John McCain & Barack Obama urge Afghanistan surge

John McCain joined Barack Obama in calling for a surge in Afghanistan Tuesday as the presidential contenders sparred over who was right about Iraq.
“The central front in the war on terror is not Iraq, and it never was,” said Obama, who has claimed combat brigades needed to battle the Taliban have been diverted to Iraq and vowed to take the fight to “Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

Bush and Cheney appointed Karzai and now with an election coming up Karzai knows he has no leader. Most likely there will another President in Afghanstan. Karzai who worked for Unicol when he met Daddy Bush and Cheney was put in as President to sign the piple line the US wanted. Bush was friends with the Taliban and even had them come to the US as his guest and showed them around. Puppet Karzai is now on his own and he most likely will come back to the US after he loses the election.

Karzai’s seen the writing on the wall. His call for a withdrawl timeline is an attempt to get out in front of the “change” meme, instead of looking like he’s just a follower of circumstance.

If the US had put the same amount of money spent on the occupation of Iraq into creating non-oil-based energy and energy-using machinery, I wonder if we would be as inclined to be seeking to democratize the Middle East. I think not.

He was all hawkish on Afghanistan, which means that Republicans are going to pick on him forever for it if he delivers nothing less than the complete slaughter of every single current and former Taliban and Al-Qaeda member there. You know how they feel about “talking.”

I’m not sure that you can say Obama is “hawkish” on Afghanistan. He merely recognizes the fact that if we are going to be there, we need enough troops to be effective. If the people of Afghanistan want us gone, I can’t see Obama saying “too bad, we’re staying”.

Our plan– Send 15,000 more Marines to clobber the Taliban until some of them are weak enough to want to negotiate and switch sides.

Karzai’s plan– Since foreigners are long past the window of opportunity for winning hearts and minds, more troops just means more war. Better to negotiate now.

What’s really pathetic about this situation is that this war would have ended successfully many years ago if the Bush administration hadn’t decided to attack Iraq instead. I really feel for the people of Afghanistan. They’ve suffered from being at war for over 30 years. Their country is in rubble. All for a Central Asia Gas (CentGas) pipeline from Turkmenistan through western Afghanistan to Pakistan, and access to the Persian Gulf. Karzai was the choice of the U.S. for President, seeing as he had been a top advisor to UNICOL, which were negotiating with the Taliban for that pipeline prior to 911.

Afghanistan has been the ‘7th circle of Hell’ to foreigners. A myriad of reasons exist to explain this, but the fact remains.

I find it ironic that this was where we funded the Taliban’s beginnings, it was Russia’s downfall, we paid Osama Bin Laden to spawn the Taliban and yet, 20+ years later, we’re in Afghanistan looking for Bin Laden.

I agree with Karzai. Let’s GTF out of Afghan territory. The only way ‘we’ can defeat Islamic extremists is by winning the ‘war of ideas’, not brute strength and munitions. It has never worked in Afghanistan and never will work today.

Let them smoke their Opium into oblivion. Let them pray 100 times a day if it makes them feel more holy.

Our job as Americans is to set an example. This isn’t working…

This is a VERY important revelation that needs to be filed away in everyone’s mental Rolodex.

Because, while even many Republicans concede we need to get out of Iraq, continuing to waste lives/money into Afghanistan with no end in sight is still below most people’s radar. And should the Obama Administration eventually start to pull troops out of Afghanistan, it needs to be recalled that *Afghanistan* themselves were calling for an end to the occupation in 2008.
