In a decision made public yesterday, a judge has ordered CNN “to rehire 110 workers who were fired because they were union members. CNN also was ordered to recognize the workers’ unions, National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians-CWA (NABET-CWA) locals 31 and 11.” From the AFL-CIO blog:
Judge Arthur Amchan found that CNN violated the rights of more than 250 employees at the network’s bureaus in Washington, D.C., and New York City when it ended its subcontract with Team Video Services (TVS) [in 2003-2004], whose employees were represented by NABET-CWA. He also ruled that CNN discriminated against TVS employees who wanted to continue working at CNN’s bureaus to avoid having to recognize and bargain with the union.
Ed McEwan, president of Local 11, responded, “Everyone in America should know that the network management we rely on to bring us the news are not above the illegal practices that they headline on a regular basis.”
Can this be a learning moment that the people who own the news media in this country are a bunch of hard right wingers? It’s all about greed.

November 25th, 2008 at 10:52 amJudge A. Amchan deserves a ‘Thank You’ card sent to him.
CNN discimination against union workers finally decided by a judge.
CNN should be ashamed of themselves that the case has to be decided in court.
I’m happy for workers who won this fight.

November 25th, 2008 at 10:53 amThe right-wingers can officially stop calling it Communist News Network now – or a liberal media outlet. These are not the actions of a liberal pro-union organization, but rather a conservative, anti-union one.
November 25th, 2008 at 10:54 am“The media” has the single most powerful lobby to Congress. 3 guesses as to why we never hear about it (your first 2 don’t count).
November 25th, 2008 at 10:56 amThey can, but they won’t.
November 25th, 2008 at 10:58 amsomewhat OT; The Administration rushed to bail out Wall Street quickly, no questions asked for all practical purposes. When the Big 3 auto makers came, they were raked over the coals.
Want to know why the difference? Banks are not unionized, but the Big 3 are. I know for a fact that some Rethugs would love NOTHING more than to break the back of the UAW once and for all, perhaps even dealing a death blow to ALL unions in the country.

And then, when they do, we just throw this story back at them :)
Just look at what we’ve been able to accomplish in the last 4 years with a little edu-ma-cation. One of my favorites is all the Republicans who now call themselves “Independents” because they are too embarrassed to be Republicans anymore. LOL
November 25th, 2008 at 11:05 amThe major media companies provide very poor coverage of labor relations issues. Look at how the writer’s strike was covered. It was presented as an “entertainment” story rather than a hard news story. The major media companies have a vested interest in minimizing unions. They exploit their news departments to further that goal.
November 25th, 2008 at 11:09 amSince we’re on the topic of labor, check out this sick, sick denial of a workers comp. payout to the grandmother of a little boy whose mother was murdered.
[..]
Now, Talley’s mother is fighting to get her daughter’s workers compensation death benefits, which, according to the family’s lawyer, have been denied because the killer’s targeting her as a black person established a “personal connection” that the company says releases them from having to pay.
Get bent, Dollar General.

It’s amazing how many people think that labor unions brought down the big 3 auto makers rather than crappy leadership producing crappy cars.
It’s not a logical argument to justify CEOs making multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses because we need their talent to run the company, and then turn around and blame anyone else when those companies fail. Either the CEOs have the power, or they don’t.
If they do, then they take the associated accountability.
If they don’t, then they take major pay cuts.
Can’t have it both ways anymore…

Truly appalling!
November 25th, 2008 at 11:28 amIt’s funny how the media always includes pension and welfare benefits in the union workers salaries but they never include it for all the stock brokers or insurance hacks at AEI do they? It’s a class war against blue collar workers. They want them as poor as possible. The fact is though they are the people who actually build the product that brings in the money. It is product that keeps the economy stable not all the service jobs or administrative jobs.
November 25th, 2008 at 11:34 amDoes this mean right-wing crackpots will stop calling it Communist News Network?

I stand corrected. Sorry for the mix-up.
November 25th, 2008 at 12:19 pmCNN used to be dependable when Ted Turner had creative control over it, but then Case at AOL and Levin at Time Warner pulled a scam on Turner earlier this decade, freezing out Ted Turner.
For instance, besides factual, bare-naked news being reported on CNN under Ted Turner, he also aired Style With Elsa Klensch, a great fashion show presenter, uncut, uncensored…which drove all the religious conservative terrorists in America batty.
I specifically watched Style With Else Klensch on CNN because I knew that as long as her show aired uncut and uncensored that I could trust CNN.
Then, I noticed that someone at CNN began censoring her fashion show coverage, digitally blurring out the “naughty” parts. Uh-oh. Shortly after this initial right-wing censorship began her show was completely canceled…which happened right around the time that CNN started allowing a whole lot of Republican talking points to be repeated over and over and over again.
Later, I read that Case at AOL had fraudulently claimed earlier this decade that AOL was bigger (revenue-wise) than it really was in an attempt to buy-out the much larger Time Warner, headed at that time by Levin, who must have been in on this fraud.
AOL/Time Warner bought Ted Turner’s empire and proceeded to convert it into a Republican-friendly, religious terrorist-hugging outlet for extreme, hardcore right-wing viewpoints and values…after Ted Turner made the big, big mistake of believing the crap Case and Levin fed him, handing over creative control of his “babies” to these two conservative crooks…who then proceeded to pervert everything that Ted Turner had fought so hard to establish in the way of integrity and trustworthiness.
CNN, thus, became an arm of the Republican Party’s propaganda machine, just like Faux News and AM talk radio.
One example.
In December 2001, I saw a lower-screen news blurb scroll across CNN (had sound off) that stated “The FBI is currently conducting 15,000+ investigations into suspicious mailings.”
This little update about what the FBI was doing to response to the initial lethal anthrax mailings a few months earlier and all the copycat non-lethal mailings that followed appeared for about 15 to 20 minutes…then disappeared.
There has been no other report since then informing us of the true extent of the terrorist mailings in America over the past seven years.
But my question is simple: who in the Bush administration ordered CNN to yank this news blurb and who at CNN has sought since then to quell any coverage of the FBI’s investigations into these domestic terrorist mailings?
Oh, I know. Because the initial, lethal anthrax mailing was done by a conservative (based on who received the lethal letters) and because most of the copycat non-lethal terrorist mailings that have followed must have similarly been sent by wacko right-wingers, “liberal news media” like CNN have been covering up this information, trying to hide from American citizens the true extent of the right-wing terrorist threat our nation (and children) really face.
Too bad Ted Turner seems to have lost interest in his “babies.” Otherwise, he would be seeking to regain control over what he once owned, bringing his honesty, his integrity back into play at CNN…and kicking all the Republican/conservative/religious bums out.
