In September, an insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church — where Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has worshipped for about six years — promoted an upcoming Love Won Out conference that sought to “convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.” In an interview with Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren last night about suspected arson at the church, Palin defended the promotion of the event, claiming that “people looked at that and wanted to spin that into something that it was not“:
VAN SUSTEREN: Do you know about that at all, what that controversy was?
PALIN: Yes, I think there was an insert in the church’s bulletin one Sunday that had advertised a seminar that was being (INAUDIBLE) at another church in Anchorage, and it had to do with those who wanted some assistance or some kind of counseling in dealing with any struggles that they would have regarding homosexuality.
Asked if gay men and women were “welcome” at her church, Palin responded by using nearly the same language she used to describe Love Won Out’s efforts to “help” gay people. The church is “quite open in terms of welcoming people into the church and assisting anyone who desires assistance or counseling or help,” said Palin. Watch it:
Love Won Out denies that it aims to “cure” homosexuality, despite the fact that it claims “same-sex attractions can be overcome.” Additionally, the group’s website approvingly cites a paper on “Ex-Gays” that seeks to demonstrate “that it is possible for homosexuals to change their physical attractions.” The website also refers readers to a number of “ex-gay” organizations and websites.
As the New York Times notes, “most mainstream mental health professionals dismiss attempts to eradicate homosexual desires or to change someone’s sexual orientation as quackery that is potentially harmful.” Mental health experts say that the damage sexual reorientation therapy can “inflict on self-esteem, triggering depression and even suicide, is well documented.”
Palin has previously said that she believes homosexuality is a “choice.” But in reality, all major mainstream medical and mental health professional organizations have concluded otherwise.
Mental health experts say that the damage sexual reorientation therapy can “inflict on self-esteem, triggering depression and even Republicanism, is well documented.”

December 16th, 2008 at 9:39 pmPalin has previously said that she believes homosexuality is a “choice.” But in reality, all major mainstream medical and mental health professional organizations have concluded otherwise.
Well, she also believes Afghanistan is “our neighboring country”, and that the Alaska Air National Guard is our “first line of defense against Russsia”, which she can see from her front porch.
Sarah Palin isn’t a mental health professional, she just needs to see one professionally.
December 16th, 2008 at 9:43 pmDid you expect anything else from this rightwing religious nut? This is like hearing a crackhead say “I like to smoke crack!” Duh!
December 16th, 2008 at 9:46 pmAnd Obama will take SCIENCE into account! YEEEEEEAAAAAAAH
December 16th, 2008 at 9:48 pmWhy do these straight, holier-than-thou, Republicans know so much about “Unwanted Same Sex Attractions”?
December 16th, 2008 at 9:50 pmPalin has previously said that she believes homosexuality is a “choice.”
– - Hey, homosexuality is man’s choice. There’s been homosexuality in Alaska for almost 6,000 years, since the beginning of time.
December 16th, 2008 at 9:51 pm“The Bonobo, which has a matriarchal society (unusual amongst apes), is a fully bisexual species — both males and females engage in heterosexual and homosexual behavior, being noted for lesbianism in particular. About 60% of all sexual activity in this species is between two or more females. While the homosexual bonding system in Bonobos represent the highest frequency of homosexuality known in any species, homosexuality has been reported for all great apes (a group which includes humans), as well as a number of other primate species” – wikipedia
I love quoting irrefutable facts of science that completely disprove the “homosexuality is a choice” myth. Seriously. Consider the following logic: homosexuality occurs naturally in the animal kingdom. Humans are animals. Ergo, homosexuality occurs naturally in humans. Unless, of course, some religious nut claims humans aren’t animals. Then what are we, plants?
December 16th, 2008 at 9:57 pmWhy do we have to continue to hear or read about the utter nonsense of any subject from this absolute doofus? She is living proof that shit does rise to the top. Especially in American politics.
December 16th, 2008 at 9:57 pmHomosexuality is common amongst animals. We should have a debate between Sarah Palin and a homosexual chimpanzee about whether it is a choice. Whomever first starts flinging their feces at the other loses.
December 16th, 2008 at 9:59 pmPalin would say and do anything to keep attention on herself..Next she will be telling all the relegious reich winger’s her pastor and herself can cure all the earth’s ill’s..Blessings

December 16th, 2008 at 10:08 pmHey, it’s tough to do an interview with someone who is speaking in tongues and handling snakes.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:15 pmJust when I thought I had gone a day without seeing any news with the name of the PTA mom this comes up. There is something innately wrong with people who think that gays are not innately gay. They are either mentally challenged or just evil bigots.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:22 pmAs we have seen in many examples in the Republican party, those two conditions are not mutually exclusive.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:25 pmAs I understand it all you have to do to stop being gay is to register as a Republican.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:26 pmThat’s not true. But, to be a Republican, you have to stop admitting that you are gay.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:28 pmNo. There is no cure for stupid.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:31 pmWho cares about Sarah or what she says. She should be taking care for 2 kids and helping Bristol with her son Trig and the kid on the way. Keep an eye on Bristol’s delivery date because that tells the hold truth.

So as Muslims are our “allies’ according to your expert opinion it follows that Progressives approve of killing gays and keeping women entirely subservient to men?
You are a moron.
December 16th, 2008 at 10:54 pmYeah trajan, you can’t even afford a bow tie and you want to make folks think progressives want to silence christains.
Truth is we just want them to quit spouting political propaganda from their pulpits, it’s illegal for a reason.
here’s a link if anyone has a church they want to file a protest against.

OMG, that is hilarious.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:19 pmSK: By the way there have been Muslim on Gay attacks. so that’s not true.
So then, both American Christian fundamentalists and American Muslims fundamentalists have attacked and killed (?) gays because homosexuality doesn’t fit with their religious beliefs.
No one here is defending any Muslim violence against gays, and no one ever has. Progressives do not approve of any religiously motivated violence.
But thus far in America the majority of violence against gays has come from Christians. So that is the bigger problem for gays and for those who support gay rights.
But you’d rather the considerable extent and evidence of Christian violence against gays be regarded as equal to that which a tiny minority of a tiny minority of Muslims might engage in?
Here’s an idea. Why doesn’t GOD do something about it? What does HE hate more? Gays? or Muslims? Or Progressives? All three? I’m pretty sure all three, if the Bible is anything to go by. So why don’t you go and barbecue a goat to God ( remember HE doesn’t like veggies, only meat) and ask HIM to take care of this awful threat to Christianity?
December 16th, 2008 at 11:20 pmTrahan must have lost his “high paying job” — again.
December 16th, 2008 at 11:23 pm40 years ago when I was a teenager, everyone was under the impression that being gay was a conscious decision and it seemed so. But now the people that have told us that eggs, coffee, wine and other foods are bad for us, no; good for us, no; bad for us – I don’t know where it is now, have decided that homosexuality is natural, no it isn’t, yes it is. And if I don’t agree than I am not politically correct. Why can’t I look at the information and make up my own mind. Frankly, I don’t care what it is. Some homosexuals are good people and some are not. Seems most people on the list disagree with Sara and bash her unmercifully, because she is not politically correct. Reminds me of the Smothers Brothers who used to have so many controversial skits and people hated them. I thought they were the funniest guys you could imagine. I think Sarah is a genuine straight from the heart person. I don’t think she knows what you want or expect to hear. Unlike Hillary or the new president Obama who I think are elitist Ivy League better than thou lawyers and they sound similar to many of our posters here. We’re going headlong into an era of genetic modeling of our children and we’ll be able to order them up with the looks and intelligence that we think they should have. Until then, let’s give space to our fellow Americans to have good discourse no matter how different it is from our beliefs. I guess that is what makes me a Libertarian.

And, of course, the regular commenters COMPLETELY FAIL to mention MUSLIMS, either!!! Ergo everyone here is in league with GAY-KILLING MUSLIMS!
SK is just on a jag about Christian-bashing. GOD apparently can’t stick up for HIMself. And Palin is the new Virgin Mary of course, only with 5 kids.

Look, gays have no more control over who they’re sexually attracted to than you do. Can you imagine changing your mind to become gay? I can’t. Here’s how to find out whether it’s a conscious decision: ask the people who are gay. They say it isn’t, so that’s how we know.
They don’t like Sarah Palin because she wants to take away their rights and make them second class citizens. Not because she’s “authentic,” but because she’s mean to them. That’s a valid reason not to like someone, or at least not to want them to have lots of political power.

And you know, call me old fashioned, but I always thought that someone who had to choose which gender they found more attractive was known as “bisexual”

Calling for Sharia Law, yes, but calling for the killing of gays? Every single Friday night? I do not believe you. I think you’re making this up because you are amazingly anti-Islam.
Speaking for myself (and no other progressives), I am atheist and I object to anyone telling me that I have to obey the “Word of God”. I do not support Islam any more than I support Christianity or Judaism or even any of the polytheistic religions, which are just as valid (or invalid) as the monotheistic ones.
It takes a certain amount of self-delusion to truly believe the religious myths as being facts, and that “The Bible” is the “literal Word of God”. I don’t think myself capable of that degree of self-delusion. I would need someone to tell me which version of the Bible is the Word of God and which ones are the output of fakers. None of you can.
BTW, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, the reason you get attacked so much is because you’re an idiot. Your comments display a level of ignorance unmatched by some of the other right-wing nutjobs who enjoy swooping in here and taking a dump. You’re a bigot, and you don’t know what you’re talking about. Just trying to help.

December 17th, 2008 at 7:09 amRep. Eshoo to push for Fairness Doctrine
Congresswoman Anna Eshoo D-Palo Alto, said Monday she will work to restore the Fairness Doctrine and have it apply to cable and satellite programming as well as radio and TV.
“I’ll work on bringing it back. I still believe in it,” Eshoo told the Daily Post in Palo Alto.
The Fairness Doctrine required TV and radio stations to balance opposing points of view. It meant that those who disagreed with the political slant of a commentator were entitled to free air time to give contrasting points of view, usually in the same time slot as the original broadcast.
The doctrine was repealed by the Reagan administration’s Federal Communications Commission in 1987, and a year later, Rush Limbaugh’s show went national, ushering in a new form of AM radio.
Conservative talk show hosts fear the doctrine will result in their programs being canceled because stations don’t want to offer large amounts of air time to opponents whose response programs probably wouldn’t get good ratings.
Eshoo said she would recommend the doctrine be applied not only to radio and TV broadcasts, but also to cable and satellite services.
“It should and will affect everyone,” she said.
She called the present system “unfair,” and said “there should be equal time for the spoken word.”
We should e-mail support to Rep. Eshoo, since she’s going to be getting flamed non-stop for this, and probably threatened with physical harm, knowing republicans.
December 17th, 2008 at 7:27 amFrom Raw Story:
Students to be taught there’s no God
VICTORIAN state primary school students will soon be able to take religious education classes which teach there is no evidence God exists.
The Humanist Society of Victoria has developed a curriculum for primary pupils that the state government accreditation body says it intends to approve, The Sunday Age newspaper reported.
Accredited volunteers will be able to teach their philosophy in the class time allotted for religious instruction, the newspaper said.
As with lessons delivered by faith groups, parents will be able to request that their children do not participate.
“Atheistical parents will be pleased to hear that humanistic courses of ethics will soon be available in some state schools,” Victorian Humanist Society president Stephen Stuart said.
The society does not consider itself to be a religious organisation and believes ethics have “no necessary connection with religion”.
Humanists believe people are responsible for their own destiny and reject the notion of a supernatural force or God.

These people are able to suspend reality and “pick and chose” the verses of the Bible to which they adhere, ignoring entire tracts and books that don’t support their ideology. Because these same people offer no support for the reasons for the verses they support and those they ignore, it can only be assumed that it is their prejudices which drive their “pick and chose” mentality towards the Bible.

These numbers are to support the assertion that the officially godless – atheists – communists are the leaders in death due to ideology. The ideology is not atheism, but communism, which is officially atheist.

STATISTICS OF DEMOCIDE:
II 128,168,000 VICTIMS: THE DEKA-MEGAMURDERERS
4. 61,911,000 Murdered: The Soviet Gulag State
5. 35,236,000 Murdered: The Communist Chinese Ant Hill
6. 20,946,000 Murdered: The Nazi Genocide State
7. 10,214,000 Murdered: The Depraved Nationalist Regime
http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/NOTE5.HTM
IMPORTANT NOTE: Among all the democide estimates appearing on in this book, some have been revised upward. I have changed that for Mao’s famine, 1958-1962, from zero to 38,000,000. And thus I have had to change the overall democide for the PRC (1928-1987) from 38,702,000 to 76,702,000. Details here.
I have changed my estimate for colonial democide from 870,000 to an additional 50,000,000. Details here.
Thus, the new world total: old total 1900-1999 = 174,000,000. New World total = 174,000,000 + 38,000,000 (new for China) + 50,000 (new for Colonies) = 262,000,000.
Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5′, then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century. Finally, given popular estimates of the dead in a major nuclear war, this total democide is as though such a war did occur, but with its dead spread over a century.

Ever notice that when Bitbit mentions “ex-gays” or people who “claim” to have changed their sexual orientation, that not one single time has Bitbit ever made mention to a number in regards to Bitbit’s claims?
Makes one wonder if Bitbit just doesn’t have numbers to back up the claims made by Bitbit in relation to people who “claim” to have changed their sexual orientation.
One would assume that anti-gay groups, such as NARTH & Exodus, would be more than willing to state the number of people who’ve “succeeded” in their “programs”. Unless, of course, that these programs are not quite as successful as these groups proclaim.

December 17th, 2008 at 2:11 pm>Here are some numbers.
Where is the part where you contrast these numbers you quote with numbers of people killed in the name of religion?
You have any numbers for those? And what about all the people killed by disease and overpopulation because there is a concerted refusal of religious entities to refuse to discuss birth control with them? Have any number for those, baconbit?
December 17th, 2008 at 2:13 pmGood ol’ bitty-brain. The problem, with bitty-brain, is that the despots and tyrants he mentions are not motivated by religion. They are motivated by the lust for POWER.
Now, if one wishes to compare apples to apples, one must look at individuals. You know? David Koresh(sp?), Jim Jones, clinic bombers, witch hunters, and various fundamentalist terrorists. Not to mention the twisted psychos from the Westboro Baptist Church.
And, if one wishes to examine religiously motivated genocide, one would be remiss in excluding the virtual extinction of Native Americans who refused to convert to Christianity. Also, by bitty-brain’s “logic”, one would need to blame several plague pandemics on the Crusades.
December 17th, 2008 at 2:23 pmSorry homsexuality is a choice. So is beastiality hetrosexuality and abstinance. Then how can some not
December 17th, 2008 at 2:28 pmare they non-sexuals. The attraction may have some physical basis but so does my attraction to any hot female.
Does that mean I can have sex with all hot females.
There are boundaries for a reason. In the Bible they
are clear. Why be a Christian if you do not believe
they should be followed?
What were you trying to say?

Sorry. Christianity is a choice. So are Islam, Judaism, and other religions. As such, why should they receive protection under the law?

December 17th, 2008 at 2:41 pmMight you be so kind as to point me to the evidences you examined which led you to the choice hypothesis and how do think these evidences were so overlooked by the AAP, APA, and AMA?
Thanks-
Anyone else notice that one of the links is to an article that supports the x-gay movement?
