Boehner: ‘I think the Congress is still a center-right Congress.’

boehnerweb2.jpgSince the GOP’s dismal electoral performance on Nov. 4, many conservatives have been engaged in a massive game of cover-up, arguing that despite the results, America is still a “center-right” country. (But it’s not). During a recent interview with Time magazine, House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) was the latest to take up the baton, saying there is “no question” that both the nation and Congress are “center-right”:

BOEHNER: America is a center right country.

TIME: Still?

BOEHNER: Yes, no question. When you look at all the exit polling, Americans don’t want bigger government, they don’t want higher taxes. And frankly, I think the Congress is still a center-right Congress.

It’s odd that Boehner would call the entire Congress “center-right” given the fact that both the House and Senate combined gained 28 more progressives than it had in 2006. In fact, one of first items on the Senate’s agenda in the new Congress next year will be a top progressive priority: universal health care.

It may look that way from where you’re seated, Boehner…

  2. lefttown says:

Well, they’re sure acting like a center-right Congress with their refusal to help out working men and women in the auto industry.

  3. stateofthedivision says:

If you count the Blue Dogs, I mean Azure Chupacabras, he may be correct.

Recall Rahm Emanuel hand picked centrist Democratic candidates to run in many districts.

Votes on universal health care bills will reveal who is truly progressive. I’ll wait for that measure to judge.

  4. twolf1 says:

No Mr. Boner, what Americans don’t want is republicans.

In other words, our job is not finished – there’s still too many dead wood/obstructionists in Congress doing the bidding of their Corporate Masters.

  7. misshusseinmolly says:

Boehner can call it whatever he wants to if it will make him feel better, but the fact remains that both houses of Congress tilted left as a result of the 2006 mid-term elections, and then tilted even further left as a result of the elections this month.

And while Boehner tries to comfort himself with labels and semantics, the House and the Senate will get to work undoing the damage of his party. And actions matter a great deal more to the American public than labels from the irrelevant do.

How is it that people like Weepy are still alive? Percieving reality is a biological necessity, yet he is Most obviously Unable to do so. I’m saddened to watch the party of Abraham Lincoln slowly burning and sinking. However, given the ‘Captain’ and crew currently running it, se la vie.

I wonder if his car has a ‘right’ turn signial, and a ‘right center’ one? Good luck getting anything you want from congress, bone head.

  13. ralph the wonder llama says:

So if a split in the House of Representatives of 255 Democrats and 175 Republicans represents a “center-right” Congress, then one might reasonably conclude that the 109th, which had 227 Republicans and 205 Democrats, was a “Far-right” Congress.

    Make sense?

  14. impeachcheneythenbush says:

I’m glad Boehner was reelected as Minority Leader in the House. He will help lead his party into oblivion.

  15. Zooey says:

I don’t care what Boney thinks.

  16. nofltwlt says:

John “Bawlin John” “far right” Boehner will say anything so long as it is in compliance with GOP talking points.

  17. pithaughn says:

Fellers like this, I don’t think will be in leadership roles much longer. Either the repub base will find new leaders that are capable of actually accepting reality. Or the repub party will quickly fade away. This non acceptance of reality is really strange, sort of like Marie Antoinette, buying extravagant wardrobes till the end.

  18. Buckie Boy says:

    Let’s play “What a Boner”….

John “Da Boner” pulls another one…MOST of the country isn’t showing the Republican Mafia “teh love”, as in lowest unfavorable view ever, this doesn’t translate into “right of center”.

These guys are groping at straws.

  19. RWeSafer says:

He better not run all that obstructionist crapola again…

Then he’ll see how center-right things get. ;)

  20. lurker says:

Boehner said “I think the Congress is still a center-right Congress.”

I think that if I smear poop from your nose to your right
cheek that would be a center-right poop smear.

  21. Roket says:

Boner is not speaking to the American people; he is speaking to his base. The general public is not fooled by these idiotic remarks, but the Republican base eats this shit right up.

  22. Angry McAngus says:

Boehner: “I also think the earth is flat, the sun rises in the west, the man in the moon is winking at me, and the tooth fairy rides a unicorn.”

  23. TXProgressive says:

Keep thinking that way Mr. Boehner – and in light of that, I thank you for the promise of many more years of Democratic majorities.

  24. FaireMaiden says:

If this schmuck ‘thinks’ America is center-right, then all I can say is: he’s not thinking, he’s politicking.

After 8 years of inverted language, I am sick unto death of these bastards. Talk about trying to maintain some kind of relevance. Dude, your party is BUSTED all to shit. FACE IT, IT’S FINALLY BROKEN under the weight of its LIES. Pull your head out of your ass and quit insisiting that nothing is wrong, everything is the same, that privitization without regulation is a ‘holy’ thing, that Obama really wasn’t a Marxist but a center-right all along, and that you actually have some reason to exist.

  25. Nevar says:

    Enjoy your virtual reality, John.

It seems that Boner nips too much from the bottle. He sounds a little balmy at times. I guess replacing drunky McPuke shoes DeLay he would have to be a drunk.

Memo to vast right wing conspiracy, dated 11/20/2008:

The following phrase is authorized for use in any circumstance -

    I think that (X) is still a center-right (X).

Use for all talking points, including but not limited to your grocery list and apologizing for sex scandals. You may substitute anything for (X) in the authorized phrase. Ignore any attempts by media to get you to make sense of what you just said, as per standard operating procedure. Repeat the authorized phrase whenever questioned. About anything.

  29. VolcRx says:

The only thing “center-right” is the misplaced “eh” in Boehner’s name. Eh; Boner?

  30. lzcrmc says:

Hate to quibble but the House and Senate gained 28 more Democrats. Unfortunately, that is not nearly the same thing as saying they gained 28 more progressives.

  31. EugeneDebs says:

Bohner would say the Pacific Ocean was a mudpuddle if it pushed his rightwing agenda. What a PUTZ

  32. Tired of being lied to says:

Whenever Bohner speaks, I can only think of one thing:

With his head so far up his arse, how does he keep his hair so neatly combed? That perfect part is just amazing…

  34. dasm says:

Said many times before, but– Boehner the boner… because he is a…
-hardened individual, lacking in thought or intelligence
-is soft on anything to help the middle class or the poor
-spews lies & Repub talking points
-only cares about his own feelings
-will lie about absolutely anything to obtain his own ends
-thinks he is the most important thing on earth
…yes, “boner” is a good nickname for this living-in-the-past, ignorant individual.

I think the secret lies in what he uses for mousse.

  36. nanlichi says:

Why do the Repugs have their head in the sand? Because the sand trickles into their ears, they can’t hear anything and it’s peaceful.

Just ignore that SUV of public opinion bearing down on you at 75 MPH Boehner. Please.

  37. nanlichi says:

ralph, is that the same mousse as used in “Something About Mary”? No doubt.

  38. 49erDem says:

Just agree with the boner. If he hears the truth, he may break down sobbing again and who needs that. It’s just sad.

That’s alright, boner, we’re still conservatives. Go lie down now.

No, we don’t want bigger government like repubs seem to want.
No, we don’t want to pay higher taxes.

But guess what, we don’t mind doing our share and that MISTER is something YOU and the rest of your thuggish cohorts don’t want to do.

  42. Laszlo Panaflex says:

He’s completely correct because the Dems are fraidy cats who do whatever the Republicans tell them. And the Lieberman business shows nothing has changed.

You can call the new members “progressives” all you like, but until they prove it, I’m not expecting much. They seem to believe all this center-right BS and they think of us as the loony left.

  43. jb says:

B0oner must be on viagra to keep pushing that kind of wood.

  44. Dirty Hippie says:

    Enjoy your Kool-Aid, Boner.

  45. Pete Tagliani says:

I think you could drop one of these guys in to a big hippie jam session and they would rationalize that it was “a center-right hippie jam session”.

  46. Game of Life says:

As long as the repugs shove their agenda down the msm throats their party will never change. It’s their core fiber that’s wrong.

repugs are the only ones believing their bs.

  47. questioneverything says:

Funny thing about averages. Paul Krugman once put it best. If 5 regular guys are in a bar (making average salaries) and Bill Gates walks in, the average salary of the five rises disproportionately. That is a bad statistic. And the Boner knows nothing about statistics. Neither does he read anything but menus. Wouldn’t put too much stock in anything he says.

  48. RUCerious says:

    Got crying towel?

  49. Tim Vaculik says:

So, Nancy Pelosi and company are wrong about the need to govern from the political center?

Mr. Boehner was correct when he stated that we are still a “center-right” nation. The post-election research clearly shows that there was no fundamental shift in how people perceive their core beliefs. In fact, the movement in the various categories of the questions asked was only ONE percentage point.

So what explains Obama’s victory? It was a “perfect storm” consisting in no small part of the following factors:

    1. The financial meltdown, which came just in the nick of time
    2. The mainstream media who totally abdicated their duty (see http://www.howobamagotelected.com for a great example.
    3. A weak Republican candidate who is not a conservative.
    4. Massive infusions of illegal campaign contributions to Obama’s campaign ($200 Mil buys a lot of air time!)

Finally, if you really want to know the inspiration for Obama’s highly successful tactics, just read Saul Alinsky’s book.

  50. pax says:

Too much tanning bed for boner.

  51. MapleStreet says:

    Center Right OF WHAT???

Admittedly, it is to the right of the 99th percentile. It is to the Center Right of the National Anarchist Society.

  52. Tim Vaculik says:

    MapleStreet,

Well that’s the problem isn’t it – how do you measure it?

I’m not suggesting that Nancy Pelosi and her ilk have the same opinion of where the political center lies in this country as I do. In fact, what most Democrats consider to be “mainstream” American thought is pretty far left in my opinion!

  53. Musk says:

I don’t call you want I want to call you, BOEHNER, because I know how emotional you get, and I hate it when you cry.

  54. clarkorwell says:

Denial, denial, denial!!! Mr. Boner needs to just let this all go. I know it’s sad that his party is in the minority but they deserve it. Look at us! Oh well, this should be fun to watch them come to terms, with us of course.

  55. motorfingaz says:

And frankly, I think the Congress is still a center-right Congress.

This is why these bastards fail at governing. Everything to them is ideology. Republicans stifle progress and are a threat to the advancement of America.

  56. Robt says:

Center right and way further to the left of center. maybe.?

Has Boehner made that appointment for rehab yet?

  57. mauro7inf says:

I could be satisfied with a center-right country and Congress, especially since apparently, center-right includes universal healthcare, sensible foreign policy, non-disastrous economic policy, values independent of religion, and so on. We ARE a center-right nation. The Democrats are a center-right party, for the most part. I would love to live in a country where the leadership governs in a center-right way — perhaps less center-right than Clinton, but certainly MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more center-right than Bush. (That didn’t make any sense, mathematically. But you know what I mean. To the left of Clinton, and to the center from Bush, overtaking Clinton and ending up to his left. Anyway.)

Center-right nation? Bring on the healthcare.

  58. konchster says:

Was Boehner weeping like a baby when he said this. If ever he had a reason to cry,and he seems to find many, this would look like the best reason of all

  59. bentley1 says:

Why or why did this fool win election again?
I guess there’s no help for Cincinnati voters.
Oh, and Boener, I still think you’re a nut.
    tony and lido

  60. bentley1 says:

  61. Gaia says:

Just goes to show that these guys NEVER let facts get in the way. They are sitting out in the rain fighting with each other over a broken umbrella, meanwhile telling us to “come on out here, the weather is fine”.
    Astonishing!

  62. NOLIESPLEASE says:

Didn’t anyone tell Bonner they lost the election by over 6million votes?????? How is that centre right???? Can anyone answer that question because it’s really sad to see such idiots still on the Hill. Just Sad!!
