% of the human race is stupid so there you go.
November 14th, 2008 at 4:32 pmA bride for $12.83?! Billo will be buying the brides by the 12-pack at that price. Hell, even Rush could afford that…just as long as the woman/women have some “manish” qualities.

“Emboldened”?
The current President’s favorite hot-button verb of the past eight years. He would often warn against actions that would “embolden our enemies”.
Consciously or unconsciously Bill decided to describe his fellow Americans with that same war-inspired phraseology.
