VIDEO: Georgia Republicans Rally Supporters: Palin-Chambliss 2012?

On Monday, Georgia’s U.S. Senate candidates — Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss and Democrat Jim Martin — had competing rallies around the state in advance of the Dec. 2 critical run-off contest. Martin and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) held four events around the state, while Martin held one main rally in Atlanta in the evening.

The two men’s events couldn’t have been more different. ThinkProgress attended the Chambliss rally in Perry, GA, which took place indoors at the Georgia National Fairgrounds. The attendees were predominantly white, older, and many came with their families. The crowd cheered and clapped enthusiastically, always at the appropriate times.

While people were clearly excited about the GOP candidates, some of it appeared to be manufactured. News reports showed people on-stage holding handmade signs — including ones that read “Palin-Chambliss 2012″ and “Vets for Saxby” — but those were handed out before the event by a campaign aide. A sign in the entrance to the venue said that attendees were prohibited from bringing in such large signs on their own:

As ThinkProgress reported earlier, Palin’s events throughout the state were largely a rehash of her talking points when she was John McCain’s running mate. At the Perry event, she stressed that Chambliss has a “strong independent spirit,” just like McCain — ignoring the fact that he has voted with the GOP on every single key vote from the 109th Congress onward. Watch a portion of her remarks:

McClatchy reported on some of the reasons people came to hear Palin speak, including one woman who said that she wanted her daughters to “see a fine, upstanding, Christian woman with five kids and a good career” and another who said that Palin was just a “Josephine the plumber or Sarah the fisherman.”

Martin’s event, which was held on the steps of the State Capitol, attracted a smaller crowd, but was far more boisterous, with drivers passing by honking in support. The young, diverse crowd often spontaneously shouted out replies to the speakers, and the event had the atmosphere of a college party. Additionally, Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth took direct aim at Chambliss’s policy positions, specifically noting his record on veterans issues:

In 2004, when I was flying my Blackhawk helicopter north of Baghdad and I got hit with that rocket-propelled grenade that blew up between my legs and took them off — and almost took off my right arm — the only thing that saved me was my buddies and the armor that I was wearing. … In his six years in the United States Senate, Saxby Chambliss has voted against providing armor for our troops. He has been against providing armored vehicles for our troops. And then, when my buddies and I came home, he has been against the G.I. Bill.

Watch it:

UpdateHuffington Post's Sam Stein noted that many of the networks barely covered Palin's Georgia events.

Palin-Chambliss, eh? Now that would be a sure ticket for a Democratic landslide.

  2. Anthony Look Says:

Like Chambliss would carry anything other than throwback Georgians (not all Georgian mind you, just the neandrathal kind). I can picture it now. Two mindless clowns blithering their way for the long hull of a two year campaign. The GOP should be encouraged as should the fundi conservative small "c" christian whites. What is it Chambliss says "...more of them...". As an American, and of course as a Democrat, I fully support that the GOP choose these two outlandish candidates to be the leaders of the party. McCain might regain his diginity after these to outdo the last GOP campaign in race bating and sheer religious zealot bigotry and hate. Chambliss/Palin; or Palin/Chambliss either one works for me. PLEASE do run them, we beg you. More than anything we'd love to see what the congress (and even state elections) would look like after this ticket. Keep it up GOP, no one could make this stuff up.

  3. SP Biloxi Says:

Palin-Chambliss 2012, the winning ticket. Look for a back to back re-election of Yes We Can landslide. Looks like Mr. Breck Romney, Rev. Huckabuck, and Ginger Guiliani are no longer the darling favorites for 2012 ticket.

Hmm. Well, let's see . . . they would get Georgia and Utah . . . any others?

By making fun of the legless, armless and otherwise maimed and mutilated that come back from the war fronts that he avoided and pimps.

  7. AshtabulaDem Says:

It is an excellent match-up! And one that would insure the demise of the current version of the Republlican Party. Chambliss and Palin or Palin and Chambliss? Who cares, they are both throwbacks.

  8. Bozo The Neoclown Says:

"one woman who said that she wanted her daughters to “see a fine, upstanding, Christian woman with five kids and a good career”"
it's almost like this woman was taking her kids to the zoo to see a rare species...then again, if you listen to republiscum women commentators like angry tranny annie coulter, women should be barefoot, pregnant and unemployed which most of the poor white trash flailin palin lovers usually are.

  9. vat694848 Says:

What a team they would make, fighting that pesky war against Christmas, and other nebulous things.

  10. Curlew Says:

Its interesting to note that the major networks "barely covered" the Palin atrocities in Georgia. However Huffington Post and TP both seem to tirelessly cover anything and everything that Caribou Barbie spews, no matter if she's in Georgia, Juneau or watching Russia. How about as an early New Years resolution, TP resolve that it will not continue to post "information" about this mindless twit and what she says no matter how juicy it may seem?

If Alaska secedes before 2012, can Palien still run? I think we should all push for that.

  12. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Oh, they should run together, both of them hand in hand, all the way to the loony bin because they are CRAZY if they think they'd have a snowball's chance in heck of winning a run for potus.

  13. KayInMaine Says:

Can you imagine all the misspellings if the Palin/Chambliss supporters had written their own signs? Bah hahahaha!

  14. Perry logan Says:

Keep in mind the whole Right Wing in America is basically spazzing out at this point in time. :)

Just eight years ago, they were toasting the beginning of the Republican Reich...and now their President is hated, their party dead, their policies repudiated, etc. They've been humiliating in two successive national elections, people are throwing rocks at their windows, and the whole world is partying that they're finished.

The Right prayed for victory, but their God was just too damned weak. This is shattering to the degenerate little twerps. They're likely to say or do just about anything right now.

This woman is like a herpes sore. Just when you think she's gone...

Speaking of herpes sores, here's my retort to "President" Bush touting his legacy on ABC last night. It ain't for the faint of heart.

  17. bonzo 1958 Says:

I really like the *No Blank Check* sign some jackass is holding.

Were they holding that sign while the republicans were rubber stamping every damn thing bush did for 6 years?

  18. Nevar Says:

My gosh she jsut wont “go away” will she!

Just like you. She can spell better though.

    "Palin-Chambliss 2012"

What a scary, scary thought. As someone who lives in Georgia, let me tell you what a disaster that Chambliss would be if he had any more power. I hope like hell that the Democratic turnout today is high and that we can put Jim Martin in the Senate to help President Obama carry out his agenda.

    "Vets for Saxby"

Yeah, right. It is little wonder that an aide had to pass out this sign. No self-respecting veteran would stand anywhere near the draft-dodging liar. He claimed that his bum knee disqualified him to fight in Vietnam, but he has no problem playing golf nowadays. Not to mention the horrible smear job that his campaign did on Sen. Max Cleland - a real veteran and a real hero, yet Chambliss painted him as a terrorist sympathizer.

Let's all hope that Jim Martin can pull it off today and send Saxby back under his rock.

  20. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Palin helped sink McGrampa's campaign, and this inbred nimrods are asking for a curtain call? Is the reich-wing really that stupid?

  21. mdeemer Says:

"UPDATE: Huffington Post's Sam Stein noted that many of the networks barely covered Palin's Georgia events."

A wise decision. I think it just feeds her and her supporters delusions. I think the blogs should stop making note of her activities, unless they're legitimately newsworthy, Alaska government activities.

  22. The Dogfather Says:

And yet, despite all of the Chambliss hate speech and lying over the last 6 years, and despite Palin's questionable abilities to excite anything but the red-meat reich-wingers, Chambliss will probably win today's run-off...

sigh... Then again, I suppose a 59-vote Senate (counting Liar-berman) is better than a 51-vote Senate...

  23. bratboy Says:

    Palin in 2012?? LMAO!

  24. celtic cynic Says:

And what is so wonderful about "a fine, upstanding, Christian woman" who lies, cheats and steals?
