Via Bonnie Erbe, a team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore has shown that there is no scientific support to claims that “an abortion causes psychological distress, or a ‘post-abortion syndrome.’” The team reviewed 21 studies involving more than 150,000 women and found that there is “no significant differences in long-term mental health between women who choose to abort a pregnancy and others”:
The researchers reviewed all English-language, peer-reviewed publications between 1989 and 2008 that studied relationships between abortion and long-term mental health.
They analyzed those that included valid mental health measures and factored in pre-existing mental health status and potentially confusing factors.
“The best quality studies indicate no significant differences in long-term mental health between women in the United States who choose to terminate a pregnancy and those who do not,” they wrote.
Despite the lack of scientific support for the abortion-depression link, conservatives on the Supreme Court cited it when they ruled against late-term abortions, saying “it seems unexceptionable to conclude some women come to regret their choice to abort the infant life they once created and sustained.”
No kidding.

December 4th, 2008 at 3:58 pmAnother right-wing talking point bites the dust!
December 4th, 2008 at 4:02 pmUnintended pregnancy was not new when reproductive choice became law. Throughout time, people have had sex and women have gotten pregnant.
The difference now is that women have the legal right to make the decision to carry a child and keep him/her, carry a child and allow the baby to be adopted, or terminate the pregnancy.
The wingers don’t want people to have sex outside of marriage and they don’t want any contraception to be used.
The underlying reasoning, in my view, is twofold. One, they want women to go back into permanent subservience and two, the majority of these wingnuts are white and want more white babies to be born.
And that is depressing.
PEACE

more like wedge issue. these clowns on the right could have overturned rove v wade during the past eight years but didn’t want to lose a lucrative wedge issue for election cycles. of course “the base” is too stupid to figure this out and gets played like fools everytime.

Dear SCOTUS nutbags,
“Some” women might come to regret a lot of things — like birth control failure, ignorance due to lack of education, or rape.
Birth control failure comes under the heading of “shit happens,” and any resulting pregnancy may or may not be wanted. If it’s not wanted, it’s probably wise not to continue the pregnancy.
Ignorance due to lack of education is fairly self-explanatory. I would guess…just think “abstinence only” or “evangelical nutbag.”
In case you didn’t know, rape is the one that while the violence and terror is in progress, there isn’t any family planning happening, by either party. No woman should be required to sustain such a pregnancy.
Love & kisses…

I’m sure there are some women out there who have had abortions and have since come to regret their decision. Guess what? This sort of thing can happen with ANY decision we make. People can regret their choices when it comes to marriage, when it comes to divorce, when it comes to getting drunk, when it comes to buying a car, when it comes to moving, when it comes to choosing a college, when it comes to getting a tattoo, even when it comes to ordering something in a restaurant.
It’s using this as an argument that something should be banned that’s stupid.
December 4th, 2008 at 4:56 pmHa! Obviously the product of leftwing commie homo “scientists”. [insert non-Christian college] University is a known hotbed of socialist baby-haters.
Actually, the “conservatives” will completely ignore this study and continue to make the same claims they always have. Inconvenient things like facts should be ignored.

December 4th, 2008 at 5:08 pmWhy don’t they do a study on post partum depression and show how many women suffer from that after giving birth to their babies. Depression is largely biochemical. Sadness is something else.

Although abortion rates have declined among all racial and ethnic groups, large disparities persist, with Hispanic and black women having the procedure at rates three to five times the rate of white women.

No, zooette, it was you folks. Don’t worry, though, “you people” is only considered offensive when used to reference African Americans. It’s a perfectly acceptable phrase when applied to other groups, like libs. Unless you are one of those white folks who feign offense over such things. No one here would be guilty of any such pretension!

It’s ok, though, because in the same opinion against late term abortion quoted above, the Court said, “In addition, if intact D&E is truly necessary in some circumstances, a prior injection to kill the fetus allows a doctor to perform the procedure, given that the Act’s prohibition only applies to the delivery of “a living fetus,”
