Schwarzenegger acknowledges global boiling: California now has ‘fire season all year round.’

Brad Johnson notes at the Wonk Room that in his interview yesterday with with ABC, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) talked of the impact of global warming on California’s wildfires. Climate change, he said, has created a constant threat of wildfires in California:

Through global warming, we have now fire season all year round. We used to have fire seasons only in the fall, but now the fire seasons start in February already, so this means that we have to really upgrade, have more resources, more fire engines, more manpower and all of this, which does cost extra money.

Watch it:

In addition to Schwarzenegger, former Bush EPA administrator Christine Todd Whitman and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) have also acknowledged “global boiling.”

It’s kind of hard to ignore it when your state gets burned to a crisp on a regular basis.

I suppose one of the faint silver linings of our dismal economy is that residential construction has no doubt slowed in California, meaning fewer homes encroaching into forested areas.

  6. Badger says:

Well, assuming those homes were all Insured, there could be a silver lining for the California Construction Industry.

I have always wondered this….do natural disasters Increase the GDP?

Actually, most of the wildfires around the LA area are in chapparal, not forest. I lived in Orange County for about a year back in 1981-82, and thought it was crazy so many homes were built in that ecosystem. And, naturally, it only got worse as development continued to sprawl.

“Chaparral is one of the most fire-prone plant communities in North America because of thunderstorms. As a consequence, since an increasing number of developments are pushing into the backcountry along what is known as the wildland-urban interface, management of the system has become increasingly important.”

    – - Those fires north of LA are 2 miles from my house. Saturday morning was like walking out into a nu-clur winter. There’s still ash falling all over everything, yet I still see fools driving around with their windows open and people walking without masks.

Damn Badmoodman! No wonder you’re in a bad mood!

    Good luck!!

    Ahnuld loves his fire engines.

    http://www.oes.ca.gov/

There is a massive fleet of neon green fire engines with the Governors Office of Emergency Services painted on the side.
Together with Cal-Fire, an umbrella agency which has arisen out of (and eclipsed) the California Department of Forestry, they comprise a huge entity which deals with the big business of wildland firefighting in California. Other government agencies are losing fire personnel at a rapid pace. There’s a lot of money to be made in California fighting fires.
The food is really good, too.

Didn’t the majority of voters in those counties favor McCain. That would explain a lot.

Hope you (and your house!) stay safe.

Fire season is a b!tch in Cali. Hope for the best for you badmoodguy

  13. Alejandro says:

You think that maybe the increase in fires is due to the Bush admin cutting the hell out of Federal funding that used to clear dead brush and things like that? The Dept. of Interior budget for doing these things was slashed a few years ago.

I grew up in SoCal. When I was a kid, major fires like this only happened every few years. It wasn’t that people were more careful with their cigarette butts, ’cause they weren’t. The weather conditions were just moist enough to keep the chapparall from burning very often. Now fires happen year round. It’s half way through November, here in Denver, and we’ve had one dusting of snow, and it was 68 degrees F today.
You can’t tell me the atmosphere isn’t heating up. I just don’t buy it.

Lately Arnie is all over the place acting like he knows what he’s talking about. He doing his best to suck up to the Obama team for a job. Arnie would know what Global Warming was if it bite him in the butt. All he knows is harassing woman and waliking around with no underwear on while exposing himself. If Obama puts him in a job the Obama Administration will see the first case of a Cabinet person aka Arnie charged with sex exposure and sexual harrassment. Maria will have to be the head of the family while she does her best to cover up the things her husband does.

I like him. He’s the only Republican I ever voted for.

I’ve lived in SoCal all but 3 years since 1963. Fires happened every year, some huge, but they didn’t burn down homes so often… because since that time the population of California has at least doubled, and homes are getting built in fire prone areas.
It’s clear that it’s getting hotter here as well.
I don’t think we’ve had a single day this November whose high was under 70.

Didn’t Ahnuld tell everyone to go out and buy an SUV four years ago? I guess when there’s numerous fires everywhere right in front of your face you can’t dismiss it as “just the liberal media scaring you.”.

A Republican smart enough to notice his entire state is on fire? They really ARE getting smarter!

  20. Bartolo says:

Are taxpayer dollars, in the form of higher home owner insurance nationwide, paying for Californians to build their homes amonst the dry brush?
