The number of Americans on food stamps may exceed 30 million for the first time this month, putting a spotlight on hunger during a period of increasing unemployment and rising food prices. “Economists say an increase in food stamp benefits would help the economy overall by concentrating relief on those most likely to spend the money quickly.”
Later today, President-elect Barack Obama is excepted to name former Fed chairman Paul Volcker to lead a new White House panel aimed at reviving growth. Austan Goolsbee, a University of Chicago economist, will be the top staff official on the Economic Recovery Advisory Board and will be a member of Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers.
Politico’s Ben Smith reports that labor leaders are dispirited by the fact that Obama’s secretary of labor was not introduced as part of his economic team. “I wish that [the secretary of labor] would have been among them,” former Michigan congressman David Bonior. “I hope they take that job seriously.”
Obama is calling on banking executives to forgo their bonuses this year. “I think that if you are already worth tens of millions of dollars, and you are having to lay off workers, the least you can do is say, ‘I’m willing to make some sacrifice as well,” Obama said in an interview with ABC News that will air this evening.
Yesterday, the New York Post reported that right-wing pundit Ann Coulter reportedly “broke her jaw,” and her mouth “has been wired shut.”
As the Bush administration readies its ruling on whether the government should regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, it has sent an email to mayors around the country with a link to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce blog post that falsely warns that “a federal cap on greenhouse gases ‘will operate as a de facto moratorium on major construction and infrastructure projects.’”
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) stated yesterday that Obama’s cabinet picks have been “just about perfect.” “Everything that President-elect Obama has done since election night has been just about perfect, both in terms of a tone and also in terms of the strength of the names that have either been announced or are being discussed to fill his administration,” he said.
And finally: Blackberry-addict Barack Obama refuses to let go. Contradicting recent reports that suggested Obama would have to surrender his Blackberry upon entering office, the President-elect told Barbara Walters in an interview that he’s trying to figure out a way to keep his lifeline to the outside world. “I’m negotiating to figure out how can I get information from outside of the 10 or 12 people who surround my office in the White House,” Obama said.

Ahhh, yes. Finally some good news just in time for inclusion in tomorrow’s Thanksgiving “things to be thankful for” grace at the dinner table.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:04 amI doubt Obama will get anywhere with stopping employees at banks getting bonuses.
Gordon Brown tried that over here in the UK but found that without nationalising a bank the government simply cannot exert that level of control. Even if the government buys shares in a company, they cannot dictate everything that happens (much as they might like to).

I believe John Edwards should have been the labor dept. nominee standing among the others at that press conference.

Egad — 30 million is approximately 10% of our population. And the sad thing is that food stamps, originally intended to supplement a family’s food budget, nowadays is far more likely to be the family’s entire food budget, since the cost of everything else has gotten so high. But it’s a lot better than nothing.
I sense the economists are right. People on food stamps are far more likely to spend what they have instead of socking it away in a Swiss bank account. Increasing their benefits will ensure this 10% will not only eat better, but spending will increase, which will be a positive step to help get the economic flywheel moving again.

November 26th, 2008 at 9:30 amObama is calling on banking executives to forgo their bonuses this year.
This should have been part of the bailouts the banks get. There should be a clause saying there can be no bonuses and also setting executive salaries at no more than X times an average employee salary. It is ludicrous to think that these guys would give themselves a bonus after driving their company into the dirt.

ENOUGH ALREADY! Bush has to know that Obama will undo all this harm he is causing, so why is he still doing it? If I hear one more pundit talk about how much Bush is cooperating with Obama I think I’ll barf. If he truly wanted to help Obama and this country he would sit back in the white house and enjoy the little time he has left as King George, without his continued pissing in the well.

This definitely should be a clause included in ALL the bailouts we’ve doled out to FAILING companies. I also agree with you on setting a limit on executive pay, but I believe it is something that the lunatics on the Right would make a complete stink…These execs are really disgusting with their greed though.

It conflicts with the Presidential Records Act, if nothing else, and creates a whole plethora of legal questions. It creates an environment in which the President or the President’s close advisors can use a non-White House email account to discuss things like, say, firing U.S. attorneys who aren’t being “loyal Bushies” and then arguing that these emails aren’t subject to subpoena because they’re personal, not official.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:54 amThe focus needs to be at the bottom of the economy. As I have said many times: trickle down does not work! Trickle up will work! Increase food stamps. Speed up the glacial processing of VA benefits for our war wounded and disabled! Create infrastructure- and services-related job corps like those of the CCC. Invest in becoming the world leader in green economy.

Presidential Records Act, you know the law that Bush and Cheney have ignored for the last 8 years.
Every email and communication from the President and Vice President has to be gathered for the Historical archives by law.
I think he should keep the blackberry though so he can keep reading news and blogs to keep himself informed on what is going on, rather than being insulated by staff and have it routed though the white house email server. He should demand to keep unfettered access to his access to information from the internet though. That was my first thought. I tried to find out, but all I could find was that the jaw was broken as a result of a “fall” — no details on where, but the “when” was about a month ago, so this may be the result of her injuries being worse than originally thought.

Smashing the porcelain, ripping the doors off their hinges, he is determined that there will be nothing worth owning by the time the bastards kick him out. His midnight regulations, opening America’s wilderness to logging and mining, trashing pollution controls, tearing up conservation laws, will do almost as much damage in the last 60 days of his presidency as he achieved in the foregoing 3000(1).
His backers – among them the nastiest pollutocrats in America – are calling in their favours. But this last binge of vandalism is also the Bush presidency reduced to its essentials. Destruction is not an accidental product of its ideology. Destruction is the ideology. Neoconservatism is power expressed by showing that you can reduce any part of the world to rubble.

There’s also no reason he can’t get a government-issued EOP Blackberry for official business – plenty of government agencies issue them, with encryption strong enough for sensitive but unclassified information. He couldn’t use it for sharing any classified information, but then no government email system is allowed to do that.
And he could theoretically keep his own Blackberry for personal use outside of work for talking about the White Sox and Spider-Man, but since Presidenting isn’t exactly a 9-5 job, there’s a bit of grey area in terms of what “outside of work” means.

Senator Clinton once served on the board of WalMart.
Obama was also smeared by the Republicans by serving on a board, with Ayers, a board crated by a former Republican ambassador.
Just because someone serves on a corporate board for a short time, he retired from the Marines in Feb of 2007, does not make that person guilty of any crimes that corporation may have committed before he was even asked to serve on that board.
You are still trying to pull a smear job, by association, a weak one at that, all in an attempt to smear Obama by association, just as you do every day. America’s problems are rooted in sorry leadership. Leadership guru Dr. Deming said “Quality starts in the boardroom.” It also starts in Congress and the White House.
How does one get on four corporate boards and head up the Chamber of Commerce’s energy initiative? It’s not by thinking differently than the club.
What have our leaders given us? Executive incentive compensation, endless profit growth, outsourcing, cutting pay and benefits, substituting cheaper ingredients, buying political influence, twisting America’s foreign policy for business interests, are but a few.

November 26th, 2008 at 11:36 amHere’s the other piece of the puzzle. Bush gutted much of the capacity of our federal government to deliver services by contracting to the private sector.
Thus any rapid stimulus program has to go through private companies, hence the kajillions of lobbyists in D.C. wanting a piece of the $5 trillion financial rescue and the $500-700 billion stimulus program.
Obama needs to throw most of the corporate money changers out of the hallowed halls, but he can’t. First, they donated to his campaign through PAC’s and bundlers. Second, he needs to funnel money through them to stimulate the economy.
Bringing a contracted function back in house is a big job and takes time. Time is something Obama doesn’t have on the stimulus package.
