Right-wing pundits and bloggers are calling for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to oversee the restructuring of the auto industry. “There can’t be too many folks who would be better qualified to be ‘Car Czar’ than Mitt Romney,” writes the National Review’s Jim Geraghty. Investor’s Business Daily argues, “His qualifications are curiously perfect.” For his part, Romney appears to be coyly signaling that he would be happy to serve in the position:
FOX NEWS: We only have about a minute left, but I’m curious, Governor. I mean, it would almost seem like this would be a challenge you would enjoy. You’ve done the Olympics. You’re a business guy. You’re from Michigan. You’re from a car family. Wouldn’t car czar be a fascinating and interesting challenge for you?
ROMNEY: You know, my guess is that any one of the remarkable business leaders we have in this country would not pine for the job but would accept it out of a sense of obligation and duty.
The Romney endorsement is a minor step up from Fred Barnes’ nomination of Phil “mental recession” Gramm. During the presidential primary campaign, Romney said he’d be “ashamed” to tell the people of Michigan their jobs are coming back. “These people know that a lot of these jobs aren’t coming back,” he added. In a recent New York Times op-ed, Romney declared: “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.”
“There can’t be too many folks who would be better qualified to be ‘Car Czar’ than Mitt Romney,” writes the National Review’s Jim Geraghty.
Tell us again why the deranged opinion of Jim Geraghty should carry any weight?

IF BUSH WERE STILL PRESIDENT I’D BE WORRIED….BUT FORTUNATELY WE HAVE A BRAIN OF REASON IN THE WHITEHOUSE NOW.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:22 ameverytime i see mittens up, i always think of that south park episode about the mormons… dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb….
hilarious.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:22 am“You’re from a car family.”
And George is from a Bush family, and how awesomely has that worked out?
I hope Mitt brings back the Gremlin!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:23 amWhat exactly is Mitt doing in that photo?
Taking a Breathalyzer test?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:29 amMitt is from a car family (AMC went bankrupt)
W is from an oil family (every business he ran went bankrupt, including the USA)
McCain is from a military family (he crashed 5 planes and would have bankrupted the navy with his poor flying if he hadn’t gotten his dumbass captured by the commies)
Is this a pattern?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:30 amWhat exactly is Mitt doing in that photo?
Inflating airbags cartridges in his part-time.
GM really has hit rock-bottom.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:38 amNah, I was thinking — a bailout for playboy, and Mitt can be ‘hunk czar.’
December 12th, 2008 at 11:47 amWhy on earth would we be looking to put a republican as the czar over anything right now? They should not have any kind of leadership positions whatsoever.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:48 amCan you beat this for chutzpah?
GOP Senator Jim Bunning has been actively campaigning AGAINST any help for the Big 3, but will be in the Detroit area this weekend to sign autographs(for a fee!)
What hypocrasy! 1st, he tells Detroit to drop dead, then breezes into town to sell his autographs(he had once played for the Detroit Tigers).
December 12th, 2008 at 11:50 amIn a recent New York Times op-ed, Romney declared: “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.”
Which is exactly why the wingnuts want Mittens. Nothing would please them more than seeing Detroit, poor poor blue Detroit, fail and the unions permanently gone.
Saddleback Warren will be presenting Mittens with the first World Auto Medal of Excellence soon thereafter.
PEACE
December 12th, 2008 at 11:51 amBobwurst…
To be precise, McCain crashed 4 planes (one during training for his wings, two after he got his wings), the 4th ( an A-4) was destroyed on the deck of a carrier (possibly his fault or partly his fault–I think he did do a ‘wet-burn’ that caused the conflagration, but I’m not so sure the missile on the F4 behind him fired from being ‘cooked-off’, might have been accidentally set off by the pilot trying to get the hell out of his plane). His last crash didn’t appear to be his fault.
And that’s how he came to “know how to win wars” !

Wow that is so impressive that you get your
information from South Park.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:56 amDoes anyone else notice that this article is attributing quotes from John McCain as quotes for Mitt. The article was even nice enough to cite the source it was misquoting from. It says right in the article that McCain said he’d be “ashamed” to tell the people of Michigan their jobs are coming back. “These people know that a lot of these jobs aren’t coming back,”
I really wish people would make better attacks on Mitt instead of these flip-flop claims that prove to be false more times than not. There are better ways to attack Mitt if you want to.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:03 pmOn a serious note, when Dick Cheney of all people admits that letting Detroit fail would be disastrous, you know the obstructionist GOOPERS are to the right of Hitler.
Put all doubts to rest — declassify government information regarding extraterrestrial life and expose Shelby and other GOOPERS for who they are.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:04 pmThis is just to crazy for me and so typical of the neocon’s..What we needed was a bunch of police over seeing the financial market…Blessings

If you ever saw the episode to which he refers, you would agree with him. Mormonism was founded on a fraud.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:11 pmTP – democrat_for_life is right. The quote you attribute to Romney was actually McCain’s. You should really correct this.
If Mittens takes over as car czar, will he require Detroit to make cars with roof racks that are more comfortable for the family dog?
December 12th, 2008 at 12:16 pmMitty is exercising his “BJ Muscles” in anticipation of a sleep-over at Sen. McConnells house this week-end!
December 12th, 2008 at 12:39 pmRomney isn’t this stupid. If he became the car-czar, he’d own the problems of the car fallout. He wants to be president. This would about kill that idea.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:53 pmI wouldn’t hire Pretty Mitty to clean out my cat’s litterbox.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:56 pmThat’s one of those things you have to blow into to prove you’re not drunk so you can drive your car. How many DUI’s does he have?
dum dum dum dum dum
December 12th, 2008 at 1:04 pmI hate “Car Czar.” Can’t we call the post “Auto Crat?”
December 12th, 2008 at 1:16 pmNo, no, a thousand times no! Old man,old money, old car guy old thinking. Putting one well-coiffed a##hole in charge of lots of other a##holes only gives you a bigger pile of a@#holes. Blind leadning blind, cart before horse, thinking inside the box, etc. We have enough lumps of coal this season without adding another!
December 12th, 2008 at 1:42 pmI come from a “car family” too. My family owns a car.

How about “Kar King”?
Or “Duke of Detroit”?
Or “Motown Maven”?
Or “NASCAR Nanny”?
Or “Bush’s Poodle”?
I, too, hate the use of the term “czar” in America. It’s so Russian. Weren’t they supposed to be the evil ones? Then why would we want to be like them?
December 12th, 2008 at 1:55 pmWell at lease it’s a job where Mitt can steal as much as possible since he’s not busy. As for the voters of Michagin and Ohio who read his decision of letting them lose everything while he lied for votes well it would be something to see how they welcome him. The pay to play is always on the table and the GOP will use it up as well as some Democrats. Mitt will look for shares from the Auto Industry just like the White House is willing to give taxpayers money for Auto shares on the side. The secret of how DC works is pay to play even if the Media/Law Makers want to act like their shocked. Their only shocked it was spoken out loud.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:58 pmI could be a success at the job if I practiced what Mutt practices, farm it out to a third world country. Wait a minute, we will be a third world country, what am I thinking?
December 12th, 2008 at 2:37 pmMitt as the car czar.. lol. What a joke. That’s like given the clown President the Nobel Peace Prize.
December 12th, 2008 at 3:04 pm“Destroy America First” – Republicans.
December 12th, 2008 at 3:29 pmI absolutely detest Mittens. He spent a great deal of time and money in Iowa trying to win the Iowa Caucus. He lost handily and for good reason. He is the most unprincipled person in national politics. He will say anything and pay anything to get what he wants. He has no core values at all, it is all expediency and whatever he thinks you want to hear. His being in a position like “car czar” is an insult to all Americans.
December 12th, 2008 at 5:01 pmI sit here and read these comments and I must say that it never ceases to amaze me how much America is lacking in intelligence. First you use South Park as a reference to call out the LDS church as a fraud, then you refer to Mitt Romney as Mitty, Mittens, and Mutt. But, just like the tactics deployed by the left, you just choose to name call and use illegitimate shows to poke fun at very respectable people. It is, however, your freedom of speech to do this. I respect that you have that right. I do have some questions though. What is your solution to the Auto Industry crisis? Do you actually know what allowing chapter 11 bankruptcy means for these companies and the unions? Do you think it is in our best interest to allow these auto workers to continue to make $78 dollars an hour to manufacture these cars? Do you have any desire to have an intelligent discussion about this, or do you prefer to name call and insult by calling the LDS church a fraud with your freedom of speech? Let me know when you have developed your knowledge of the subject and I am willing to debate the issue.
December 13th, 2008 at 5:06 pmGet a clue GOP, spin all you want. You lost, your suggestions rang hollow before the election; now you only sound foolish.
December 14th, 2008 at 10:54 pm“The base salary of a U.S. senator is $169,300 a year or $3,255 a week”.
I am incensed since I learned that our Congress gets paid for the remainder of their lives! Can you really envision the effect that burden falling on the taxpayers? Can this be real, one two-year or a six-year term entitles the job holder to a lifetime of pay and benefits. Obama has stated that he will review the various portions of our government that are not working, and this surely is not working. Legislation is needed to rein these absurd payment in, or make the payments conditioned on holding a regular govt. agency job after leaving office after less than 20 years. Wake up people. These are JOB holders, not ruling elite.
