Rove: We Don’t Need A Change In Our Health Care System

rove.jpgIn an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal today, Karl Rove applauds Barack Obama’s appointment of a “first-rate economic team,” cheering the selections of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, National Economic Council director Lawrence Summers, Council of Economic Advisers chief Christina Romer, and OMB head Peter Orszag.

But while issuing compliments of most of Obama’s nominees, Rove issued this back-handed swipe at Melody Barnes, who ThinkProgress first reported would be chosen to lead the White House Domestic Policy Council:

The only troubling personnel note was Melody Barnes as Domestic Policy Council director. Putting a former aide to Ted Kennedy in charge of health policy after tapping universal health-care advocate Tom Daschle to be Health and Human Services secretary sends a clear signal that Mr. Obama didn’t mean it when his campaign ads said he wouldn’t run to the “extremes” with government-run health care.

During the campaign, Barnes helped inform Obama’s health care approach — the same approach he is now promising to pursue in office. Obama pledged to bring together “doctors and patients, unions and businesses, Democrats and Republicans” together to build on the existing system and “reduce the cost of health care to ensure affordable, accessible coverage for all Americans.”

Taking a look at the health care stats in the Bush/Rove era, it’s clear that most Americans have seen a decline in their health care at the same time that health insurance companies have reaped tremendous gains:

– Since 2000, the ranks of the uninsured have grown by 7.2 million.

Health care premiums have doubled under Bush. Employer-sponsored health insurance premiums have risen from $5,791 in 1999 to $12,680 in 2008.

– The fastest growing component of health care is health insurers’ administrative costs.

Enrollment in Medicare private plans doubled. Through such plans, insurers “have increased the cost and complexity of the program without any evidence of improving care.”

– The combined profits of the nation’s largest insurance companies and their subsidiaries increased by over 170 percent between 2003 and 2007.

Obama is putting together a team, starting with Melody Barnes and Tom Daschle, who will be committed to ending the unfairness and inequity of the current health care system. Meanwhile, Karl Rove is committed to defending the health insurance industry and preventing any change to the status quo. Fortunately, the American people are proclaiming that they are ready for the change that Obama is promising.

Comments from a criminal who will soon write his op-ed from a jail cell. Karl Rove is doing his best to stay in the public eye. Now with Karl’s choices of woman he would pick Dana to be the head of the Domestic Policy Council. Yes Karl is always sniffing around Dana the bimbo idiot and would most likely give her a job for favors. He can’t get a woman any other way. Karl’s time in power is over and he knows it but like Sarah, Karl will do his best to delay his trip to jail anyway he can.

  13. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Did you read recently that one of the large health care insurers (I forget which one) said they “might” be willing to stop discriminating against people because of preexisting conditions. Then the “if”. If the Obama passed a law requiring ALL citizens to purchase health insurance.

I say we put these thieves out of business. Put all Americans on Medicare tomorrow. Then revamp Medicare so that it pays medical providers a fair price for the services they render. Medicare can hire the people working for the private Health Insurers to administer to the new program so that they don’t lose their jobs. To hell with the executives. Let them all rot. They have been killing Americans for years and deserve to lose their jobs.

  18. DidHeJustSayThat says:

American people are proclaiming that they are ready for the change that Obama is promising.

Standard right-wing explanation: No! America is center-right! In electing a liberal, one who ran on the most progressive agenda in generations and whose policies were told to be borderline “Socialism,” the American peoples mandate for change really only means different.

They want the same policies from a different party or president.

It just doesn’t stand up under the slightest bit of examination. So I got an idea: let’s all worry about what the failure that is Rove obsesses about.

They have made it their purpose to ensure that the government set up By the People, Of the People, and For the People DOES NOT FUNCTION DOES NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY.

They never wanted the government set up By the People, Of the People, and For the People to function.

They are traitorous to the cause of OUR government.

    They are traitors, PERIOD.

  29. MapleStreet says:

Agree that Rove is not only useless, but a negative influence on humanity.

But also, as has been pointed out by others in other threads, providing healthcare would also be a way of providing government money going to businesses.

If the govt paid healthcare for the automakers, they would save that amount. Likewise for the finance sector. Likewise for any employer that already pays healthcare.

If you believe in trickle down (and I don’t), that would be one gigantic infusion of trickle down case across the board.

  33. had enough says:

Bernie Ward a past host on kgoradio.com who is now in prison for 7 years was the best promoter of single payer health care. He saw many sides of the issue as his wife is a pediatrician. The powers that be did shut him up…

    1. there were 99 others involved in his image exchange – but only Bernie was arrested

    2. if he chose a full trial, as he wanted in order to tell his side of the story, he was faced with 25 years of prison and heavy fees.

    3. AND…. he has been transferred from SF CA to the prison facility in Beaumont Texas. It seems to me, the powers that be wanted to get him the furthest away as possible from kgo 810am, AAR, Nova M radio and the Ed Schultz Show…. and they did – what other region is more isolated than this?

I am not excusing what Bernie did – just not fully accepting the charges until I hear his side in his words. He receives hundreds of letters from fans, nuns, friends and family. And, being the good man he is, is helping other inmates get their GED and improve reading and writing skills.

Recently in California, a middle school teacher was found guilty of video taping girls in the locker room… and he gets only 2 years while Bernie is sent away for 7 years for image exchange? I know – one is federal and thee other is a state issue.

  35. had enough says:

    Rutabaga Says:

Mr. Rove, I work in the health care system. Which makes me completely qualified to tell you that you are DEAD WRONG.

The for profit scenario has taken many immoral paths.
    Those in the know KNOW:

    1. that patient on a ventilator in a very slow ICU unit may stay on the vent longer than needed just to keep the unit open… a closed ICU unit means the staff goes home or works other floors.

    2. the well insured patient may get more than full treatment… maybe unneeded tests, respiratory treatments, therapy

    3. for profit also puts a burden on the staff as many have to justify their work.. being on a quota system most go along with above #1 and #2… salary comes first and it can be all too easy to push reality aside to avoid a cut in pay.

I once worked in a hospital in another region and saw an excellent pulmonologist, one that refused to break the rule of putting end stage respiratory disease patients on ventilators by a new inexperienced pulmonologist that did. Guess what… we went from very slow days in the ICU to business is booming. as you probably know, once on a ventilator with a poor respiratory outlook the chances of getting of the machine alive is small.

  36. jurassicpork says:

A week after the elections, George W. and Laura Bush sat for an interview for the “National Day of Listening” sponsored by StoryCorp. The questioning was put forth by, incredibly, Bush’s own sister, Doro. Bush’s whiney, defensive answers to perfectly innocuous questions put forth by his own sister is only the least of what has to be the most perfect delineation of Bush’s psychopathology and complete, messy divorce from reality.

So sit back and witness the disintegration of a human mind in this “Interview With Big Brother.”

Yeah Bernie was railroaded, no question about it. Once again, the Right learned from its mistakes. Slimebaugh beat a felony drug rap by pleading, and is still smoking those fat cigars (instead of his bunkmate, Igor)…But, see, the genius of the Bernie thing was that it wasn’t drugs. It was prurient sexual interest in kids. Somehow Slimeball’s Dominican ‘boy-trysts’ are off limits.

I have a theory that sometime soon we’re gonna see the creation of a whole new category of capital crimes for sexual ‘predation’ on kids, btw…

We have turned health into a business, where the insurance companies dictate care to the providers, and operate at 28% in administrative costs, as they are beholden to shareholders and the bottom line.

Add up health care premiums, deductibles, and co-pays for those that can afford it. Everyone should be able to obtain medical care and the burden should be shared by everyone, as in at least 39 other nations.

Right on. It’s ok to trample a Mal-Wart temp for plastic crap on a shelf – one less person to insure in the reich-wing world view. But it’s not ok to rein in private insurers doubling costs health care premiums as the quality of care declines.

Tim: What procedures are you referring to? The Aetna Deluxe Facelift? You do know know the intention isn’t to carbon copy any flaws of other countries health systems – we have the capacity to do better as Americans. For example, our higher ed system is the envy of the world. Since federal funding enables these institutions to improve medical delivery and increase the access of care to all Americans (presently tabled), we can take that major strength and link wisely to create another.

Drug and insurance companies are not part of the solution as they should be, given their scope and size.

With so many ideas out there to greatly improve the system, why should we care to do more of the same?

I’m a CSPAN junkie, especially Washington Journal. That’s where you hear the most back-woods, racist, crap ever spewed.

The thing I never understand is the people who think it’s just A-OK for corporations to rob the American people and call it “free market”.

We’re living under a system “of the corporations, by the corporations and for the corporations”. So completely opposite of our founders it astounds me.

I’d really, really like to know, how EXACTLY have any of the so called free market policies benefited anyone (but those in the finance/insurance industry), in the past few years…….and don’t give me the “I took my money out and put it in CD’s crap………if you’re that close to retirement, of course you’re going to play it safe but what about the rest of the baby boomers? I’ve lost HALF OF WHAT I’VE SAVED. F-YOU!

I know that I “did the right thing and save for my retirement, I know that my house value is $60,0000 less than what it was estimated to be 3 years ago, I know that I have less job security than I did 10 years ago even with “higher education” and “proper training” (with the student loans to show for it).

I see my health insurance “benefit” shrinking each year with my out-of-pocket expenses rising disportionatly. Higher deductibles, higher co-pays, less coverage. God forbid hubby or I have a life threatening illness then of course, we’ll be deemed uninsurable.

I’m not entirely sure who I’m railing at but it does feel good to get it off my chest. Just THINK. THINK for a moment you pie in the sky, water carrying trolls among us, how exactly is the “free market” going to get us out of this hole without regulation and stop the “free markets” from bleeding us dry.

Events of the last year should put to bed the lie of the free market. It has failed before everyone’s eyes and still, still there are defenders……go figure.

Considering you are the STUPIDEST most IGNORANT piece of garbage this site has ever seen try to imagine how little I care what you think of anyone here. You putrid, imbecilic, cretin. You are several rungs below pondscum on the evolutionary ladder.

Timmeh the king of ignorance weighs in again.

Socialized medicine will actually REDUCE the quality of care we have available in this country.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You have no way of knowing this is true. You are just a moron who pulls idiotic OPINIONS directly out of your ASS and states them as fact.

It’s a sad day, now that the mindless have handed the keys to the kingdom to a socialist.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I just have one question. If Socialized medicine is so great, why do people come to the United States all the time to get procedures done that they can’t get in their countries?
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Oh we have great medical care if you can AFFORD IT. Tell me what happens if you need a kidney or heart transplant and cant afford it? HMMM? Thats right YOU DIE. Not in countries with a national health care system. Meanwhile about 2% of Canadians would rather have our healthcare system and what you cite is a talking point from the right I am not saying it doesnt happen but Canada also gets Americans crossing THEIR border to get healthcare. Why is it that the US is only abou 37 in worldwide rankings? You do know you are a moron and no one takes anything you say seriously dont you?

I don’t think socialized ANYTHING is the answer! Just ask people who have lived in socialist/marxist/communist paradises like Cuba, etc.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hmmmm thats a good idea why dont we ask the Frech and British if they like their healthcare systems ranked #1 and @18 respectively then we can ask capitalist paradises like Guatemala, Haiti, and El Salvador how they like THEIR healthcare systems. You CAN regurgitate what you were TOLD to think just fine but you havent a single braincell to actually THINK. Your logic is non existant and if you EVER had an original thought in your life you would take some Ibuprofen and wait for it to pass

    Rove says :

The only troubling personnel note was Melody Barnes as Domestic Policy Council director…a former aide to Ted Kennedy in charge of health policy “

I think Rove has reason to worry about this.

Major Healthcare reform will be on the Agenda, early in Obama’s Presidency…and it will be introduced in the Senate by Ted Kennedy. Kennedy’s personal situation and the mood of the country will force Healthcare to the front of the line.

I don’t know what form it will take, but I think it should…

    Cover Everyone
Eliminate Pre-existing conditions as a disqualifier
Stress Prevention and Promote a Healthy Lifestyle
Use Technology to eliminate mistakes and cut costs

And (IMHO) eliminate Profit from the Healthcare Equation.

All of Obama’s Appointments have one thing in common….they are good at getting things DONE. And Obama Needs Results to keep his momentum going. Healthcare reform fits the bill, and the Time is right.

  100. NOLIESPLEASE says:

As a Canadian I find the posts very interesting. I can tell you (after having used our system, being in the medical system from the time I was 4 until 14) most Americans are missing the major point of your system.

Your system is set up to obtain wealth (from you)while you are fine, and not pay out when your sick. The sicker the better. They push for you to die because you will not be a statistic while your alive.

Under our system, the average person making $45000 contributes approx. $1,250 per year through his taxes. Thats it!!! no co-pays, no other payments, no papers to fill , no nothing. I have a card, I go to any doctor I want, I don’t have to ask permission from the government (the biggest lie of our system that certain Americans tell. If you are unemployed, the government adjusts what you pay when you file your tax return. If you can’t afford to pay…you don’t.

We believe in this nation, if you watch my back, i’ll watch yours. This simple statement has allowed Canadians to build wealth amoung all it’s people.

IF it costs for a family of four $12,500 per year for insurance under your system and it costs a Canadian Family $2500….I will tell you what we do with our savings of $10,000….Pay the mortgage, take vacations, save for educations (our gov subsidizes 75%of tution costs) buy clothes, cars, have money for pot…hehe…amoung other things.

THIS IS WHY CANADIANS HAVE A SAVINGS …HAVE NO POVERTY DUE TO MEDICAL REASONS, ARE HEALTHIER, LIVE LONGER, BETTER SEX, LESS VIOLENCE,BETTER GRADES IN SCHOOLS (LOOK IT UP AND YOU WILL SEE)TRAVEL MORE THEN AMERICANS.

START TALKING ABOUT THE MONEY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL HAVE IN THERE POCKETS AND YOU WILL SEE HOW FAST SOCIALIZED MEDICINE COMES TO AMERICA.

    PEACE AND LOVE

Extremist right-wingers always think that moderate left-wingers are extremists. It’s hard to see where the political center actually is when you’re that far off one end of the spectrum.

  105. had enough says:

Bottom line: we are a cowardice and ignorant group of people to allow a for profit corporation to dictate, profit, deny and exclude a basic right such as health care. All other industrialized nations provide an affordable health care as they know their citizens would be out in the streets if they pulled this for profit crap.

  106. had enough says:

I agree 100% I think some things are too important and the moral imperative of them should NOT be given over to for profit enterprises that put that profit motive OVER the moral imperative of peoples lives and well being

    Per Capita adjusted dollars:

United States: $5,267 on health care/ $2,364 is government spending.
Canada: $2,931 on health care / $2,048 is government spending.
France: $2,736 on health care / $2,080 is government spending.

The fact is, we Just can’t AFFORD to keep Wasting money on a BROKEN Healthcare system.

Can America Afford Healthcare for All?

  109. billyray says:

We need a national health care system because we cannot keep paying more and more and recieve less and less. There are many people who would open a business and create some jobs if they were’nt locked into a lousy job just for the health care benefit. If America took care of America for once and quit blowing billions on other governments health care would be affordable to all concerned.

  110. Tim Vaculik says:

Sorry, but the Canadian is not telling you the whole truth about government health care.

Government health care ALWAYS means rationed health care. You simply can’t get away from this one fact. For example, none of you here seem to be bothered by the very real issues of timely access to life-saving diagnostics under government health care systems such as Canada’s.

I’m sure most of you here vilify our drug companies as well. I have news for you – you are IGNORANT of what the best health care REALLY costs.

Do any of you have a clue as to why drugs cost so much here as opposed to Canada? Please try to answer just this ONE question!

Health care itself would not be run by the government…the government would over see the corrupt for profit so called health care insurance…. example is medicare.

Over 50% of Our taxes goes towards to the pentagon…. we spend more on defense than all the countries put together. Think we could take some of that money, tax payer money, and begin helping the tax payers?

When will you face the FACT you are a bone ignorant, uninformed, brainwashed idiot who NEVER knows what you are talking about. You are also a liar and a fool FRANCE which has the Best rated healthcare in the WORLD is a national healthcare system. You just think things become true because you say them and because you were TOLD to believe them. You are simply a moron. Nice try shoehorning the talking point about medicine costing so much because big Pharma has to do research and development and YET they spend more on ADVERTISING than they do R&D you simpering baboon. Also a WHOLE lot of R&D is done with our TAX DOLLARS then GIVEN to big Pharma to make huge profits off of. The Pharmacuetical industry is one of the most profitable in the country and you are just a brainwashed FOOL, repeating the BS Rush TOLD you to think

Not to mention our healthcare is rationed right now by HMOs. The ONLY difference a national healtcare system would make even IF what Timmeh the moron said was true is that a beauracrat with NO financial stake in rationing would make the decisions instead of an HMO monkey whose JOB and financial benifit is to DENY and limit claims
