Norquist: ‘The Economy’s In The Present State’ Because Democrats Took Control Of Congress In 2006

On CNBC this morning, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist claimed that the current financial crisis facing America is rooted in the fact that Democrats took control of the House and Senate in 2006. “The economy’s in the present state because when the Democrats took the House and Senate in 2006, you knew that those tax increases were going to come in 2010,” said Norquist.

According to Norquist, the stock market collapsed because “we’re in the middle of responding” to tax increases that haven’t actually happened yet:

NORQUIST: Well, the economy’s in the present state because when the Democrats took the House and Senate in 2006, you knew that those tax increases were going to come in 2010. The stock market began to collapse as soon as you recognized that those old tax rates were coming back. So, we’re in the middle of responding to those tax increases.

David Sirota, who was on the CNBC show as well, notes that Norquist’s absurd argument was laughed at and immediately rejected by the host and the other guests on the show. The Financial Times’ Chrystia Freeland pointed out that “the stock market is collapsing because the U.S. and global financial system is in crisis.” Watch it:

Though economists might disagree over what the exact causes of the financial crisis are, Norquist’s assertion is laughable. Indeed, if he wants to find a real culprit, he should look at the Bush administration’s utter failure to supervise our mortgage, lending and financial markets properly while also ignoring the ailing U.S. housing market.

Transcript:

HOST: Question is really, should Obama obandon — abandon, rather, his original tax plan. For that, we want to go to David Sirota, syndicated columnist and author of The Uprising. Also, Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, and Chrystia Freeland. Grover, I’ll begin with you. Great to see all of you, by the way. Grover, the president-elect’s tax plan calls for raising taxes on those making more than $250 K. Is a tax hike appropriate given the state of the economy right now?

NORQUIST: Well, the economy’s in the present state because when the Democrats took the House and Senate in 2006, you knew that those tax increases were going to come in 2010. The stock market began to collapse as soon as you recognized that those old tax rates were coming back. So, we’re in the middle of responding to those tax increases.

HOST: Uhh, I don’t know Grover. Christia, would you agree with the — I mean, to a certain extent the stock market’s collapsing because of the subprime crisis.

FREELAND: No, I think it’s a little rich to…yeah, no, not to a certain extent. The stock market is collapsing because the U.S. and global financial system is in crisis. It’s in a greater crisis than it has been since 1929. And that’s according to John Thain, CEO of Merrill Lynch, a Republican all his life. So, this about much more than what’s going to happen on the tax rates that the wealthiest Americans pay.

You have to love Grover as K Street King with the Abramoff scam. Grover lost his KKK card when he married a Pakistan lady because no American woman would take him even with his money. Now the Pakistan lady now is a US citizen so much for Homeland Security checking on these marriages. Some American just might believe Grover but for those who have a brain, we remember the blank check 109th Congress. Yes from 2000-2006 is just give out all the money the White House wanted and more.

People with knowledge make predictions based on theory. Grover’s ranting that “the 2008 credit implosion is due to anticipated 2010 tax increases” is patently laughable.

Here’s my theory. Grover is a hypercompetitive win-lose political operative who will spin anything against his opponent. I’ll be happy to test that vs. his economic predictions.

Why do you keep reporting the babblings of these idiots? For the past eight years their statements may have carried some weight or reflected some new movement of the neocon nitwits but since the election their quotes are little more than verbal diarrhea and only serve to remind the country of where we have been not where we are going.

Damn them Democrats with all their deregulation and putting lobbyists in charge of regulatory agencies – owai…

Everybody knows the 110th Congress has been utterly ineffective. Whether that’s because they’re such wimps or because the R’s are such great obstructionists is another question. But given that they’re so ineffective, you can’t really blame them for anything.

Yesterday, I got so mad at Miles O’Brien (subbing for Wolf Blitzer) that I wanted to throw something at the tv. Donna Brazile was talking about Obama using people from the Clinton administration:

BRAZILE: Remember, they created record employment, a record number of people who were in homes. They reduced the level of poverty in our country. And, of course, they got us to a balanced budget and even left a surplus. So, I think, by bringing these seasoned people into Washington, that’s a good thing.

O’BRIEN: And, of course, they had the benefit of good economic times. And this administration is starting in a big hole.
    ————————————————–

When Bill Clinton took over from GHW Bush, there was a bad recession, unemployment was about 7.5%, we had record $250 billion annual deficits, and interest on the debt was about $125 billion a year. Clinton and a Democratic congress cut the deficit in half the first budget with not a single Republican vote!

Clinton took us to a $250 billion annual surplus and 3.9% unemployment. We are currently at 6.5% unemployment and could be a Trillion dollar FY2009 deficit.

The morning after a 2004 Democratic Primary debate, Miles O’Brien said “The questions from last night are: Who won?, Who lost?, and Who CARES?.

He’s so addicted to his talking points. The tax increase he alludes to is simply the natural, and already legislated expiration of the current tax schedule. Essentially, the tax rate would revert to Clinton-era levels. They cry about it now, but republicans at the time also wanted the tax to expire, and it was one of the “bi-partisan” pieces of legislation they used, both as a symbol of their ability to reach bi-partisan consensus, and as a campaign-fundraising tool.

Unless one could predict that Bush would be so unpopular at the end of his term that by then the Democrats would be in control of both houses, why would one naturally assume that in 2010, the democrats would be in a position to allow the tax to expire?

Of course, they were betting they’d be in control by now, with a permanent majority. But the fall-back strategy seems to have been to leave this sunsetting tax like an unexploded political mine for the democrats, if they achieved control.

And of course, Grover’s shooting his trusty rhetorical sling-shot, to bean any democrats who might try defuse it.

Short-sighted, full-blown greed that people like you facilitated and encouraged and benefited from.

Why do they keep giving this un-American shitstain a forum to spew his smegma drenched blather?

  28. barfly says:

It is not done for the fun of it!

I can guarantee the economy’s present state is the result of a monopoly controlling the supply of money. Obama, just like pasts presidents before him (except for JFK, and we all know what happened to him), will not end this monopoly.

  30. Mr. Evil says:

Economics made simple: when you send jobs overseas by the millions and when you do nothing tangible to stimulate the economy people tend to lose their buying power. When Wall Street collapses under the weight of worthless paper generated from all the convoluted financial contrivances designed to enrich the few at the expense of the many you get the economy we have today.

This is why you always hear republicans crying about “big government” all the time. Its just a nicer way of saying ‘lets deregulate so we can steal all the money we can.’ Republicans don’t give a damn about the government, big or small. They only care about gorging themselves and their corporate handlers with our money. Free and clear, no investigations, no worries, no answers.

  31. jurassicpork says:

Fun factoid: Grover has to part his hair before he takes a piss.

The trouble with America, as I see it, is that we’re too forgiving of Republicans and too quick to endlessly condemn Democrats for far lesser crimes. Hopefully, Bush will prove to be a useful idiot and to serve as an object lesson as to what happens when you let Republicans run the roost.

But, frankly, I doubt it. This, too, shall pass.

  32. Mr. Evil says:

    Marie Says: #26

I totally agree. I’d love nothing more than to see Grover Norquist shrunken and squeezed (investigated for information and complicitness in the Bush/Cheney 8 year crime spree). The only thing that should be drowned in a bathtub is the neocon ideolgy once and for all.

  33. Buckie Boy says:

  34. AngryOne says:

Unsurprisingly, it took less than 24 hours for the conservative chattering classes to blame the Bush recession on President-elect Barack Obama. The usual suspects, including Rush Limbaugh, Fred Barnes and Dick Morris, pinned two days of steep stock market declines on Obama’s election. Of course, the recent bloodbath on Wall Street has nothing to do with Obama and everything to do with what John McCain deemed “the fundamentals of our economy” being weak. And as history shows time and again, the American economy and stock market almost always do better under Democratic presidents.

    For the details, see:
“Conservatives Blame Bush Recession on Obama.”

Using 2006 as a cut off line, we had ten years of deregulation (Starting with Newt and his minions.) and six of tax breaks for the rich. By the right wing’s measure our economy should be booming. I like the Count but I prefer the Muppets. Animal, Beaker and Bunsen Honeydew were my faves :)

  83. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

OOO- maybe the Repugs could do a reality “Pigs in Space”?

  84. fletc3her says:

I was pretty sure the Clinton era economic policies were to blame or possibly those of the Carter administration.

  85. dbadass says:

The Swedish Chef has really good health care and by all empirical standards is doing way better than Richie Cunningham or all other made up American icons…

  86. Braised_Cod says:

Do horns come with that tale?

  87. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Hey, dbadass, if you get the chance to smack RaptureRetard og bitbit again, give them this one for me since I always seem to miss them. I put it on the gay marriage/adoption thread but it was a bit late–

The King James version of the Bible that they like to thump was authorized by King James I of England, a known homosexual who had a lover named Steenie that he openly kissed in public on the mouth. He also Never bathed and his hands were as black and smooth as satin. He also liked to tromp in the entrails of the animals he killed so the gore crusted on his legs and garments.

  88. sectionop92 says:

Norquist should get the Count to further dumb down his kiddie economics that he tries to fluff as Ivy League/Washington think tank genius.

  89. JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin says:

As others have said here, why is Grover even given a platform for his crackpot views? The man has been consistently wrong on everything, yet he is still thought of as a legitimate pundit.

Is the MSM so desperate for “balance” that they will put any crackpot on, as long as he’s right wing?

  90. JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin says:

Actually, this is all Grover Cleveland’s fault.

  91. follow the money says:

    was that man…
really serious when he said this?

    I mean..
was he loaded, drunk, high, or …maybe stoned?

should start a drug testing program…from the president down..all of em’..if you want to know who pays for it?
tell the oil companys to do it also..

they dealt in oil, drugs and …sex..
    didnt they?
laura bush did say bush had a cute a$$..

  92. Keith says:

Grover’s disease is a rare, transient skin disorder that consists of small, firm, raised red lesions, most often on the skin of the chest and back. Diagnosis of this disorder becomes apparent under microscopic examination when the loss of the “cement” that holds the skin cells together is observed. Over time, as the skin loses the “cement”, the cells separate (lysis). Small blisters containing a watery liquid are present. These blisters tend to group and have a swollen red border around them. Grover’s disease is mainly seen in males older than forty or fifty. Its cause is unknown but it is thought to be related to trauma to sun damaged skin.

  93. hussein toasterhead says:

    Jackie Says:

You have to love Grover as K Street King with the Abramoff scam. Grover lost his KKK card when he married a Pakistan lady because no American woman would take him even with his money. Now the Pakistan lady now is a US citizen so much for Homeland Security checking on these marriages.

    ________

She’s Palestinian, actually, not Pakistani. And she was always a US citizen. What she was thinking marrying Norquist is anybody’s guess.

  94. SwedishSkinJer says:

Norquist is parroting the typical right-wing lies: the Democrats are responsible for the state of the economy. The Republicans are *not* immaculate! We rise and fall as one nation. If Mr. Norquist wishes to engage in the blame game, so be it. His laughable assertions only serve to lessen the credibility of the right-wingers.

In other news, Michelle Malkin is continuing to submit her hatred on her website. Let’s post there and show those right-wingers how crushing the absolute truth is, unfiltered and clear. That woman has fire in her heart.

  95. Alecto says:

Has he shrunk in relevance to the size that his head fits in a bathrub so we can drown him?

  96. Alecto says:

    SKdeA Says:

Actually, JFK issued treasury notes, based on silver, in competition with the Fed, and look what happened to him. That’s what he meant…
Can someone explain to me how it is a good thing to privatize the bank that makes and controls our actual money? Shouldn’t that at least be the role of government?

    REPEAL THE FEDERAL RESERVE ACT!!!!!!!

  97. lettersfromatory says:

Oh please, this moron can’t expect anyone to believe him, can he?!?!

  98. jpopphan says:

The current economic crisis is the result of the failure of unregulated, unfettered capitalism. It is not the result of the Democratic party winning a slim majority in Congress in 2006. It is not the result of the successful campaign of President-elect Barack Obama. It is, however, the unavoidable fruit of the under-regulation promoted by the GOP and its free-market purists who think that the magic market will solve all problems.

If anything, this economic crisis should demonstrate to all of us how bankrupt the ideology of people like Norquist really is. A properly regulated, well managed and responsible company is a successful one. Capitalists are incapable of regulating themselves. It is for their own safety and the security of the rest of us who also live in the same economy as the fat cats. We all win when we are all responsible.

  99. pablito says:

OK Norquist, back to the basement with cheetos and porn, you fat slob of a hack.

  100. marlow says:

Didn’t get to “drown it in the bathtub” did ya? Whiny little bastard, you go away now.

  101. tombaker says:

    grover is a beetledick

  102. Harry Potter says:

You’ve gotta love leftist propaganda. This site is full if it. It may be part of the reason I hate politics since most of it is shaped on lies by two groups that don’t actually represent the majority. All they are is the only choices we have.

Here’s some truth for you so you can stop deluding yourselves that everything bad in the world is done at the hands of Repbulicans and Democrats are perfect saints that will save us all…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs

Obama profited from the Crisis and was friends with a slumload who he abandoned to avoid tainting his campaign. The great “Messiah” Obama is a false God who has done nothing yet to be given such devotion.
