Obama grants Fox News its first question at his press conference.

During today’s press conference, President-elect Barack Obama called on Fox News to ask a question for the first time since the election. Fox News had not been called on in Obama’s five prior press conferences. Fox’s Wendell Goler began by thanking Obama for calling on him, and then proceeded to ask about the TARP funds and Bill Richardson’s now-removed beard. Obama began by offering a light-hearted take on Richardson’s beard:

I’m going to answer this question about the beard. I think it was a mistake for him to get rid of it. I thought that whole western, rugged look was really working for him. … We’re deeply disappointed with the loss of the beard.

“With respect to TARP,” Obama said, quickly turning the page, “my team has been reviewing very carefully how the TARP program has proceeded.” Obama stressed that one of his first principles is “strong oversight.” Watch it:

I was hoping that the shut out would have lasted 8 years.

    :sigh:

  2. Wayne says:

At least he didn’t ask something totally FauxSnewz-like as in “How does it feel being the first terrorist loving Muslim President-elect?”.

  4. Leftside Annie says:

Yeah, count on the idiot from FUX to ask a stupid question (Bill Richardson’s beard)…

Jebus. That’s a burning question, all right. Enquiring minds want to know!!

  5. tom says:

I think that it would be counter-productive to shut FoxSnooze out of asking questions at press conferences. If that were to have continued, it would have overtaken the news/commentary on their programs.

Now that Obama has treated FoxSnooze as a legitimate news outlet, they have an obligation to act like a legitamate news outlet. Of course, they won’t do that but, at least, there is now no excuse or justification for their consistently bad behavior and their lack of journalistic standards.

  6. Shayne says:

No matter, they’ll be whining about something else by tonight.

  7. LiberalVoter says:

This might be a test to see what Faux Noise makes out of the reply. If they spin it rather than reporting it, that might be their last chance. What the hell am I saying? IF they spin it. It’s Faux Noise. Sigh.

  8. jpopphan says:

Well, well. I guess Faux News must be very happy now, since President-elect Obama finally allowed them to ask their stupid question… really, a question about Richardson’s beard? Come on….

  9. Zimzone says:

I’d have rather seen Richardson as Sec/State…I’ll quit whining about that now.

    Valerie Plame as CIA Director!

I might have to watch Fox News tonight. I’m very interested to find out if the Fox News team is now going to be in favor of “strong oversight.”

  11. Zimzone says:

This marks more press conferences by Obama in 30 days than Bush held in the last year.

Think you’ll hear that on Fox tonight?

  12. dumbstruck says:

I can see the FOX news headlines..

There will be a picture of bin Laden and then a paraphrase from Obama’s answer saying he admired men with beards.

  13. Buckie Boy says:

You just gotta love this guy, wow, a President that cares about the middle class staying in their homes in tough times….

….why can’t he just be President now, George can get measured for his prison outfit and Obama can take over before George harms the country any more.

Yes, but it will be in the form of a complaint.

Obama’s got a great sense of humor and I appreciate that. The beard thing is one of the funniest things I’ve heard a president say in a long time.

I’ll assume you mean intentionally funny, as opposed to moronically or ironically funny.

But yeah, Obama does have a good, quick wit. That will be a very refreshing change.

  18. 49erDem says:

Yes, I’m talking about intentionally funny. But one of the things that impresses me is that he has this sense of humor, and at the same time, he’s a very serious man.

  19. greenpagan says:

They couldn’t shutout FOX News forever, unfortunately. (But they can still kick them off the plane…?)

  21. DvlsAdvocat says:

How great is Obama? Seriously, this guy is going to do some good things. Even with (or maybe BECAUSE) of the horrible economic outlook, I’m so excited to see what he does.

  22. MapleStreet says:

OK – Faux got its BIG CHANCE to ask a probing and inciteful question and they ask 2:

Are you reviewing the TARP : Duh, well I don’t know. I sure hope someone is.

    Where is Bill’s Beard:

No wonder they are the bastion of journalism.

  23. marlow says:

GOD, it’s good to see a president capable of light and graceful wit. Bush would have informed the press corps by humiliating him publicly with some insulting and demeaning and stupid nickname designed to prop up his own pathetic mediocrity.

  24. marlow says:

    MapleStreet Says:

Good point. Fux’s first chance, and they go after Richardson’s beard. Creeping Jeezus, what losers.

  25. Jackie says:

I looked what Wendell’s background and yes Wendell is educated and has experience in Journalism. Fox News was smart to put him on the list as the others were not real Journalist. Watch Hannity blow a lid and complain as will insane O’Reilly as both are non Journalist.

  26. Peter C says:

I was struck by how shocked Goler sounded to have been picked.

… we will treat you better than you treated us, but don’t be fooled into thinking that you’ve earned our respect.

I get a kick out of the way he seems to crack himself up.

  29. Tiger8054 says:

Come on people. At least Fox gave equal time to both candidates, unlike that piece of crap MSNBC. Seriously, doesn’t it bother any of you that in MSNBC’s prime time line-up they ONLY have liberals? Keith Olbermann’s show is pathetic. He has the same group of liberal yes men: Shuster, Alter, etc. who always nod in agreement with him. It’s embarrassing. Why doesn’t Olby have the balls to actually have someone on the show that he disagrees with? And then those idiotic Special Comments. Dear God, can he sputter “sir!” some more or how about “ember of love” or “hhhhhhorible.” The guy is a cartoon. Getting back to Obama. He absolutely needs Fox on his side. Fox is number one in news, period. Its prime-time market share beats both other cable networks and the traditional networks combined. He needs to make nice with Fox. He needs to act like an adult and not hold a grudge just because he didn’t get the overwhelmingly positive ass-kissing coverage the other networks gave him. Whether you liberal ladies like it or not, Fox gave 50-50 positive coverage to Obama and McCain. They truly were “fair and balanced.”

  30. PaytonO says:

Has Barack Obama’s presidency already failed? In normal times, this would be a ludicrous question. But these are not normal times. They are times of great danger. There are a lot of people out there that could use bad credit personal loans to keep their houses. Obama wants to use TARP funds as bad credit personal loans for people that are staring down foreclosure, or at least he wants to give it to their banks on the condition that they also renegotiate terms of the loans. The toxic mortgages with the skyrocketing rates sent the number of foreclosures to the highest levels they had been in decades, if perhaps ever, and relief is needed to keep banks open.
