Former detainee: Gitmo is the ‘worst place in the world.’

This week, a judge ordered the release of three Guantanamo detainees, the first to be released as a result of a U.S. court ruling, because the government failed to prove they were “enemy combatants.” One detainee had particularly strong feelings about being held for seven years without charge at Guantanamo:

“For almost seven years, I was at the end of the world, at the worst place in the world,” Mustafa Ait Idir told the Dnevni Avaz a day after arriving back in his adopted homeland of Bosnia. “It would have been hard even if I had done something wrong (but) it is much harder if one is totally innocent,” he said.

Vice President Cheney said this week that Guantanamo was “well-run” and detainees were “well-treated.”

the conditions of which were created and heralded by the worst “humans” in the world.

  2. DNFP says:

    Sheesh.

So the Neocon’s change the semantics Their not POW’s, but enemy combatants.

Is this because we’re not technically at war?

And now they can’t even keep em locked up because they can’t prove they’re EC’s?

    John Kerry.
I knew you couldn’t resist this one. To be quite honest, I don’t really feel like cooking so how about just a beer or a glass of red? I think I have a chunk of smoked salmon and a half a jar of marinated artichoke hearts…

Of course in the real world, Dick(head) Cheney is simply a corrupt, morally bankrupt, lying sack of shit!

  9. Jackie says:

Right now Americans really don’t care what the detainees have to say about being held for 7 years without charges even knowing they are innocent and being tortured/raped and other killed at Gitmo. But becarefull because the same thing can be done to Americans by other countries and terrorist while the Bush Policy will be used to support the conduct. It’s so easy to hurt other but turn around is fair game. What Bush/Cheney have done will be done to Americans and even Obama/Biden couldn’t justify stopping it. You get what you give out in the end.

  10. dbadass says:

Can anyone interested in discussing John Kerry’s ideas please welcome him. He seems a little shy and I think we might all enjoy the sharing of ideas which might ensue should John feel a little more safe here. I mean that John. I really do…

This is the new America – this is what these criminals have done to us. And that doesn’t even take in to account what they have done to others. Such shame upon us and all our houses. We will pay, we are paying. Pay attention America, fascism came to us wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross, please pay attention.

And if that’s the case, Dick, you and your BFF George should have no problem spending the next seven years hangin’ in that fab Caribbean resort spot! Look for Blackwater to provide the room service and security for ya – I hear they’ll soon be looking for new work.

History will remember this administration, but not in the way they might want.

    PEACE

If it was well run and detainees were well treated, why didn’t Cheney allow the UN Human Rights Commission to conduct a review of the facility?

God, it’s unimageable to think that chimpy can snatch anyone from their homes and can hold/tortured them without cause.

The man should be fully compensated and an formal apology is in order.

  21. Jackie says:

Those innocent men/woman/childrend we held in Gitmo and other prisoner can’t tell their story their dead.

I think there wil be a “worst place in the world” waiting for that piece of scum Cheney and Bush when they meet their makers. They have done nothing but disaster for all of us and we should make sure they both face the same fate as saddam.

This was posted by someone else on an earlier thread and I thank them for it.

The American people should be outraged. Why they are not is anybodies guess.

  24. CageyCretin says:

Gitmo: a symbol of PRECISELY the OPPOSITE of EVERYTHING that America stands for. Thanks to the republicans (just the new neo-nazis) Gitmo NOW represents everything that America is RECOGNIZED as being.

I thought that they claimed that the prisoners there were fed some of the best food in the world. Steak and lobster every day. And given that that were true, isn’t that good enough? Wouldn’t YOU want to live there, I mean be imprisoned there for the rest of your life with great free food, and friends who ‘talk’ to you regularly and really want to hear what you have to say? And the free swimming lessons, and the weight training (re: shackles and chains)? I mean, this is serious club materinl. Other prisoners in the world should be so lucky as these people, guilty or innocent. We house them and feed them and talk to them and they are SO ingrateful for all these benefits we have given them. They should want to stay there forever, shouldn’t they. Like some kind of superior welfare thing, right?

  25. MapleStreet says:

you have a choice. You can believe an honorable US Senator who says it is a vacation in paradise.

Or you can believe someone who has commited treason against the US and was so bad they had to be sent to Gitmo.

    Tracy__5 Says:

I can think of dozens of countries in which the prison conditions are ten times as bad. If this guy thinks that Gitmo was bad, comparitively speaking, he has obviously never been to prison in his home country for one.

    ____________

And why should an innocent man have been in a prison in his home country?

  27. ElBruce says:

If Cheney likes it so much, perhaps he should move there. In fact, that’s not a bad idea…

  28. EugeneDebs says:

JK I have one word for YOU. MORON. You are also a liar and a fool but MORON really says it all
