In an interview with the Washington Times yesterday, Vice President Dick Cheney asserted that Bush’s “place in history likely would grow during the next 20 to 30 years.” Arguing his case, Cheney cited President Ford’s decision — unpopular at the time — to pardon President Nixon:
“By the time of [Ford’s] passing a couple of years ago, opinion had totally turned on that,” Mr. Cheney said. “In fact, most people by then, even many who had been very critical 30 years before, were in agreement that in fact it was a good decision, it was the right thing to do from the standpoint of the country.
“I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road in light of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”
Of course, Cheney was also “personally persuaded” that violence in Iraq was in its “last throes,” that there was “no doubt” that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, and that Republicans were going to win election contests in 2006 and 2008.
Vice President Dick Cheney asserted that Bush’s “place in history likely would grow during the next 20 to 30 years.”
__________
So true. As historians rewrite the story of our country, Bush may indeed shift from being merely the worst President of the United States, to the last.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:53 amhe’s a real kreskin
that dick cheney.
^
December 18th, 2008 at 9:53 amCheney has been wrong so far on his predictions. This one keeps his average at 100%.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:54 amI think that in 30 years, the country will be grateful that the Bush Administration was so incompetent that it didn’t allow the cancer that it represented to metastasize.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:55 amHow much did Cheney, as Gerald Ford’s Chief of Staff, have to do with the decision to pardon Nixon?
December 18th, 2008 at 9:56 amRead my lips richard, you are irrelevant.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:57 amIf people have redeemed Bush in 30 years, I am coming back and slapping every single one of them…
December 18th, 2008 at 9:58 amI’m pretty sure Cheney meant is that people will be happier when Bush is dead.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:58 am“I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road in orange jumpsuits, pink underwear and shackles.” -Big Dick
December 18th, 2008 at 10:00 amThe blogosphere will make sure Bush’s true legacy is known — and remembered.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:02 amI’m pretty sick of these two going around patting themselves on the back, trying to preserve a “place in history.” They have their place in history and based on the resounding increases of Democratic seats throughout their tenure, I’d say that most people are disgusted by their so-called “accomplishments.”
December 18th, 2008 at 10:03 amAfter he’s dead?
Maybe.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:04 amI guess global warming will freeze hell over in 30 years.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:05 amI’d say the chances are better than you might think. Conservatives have spent years trying to rehab the images of their heroes. It worked better for Reagan than it did for, say, Nixon, but they’ve gotten a lot smarter at this game. The work “the Bush legacy project” is already in high gear, before he even leaves office.
Of course, that may work against them, too. It’s probably harder to make people like the guy when they can still remember what a tool he is.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:08 amBad news, Dick. IQ’s are going up.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:08 amBush will be popular in 30 years? Where?
December 18th, 2008 at 10:10 amIn the museum of dictatorial leaders?
In a study of failed presidents?
In clinical psychology books?
In history books as the worst president in America?
Or just in the Guinness Book of world records for most … fill in the blank….stupid, incompetent, ignorant, oafish, stubborn, uncurious, inarticulate, uncultured, uneducated, dangerous…
Cheney: Bush will be popular in 30 years.»
– - I’m sure Hooverites thought the same thing in 1930.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:11 amConveniently, the simple odds are against him being around in 30 years to be held accountable for his prediction.
Another case of restoring accountability to the WH ?:
December 18th, 2008 at 10:11 amSammy is right about both Nixon and Reagan. (They’ve managed to turn Reagan into a near-saint.)
The Left must counter these lies at every turn.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:12 amCheney is underestimating Barack Obama…
In 30 years when Bush can be compared to his predecessor (Clinton) and antecessor (Obama), Bush’s legacy will look even worse.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:13 amThe best thing that could happen to Bush’s reputation would be if he died within the next five years–though I’d prefer it if it occurred within the next 30 days…
December 18th, 2008 at 10:13 amThere is a large part of our population that consist of authoritarian daddy figure worshipers who will undoubtedly pass the lie that Bush at the very least “kept” us safe” to the next generation of conservative drones. Like Reagan, they will whitewash all of his and Cheney’s direct involvement in torture, wiretapping, and other various illegalities, just as Reagan’s gleeful endorsement of the slaughter in South America has been. You also see it in their attempts to restore the reputation of Joe McCarthy.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:21 amThey will paint Bush as the tough-guy cowboy he/they fantasized him to be, and blame his disastrous economic policies on democrats, just as they did for Reagan. Don’t be surprised to see young affiliates of Neocons reemerge from this administration, just as the current batch did from Nixon’s and Reagan’s. They will certainly be back. How strong they are when they reemerge depends on our ability to guard history from their revisionist and spin doctors
Chimpy will not be popular in 30 X 30 X 30 years.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:24 amIn 30 years Uncle Dick and George both should be squattin’ on the coals trying to avoid pitchforks.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:24 amOne quick question Dick:
How’d that ‘30 year rule’ work out for Hitler? Pol Pot? Mussolini?
December 18th, 2008 at 10:27 amLet’s not forget while Cheney extolls the virtues in pardoning Nixon that he was an adviser to Ford. He was keenly aware of the repercussions in the pardon. He learned from the few mistakes that Congress made at the time. One was allowing pardons to go through without trials and convictions occuring first. Following Nixon’s pardon, an angry Congress made attempts to reign in Presidential powers.
No one was more vocal in their opposition to these proposald than Dick Cheney. Later in the year Ford names Rumsfeld to replace Haig as Chief of Staff. Rumsfeld follows by bringing Cheney on as his Deputy. They then embark on a good old Washington power grab. Using the unexperienced President as a tool, they begin driving wedges between every opposing faction within the recovering White House. They pit Kissinger against Ford and are successful in hobbling any efforts from the lone WH liberal Rockefeller from influencing Ford. They then begin what has been IMHO the true downfall of our democracy by opening the WH to the neocon movement. Her’s a good read on the timeline and insight into Cheney’s longheld dreams of absolute power in DC:

December 18th, 2008 at 10:30 amHeh heh heh….. wishful thinking, Dick!
History will not be kind to you or your puppet George. In fact, in 30 years people will look back on Bush the way that we today look back on Nixon. Anything positive that Nixon did is largely forgotten. But we all remember Watergate and his many other lies.
Future Americans will look back on Bush’s time in office and wonder why exactly we didn’t impeach and oust him. Double that for Dick.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:32 amI am tired of this “kept us safe since 9/11″ guano. The best way to make sure a thief doesn’t break into your house is to put your belongings out on the lawn and available.
That’s exactly what the Smirking Simian did. He took our most valuable possessions, our men and women in the military and put them in Iraq where they are readily accessible to our enemies.
Why would a terrorist risk trying to attack us here when Bush made it so much easier for them?
I think Bush and Cheney deserve full and total support. I am think nylon, or a good strong hemp, and a four foot fall.

Where’s the Warren Commission when you need them?
December 18th, 2008 at 10:37 amBush will be popular in 30 years
So is Hitler in some quarters.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:41 amListen, in 30 years, I will be 72 years old. Unless I am unfortunate enough to have Alzheimer’s or other brain degenerate diseases, I will make damn well sure everyone around me remembers what a miserable fck Bush was.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:51 amOf his incompetence.
Of his illegal, immoral, and misleading decisions.
Of his failures.
Of his policies of torture.
Of how greatly our once proud nation suffered.
And I will remind everyone how our country rose above racism and bigotry, and chose Obama for president.
clearly dick doesn’t talk to anyone who doesn’t think like him. its the only way he can be so consistently out of touch.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:52 amA Patriot Acting Says: “They then begin what has been IMHO the true downfall of our democracy by opening the WH to the neocon movement.”
…34 years later…
Thank you for this post. Very important to remember the true history, and the long term plans Cheney, Rumsfeld, Poindexter and their ilk laid down.
December 18th, 2008 at 10:57 amFor Cheney to prognosticate 20 to 30 year timelines is indicative of further machinations in the works.
He and the oil companies and their bankers have plundered the American economy and its taxpayers for decades to come. They have squandered lives and resources and America’s standing as a world leader for the sake of their greed and desire to create a world corporate order.
Seriously, I need someone to explain to me how pardoning tricky dick could be viewed positively by anyone. Is Cheney just making this stuff up?
December 18th, 2008 at 10:57 amSo sad but true Uncle Ho:
Supermarket defends itself over Adolf Hitler cake
EASTON, Pa. – A supermarket is defending itself for refusing to a write out 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell’s name on his birthday cake. Deborah Campbell, 25, of nearby Hunterdon County, N.J., said she phoned in her order last week to the Greenwich ShopRite. When she told the bakery department she wanted her son’s name spelled out, she was told to talk to a supervisor, who denied the request.
Karen Meleta, a ShopRite spokeswoman, said the store denied similar requests from the Campbells the last two years, including a request for a swastika.
“We reserve the right not to print anything on the cake that we deem to be inappropriate,” Meleta said. “We considered this inappropriate.”
The Campbells ultimately got their cake decorated at a Wal-Mart in Pennsylvania, Deborah Campbell said Tuesday.

You are being way to generous. How about in the next 30 minutes?
Really Dick, where are these alleged “most people”? If Nixon had gone to trial we might have been rid of you a long time ago.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:07 amFor a presidency to be rehabilitated it has to have some accomplishment to build a legacy upon. Nixon, despite the inherent evil that brought his administration down, did have a resume that included establishment of the EPA, opening of relations with China and the beginning of detente with the USSR. Reagan, despite the war crimes in Latin America, an incoherent and destructive middle east policy, the beginning of cuts to the domestic safety net and inception of the deregulatory movement that has brought us to our present distress takes credit rightly or wrongly of the economic boom Paul Volker’s work at the Fed initiated and the fall of the Soviet bloc. Bush has none of this. Claiming that the terrorists failed to attack U.S. soil again after the attack that succeeded on your watch is misleading at best and worthless without any sign of progress in defeating the threst.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:10 amThe only way Cheney’s assertion about Bush could ever become true is if in the next 15-20 years our country takes an even bigger turn for the worse and becomes a true fascist country where the streets are lined with soldiers/police, city squares have statues honoring our first dictator Bush and the sides of buildings have posters of him image hanging from them.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:13 amIn light of what you’ve “been able to accomplish”?! And what exactly is it that you have accomplished Dick? To be specific, what GOOD things?
December 18th, 2008 at 11:16 amHe always has been and will forever remain popular with idiots.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:21 amIt’ll be sooner than 30 years, if the Pukes succeed in undermining Mr.O’s meager mandate and sabotaging his plans for ‘change.’ Blanche Lincoln indicated today the chore St. Barry’s gonna have just keeping recalcitrant DIMs in line.
GOPukes? Fuggedabotit…
(Jeb)Bush/Palin, ‘12…
you heard it here first…
December 18th, 2008 at 11:24 amPopular? Yeah, ok.
Bush and Cheney will be the new boogeymen hiding in the closets and under the beds of little children all over the world.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:24 amWhoop! Whoop! Whoop!
December 18th, 2008 at 11:24 amRevisionist History Alert!
Bush Legacy Team at Work!
Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!
Cheney:
“I will not be alive in 30 years, so you can call me ‘dead wrong’ 30 years from now”
December 18th, 2008 at 11:24 amDNFP; I saw that story a day or two ago. Sickos.(the parents, that is).
December 18th, 2008 at 11:28 amyou heard it here first…
December 18th, 2008 at 11:24 am

Really Dick, where are these alleged “most people”? If Nixon had gone to trial we might have been rid of you a long time ago.
We hear “most people” from Cheney and other members of the Arrogant Class all the time. It just means “the people I choose to hang out with and pay any attention to, not the filthy masses of Americans.”
December 18th, 2008 at 11:35 amHe mis-spoke…that’s “30 LIGHT YEARS”…and even that’s a lie.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:39 amYeah, and “deficits don’t matter”. Thanks, Dick.
December 18th, 2008 at 11:56 amHold your breath till that happens Dickhead
December 18th, 2008 at 12:13 pm@DNFP #37
Let’s hope that Mrs Campbell doesn’t need medical attention that a well-meaning medical aide refuses to give on personal grounds..
So, Cheney is equating Ford’s pardon of Nixon with the Bush Regime’s incompetence and general disregard for truth, civility, etc? WTF?
Speaking of Nixon, ‘Dick Cheney before he dicks you.’
December 18th, 2008 at 12:23 pmIn light of what they’ve been able to accomplish? That would be nothing. How is having been able to accomplish nothing going to make them look good?
December 18th, 2008 at 12:27 pmIf you consider mounting legal problems “growth,” then his place in history probably will grow over the next twenty or thirty years.
December 18th, 2008 at 12:54 pmBush will become a lot more popular with me at noon on January 20th.
December 18th, 2008 at 12:58 pmPresident Ford is a traitor. His actions in pardoning Nixon set us up for the travesty of the Bush administration. It gave the impression that crimes no matter how large would not be prosecuted. Unfortunately, Obama is likely to follow after Ford and pardon, or at least decline to prosecute, the crimes of the Bush administration.
However, in this metaphor I think Bush is more akin to Nixon than to Ford.
December 18th, 2008 at 1:30 pmMy advice to everyone is to tune this tripe out!
They’re walking out the door – they can’t do anything of substance anymore so they’re just trying to rile us up.
Bushco will be very popular in 30 years – when they’re all dead and in Hell.
December 18th, 2008 at 1:34 pmYou do realize Bush and Cheney are very popular right now in the present.
*Popular with 18 percent of America that adore their every move Limbaugh speaks to them of.
*Popular with the 72% that desire him to leave office now instead of waiting to Jan 20.
*Bush is popular with shoe throwers.
*While Cheney is popular with his Attorney he shot in the face (still).
*No doubt both will be very popular with everyone that was tortured and imprisoned in general round ups anad had nothing to do with terrorism.
*Their entire Adm is popular in New Orleans and will be for at least 30 years to come.
*Extremely popular in America on the domestic economy front.
*Bush will be so very popular and in great demand for speaking events after he leaves office. Every university will be using him to promote, ” get an education or end up like Bush”.
December 18th, 2008 at 2:18 pmSure Bush/Cheney years will be looked upon favorably in 30 years, just as favorably as the Hoover years.
December 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pmBush will be a popular JOKE in 30 years. Then people will be saying when you REALLY screw the pooch that it looks like you realy Bushed that one. The name Bush will irrevocably be linked with total disasters. That is the ONLY way Bush will be popular.
December 18th, 2008 at 5:43 pmOkay everyone, let’s be EXTREMELY cautious between now and the year 2038. Sometime between then and now we’re all obviously going to receive the major concussion that will cause us to have this opinion of Bush.
December 18th, 2008 at 9:55 pmWho are these people who think that Ford was right to pardon Nixon? The respect that people had for Ford at his passing had more to do with his being the last Republican president before “Republican” became synonymous with “far right.”
December 18th, 2008 at 11:45 pmIn other words? the ‘dick’ is sure that the re-write of these days will be completed and only all the changes of the facts and events will be around. So, those 30 year later historians will have a parade of totally bogus crap to review, on what else can they base their opinion?
george W and company in 30 years will look every bit like the ‘hero’ Mathews thought he saw on that glowing day of “Mission Accomplished”.
December 20th, 2008 at 3:33 pmThe pResidential lies did not start with george W. it may have had its roots in the ‘Gulf of Tonkin’ lies which got us into a needless and equally bogus war in Nam. Or perhaps it started with the lies related to the investigation of the assassination of RFK?
December 20th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
