Republican senators blocked a $15 billion bailout to General Motors and Chrysler late last night, after insisting that autoworkers accept “steep cuts in pay and benefits” next year. Reacting to the news, “[s]tocks tumbled around the world and the dollar slumped…threatening to deepen the global recession.”
At a closed-door GOP lunch Wednesday, Vice President Cheney reportedly warned that it will be “Herbert Hoover” time if an auto bailout failed to pass, according to a senator familiar with the remarks. “A Cheney spokeswoman would neither confirm nor deny the vice president’s remarks.”
General Motors is hiring bankruptcy counsel “to prepare for a filing if Congress does not authorize $14 billion in emergency federal loans.” GM and Chrysler’s “only chance of survival” might hinge on the possibility that funds may be tapped from the $700 billion Wall Street bailout package.
The Swedish government is preparing a $3.5 billion bailout for Saab and Volvo. The plan consists of credit guarantees and rescue loans. “The government plan will now be presented to parliament for approval.”
Controversial NASA Administrator Michael Griffin is denying reports that he is muzzling employees from speaking openly and honestly with President-elect Obama’s agency review team. “This report, largely supported by anonymous sources and hearsay, is simply wrong,” Griffin wrote in an e-mail to NASA employees.
Yesterday, the Bush administration finalized rules that will accelerate drilling projects and power plant construction. The Interior Department eliminated “35-year-old regulations in the Endangered Species Act that required an independent scientific review of proposed federal projects to determine whether they imperil protected plants and animals.”
The Bush administration issued new rules yesterday for the H-2A guest worker program that “it said would lessen the bureaucratic burden on employers seeking to hire foreign farm workers.” Critics of the rule change argued that that changes would “depress wages and working conditions.”

Senate Republicans, including Sens. Arlen Specter (R-PA), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), and Jon Kyl (R-AZ), are trying delay confirmation hearings for Eric Holder. Yesterday on the Senate floor, Grassley said, “Public reports have just emerged that in 2004, the Governor of Illinois hired or sought to hire Mr. Holder.”
President-elect Obama plans to include billions of dollars of health care spending in his stimulus proposal, aiming to expand the State Children’s Health Program and extend COBRA benefits, among other provisions. Obama explained yesterday that the health care crisis “is part of the [economic] emergency” and thus demands immediate attention.
And finally: John McCain does his Blagojevich impersonation. McCain opened his Letterman appearance last night by joking: “I don’t want to talk about the BLEEPING campaign, understand? [Laughter] If you think I’m gonna go back to that BLEEPING situation, then – then BLEEP you.”

Well, I’d bet that at sometime in the past that Grassley has been in the Senate’s Men’s Room, alone, with Larry Craig. Would you care to explain that, Senator Crassley?
December 12th, 2008 at 9:09 amPublic reports show unequivocally that Specter, Grassley and Kyl endorsed Alberto Gonzales for AG.
Perhaps they “don’t recall” this.

Somebody needs to get Dick out of his bunker once in awhile so he can take a look at the real world. It’s been “Herbert Hoover” time in this country for awhile now.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:21 amGrassley said, “Public reports have just emerged that in 2004, the Governor of Illinois hired or sought to hire Mr. Holder.”
Well, if the reports can’t tell if the Governor actually hired or only sought to hire Mr. Holder, then perhaps those “public reports” are highly suspect. And I suspect that they consist of Specter, Kyle, and Grassley standing on a sidewalk somewhere (thus, “public”) telling each other this alleged news (thus, “reports”).
December 12th, 2008 at 9:25 amRepublican senators blocked a $15 billion bailout
And how did they block it? By threatening to filibuster. And Harry Reid, once again, caved without demanding that they actually filibuster, forcing the Republicans to go on record
December 12th, 2008 at 9:26 amoops.
Go on record opposing the deal. Voters need to know which Senators helped push us into a Depression so they will know how to vote in 2010.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:27 amYesterday, the Bush administration finalized rules that will accelerate drilling projects and power plant construction.
Whatever method Bush is using to gut this country needs to be taken away from the President. Why do we even have the legislature branch of government if the President can so easily make laws himself. And then why have the legislature when the Feds can take our tax dollars and give it to companies without having to have Congressional approval.
I fear that our government is hopelessly broken.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:30 amJust heard on CNN that the White House is considering using part of the TARP money to bailout the Auto industry.
On that note, why hasn’t there been the same scrutiny on $700 billion as there is on $15 billion?
Sounds penny wise and dollar foolish to me.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:31 amThe Bush administration issued new rules yesterday for the H-2A guest worker program that “it said would lessen the bureaucratic burden on employers seeking to hire foreign farm workers.”
GD it! This program is already abused and now he is removing all restrictions on it. So, the Bush Crime family has successfully outsourced our good jobs to India and now we have “insourced” the remainder of our good jobs. Congress needs to immediately pass a law to override this. I think they should do away with the H1 visas altogether, especially in this time of high white collar unemployment.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:34 amObama explained yesterday that the health care crisis “is part of the [economic] emergency” and thus demands immediate attention.
____________________________________________________________
Obama is correct. Not only that, the idea isn’t even new. When Clinton took office back in 1993, he wanted to reform welfare, but said welfare reform would be a waste of time if the health care system wasn’t fixed first.
Think of how many personal bankruptcies are caused by health care costs.
Think of how many more people are left vulnerable to crippling medical bills each year as more and more people are uninsured and more employers have to cut back benefits.
Think of how the spending power of citizens is dramatically weakened because of medical bills and/or prescription costs.
Think of how many people are forced to stay in bad marriages or in bad jobs purely for health insurance.
Think of how many businesses have to charge more for their products and services because of the cost of health care benefits for their employees.
Think of these businesses getting less revenue and having to lay off workers — leaving them poor AND uninsured.
Think of how much of the machine driving this vicious circle is health care costs — at every phase of the cycle.
Fix our health care delivery system, and the rest of the problems will become easier to solve. Obama has his priorities right on this one.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:36 am“Public reports have just emerged that in 2004, the Governor of Illinois hired or sought to hire Mr. Holder.”
And this is grounds for holding up his confirmation. How much further can the Republicans take this “guilt by association” or “possible association”. As far as I know, Blago was not under investigation for anything in 2004.
I think that Obama needs to talk to the nation about all this Republican obstructionism that is going on. He needs to remind us that the Democrats didn’t block Ashcroft, Gonzales or Mukasy even though they had problems with all three.

While the carmaker and other companies were enjoying minimal levels of corporate taxation, the state’s schools were falling into greater disrepair and educational achievement was worsening. Funds for other government services such as highway maintenance and public safety were also in short supply, leading to tax increases for families. “The foreign companies that come in here don’t care that the schools are terrible,” one philanthropist told a reporter. “They just want the cheap labor. The Global Warming Religion is based on a theory that has yet to be proven. Which makes your ecstatic and emotional crusade a complete laughable joke.
December 12th, 2008 at 10:13 amRepublicans are childish and selfish. When they want something passed, they cry and stamp their feet if they can’t get “an up-or-down vote”. But when they oppose something, they use every procedural tool they have (including “anonymous holds”) to stop a final “up-or-down” vote from ever happening. In other words, they only want things voted on that they support in the first place. They don’t believe in “Majority Rules” when they know they will lose.
Compare this behavior to the days when they controlled both Houses of Congress. When Members were being chosen to participate in the negotiations over the final version of a bill (the Conference Report), the Republicans wouldn’t even let Democrats sit in on the meetings. The final versions of many things passed under their tyrannical rule had no Democratic input, and Democratic amendments that had overwhelming bi-partisan support were often stripped from the Conference Reports.
While there is blame to go around on both sides of the aisle, Republicans have been the most obstructionist and unfair. They rarely, if ever, act in the best interest of the average American. They almost always act in the best interests of Corporate America. If political campaign contributions from corporations ever get permanently banned (as well they should), Republicans would be hard pressed to raise money to run.

December 12th, 2008 at 10:51 amA scientific theory is proven when a predictable result is derived from the set of factors that make up the theory.
The theory can then be tested by adding other factors that may change the result in a predictable way, change the result in an unpredictable way or not change the result at all.
It the predicted result occurs the added factor is then included in the theory. If the result is changed then the theory must be changed to accommodate the previously unpredicted result and then tested again according to the new prediction derived from the new argument.
If the new predicted result does not occur then the new theory is unproven. If the result occurs as predicted then the new theory is proven.
A ‘lay’ “theory” is a proposition, argument, inquiry which awaits the proof of a predictable result or results.

For example, most of us believe the earth is round. Those of us who do have been convinced of that by something — even if we merely believe it to be true because someone we trust told us it was. Others of us require detailed scientific evidence. Still others need to circumnavigate the glove for themselves or fly off into space to look at the earth from a distance.
So my question to you is — what would you consider to be “proof” of global warming? What evidence would, if produced, convince you that global warming is real and a threat?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:06 amGM needs to file for bankrupcy and get rid of the unions. Average UAW salary 78,000, average salary of toyota workers 45,000, average American salary 25,000 Get rid of the unions and epa standards forcing the auto industry to spend billions for cars that americans will not buy
December 12th, 2008 at 11:08 amAdditionally, 73 percent believe in heaven, and 59 percent believe they devil exists.
And 100% believe in what they believe they know, believing they know enough to believe what it is they believe.
Here’s a simple test:
An atheist and a believer stand on the edge of a building 100 floors up.
It is the believer’s job to convince the atheist that there is in fact a God and a place in heaven for believers.
The atheist contends that some proof of God is needed in order to believe, just as for example there is proof that the sun rises in the east every morning and thus the atheist believes that the sun will always rise in the East every morning.
Now as to the existence of heaven, only death will prove that. As to the existence of God, God will have to do something that only God could do, and the atheist will have to observe the miracle.
So the test is that they both jump off the building to see what happens.
The atheist predicts that either they will both fall to their deaths the end, but if there is a God, God will save the believer from death whilst the atheist will die but having observed the miracle, will become a believer and will then die in the knowledge that the existence of heaven will also be proved.
So the believer has to jump first.

Sorry, jeff, but yer a stone idiot. They covered this in the NY TImes the other day. The story about union workers earning $70/hr is BS. Union wages add about $800 to cost of an AMerican made car. And foreign car makers have to deal w/ the same EPA standards that domestic car makers do.
Perhaps you’d prefer to live in a world where hardly anyone can afford to buy the cars Ford or GM make, and the air’s so dirty you can’t afford to breathe that either.
Stupid, jeff… just plain stupid.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:03 pmThanks for pointing out exactly what the obstructionist republicans have in mind……..I would add that your income figures are typically wrong also.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:05 pmWow, American are a bunch of stupid SOBs. I guess this is news? It’s moments like this when I wish we could let the Republicans have their own country and just watch it sink into the third world.

Repeat after me, “I’m a union-busting fascist.” Thanks for making yourself known only as a wrench in the machine of American politics, cracker. In your world, employees should work on the cheap and have no say while you comfortably live in mom’s basement.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:30 pmThe average auto worker makes $28/hour or about $60,000 a year. That is a good, solid, middle class job. The article at The New Republic estimates that workers at non-unionized plants make closer to $52,000 a year on average.
The $70/hour estimate comes from adding the cost of benefits and overhead on top of the wages. That estimate cannot be compared directly to the wages at a non-unionized car plant without also taking into account benefits and wages at that plant.
The Republicans who are touting these figures know that they are lying.

Hey troll, how does it feel to be on the way out of power?
I think it will be a very welcome introspective to most intuitive and non-fanatical democrats to judge how they view politics. with one of there’s pulling the trigger.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:38 pmYou fool, are you seriously so obtuse as to not be able to see that the trigger has already been pulled. It is now up so real Americans to staunch the bleeding before the patient dies.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:06 pmBernie Madoff charged with fraud for running a $50 billion ponzi scheme. The SEC and SIPC had no clue.
Bernie gets bail based on his signature. Welcome to Bush’s zero tolerance.
Another NY thief Marc Dreier bilked investors of $380 million yet he remains in jail.
Another nail in the coffin of investing.
