I was watching the documentary "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" about sports and steroids when, during a section on pro-wrestling, I realized this is what guys like Hannity and O'Reilly are doing. They are the hybrid of a news person/commentator and a wrestling personality. It all fell into place after that epiphany as I played back all the old clips of many right wingies and their sandbox bully stylings. Somebody realized if we mix the bluster and pseudo-manliness of the wrestler with a commentator we get a new type of news which shoves the viewer into their hind brain, non-thinking brain where they are truly the numb consumer Huxley would recognize. Add to that the canard to shout a lie as loud as you can and it will stick, mix it with some ear and eye of newt and you get a very toxic brew. Sean Hannity. Bill O'Reilly. Even Coulter plays the part...

Any of the high profile liberal personalities would not waste their time with Hannity. Furthermore, Hannity couldn't handle the pressure of having to spar with a strong personality that had brains. Hate saying this about anyone, but he is a jerk and a bully.

There is only one person that could intice me to sit and watch Sean Hannity's ugly, smug face. Match him up with Phil Donahue, and I'd never miss Hannity being slaughtered!

Conservative commentators typically appeal to a broad base of conservatives and independents.

Liberal commentators typically only appeal to a narrowly defined liberal base.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Is that how it really looks from the far right? You honestly think that windbags like Limbaugh appeal to a "broad base of conservatives and independents"?????

Of the conservatives I know, only the ones farthest to the right will even admit listening to Rush, or watching Hannity or O'Reilly. And I have yet to find anyone who agrees with anything Ann Coulter has to say. This is hardly the "broad base" you describe.

Of course, I admit that not all liberals plonk themselves down in front of Olbermann and Maddow. Not because they don't fit into a "narrow" definition, but because most of them have better things to do than watch TV.

You see -- you were right when you described a liberal audience as being one of independent thinkers. Anyone -- liberal or conservative -- would have a hard time holding an audience of people who prefer to do their own thinking. Folks like Limbaugh, Savage, Beck, etc. don't have that problem. Their audience is made up of people who can't think for themselves and need somebody to tell them who to be mad at for their problems.

Tim43:

I respectfully disagree. Conservative commentators offer only unsubstantiated, shameless bile that reasonable independents deplore. Hannity is spineless, generally disrespectful, and would never let Colmes have a respectable amount of time on air. If Olbermann or Maddow sat down with him, I trust that he wouldn't smirk so often at the mention of a liberal or progressive again.

Big league liberal? Is there such a thing? Liberal's cannot even compete in talk radio. Everytime they try, they bring down the radio station's audience to dismal numbers. As far as commentators on TV, name one liberal that even comes close to the conservative commentators in viewership numbers.

So, I ask again, is there such a thing as a big league liberal? I mean one that is actually interesting enough to hold an audience of independent thinkers.

Sean Hannity is an uneducated, willfully ignorant small minded loser of a man, but he's smart enough to know that any of those liberals mentioned would eat his lunch daily. So no surprise he's going it alone, because like all conservatives he's also a coward.

You seem to see liberals the same way the great Phil Ochs did in the 70's. He describe them as ten degrees left of center at the best of times and ten degrees right of center when it effects them personally. He wrote a great song about it called Love me, I'm a liberal

First off, who says Colmes is a liberal? And who believes that liberals are good, anyway?

As far as I can tell Liberals tend to interpret the law to mean that those who have the money to spend liberally on gifts and junkets possess great wisdom and insights that deserve to be catered to in all matters legislative.

So-called Liberal Democrats created a political environment back in the 1960's and early 1970's in which the likes of neo-conservative scum bags such as Ronald Regan were able to convince people there was a different, better way of doing things that would be good for the nation.

Of course, they were lying through their teeth, and merely wanted the opportunity to cater to the whims of the wealthy class themselves.

What we've got in Congress right now are liberal democrats bearing the names of Pelosi, and Reid, and Hoyer, and Wasserman-Schultz, etc. These are the people who failed to hold the bush administration accountable from the beginning. These are the people who are helping the neo-Cons loot the U.S. Treasury as they are on their way out the door.

The U.S. Taxpayer is still paying interest on the debt generated by the Savings and Loan bailouts from 30 years ago. (Remember neil bush and Silverado Savings and Loan???) What do you imagine the interest payments on the Trillions of Dollars being given away to paulson's and bernake's friends is going to be? If you earn $50,000 per year, I'll wager your share of the interest chages going to service this debt will about to $700 per year, for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! And your grandchildren will have to pick up the burden when you leave the scene.

I don't have any problem with those government programs that were developed to assist people who lack the resources to meet their own personal needs. Our government was created to operate in order to benefit the "general welfare" of the entire population. But thanks to liberals and "conservatives" alike, what seems to happen is the government works to benefit the wealthy and influential, so that they can create a few jobs -- thereby benefitting the masses.

Type etymology into google and use one of those sites to type in some words that refer to government and society. For the latter I came up with this: (from the Latin "socius" meaning "companion"): Society refers to a group of people or companions. What do companions do? They take a journey together. And being together, that means they all share in the trials and rewards of that journey.

In bush's world, the "economy" was interpreted to mean the current rate of return the Wall Street investment crowd was taking in. It disregarded the growing unemployment, the diminishing manufacturing, and the growing indebtedness of most Americans. It also included the inflated figures provided by hedge fund derivatives that are currently crashing and the hundreds of billions of dollars being wasted on the illegal occupation of Iraq.

Capitalism in America has collapsed. The capital has all been stolen, and what's left in its place is bad commercial paper. The institutional structure of American capitalism are being held up by massive government grants, and no one is bothering to check out what's happening with the cash that's being shoveled out the door. We've replaced Capitalism with government handouts for the wealthy.

Either we get away from the mistaken idea that it is important to maintain the activities and lifestyles of a certain class of people while the rest of us go broke and lose our homes, or we slip down the drain as the tub empties. Either we're in this together, or we'll be at each other's throats this time next year.

Have a happy Thanksgiving.

The U.S. Taxpayer is still paying interest on the debt generated by the Savings and Loan bailouts from 30 years ago. (Remember neil bush and Silverado Savings and Loan???) What do you imagine the interest payments on the Trillions of Dollars being given away to paulson’s and bernake’s friends is going to be? If you earn $50,000 per year, I’ll wager your share of the interest chages going to service this debt will about to $700 per year, for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! And your grandchildren will have to pick up the burden when you leave the scene.

I don’t have any problem with those government programs that were developed to assist people who lack the resources to meet their own personal needs. Our government was created to operate in order to benefit the “general welfare” of the entire population. But thanks to liberals and “conservatives” alike, what seems to happen is the government works to benefit the wealthy and influential, so that they can create a few jobs — thereby benefitting the masses.

Type etymology into google and use one of those sites to type in some words that refer to government and society. For the latter I came up with this: (from the Latin “socius” meaning “companion”): Society refers to a group of people or companions. What do companions do? They take a journey together. And being together, that means they all share in the trials and rewards of that journey.

In bush’s world, the “economy” was interpreted to mean the current rate of return the Wall Street investment crowd was taking in.

The capital has all been stolen, and what’s left in its place is bad commercial paper. The institutional structure of American capitalism are being held up by massive government grants, and no one is bothering to check out what’s happening with the cash that’s being shoveled out the door. We’ve replaced Capitalism with government handouts for the wealthy.

Either we get away from the mistaken idea that it is important to maintain the activities and lifestyles of a certain class of people while the rest of us go broke and lose our homes, or we slip down the drain as the tub empties. Either we’re in this together, or we’ll be at each other’s throats this time next year.

Have a happy Thanksgiving.

Hartmann would school him, but Hannity never shuts up long enough to allow anyone to make their point. Hannity is a pussy, and he's totally irrelevant. Honk if you'd kick his ass given the opportunity.

Much love to Mike Malloy, but I think his brain would explode in that situation;) Howsabout Thom Hartmann? Now THAT would kill Hannity's power in ONE segment. With dignity. The right-wing doesn't have to present the facts. They just have to instill doubt & Hartmann can an does counter WITH facts. A lovely (I wish)....

Hannity can't find any meek, milquetoast moderates like Colmes to put up with his abuse. And of course, we all know that Faux News's idea of balance is an uber-right winger and a center-right moderate (because the nation is center-right, after all).

What tripe.
