Politico’s Ben Smith reports that the RNC is staffing up for a new, in-house think tank designed to revive the party’s “policy heft.” The think tank will be named the Center for Republican Renewal, and it is the result of many inside the conservative movement viewing the 2008 electoral failures as “in part, a product of stale ideas.” Campaigning for a second term, RNC Chairman Mike Duncan said that the think tank is part of his “10-point plan” to make the GOP “an accelerator of change.”
barf!
December 17th, 2008 at 9:57 amThe problem with the republican think tank is that they view them not as nouns, but as cause-and-effect. Whatever they put their thinking process to….tanks.
or…
It’s their all-purpose foreign policy solution: Think ‘TANK.’

December 17th, 2008 at 9:59 amSuggestions for Republicans:
Stop lying
Stop trying to appeal to morons
Stop creating limited interest wedge issues
Stop using religion as a crutch for your policies
Basically. stop being Republicans
December 17th, 2008 at 10:00 amThe goopers may want to think of themselves as an “accelerator for change,” but their transmission for change is stuck in reverse…
December 17th, 2008 at 10:02 amPresident Bush is planning to launch an institute attached to his presidential library that will promote his vision.
In fact. President Dinkledonk’s vision is the same as Mr. Magoo’s.

December 17th, 2008 at 10:07 amMaybe they could start calling themselves Federalists again.
December 17th, 2008 at 10:12 ami believe that troll tim vacalukalik

December 17th, 2008 at 10:13 amProblem 1: It sounds like they are just looking for policies that will get them back in power as opposed to one’s they actually care about… I can picture them all now, just sitting around asking eachother what they should be caring about… which is certainly understandable because they are only capable of caring about themselves and their wealth.
Maybe they could stick to opposing things like the Wall St. bailout. Although I’m certainly not their target audience, I actually agreed with them on something for once.
December 17th, 2008 at 10:18 am“…a new, in-house think tank designed to revive the party’s “policy heft.”
Due to an editing error the above phrase should have read:
December 17th, 2008 at 10:18 am“policy of theft”
George Bush has a vision?
December 17th, 2008 at 10:25 amThere are NO moderate or liberal Rethugs. They all have been hounded out of the GOP as Rinos by the extremist fanatics.
In fact, the base believes they got whumped in the last election because they weren’t radical enough, and must become even MORE extremist.
December 17th, 2008 at 10:26 amPlease, please, please GOOPers give Mike Duncan a second term at the RNC. Please keep advocating the economic policies of the Hoover administration, the foreign policy of Napoleon and the social platform of the Spanish Inquisition from now until the end of time. I know there are some nutty people in this country and I want them all where I can see them. Your party will do fine.
December 17th, 2008 at 10:29 amright-wing think tank is the definition of oxymoron
December 17th, 2008 at 10:32 amshoeless Says: “Maybe they could start calling themselves Federalists again.”
No, I think they should re-brand themselves with a made-up meaningless but warm and fuzzy sounding name, like “Altria” until they can sort out their platform.
December 17th, 2008 at 10:42 amThen they can invent a new name which of course what actually mean what every thinks it should mean.
“…Renewal”
At least they’re showing signs of self-awareness.
December 17th, 2008 at 10:55 amConservatism by definition doesn’t have new ideas. Conservatism in practice doesn’t have ideas at all. All they’re going to do is try to whip up a new flavor of sugarcoating to put on the same steaming pile of old “ideas.”
December 17th, 2008 at 10:56 amThey want to eliminate the SEC and lower corporate taxes to zero. Whose pocket are they in?
A new stink tank is a great way to get sponsors. Pony up Sheldon Adelson, after Bush steers more taxpayer money his way.
December 17th, 2008 at 11:02 amElBruce Says: Conservatism by definition doesn’t have new ideas
Quite so. Their frame of reference is a nostalgic and unrealistic view of the past. Their problem now is that they have run out of glorious pasts to point-to as “the way things should be.” They can;t get past the supposed perfection of the “Leave it to Beaver” 50s because they’ve been complaining about every other decade after that and they have failed in every attempt to prevent change.
December 17th, 2008 at 11:14 amPromote his vision? How exactly does one promote astigmatism?
December 17th, 2008 at 11:26 amHe has a vision?
December 17th, 2008 at 11:26 amWell, it took the country 50 years to forget how much they hated the Federalists, so they could come back as Republicans. How long do you think it will take for the country to forget how badly the Republicans suck?
December 17th, 2008 at 11:38 amSo that’s what Karl Rove did at the White House Hanukkah party. How many of those in attendance did he hit up for the new policy stink tank? Hopefully, they didn’t invest with Bernie Madoff and have something left to share.

December 17th, 2008 at 11:45 amWOW! All these Think Tanks from the party that runs on a lack of thought
The Rovian campaigns I’ve seen have been to fear monger and get knee jerk reactions.

December 17th, 2008 at 11:53 amRepublican Renewal? Don’t look now, but that dead horse you’re whipping just exploded with maggots.
December 17th, 2008 at 12:11 pmRepublican Renewal? Orwell would be proud.
December 17th, 2008 at 12:15 pmalready said by Elbruce in 18… but i wanted to elaborate.
What change could conservatives propose, wouldn’t that make them in essence no longer conservative.
here’s the merriam-webster definition of conservative.
1: preservative
2 a: of or relating to a philosophy of conservatism bcapitalized : of or constituting a political party professing the principles of conservatism
3 a: tending or disposed to maintain existing views, conditions, or institutions : traditional b: marked by moderation or caution c: marked by or relating to traditional norms of taste, elegance, style, or manners
the key is in #3 “maintain existing views, conditions, or institutions.
there must be some serious thinking on how we can change and stay the same, i’m glad republicans are spending there efforts on that catch 22 instead of issues or serving the people… did i say people? i meant big business
December 17th, 2008 at 12:40 pmNot “stale” ideas, FAILED ideas. There, fixed.
December 17th, 2008 at 1:22 pm” named the Center for Republican Renewal “.?
What happened to all those snapping conservative names that claim they are the chosen ones?
Like instead naming this;
” Republican reinvention of American patriotism for the elite “.
December 17th, 2008 at 6:57 pmFind something you can make people scared of, blame it on someone/something you disagree with, lie cheat and steal wherever you can, and do whatever else it takes to claw your way back into power. You’ve already done that one, so what’d next?
