Yesterday, a Texas judge dismissed indictments brought against Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Willacy County District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra had accused the two men of holding responsibility for prisoner abuse at privately-run federal prisons in the county. “I suggest on behalf of the law that you not present any cases to the grand jury involving these defendants,” Administrative Judge Manuel Banales said, urging the colorful prosecutor to “exercise caution as his term in office ends.” Guerra responded, “I expected it. The system is going to protect itself.”
VPres. Cheney will never be held responsible for his egregious and illegal behavior for the past 8 years in the Bush Administration, what made DA Guerra think that Cheney would be held responsible for anything else?
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:39 amI can't decide if there is no justice; or, if there is a separate type of justice for the well-connected. Hmmmm....
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:45 amAdministrative Judge Manuel Banales said, urging the colorful prosecutor to “exercise caution as his term in office ends.”
Cheney and Bush would be wise to heed this advise as well.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:47 amSpeaking of Dick, anyone seen or heard from the little monster lately?
Well, at least he's an honest judge... he stays bought.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 amIt was still a sign of new times that these charges were ever filed to begin with......keep charging them, something will stick.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 amNot unexpected.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:50 amI still have the well defined images of the noose slowly tightening, the panic, the last seconds of struggle ... beautiful.
“I suggest on behalf of the law that you not present any cases to the grand jury involving these defendants,”
Good grief! How does putting 'these defendants' above the reach of justice work 'on behalf of the law'. If, in the eyes of the law, Cheney and Gonzales are not seen as ordinary citizens, then the power of the rule of law is considerably weakened.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 amI mean, I know that this was a far-fetched prosecution that was probably politically motivated. However, Alberto is the king of sketchy politically motivated prosecutions, so i am glad that he had to have a taste of his own medicine.
December 2nd, 2008 at 9:57 amNote to Guerra: If you're going to do a thing, do it right, and check the batshit insane at the door.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:02 amWe are going to have to really crack down on this sort of thing. Just because one is the vice president or a former attorney general does not mean that one is above the law. A grand jury should have been used to make the determination as to whether or not the indictments should be dropped or not.
We definitely need a truth and reconciliation committee to examine the many, many crimes of the Bush Administration. We hold these people accountable for what they have done.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:12 amBig Dick & 'Lil Al's day will come.
So will W's.
America will not forget or forgive your crimes, boys. While you paid lip service to the Anti-abortion crowd, you not so discreetly aborted the moral ground and ethics this great Country was founded on.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:16 amYou will not be forgotten or forgave!
The judge is a republican, right? He's just "following orders." Slug!
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:17 am“I suggest on behalf of the law that you not present any cases to the grand jury involving these defendants,”
chilling.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:19 amJudge dismisses indictments against Cheney and Gonzales.»
- - These indictments were little more than a publicity stunt by a run-amok South Texas prosecutor.
Nothing to see here...
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:20 amSpeaking of Texas prosecutors, whatever happened with the Tom DeLay suit?
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:20 am“I suggest on behalf of the law that you not present any cases to the grand jury involving these defendants,” Administrative Judge Manuel Banales said, urging the colorful prosecutor to “exercise caution as his term in office ends.”
Interpretation: These two are above the law so get over it Guerra before you get hurt in one way or the other.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:22 amkeith @6... um, being against the death penalty, this scenario does me no good... what i WOULD delight in is LIFE behind bars for the war criminals that they are... not a country club prison either, of course...
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:24 amFine...let the Hague take upn the case and add W., Rice, Ashcroft, and Wolfowitz (among others) to the list of defendants.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:28 amDemocrat Soldier Says:
Maybe not in this life...
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:33 amGood point katy, I like your idea better.
December 2nd, 2008 at 10:39 amMine had an inherent bit of unintended mercy involved.
I've got to learn to think these things through !!
Dog bites man. Again. Unfortunately.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:04 amIt is not over. Guerra is appealing the decision. Banales is a Republican wannabe but doesn't have the cojones to run in the Republican Party because this area is 90% Democratic. I don't know where Banales gets off warning the DA not to do his job.
December 2nd, 2008 at 11:44 amThere is no justice, only point's of law....Blessings
