Cheney alienates congressional Republicans.

chenrb.jpg In September, the White House sent chief of staff Josh Bolten and Vice President Cheney over to Capitol Hill to convince recalcitrant Republicans to accept the administration’s financial bailout package. The appeal failed, however, when “House Republicans rose up en masse against their vice president,” as Politico reported. Yesterday, the White House nevertheless dispatched Bolten and Cheney to meet with Senate Republicans about the auto bailout plan, where they “heard a barrage of criticism — and offered few satisfying answers.” “They probably left with less support than they came in with,” said Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN). Sen. John Sununu (R-NH) said that Bolten and Cheney were unconvincing, admitting “that the bill wasn’t as strong as they would have liked.” A June poll found that Cheney had an approval rating of 18 percent.

Update In a press briefing this morning, White House spokesperson Dana Perino said that officials still believe there is a "chance" the auto package will pass the Senate.
Update Today, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) also said that he opposes the $15 billion auto bailout.

Isn’t alienating exactly what aliens do?

My, my how brave and full of integrity those congressional Republicans are now that Bush and Cheney are leaving, hated by America after being exposed as the incompetent, evil scum they are.

Where were those Republicans before? Kissing his *ss and doing whatever the hell he told them to, that’s where.

    Gutless, hypocritical f***s.

  3. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Gee, these Republicans didn’t rise up against Cheney when they were encouraged to support torture and invading a sovereign nation. These Republicans do want to bust Unions and don’t give a poop if Americans are out of work. No, it’s always about themselves and to hell with anyone else.

  4. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

The Democrats need to put the bill up for a vote and it the Republicans are stupid enough to filibuster it, then the Democrats need to hold a press conference and point out that the Republicans were fine with allowing billions to be given to the financial companies as a GIFT but are protesting LOANING money to the auto industry. Then they need to point out that this is jeopardizing millions of American’s jobs. Then let the chips fall where they may. Any Republican who participates in the filibuster will put their chances of being re-elected in jeopardy and they know it.

Democrats – STAND UP TO THE REPUBLICANS FOR ONCE!

  5. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Aren’t these the same Republicans that supported spying on Americans without judicial oversight and removing habeas corpus? What? Suddenly they have a conscious? I don’t believe it. If the auto industry fails and millions of more Americans lose their jobs because of this failure, then these Republican Senators will need to be painted as anti-American.

They are eating their own like the savages and canibals they are!! I wonder if they’ll be vicious enough to allow the Criminals to prosecuted?

  8. A Patriot Acting says:

These are undoubtedly the new breed of Newt Gingrich Republicons. They see their special havoc wreaking self aggrandizing brand of ultra-conservatism as the bright future of the GOP. “To hell with the nation, we have the future of our Party to think about!”

Who will poor ol’ Darth be able to tell to go ‘Cheney’ themselves after January?

Look out Lynn, he will be home full time now.

  11. A Patriot Acting says:

These Senate Republicans are each from states that profit from foreign automotive manufacturers. They are doing the bidding of these auto companies (their constituents). The irony is tha these Senators have granted significantly more than 15 billion to their homestate foreign auto makers through earmarks, tax breaks and loopholes over the last several years. They don’t see an advantage in the bail-out for their states so f@ck the rest of the Country. As a matter of fact it is in their constituents interest to further hobble the competition. These Senators need to be made to see the entire Nation’s needs over the selfish desires of manufacturers in their own states.

In other news, an investigation by authorities has shown that nearly 1 in 5 Americans are actually the undead; zombie beings who eat the brains of their victims at night, and crawl under rocks to escape the light of day.

  13. jpopphan says:

It’s too bad that these Republicans couldn’t have broken with Cheney and Bush a lot earlier on in the administration. But now since Bush is a lame duck and has one foot already out of the door, I guess they found their courage.

  14. Zimzone says:

Cheney has made more on Halliburton illegal invasion stock in the last 5 years than the automakers are asking for now.

    Yup, that’s fair…

I’ll bet Deadeye wishes he could whisk those recalcitrant Repignicans down to Gitmo for a few days of party solidarity training before that hell hole is shut down.

  18. had enough says:

Cheney could care less. As Thom Hartmann has mentioned many times, Cheney is no longer invested in the US dollar and, as we know, Haliburton is no longer a US Corp.

These so called pro America neocons have robbed our treasury, ruined our country using the disguise of a flag draped cross and are now ready to step out of the mess when the time comes.

The republicans are counting on the fact too many do not understand what filibuster means. The last couple of years we saw them walk in locks step with their talking points, blaming the dems for getting nothing done while they continue to filibuster.

I agree, an up and down vote is needed, every time to show the public just what is really going on.

In other news, 48 invitations were sent out to Repuglycan Senators to join in a festive quail shoot with the Veep.

  21. Marie says:

Cheney has no influence now that he is on his way out.
Apparently he hasn’t gotten the memo.

Previously, all Cheney had to do was nod and he was obeyed by the fawning repugs. He can’t help them any more now, they’re on their own, and if it means that middle America pays a price, repugs couldn’t care less. It’s every man for himself — the republican motto = me first.
