In June, Fox News anchor E.D. Hill infamously called a fist pound between Barack and Michelle Obama a “terrorist fist jab.” Hill’s remarks were met with widespread criticism and ridicule, and shortly afterward, Fox canceled her nightly news show. Hill also eventually apologized for her remarks. TVNewser now reports that Fox News has refused to renew Hill’s contract. Hill has been with Fox News for nearly 11 years. Watch her “fist jab” remarks here:
Is it because they have one standard for what they laughingly call 'straight news' and another one for 'commentary'?
Or is it because people actually complained about Hill?"
Wow, if Fox starts getting rid of everyone who made inaccurate statements (or outright lies) about Obama, going to be a pretty empty studio….
November 18th, 2008 at 9:46 amGeez… was there a rightwing idiot that was too distasteful for even Fox?
Or are they actually worried about “ratings” and “public perception” now that the tide has turned?
November 18th, 2008 at 9:52 amWell, fist of all, good for Fox News Channel. This is a move I can support 100%.
Second, I hope Fox will pay close attention to this little tactic their on-air “talent” likes to use, and that’s disguising their own biases and prejudices (as well as ignorance, bigotry, racism, etc.) by attributing some “thought” to a wide range of people when, in fact, the only people having those thoughts are the Fox people themselves.
For example, it wasn’t a “gesture everyone seems to interpret differently.” The people at Fox were the only ones thinking of a “terrorist fist bump”. In fact, it may very well have only been her who thought that, but by stating that the thought has more widespread popularity than actually exists, they can get away with their ignorant, bigoted, or racist remarks and claim they are just discussing “what’s on everyone’s mind.”
They also make the huge mistake of thinking that a majority of the country thinks as they do. Only a few million loyal viewers do. The rest of us have IQs in the three-digit range.
November 18th, 2008 at 9:52 amBoo frickin’ hoo…
November 18th, 2008 at 9:53 amFox will not tolerate any noise reader applogizing for what has been said about a liberal.

November 18th, 2008 at 9:59 amWhile I believe that canning E.D. Hill was the right thing to do, I have to wonder why she was thrown under the bus while the pundits like Bill O’Reilly are able to say any outrageous thing they choose and get away with it?
Is it because they have one standard for what they laughingly call “straight news” and another one for “commentary”?
Or is it because people actually complained about Hill?
November 18th, 2008 at 10:00 amOne poorly-aging blond bimbo down, 20 to go!
November 18th, 2008 at 10:04 amWow, what’s going on over there at Fox? Do they see the handwriting on the wall, and in an attempt to remain viable are changing their ways?

My money is on this one. Just look at how they are allowing Shepard Smith to question their reporting. He has to have their permission to do what he is doing, otherwise he would be gone by now.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:05 amI hear the military may be losing some of its interpreters in Iraq.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:07 amPerhaps E.D. could find employment in Baghdad interpreting terrorist body language.

Yeah… I’ve noticed that… and it seems like others are finally finding their cojones, or oves as the case may be, and starting to speak up… the the folks at the Dept of the Interior who were shocked at the Utah parklands deal BLM has been pushing.

Good point, missmolly. I don’t think it was because of complaints, as I’m sure millions of people have complained about O’Reilly and Hannity to no avail. And they let Brit Hume mix his commentary role with his “news” role all the time. My guess would be that she tried out a “talking point” that wasn’t approved by John Moody first.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:18 amDon’t get excited. This one will be replaced by a younger model from the peroxide factory. Rupert may tolerate Shep Smith and will let Chris Wallace act like a journalist every once in a while but don’t expect Fox to start acting like a news network until you see the three winger airheads on the morning show get canned and the Palin appearances fall below one per week.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:21 amThere are many employees in government agencies, especially the BLM and Fish and Wildlife, who have had to keep their heads down for the last 8 years. They were dismayed at the wanton giveaway to oil and gas, mining and cattle ranching interests.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:22 amI’m choosing to believe we will see a rapid return to more sustainable policies and practices, and a weeding out of idiot appointees the likes of Gail Norton.
Hatemongers like Hannity and O”Reilly keep the audience to which they appeal – the least common denominators among us; the ones who can’t think too deeply.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:22 amHill is just another “pretty face” a blonde with tight-fitting tops and short skirts – a dime a dozen, at half the price. Brains need not be a qualification.
Some of the older conservatives who pledge allegiance to Fox preferred Hume, but he will no longer be on TV daily, as he becomes an “an alyst” (TP doesn’t like it when I use the word in one spelling). That leave OReilly and Hannity at the top – a dubious distinction.
Maybe they’ll replace her with Elisabeth Hasselbeck…
November 18th, 2008 at 10:23 amAlan Colmes has been doing a very good job too, lately but he’s a special case as he’s there to justify the Fair and Balanced bs for the WHOLE of FOX.
E.D. Hill was surely low hanging fruit, easily picked-off ( see missmolly’s comment). Besides they have to make room for some new hires, like Judith Miller and the soon to be welfare queens of the Bush administration.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:25 amWow! I thought that she was reading from a teleprompter when she said that, I would have never thought that she could think for herself…
November 18th, 2008 at 10:27 amThey have to start thinning out their current batch of lying wingnuts in order to make room for all of the corrupt, out of work, Republican politicians they are hiring.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:29 amSaruhh has a degree in journalism… she’d be perfect for Fox.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:48 amComment on misshusseinmolly’s point. I think Fox news is throwing this woman under the bus (a) because she is expendable and (b) as a fig leaf of journalistic integrity to hide behind. Further, motivation could be a homage to the new administration to mend fences. Fox will demonize Barrack mercilessly in the coming years (we all know it) but they steal want a seat on the president’s plane.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:54 amE.D., have a nice ‘fist jab’ on the way out. See ya on the shopping channel selling bags of poop.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:01 amWhere do you go when you’re too incompetent for Fox? Welcome to Walmart?

In the past, she could have posted B.S. on liberal blogs for the RNC at 10 cents/post, but I don’t think they are hiring anymore.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:14 amI’m sure there’s some right-wing TV station in the Midwest who would hire her to cover stories about the births of two-headed cows. “One head’s blond, one brunette. Who’s the father? We just don’t know.”
November 18th, 2008 at 11:18 amcue Dana Perino furiously updating resume…
November 18th, 2008 at 11:54 amWhich was the braindead troll that used to come in here and refer to Barack Obama as fist tap? These brainwashed Foxbots have no shame.
November 18th, 2008 at 3:02 pmWhat the hell is a terrorist fist bump? Anyone who “recognized” that was hallucinating. Fox has a frightening audience.
November 18th, 2008 at 3:25 pmapparently, the only one who got “pounded” was hill…right out of her job.
November 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pmI’ll tell you why I have, roughly, a half-ounce of sympathy for Hill.
She was doing exactly what her masters, up to that point in time, would’ve wanted her to do, and said exactly what they would’ve wanted her to say. She’s like a hotter female version of Dwight Schrute in The Office. Both of them trying to please their masters best they can, how were they supposed to know when the rules change if there’s no memo going around saying what was acceptable 27 seconds ago is now verboten? Sure, she’s a reprehensible shrew, but that’s why she was hired, and now that’s why she was fired. It’s like getting canned for doing exactly what your job description entails. It’s like a McDonald’s fry cook getting fired for making an extra bag of fries: Too soon! You overstepped your authoritah! Hang up your apron! It’s like a prostitute getting fired for being “too good” at her job: Your john finished too fast! It’s like he didn’t really get his money worth!
Of course, Dwight Schrute isn’t real, whereas Hill only seems like a product of a fevered imagination.
November 18th, 2008 at 5:47 pmThey fired her because she was NOT HARSH enough of Obama. They want ONLY raw meat. SHe was too much of a pussy.
