AP reports:
Chambliss’ victory thwarted Democrats’ hopes of winning a 60 seat filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. It came after a bitter monthlong runoff against Democrat Jim Martin that drew political luminaries from both parties to the state and flooded the airwaves with fresh attack ads weeks after campaigns elsewhere had ended.
Minnesota — where a recount is under way — now remains the only unresolved Senate contest in the country. But the stakes there are significantly lower now that Georgia has put a 60-seat Democratic supermajority out of reach.
With 92 percent of the precincts reporting, Chambliss captured 58 percent to Martin’s 42 percent. Chambliss’ win is a rare bright spot for Republicans in a year where they lost the White House as well as seats in the House and the Senate.
Cicero,
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:33 pmWhy do you hate America?
I double ducking fog dare the rethugs to try fillibustering.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:41 pmThere’s another election in 2 years, and if they obstruct, the American people will throw their asses on the trash pile.
Is does anyone else have an utter lack of surprise?
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:43 pmWhy do 58% of Georgians hate America?
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:45 pmThere are moderates such as Snowe, Collins and Voinivich…maybe we will not have to worry about more filibusters. I suspect they, the repugs, know what is good for them and yes, we can do more house cleaning in 2 years.
Beginning of a new era that will only get better.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:50 pmMore and more are getting a clue what filibuster means. I dare the repugs to filibuster and again try and rely on the ignorance of the public … getting away with their famous statement: “See the democrats are in charge and get nothing done.”
December 3rd, 2008 at 12:02 amUm, they’ve pretty got a filibuster-proof majority for any issue that a moderate Republican who doesn’t want to lose their seat wouldn’t be willing to block.
December 3rd, 2008 at 12:09 amThe deep South: former Dixiecrats and freepers working together to protect guns, graft, and gluttony. Oh and NEXT time they’ll take down Roe v Wade, unlike the 24 years having the White House.
They would vote for a comatose man if he had (R) and could hold a miniature American flag in his hand. Or a parakeet.
I’m not sure what Chambliss did to earn new support or what he would have to do to get ousted… be caught reading a book? Or perhaps using the subjunctive?
December 3rd, 2008 at 12:24 amObviously a lot of people are still hungry for abuse and punishment.
Could most Georgians (and a whopping 47% of all Americas) be suffering from battered wife syndrome?
Sometimes it certainly does seem that way…
December 3rd, 2008 at 12:35 amDems better get out and vote in 2010 like it was 2008!!!
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:03 amCowardly racist sleazebuckets can always be counted on to
fire up the Rethuglican base….
Cheers,
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:24 amGeorgia is full of bigots and idiots, I know my parents and my sister live there.
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:25 amDid Saxby get on a motorized horse and go through the cities the last couple of nights with a bright electric light and yell, “A vote against me and the gays will be a comin’!” to put him over the top?
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:28 am#12 Buckie Boy:
You know, maybe you need another comma in there. ;-)
Cheers,
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:38 amHow is being challenged to a run-off in the deep south GOP stronghold of GA a victory for the GOP? Particularly when the competition (Martin) is wet rag boring loser of a politician?
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:43 amI have lived my entire life in Georgia (well, not yet, actually) and I can tell you that I’m extremely disappointed and ashamed, but not in the least surprised at this election outcome. These rabid, braindead, conservatron sheep are like the crazy guy you see every day waving a sign that says: THE END OF THE WORLD IS TOMORROW!!! They will swear on their mothers’ graves (and believe) that it is an absolute, inevitable, undeniable fact that every Democrat ever elected will, without fail, take away all your guns, close down all the churches, and force us all into same-sex marriages immediately upon taking office. Of course, it never happens, but just like the crazy man with the sign, they’re out there again the next day screaming at you to believe, and mad as hell that you won’t. Calgon, take me away!
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:52 amzuch – I know, realized it when I hit return…
…note to self, don’t type while drinking vodka orange juice.
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:59 amDisgusting. What year are we in?
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:59 amFor a more in-depth take on life in Nazi Georgia, go to the article headed: Union Workers Sound Off on Chambliss, and read my post there. I think it’s #33.
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:00 amThere’s another election in 2 years, and if they obstruct, the American people will throw their asses on the trash pile.
RUCerious, as rational as your point is, IMHO, fails to take 3 important factors into account:
1. The dems has consistently caved in to the repugs and the most unpopular president in US history.
2. The dems have refused to hold anyone accountable, merely grandstanding and sending nasty letters after the Friday news dump.
3. The dems have allowed the repugs to block an unprecedented amount of legislation during this past session. Ried simply holds bills when they proclaim they may filibuster.
In other words – the dems are more likely to kill legislation themselves and use the threat of a filibuster as their excuse if anyone asks why – not that the mainstream media will.
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:53 amThis is patently false.
President Bush’s success rating in the Democratic-controlled House has fallen this year to a half-century low, and he prevailed on only 14 percent of the 76 roll call votes on which he took a clear position.
Democrats have backed the majority position of their caucus 91 percent of the time on average on such votes. That marks the highest Democratic unity score in 51 years.

If the Democrats broke a 50-year record in fighting the President’s agenda, it won’t do to say they “caved in” to the President.

December 3rd, 2008 at 5:33 amGeorgia has lost it’s mind. Sad.
December 3rd, 2008 at 7:10 amBUBBAs of the world united and the South Shall Rise Again . . . I suppose the folks who voted twice for Saxby the SmearMachine Chambliss are the same people who also voted twice for Bush. Therefore the adage as stated by Bush “Fool me once. . .uh. . .shame on . . . me. . . .uh. . . .Foool me . . . uh. . .twice. …shame. . .whatever” is appropriate. Nothing like another village idiot representing the South. And they wonder why they lost the Civil War?
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:42 amWhat I told when I lived in Valdosta GA (for one year – after that I couldn’t stomach it):
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:45 am1) african americans love funerals so they could sing loud
2)white people are genetically predisposed for better manners
3)”we” (white people) don’t allow our children to mix with “them” because “them” are loud and unruly
4) Waycross, Hahira, and Tipton like their black people, but they better stay out of town after the sun goes down
5) South Georgia is KKK country and proud of it
Tokin Liberal nailed the outcome call on this yesterday.
Saxby can thank Gays, Guns & Diebold for his win last night…
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:45 amThis is why I plan to move somewhere else as soon as I can.
These people believe that the unions brought down General Motors, that Obama’s ’socialized medicine’ is why there’s a growing nurse shortage, that Democrats will take away tehir guns, etc.
It’s like living in obliviousnessville…
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:56 amChambliss captured 58 percent to Martin’s 42 percent.
I CALLED IT YESTERDAY: 58-42…
December 3rd, 2008 at 9:27 amBoooo-Yah!!!
Chambliss is Georgia Senate jag-off.»
December 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 amThe Senate needs you AL FRANKEN !!
December 3rd, 2008 at 12:07 pmGeorgia is the Racist capital of America. Of course Obama lost.
Duh!
December 3rd, 2008 at 1:33 pmSo Georgia is the red caboose with no wheels. No great surprise there. Whatcha gonna do, Reid? You may have to show some spine. I won’t hold my breath.
December 3rd, 2008 at 2:07 pmNOW can we “nuke” the filibuster??
I have been trying to get folks interested in “nuking” the filibuster since the Rethug’s threatened it to get the Roberts/Alito corporatists on the Court. (How did “preserving” the thing work out for us??) What happens is that it will be mentioned a few times (Thom Hartmann & a few others) and then the issue disappears.
Look: IF WE DO NOT “NUKE” THIS THING THE REPTILIANS WILL STOP ALL CHANGE! We are facing what may amount to an existential challenge economically. If the Dem’s do not have a free hand to respond–and do so in a way that will be VERY painful for the corporatists (GET OUR MONEY BACK FROM THE THIEVES!!)–we are doomed to feudalism or worse. LET’S START PRODDING THE SENATE TO CHANGE THE RULES WHEN THEY CONVENE. If they don’t do it at the outset of the new Senate session they will not be albe to for another 2 years–and then it may be too late. Here’s a useful link (from Cato of all places):
http://www.cato.org/...
Let’s agitate for this NOW, okay? At least then we will be able to tell the Lie-berworm to slink off to the Repug’s where he belongs…
