Ted Stevens loses Alaska Senate election.

The AP reports:

Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has lost his bid for a seventh term.

The longest-serving Republican in the history of the Senate trailed Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by 3,724 votes after Tuesday’s count.

That’s an insurmountable lead with only about 2,500 overseas ballots left to be counted.

In their GOP conference meeting today, Senate Republicans punted on whether to formally kick Stevens out of their caucus.

Great news, though a small part of me wanted to see if the GOP, when push came to shove, would have the balls to kick him out. As we know, for all their tough talk they're chickenshit ball-less weenies

  5. MCMetal Says:

Was there any wailing and gnashing of teeth heard emanating from the Alaska governor's office ?

  6. lokidog Says:

    Stevens lost?

    Sarah Palin lost - again.

No way she wouldn't have chosen herself to replace the old convicted felon had he won.

Damn. Palin is 0-2 for November. What a loser.

Bible Spice couldn't have chosen herself ; had Stevens won and been booted from the Senate , there would have been a special election held to determine who would represent Alaska in Stevens' place.........

    Yep, good one Joe.

Georgia is just going to get uglier and uglier now that Ted has lost.

  13. gummitch Says:

Ted Stevens has yet to concede. I'm guessing this is a large enough lead that a recount will not be triggered, but I'm also guessing the "conservative" pundits will be screaming bloody murder about Democrats cheating -- in Alaska and in Minnesota.

  14. gummitch Says:

    Happy Birthday, Ted!

    SORRY SARAH!

Well, Uncle Ted, it's been real and it's been fun. Don't bend down to pick up the soap in the pokey.

  19. EnnuiDivine Says:

    Happy Birthday, Ted!

It's still very unlikely that he'll face jail time. He's an 85yr old non-violent offender with a history of cancer and he's still held in remarkably high regard in Alaska.

He WILL retire back to his house, soon to be stripped off all renovations

Alaskans hold someone convicted on 7 felony counts in high regard ?

Surprised the Gotti family hasn't moved there yet...........

  21. Curlew Says:

Bye Uncle Ted. Leavenworth will have a memorial wing waiting for you. Do you want KY jelly for a going to prison present?

  22. konchster Says:

Ted"s saggy old white cheeks are safe Way to much young fresh chicken in the house for an 85 yr. old *ss to be of interest

  23. Lora Says:

Combined with the indictments of Dickhead and Gonzo, this is a day for really great news. Now if only my sick cat continues to recover from a double cancer operation, I will be smiling as high as Mt. Everest.

  24. paleolib Says:

The high regard of Alaskans doesn't mean much as far as Teddy's sentence is concerned. That decision belongs to a federal judge in D.C. Nice to see that God didn't open a door for Governor Snowbilly after slamming the last one. She is stuck in America's fridge for the next two years now.

  25. LiberalVoter Says:

Well, the trolls are really losing it, just like Ted. HAHAHAHA.

  26. wizard2000 Says:

If not for all the convicted felons (and unindicted co-conspirators) in the Republican Party, there wouldn't be a Republican Party.

  27. SWBob Says:

So Sarah, what insight do you do you have for the world on this development?

  28. republicans hate facts Says:

This is why the caucus is not trashing Lieberman! They sincerely believe 60 seats are possible. I concur. I would love to see Lieberman stripped of his chairmanship, but 60 seats makes all sorts of things possible that wouldn't otherwise be.

So we get rid of a convicted felon and dash power-mad Palin's immediate hopes of a Senate publicity podium. Yay!!!

  33. SKdeA Says:

You know, this is kind of a good news day. Between this and the indictment of Cheney and Ashcroft (which sounds like a Victorian mortuary firm), it's a very nice day.
    Nice.
    Justice, can you smell it?

  34. sectionop92 Says:

Actually, we shouldn't countout Ted Stevens yet. Republican math can always make 2,500 outstanding ballots with a 3,700+ lead into a election snafu. The GOP is a cornered hamster...and hamsters bite!

  35. EugeneDebs Says:

    LushInterior Says:

Why do you bother? You have already established you are an ignorant brainwashed piece of garbage. Showing it AGAIN is redundant

  36. sectionop92 Says:

When you have someone named "LushInterior" who is a GOP sympathizer, doesn't the Lush say it all?!

  37. Perry logan Says:

    You are so right.

In the parallel universe where Karl Rove decided to flip this Presidential election, the pundits are busily explaining the genius of the McCain-Palin campaign, and where all those Republican voters came from...at the very last minute.

  38. jpopphan Says:

Hurrah! I am glad that another Democrat will be taking a seat in the new Senate. I am also glad that Stevens will no longer be in a position of authority.

Kudos to the people of Alaska for sending us a politician that we can actually use - instead of another Caribou Barbie.
