President Bush flew to Iraq last night for a surprise farewell visit highlighting the recent approval of the Iraq security agreement which guarantees U.S. withdrawal from Iraq by the end of 2011. The Associated Press writes that “in many ways this was a victory lap without a victory: Nearly 150,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq fighting a war that is remarkably unpopular in the United States and across the globe.” Despite the security agreement’s call for U.S. troops to withdraw from all Iraqi cities by Summer 2009, the top U.S. commander in Iraq said yesterday that some troops would stay past the deadline to “help support and train Iraqi forces.”
It’s vital that the people of the world realize we did not elect this man.
December 14th, 2008 at 10:39 amCould he just stay there?
December 14th, 2008 at 10:52 amOT:
Watching Press the Meat right now. The right-wing media has come unhinged. Any little rumor or insinuation – no matter how tenuous or obviously ridiculous – is treated as headline news and summarily subjected to the most intense scrutiny and faux concern.
They were doing better with the “secret Muslim” schtick.

See, that’s the problem with ‘democracy,’ votes, ballots and crap like that: We, the ‘people,’ the electorate ARE responsible for the ills done on our name by those whom we elevated to power.
December 14th, 2008 at 10:54 amOne last chance to sneak in and out (unannounced) of the mess he created. Bush’s “legacy” will be the death, destruction, and lies of Iraq. Nixon had Watergate, Clinton had Monica, and Bush has Iraq.
December 14th, 2008 at 10:56 amAbove the Clouds says: Nixon had Watergate, Clinton had Monica, and Bush has Iraq.
And only one of them is a lying murderer.
Wonder if he had to squeeze between some more pissed off soldiers for a photo op again.
December 14th, 2008 at 11:18 amHis farewell tour — the best thing he could do is slink away, particularly after the explosive report in the NYT today of the $1 billion lost in Iraq reconstruction.
‘Hard Lessons: The Iraq Reconstruction Experience,’ is circulating in Washington in draft form among a tight circle of technical reviewers, policy experts and senior officials.
December 14th, 2008 at 11:18 amshouldn’t he be home, working out the details of loaning OUR money to the auto industry and related workers? like TOMORROW.

EXACTLY–WHY THE HELL ISN’T HE HERE AT HOME TRYING TO FIX THE ULTIMATE MESS HE HAS MADE? A$$HOLE CAN’T WAIT TO BE OUT OF OFFICE AND WE CAN’T WAIT FOR THE DOOR TO HIT HIM IN THE A$$

Tell that to the victims of Operation Duckhook.
Or the thousands of Laotians who died in the secret bombing campaigns, while we were supposedly negotiating the terms of withdrawl with the North Vietnamese. Bush is a mountebank, but lets not throw historical perspective out the window, ok?
December 14th, 2008 at 11:39 amIf we had a president, he would indeed be home during this crisis working on a solution – but Bush is impotent, useless, unable to accomplish anything here or at home, so he takes this time to go to Iraq, ironically, where he has abandoned and betrayed those he ordered to serve.
December 14th, 2008 at 11:52 amRight now, the repugs in congress are working to derail any democratic plans for recovery in the country, while enabling themselves to look more favorable in the eyes of their contributors, and create a situation where it looks like Bush can sign, as lame duck, a financial remedy for the economy, It is a false front – a deceitful and damaging, concerted effort to serve themselves and provide Bush with a tiny role that would help to counter the enormous negativity that surrounds his presidency.
Bush and the repugnicans have practically destroyed America as we know it. We will be paying for the remedy for a long, long time.
Nanuary 20, 2009: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
December 14th, 2008 at 11:57 amOne last photo-op for Bush’s legacy.
sigh…..
December 14th, 2008 at 12:08 pmAnd I bet the people in Iraq were just thrilled to have him once again on their soil. It would serve Bush right if the insurgents captured him and then tortured him.

Above the Clouds says: Nixon had Watergate, Clinton had Monica, and Bush has Iraq.
And Bush has Iraq, the economy, the constitution, civil rights, personal freedoms, torture… The list is almost too long to even contemplate.
December 14th, 2008 at 12:15 pmi heard ed schultz opine the other day, wondering if bush told those plantation caucus senators that they could go ahead and vote against workers, that he would use the TARP money for the auto cos…
this morning, on abc roundtable, i heard (?) (not krugman) say that he thought cheney’s speech about becoming another HOOVER was a clear signal to those senators to vote against the bridge loan because bushco would not let them fail…
December 14th, 2008 at 12:17 pmBecause Congress has not accepted their job of investigating the abuses by the Bush administration, Bush is able to conduct this ‘victory lap’. Should they have done their jobs years ago we could have ameliorated the mess revealed by ‘Hard Lessons: The Iraq Reconstruction Experience’(and Bush not be celebrating in Iraq right now). Never again will the USA have any credibility when it comes to legal proceedings against the world’s war criminals.
December 14th, 2008 at 12:27 pmThe worthless lying election-stealing war criminal Bush-in-Fuhrer returns to the scene of one of his war crimes: Iraq, where he murdered over one million Iraqis. Their crime? Having vast supplies of oil beneath their countryside. Their failure: to have atomic weapons to protect themselves against US imperial aggression.
December 14th, 2008 at 12:43 pmWhy do these people always have to sneak in and sneak out?
And why is it always called a surprise visit like some kind of surprise birthday party?
Oh, I get it.

December 14th, 2008 at 1:04 pmI need to correct #7 — I think the figure that represents lost money in Iraq reconstruction is $100 billion.
December 14th, 2008 at 1:25 pmMore than likely Bush was there to also collect a ton of gold and a few thousand carats of choice diamonds, his reward for “tremendous leadership against evil”.
December 14th, 2008 at 4:04 pmIt’s a shame he had to step over the bodies of several hundred thousand people.
What, no plastic turkey this time?
December 14th, 2008 at 4:19 pmHow much to bribe the pilot to leave before Bush gets back to the plane ?
December 14th, 2008 at 7:58 pmHas anyone else be me noticed that the bill sign by Bush was the same one Obama side he would do if elected President. Now Bush can use this in his legacy as Americans really did pay attention. Look for more of Obama’s ideas to be used by Bush.
December 14th, 2008 at 8:37 pmLook at that FAT PIG Maliki!
He sure isn’t missing any meals!!!
