Online journalists now most jailed worldwide.

A new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists finds that “more Internet journalists are jailed worldwide today than journalists working in any other medium,” reflecting the rising influence of online reporting. Forty-five percent of all jailed media workers — approximately 56 people — are bloggers, Web-based reporters, or online editors. “Print reporters, editors, and photographers make up the next largest professional category, with 53 cases in 2008. Television and radio journalists and documentary filmmakers constitute the rest.” (HT: Huffington Post)

    Where did everyone go?

  2. AlphaLiberal Says:

Print journalism has become ossified and professionalized as parts of large commercial conglomerates. Intrepid or muckraking print reporters are the rare exception.

Well, someone respects the job that bloggers do, otherwise they wouldn't bother to put them in jail....

Why can't we jail Karl Rove, John Bolton or any other Bush cronies? Someone must have photos or pieces of clothing. I'm looking at you, Linda Tripp!

    - - Wait, how can that be when we know they're all wearing pajamas, slippers and sitting in their Mom's basement?

Again, I think of Bernie Ward one of the finest radio talk show hosts, expecially on issues of health care, who is doing time for 7 years, while others, 99 of them, online caught doing the same crime are ignored. And to make matters worse, Bernie has been transferred to a Beaumont Tx prison, a region furthest away from progressive radio - not to mention his family and friends.

Exchanging child porn images is disgusting, but from disgust the unfairness should not be ignored nor should the subject be avoided from fear of being viewed labeled in that light.

Bernie faced heavy fines and 25 years of prison if he chose a trial ... a trial where he could tell his side of the story as he wanted to. Until I hear it from him, I can not judge.

I'd say that 45% figure has a very close correlation to the amount of unpleasant and unflattering-to-the-estalishment truths posted by those online journalists...

Is it not, contrarily, evidence that they are more vulnerable for not having corpoRat connections which often shield the SCUM?

    Amanda Terkel,
Do you not read the comments that come from readers of this blog? I commented twice on your post regarding Huckabee's comments about gays, and I requested a correction from TP. I have received no response. Even if you refuse to issue a correction, this is a blog, you could at least address the request with an argument, rather than silence.
