Perino Confused About Environmentalists’ Objections To Drilling On Federal Lands

Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is auctioning off resource rights to over 110,000 acres of public lands in Utah to oil and gas producers. The lands include parcels near Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, Dinosaur National Monument, and Nine Mile Canyon, which is home to “the highest concentration of Native American rock art in the United States.”

Yesterday, Robert Redford spoke out against the sale. He noted the lands’ significant historical value and criticized the Bush administration for its “deception” and “sleight of hand” in rushing to hold today’s auction:

The lands are not Cheney’s and Bush’s. The lands are ours. They’re ours because they are part of our legacy. They are part of the human, American legacy. … We should not allow this to happen. It’s criminal.

Last night on the O’Reilly Factor, guest host Juan Williams asked White House Press Secretary Dana Perino to respond to Redford’s comments. After saying she would not “attack him personally,” Perino accused Redford of “blind hatred” of the president and said, “If somebody actually got him the facts, he would know that it’s illegal to drill in national parks.” Watch it:

Perino, it seems, is the one who needs to get “the facts.” No one is claiming that the Bush administration wants to extract resources from National Parks. The Bush administration is, however, attempting to extract resources from areas located just outside such parks and historic landmarks without properly considering the detrimental effects drilling would have.

Indeed, the National Trust for Historic Preservation filed suit Wednesday in an attempt to block today’s auction for that reason. According to the suit, in rushing to complete the sales before the end of the Bush administration, the BLM violated multiple federal laws including the National Historic Preservation Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and Federal Land Policy and Management Act.

In a statement to ThinkProgress, Karen Hevel-Mingo, Program Manager of the Southwest Region at National Parks Conservation Association, explained the expected negative impacts of drilling the areas that are up for auction today:

Oil and gas development near the parks would have a profound impact on park resources and the visitor experience. Air quality, water quality, views, night skies and natural quiet would all be in peril. Ozone levels at Arches and Canyonlands are already hitting the ceiling for allowed levels.

Additionally, roads and other infrastructure would be built allowing increased off road vehicle access and subsequent damage and creating long lasting scars across the landscape.

  11. Crusty Old Bastard says:

If memory serves there is a clause in our Constitution that makes an act of violence against our Government illegal. That being said, for the the last eight years we have been subjected to numerous acts, violent or not, that have been in violation of that same Constitution. Chicken George WTF has abrogated all his rights to Constitutional protection by his overt acts of violation of our Constitution. Ergo he can claim no protection under the laws of same and since he is not then protected by that document it is legal for me to propose violent action against the useless Son of a Birch (filters be damned). Why wait until next year to send him to Leavenworth? Just do a little retroactive abortion.

  17. ElBruce says:

Do these companies realize they’re getting shafted? After they buy the rights, they’ll become unusable once the BLM and EPA actually start enforcing the regulations on the books. It’s not like they can start drilling between now and Jan. 20th.

  18. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Oh, how they love their False Argument tactic. They accuse their opposition of advocating a position that they are not really advocating, and then insist that they are wrong. They are making up what their opponents say, and then claiming their opponents are wrong. Like when Bush refutes his critics by saying “I didn’t sell my soul just to be popular.” No one said that’s why he sold his soul, nor would they have advised him to do that. But it’s nice to hear admit that he sold his soul. I would like him to reveal the true reason he did it, if it wasn’t to be a popular president. (If that’s the reason he did it, then he should be allowed to get it back, since someone didn’t live up to their end of the bargain.)

This woman. The only entity that will hire her, has to be a far right tank of some kind. She has top qualifications. The ability to obfuscate, lie, twist and delude herself at the same time she pours out the BS.

Better still Fox here she comes. No one is too low for Fox.

  22. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Perino’s only job is to parrot the Bush administration’s policy, and to rationalize insane decisions. That’s what she’s paid to do. I think that’s true of any White House Press Secy. They are only as honest is the administration which they are representing. This group has been a nightmare, but hopefully (and I have my fears), that nightmare will end in about a month. And I can’t wait to change my screen name!

  23. 00mpp00 says:

And out glorious “agent of change” – Obama – can’t stop this nonsense? Where are the impeachment instructions? Why can’t he simply take charge from a president who has been a destructive lame duck for the last four years?

That’s downright treasonous to refuse to save one’s country…

Perino is a ditz and has always been confused. That is exactly why she was hired by Bushco. I will be sure to give money to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the future. Good luck Ms. Perino–we are not as dumb as your overlords think we are.

  28. marlow says:

There might have been a time when hatred of Bush was blind, like, maybe five minutes after his inauguration, but not now.

  29. sectionop92 says:

Dana should really do adult films when she leaves the White House. It’s her only hope to keep her in that comfy tax bracket.

Her first film could be called, “Journalistic Infidelities” or “Being Pounded on the Podium”.

  30. Robt says:

I am so grateful Dana Perino explained it so simply to all us children.

It is blind hate that wants to preserve our national heritage. Only those that disagree with Bush are spewing rhetoric and are hypobolic.

Dana should tend to any crediblity she may have left.

As one before Dana has recently come out with his truth and his disgust with the lying. Example of the Scooter Libby debacle was one.

  31. DICKERSON3870 says:

Drilling On Federal Lands? Is this about the Cuban missile crisis ‘thingy’?

  32. DICKERSON3870 says:

I’m dead, right? Please tell me that I’m dead and that this is Hell; so that it can’t possibly get any worse (i.e. Rick Warren delivering the invocation). Fear not that I “can’t handle the truth”. Death has a way of rendering any and all truth exquisitely sublime!

  33. Perry logan says:

Apparently, Republicans handle catastrophic defeat by saying crazy things.

Of all the phrases that a reasonable person might apply to Robert Redford, “blind hatred” is glaringly absent. The Right’s tendency to project their own worst qualities onto us can be very irritating.

Then again, maybe they’ve simply come unglued. It can’t be easy watching your party deconstruct itself.

  34. tokin librul says:

    “Perino Confused”?

    When has she NOT been?

There is nothing at all blind about the hatred which I bear for all things “Bush.” It is wide-eyed, knowing, purposeful, and all-consuming. I want to watch as Bush and all his minions are consumed, alive, by quick-lime, and all their earthly remainders reduced to muck and dust. And then I want to throw water on them.

Hate Bush? You do not know the fuuking half of it…

  36. Bozo The Neoclown says:

“hyberbolic, hyperventilating rhetoric adds nothing to the debate”

pppssstttt, dana, neither does being a partisan, nutt hugging lying beyotch.

  37. VerbalKint says:

I’m sure Perino is confused by many things, but this isn’t one of them. This is a classic Rovian strategy of misdirection: mischaracterize the criticism of an opponent, and erect a useful straw man doing so. Since asking a pathological liar questions is obviously useless, reporters should simply ask her what her boss is hiding from these days, and if he expects to spend the rest of his failed life hiding from it.

  38. scytherius says:

Just think, in one month, what these people think won’t matter one bit.

  39. bob hussein lablah says:

As a former Utahn, I have spent many days in Arches and surrounding areas. It doesn’t have to be within the National Park boundary to be a rare and beautiful land. Perhaps the most striking aspect (when you get away from tourists and unfortunate traffic) is the utter stillness and silence. Only the occasional breeze or caw of a solitary raven breaks it, and at times all you can hear is your own heartbeat.
Can’t wait to hear the hum of an oil rig to remind us who we are as a greedy, short-sighted species.

  40. icarus says:

It is legal to explore for oil and gas on BLM lands. Also, with the proper environmental documents, it is also legal to extract these resources. In addition, these activities can be accomplished with minimal impacts to the land.

If you would rather throw money at OPEC and other oil producing countries that hate America and what we stand for, then I would suggest we continue to follow our current course of action and say we are going to use alternative energy sources (which are not availabe and will take years before they supplant current energy resources).

If it was up to the NRDC, they would call every acre with a rock and tree on it ….. pristine wilderness. If you want to extract resources for energy without any ground disturbing activities, good luck to you. Another option, is to extract the energy from poorer third world countries that would extract the resources and ravage the environment.

  41. bob hussein lablah says:

Well, let’s see….would I rather throw money at OPEC or Cheney and his cronies? Gotta admit, that’s a tough one.
By the way, it will take years before the oil from these sources will be on the market. My money’s on the push for alternative energy. But you want to go ahead and scar pristine wilderness for short term Cheney-crony gain, good luck to your children and grandchildren.
