Richard Sanders, a justice on the Washington State Supreme Court, confirmed yesterday that he called Attorney General Michael Mukasey a “tyrant” at a Federalist Society dinner last week:
After listening to Mukasey defend the Bush administration’s counterterrorism policies — its detainment practices at Guantánamo Bay, its interpretation of the Geneva Conventions’ reach — Sanders stood and shouted “Tyrant! You are a tyrant!”
“Frankly, everybody in the room was applauding or sometimes laughing, and I thought, ‘I’ve got to stand up and say something.’ And I did,” Sanders told The Seattle Times Tuesday. “I stood up and said, ‘Tyrant,’ then I sat down again, then I left.”
Sanders said he didn’t learn until the next morning that, moments after this episode, Mukasey passed out at the podium.
Perhaps Mukasey passed out because he had difficulty being confronted with the truth? I mean — when you serve Bushco, it’s a foreign concept.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:58 amGood for you, Richard Sanders
November 26th, 2008 at 9:58 amWe have a candidate for the Supreme Court….
November 26th, 2008 at 9:58 amThe rarity of truth among the powerful. Possibly criminal would be appropriate.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:59 amGood for Richard Sanders. And shame on the rest of the attendees for applauding Mukasey and his support of illegal and immoral policies. The Bush Attorney Generals, all three, have been a disgrace to this nation.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:01 amCall a spade a spade, something must have rung so true it gave Mucky a stroke.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:04 amIt wasn’t MOMENTS after. It was WELL after the comment that the collapse happened. God, liberals give out the Fox News line once again. George Soros, make these people hire a fact-checker PLEASE? Or hire an intern?
November 26th, 2008 at 10:07 amSanders said he didn’t learn until the next morning that, moments after this episode, Mukasey passed out at the podium.
– - If a Washington state judge gives Mukasey a vapor spell, how’s he gonna stand up to al-Qaida?
November 26th, 2008 at 10:07 amFrom what I’ve read, Sanders is actually very conservative, and has been a prominent speaker at events for the “pro-life” movement.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:07 amThe conscience of a Conservative?
November 26th, 2008 at 10:08 amAnother fine man from our Great State.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:11 ambamjaya,
I am offended with your gratuitous use of the word God. Show some respect little guy, or you will burn in Hell while incubi rip your eyes out and skull fck you.

I hope not. Sanders is a heavy-weight social con. His views on executive power show he passes one very important test, but not enough I hope for him to be a viable appointee. At least not from our side.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:12 amIf he was attending a meeting of the Federalist Society, that is a given. It’s a good thing he exited quickly. I’m sure most of the crowd wanted to have him renditioned to Morocco for a little re-education. If I were Richard Sanders, I wouldn’t fly in any small planes for quite some time.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:17 amHe omitted the “sic semper” part.

That’s gotta be the worst place to be tortured. Not only do they pull out your fingernails and shock your genitals, but they talk you into buying a suitcase full of overpriced teapots and tagines and stuff.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:24 ambamjaya “God, liberals give out the Fox News line once again. George Soros, make these people hire a fact-checker PLEASE? Or hire an intern? ”
Claiming that Soros has anything to do with Think Progress is a lie long promoted by FOX and that fact that you repeat it as some kind of ‘argument’ makes you the FOX propagandist.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:24 amSo things have gone so far “to the center” (a la Bush-speak) that even members of the Federalist Society are calling them on it ???????????????????????????
November 26th, 2008 at 10:25 amWell, we only know of one member who is calling them on anything. The membership of the Federalist Society reads like a Who’s Who of American fascists, including Lawrence Silberman, Robert Bork, Ted Olson, Samuel Alito, John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, ect.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:29 amI applaud Judge Sanders for speaking the truth and being unafraid of voicing his discontent with the outgoing administration. Mukasey not only considers waterboarding “acceptable” (as we can conclude from his evasive attitude on answering torture inquiries from the press), but he is also a mouthpiece for the backward policies of the War on Terror and extremism that Bush has so gladly promoted via lies and dishonesty that damns his credibility.
However, let us be humane. I would never want something terrible to befall Mukasey in a time of uncertainty and foreign struggles. I certainly don’t respect him, but I would not wish death upon him.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:37 amBarnjaya,
November 26th, 2008 at 10:42 amOk, I’ll bite. Educate us. How long is “moments”? How long is “well”?
Any guesses on how long it will take the reich wing nutcases to start slandering this truth-teller for being anti-american or some other similar horse hockey? My guess is it will be in 5, 4, 3…..
November 26th, 2008 at 10:44 amMight you sir be related to the other Mr. Sanders (I, VT) who likes to speak his mind? I imagine he would like to meet you. It was nice to hear your voice, sir.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:44 amWell done Judge . . . well done.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:45 amKudos, Judge Sanders… I am glad we still have some true patriots left in this country.

Whatever Bamjaya, this semantic nitpicking is pretty pathetic considering Mukasey’s collapse was barely a footnote in the post. Get real.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:56 amMichelle Malkin, the hate-monger for the right-wingers, is already crying over how the actions of Sanders completely caused her to lose respect for him. As if he committed some atrocious act. Exercising free speech when it is most needed is the most honorable thing a patriot could do, even though I believe the courts prohibit him from making such statements in public.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:57 amThe stopped clock might have been right that evening but you do not want anyone who attends Federalist Society events to receive a Supreme Court nomination. If membership in that winger organization isn’t a disqualifying factor for judicial nomination under Obama then we all got hoodwinked.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:08 amMukasey should never have been confirmed as Attorney General. Not being Alberto Gonzales isn’t enough qualification– there are literally billions of people who are not Alberto Gonzales.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:22 amWhoa, sounds like one of the Fascist Society Members has lost his stomach for using the iron fist of power.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:23 amThank you Judge Sanders. The people in the room with you appear to be traitors. That must be very difficult to tolerate.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:32 amGive Judge Sanders a the award for speaking the truth. As for that so call fainting spell, I Judge need not worry old Musk Rat has been sick for a while and no doctor can help him. No honest educated person in Law would support the Bush torture Policy so we know Musk Rat is getting paid. Part of his deal for taking the job was to have alot of vacation time to care for his illness. In other words Musk Rat had a mimi stroke and has been ill so the shout out would not have made a difference in what happen.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:38 amThe degenerate, Zionist hack job Mukasey have thrown his lot in with the criminal Republicans. Mukasey has become the defender of the sewer as his fellow thugs rape our country.
When will America deal with the traitors amongst them?
November 26th, 2008 at 11:46 amSmart judge.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:51 amThank you Judge Sanders for speaking the truth to these WAR CRIMINALS.

November 26th, 2008 at 12:18 pmon this board since Exlexlia was around explaining how the booing being done to bush wasnt “thunderous”
I haven’t seen many trolls or rightist agents on this website for a while. They seem to be controllable, unimpressive in numbers, and lacking in intelligence. Generally, they’re no better than the idiots that they try to defend by launching even more smears and shameless lies.
November 26th, 2008 at 12:30 pmI’m thankful for this comment.
Let the truth ring loud and true!
November 26th, 2008 at 12:44 pmproud to be from WA again.
November 26th, 2008 at 12:47 pm.
Judge Sanders sent Mukasey into that tailspin at the podium.
Keep in mind, Mukasey thinks he is not a tyrant, or at least as he him self defines the word. Forget the fact that his vision and reality aren’t in alignment. So, while under the pressure of speaking, interrupted with the flood of a heavy dose of realism, “YOU”RE A TYRANT” caused Mukasey to have to parse and compute this disparity in his puny brain causing it to literally, shortcircut.
See America, what a little revolt can do…
… Now imagine, if the Nation joined in, what could be accomplished.
.
November 26th, 2008 at 12:50 pmIt just shows how far off the reservation Bush policies are that at a Federalist Society gettogether, a conservative judge would be yelling “tyrant!” at the AG of a Republican administration. Unbelievable!

Malkin’s idea of free speech is what is approved by her and her like-minded censors. She and her neophyte wanna-be history scholars need to go back to complete their basic requirement course work so they can speak more accurately on things like colonial and Constitutional history.
The next thing they’ll do is try to claim they are the party of dissenters.
November 26th, 2008 at 12:55 pmRichard Sanders for AG!!! That would be a real Change!
November 26th, 2008 at 1:41 pmWe need more judges like Sanders to speak out and call a spade a spade. Thank you Mr. Sanders.
November 26th, 2008 at 2:24 pmOn a side note: Dubya passed out too.
November 26th, 2008 at 7:42 pmPassing out, that wasn’t Dubya’s problem. Nearly drowning in his own vomit of stale bourbon and sour digestive track bile, that was the issue. So un-Presidential.
