Bush’s last-minute rule gutting worker protections may violate his own guidelines.

The Labor Department is attempting to complete a rule which “would add a step to the lengthy process of developing standards to protect workers’ health” and would thus make it more difficult to regulate toxic substances and chemicals that affect workers on the job. The New York Times notes that this proposal may violate the White House’s own memorandum:

The timing of the proposal appears to violate a memorandum issued in early May by Joshua B. Bolten, the White House chief of staff. “Except in extraordinary circumstances,” Mr. Bolten wrote, “regulations to be finalized in this administration should be proposed no later than June 1, 2008, and final regulations should be issued no later than Nov. 1, 2008.”

The proposal is “one of about 20 highly contentious rules the Bush administration is planning to issue in its final weeks,” the Times notes. For more on Bush’s last-minute regulations and proposals, read ThinkProgress’s report, “Bush’s Backward Sprint To The Finish.”

You'd think these stories were right out of the Onion: Priest equates vote for Obama with sin; Psy Ops to merge with MSM; war profiteer advertises on network news. But, sadly, enough, they're real. All too real.

  2. Another Joe Says:

Anyone surprised that the gang that continues to loot the federal treasury, commits treason, war crimes, and crimes against humanity is willing to "violate" his own guidelines?

I am sure it is covered in a signing statement somewhere.

  3. gummitch Says:

The "guidelines" were intended to prevent any last-minute regulations that could easily be overturned before they went into effect, as happened with something like 200 last-minute Clinton regulations. There is always a waiting period (60 days?) during which the regulation is under something like probation. The minute the Bushies walked in they tossed out all the environmental regulations set up by the Clinton administration in the last month or so before the inauguration. The Bushies want their anti-environmental, anti-labor, anti-regulatory regulations to stick.

    Lovely, just lovely.
A departing administration practicing a scorched earth policy.

Correction: What the heck was I thinking? An administration that has practiced eight years of scorched earth policy.

If Obama had a fuukin hair, he'd 'mention' in his next address that he 'encouraged' federal employees who came into conflict with the Bushit regulatory changes to ignore them, and to document each case in which such an act was taken, and record any responses by superiors to these actions.

Darth Bobo cares NOTHING about workers and actively HATES unions. Give the man a choice of killing off a few peasants or not if it makes a rich man a few bucks he will kill them off every time. I truly believe Bobo would sell poor people by the pound for taco meat if he could get away with it

Not without recourse to weapons, it seems...

  13. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

After they pass a stimulus bill, the next thing that Congress needs to do is to pass a law overturning every order Bush has made in the last 6 months. Put them all in one bill and get rid of them all at once.

George W. Bush is like a 4 year old throwing a tantrum breaking every toy he can before he gets caught.

The man is pure evil. There is a special place in hell waiting for him.

The rule is bad enough, but DOL did not even hold a hearing or allow more than 30 days of comments. The House Education and Labor Committee held a hearing in September on this proposal: http://edlabor.house.gov/hearings/wp-2008-09-17.shtml

And one wonders what might happen in a Sarah Palin administration..... belay that, we now KNOW what would happen in a Palin administration. Clueless, feckless, stubborn, and incompetent. The Petty Tyrant is almost done. The countdown continues.....
