Warren Supports Program That Seeks To Cure Gays Of ‘Same Sex Attraction’

warren.jpgEarlier today, ThinkProgress noted that Pastor Rick Warren, who is set to give the invocation at President-elect Obama’s inauguration, told NBC’s Ann Curry recently that “it doesn’t matter” whether or not homosexuality is “part of your biology” because he believes it is still wrong. Warren added that it’s “part of maturity” for gay men and women to “reign” in their “impulses to the same sex.”

Given those views, it should come as no surprise that Warren is also a supporter of the ex-gay movement that tries to cure people of their homosexuality. A reader writes to Andrew Sullivan pointing out that Warren’s Saddleback Church operates a program called Celebrate Recovery that seeks to “help people overcome their hurts, habits and hang-ups” by encouraging people to “grow toward full Christlike maturity.”

As Sullivan’s reader notes — and the website for the program at First Baptist Church in Russellville, AR confirms — one of the “hang-ups” that Celebrate Recovery tries to cure is “same sex attraction“:

Most people probably don’t know this, but Warren’s Saddleback Church has a Friday night program called Celebrate Recovery. On the whole the program is modeled after the twelve steps, albeit with an evangelical supplement to it. There are subgroups in the program that cater to men with “addictions” to pornography, recovery alcoholics, and women with codependency issues. There is also a group for those who struggle with “same sex attraction”, the discourse of which is directly borrowed from the ex-gay movement. I know this, of course, because I was involved with the group in Spring of 2007.

In 2005, Warren told Fortune magazine that “he would counsel gays and lesbians to adopt a heterosexual lifestyle“:

Take the issue of gay rights. On the one hand, Warren says he and Kay have had dinner with gay couples who are their allies in the fight against AIDS. “I’m no homophobic guy,” he says. “I have a church full of people who are caring for gays who are dying of AIDS.” But he also says that he would counsel gays and lesbians to adopt a heterosexual lifestyle. “In looking at the hierarchy of evil, I would say homosexuality is not the worst sin,” he says. “I just believe it’s not the natural way. Certain body parts are meant to fit together. And that’s all I have to say about it.”

As ThinkProgress has noted, “most mainstream mental health professionals dismiss attempts to eradicate homosexual desires or to change someone’s sexual orientation as quackery that is potentially harmful.”

Update John Aravosis points out that Warren's church doesn't allow gay men or women who are "unrepentant" to be members.

But he also says that he would counsel gays and lesbians to adopt a heterosexual lifestyle

I have counseled people whose spouses did just that – until the self-loathing, shame, anxiety, and depression of staying in the closet was too much to bear, sought a divorce, and began trying to find a compatible homosexual partner. Unpleasant for everyone involved, including kids.

I would counsel Warren to adopt a homosexual lifestyle as research regarding the oppression experienced by this group (think “Black Like Me”). Of course, he runs the risk of finding out that he would be converted and choose teh gay.

  21. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

OK, Rick, enlighten me about something. Preachers often say that human beings have a sinful “nature”, that is, we instinctively and naturally have impure impulses that we must overcome and change. In fact, you say just this in your arguments here. And yet, then you go on to say that heterosexuality is natural and, therefore, the only way to be. What makes one impulse sinful and the other acceptable?

As I see it, there are only two possible answers. 1. It’s God’s will, in which case, I say let God judge and just leave homosexuals alone. 2. What is sinful is that which hurts other people. Homosexuality, in and of itself, does not do that. You, however, by oppressing a group of God’s children intentionally hurt them. That, in my book, is both a sin and unlawful.

So when does Warren begin disagreeing with Obama’s supporters without being disagreeable? Just wondering . . . or is that only for the Left, the Right gets to keep on keeping on as usual?

At the moment, Warren sounds like every other influential fundamentalist “preacher”, only younger. If the goal is to legitimize the next generation of intolerance — off to a good start.

  23. McWars says:

I really hope Obama had a punchline in mind when choosing this guy to speak. I’ll wait for the inauguration to play out, but I’m not liking the talking points coming from the incoming administration on this issue — i.e., “inclusive of all views.” I don’t buy that — it portrays anti-gay bigotry as deserving of being on the same stage of a progressive, equal-rights agenda. Let’s separate between right and wrong and not stash progressive views in a vending machine of hate.

  24. impeachcheneythenbush says:

I’m not gay, but I’ve had a number of gay friends over the years, and two of my best friends are two guys that have been together nearly thirty years now. Interestingly enough, they aren’t big proponents of gay marriage (other legal protections that can be taken to protect and care for each other they told me). I spoke to them about this issue today, and they said they think the MSM and the blogs (both liberal and right-wing) do what they always do…blow things up out of proportion, which is more likely to result in negative backlash toward gays and lesbians.

Personally, while I certainly don’t support Warren’s opinions about abortion and gay marriage. he has also not solely concentrated on these issues, but has emphasised the need to focus on world poverty and disease, fighting global warming and providing educational opportunities. He has tried to promote an evangelical movement that is much more moderate and centrist, and not tied to the Republican Party or to the Right. Again, my opinion only, but I think we need to be careful about an attitude that “throws the baby out with the bathwater.”

It wasn’t just in conservative communities — this was pretty common practice during the 50’s in public schools. Interestingly enough, about the same percentage of any population (10%) is left-handed, as are estimated to be homosexual. A fair number of U.S. Presidents (and our current President-Elect) are or have been left-handed. They are James A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. In this case, they exceed the “average,” among the population: 18%.

I hope gays don’t make the same mistake Afican Americans made. People today accept gays and value them to have the same rights as all Americans. Warren isn’t the only person with a different view and he’s not giving a speech on gays/abortion/torture. He’s there to pray. Obama is doing what I was taught many many many years ago long before most of this blog were born. Agree to disagree. Obama has spoken often of his respect for gays and how they should have the same rights as all Americans, Warren wont change that. There are two pastors with different views yet only Warren is targetted. Obama represents all people not a chosen few.
Blacks got their freedom and started nick picking and focusing on things that didn’t matter while the big issures got pushed aside. I’ve lived to see some many changes for the good happen and gays rights is just as important. This Country has differnt people and religians and all should be represented but as Obama is doing only a pray is to be done, Warren and the other Paster will have to leave their personal view at the door. Obama has put people of all colors and religians in his Cabinet and even Gays will have a position too. Stop aruging about the little things and let’s deal with real issues. Put your headphones on when Warren says the prayer if you don’t like him but I remember when I couldn’t vote and had to use the back door and now I’ve live to see a black man become President.

Lowery was pastor of the Warren Street United Methodist Church, in Mobile, Alabama from 1952 until 1961. His career in the civil rights movement began in the early 1950s in Mobile, Alabama. After Rosa Parks’ arrest in 1955, Lowery helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott. He headed the Alabama Civic Affairs Association, an organization devoted to the desegregation of buses and public places. In 1957, with Martin Luther King, Jr. Lowery founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and subsequently led the organization as its president from 1977 to 1997.

If he favored gay marriage, but thought global warming was a myth and pollution didn’t cause cancer, he would be fine with everybody?

  61. curious says:

It has been many years since being gay has been thought of as needing to be cured. The prevailing medical and psychological opinion is being gay is the way your wired at birth.

Like many people who don’t know what all these years of study have shown, Warren continues to promote the opposite myth. In all of the animal kingdom, in all species there are same sex matings. Ask any zoologist and they can tell you it is true in four legged animals. It is as natural to some as it is to be born blue eyed or beautiful or homely. Those things you can change with enough money. But being gay is the way you are wired. These matings cannot mean that sin if rife in the animal kingdom does it? The idea is ludicrous.

Being gay is rarely a life choice. But it is the way someone is born. And frankly I am sick of the whole continual religious aspect on something that is a biological fact. I have enough gay friends to know the difference. I would hate to be gay in this country. We seem to have learned nothing.

Warren is a nasty piece of work. But most evangelicals are.

People For the American Way ‘Profoundly Disappointed’ that Rick Warren Will Give Invocation

People For the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert responded today to the news that Rev. Rick Warren of Saddleback Church will deliver the invocation at the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama:

It is a grave disappointment to learn that pastor Rick Warren will give the invocation at the inauguration of Barack Obama.

Pastor Warren, while enjoying a reputation as a moderate based on his affable personality and his church’s engagement on issues like AIDS in Africa, has said that the real difference between James Dobson and himself is one of tone rather than substance. He has recently compared marriage by loving and committed same-sex couples to incest and pedophilia. He has repeated the Religious Right’s big lie that supporters of equality for gay Americans are out to silence pastors. He has called Christians who advance a social gospel Marxists. He is adamantly opposed to women having a legal right to choose an abortion.

I’m sure that Warren’s supporters will portray his selection as an appeal to unity by a president who is committed to reaching across traditional divides. Others may explain it as a response to Warren inviting then-Senator Obama to speak on AIDS and candidate Obama to appear at a forum, both at his church. But the sad truth is that this decision further elevates someone who has in recent weeks actively promoted legalized discrimination and denigrated the lives and relationships of millions of Americans.

Rick Warren gets plenty of attention through his books and media appearances. He doesn’t need or deserve this position of honor. There is no shortage of religious leaders who reflect the values on which President-elect Obama campaigned and who are working to advance the common good.

  64. katy says:

Sign our open letter to President-elect Obama.

    Dear President-elect Obama,

We were gravely disappointed to learn that Rev. Rick Warren has been selected to deliver the invocation at your inauguration. Rev. Warren was a poor choice to lead the invocation due to his long history of hateful, divisive rhetoric on important cultural and civil rights issues. It’s not just that we disagree with him on the issues–it’s that he uses his powerful platform to marginalize those who disagree with him. He is not the sort of leader who can help unite Americans. We agree with you that everyone should have a seat at the table, but only those who treat others with respect should get a seat of honor.

President Elect Obama is an enemy of the gay community. Black Americans are not friends of the gay community. It is gutterly understood that right wing fundi White Christians are truely enemies of the gay community; but, political correctness, especially this past election year, gave the gay community pause in uttering the fact of the inherent Christian based gay racism in the Black community. Not some, not few, not here and there; but, most Black Americans are gay racists. Black Americans must be viewed for the enemy that they are of the gay community along side with their Christian White counterparts. The gay community must work to impede Black political interests and rights insofar as that is what Black Americans are doing unto gay interests. THEY ARE ALSO THE ENEMY.
Just as the gay community would do no less to obstruct the interests and rights of any conservative republican white or otherwise; the gay community must direct the same vigor to obstruct, and impede any political gains of the Black community. They have no qualms about doing as much to the gay community. The gay community must rise above the political correctness of aligning itself to a fellow Democratic Party faction and recognize Black America is as much an enemy as is as the Conservative right wing American. Let’s work to vote against any and all Black American political interests at every level; be it school board or the office of the presidency. Work as hard as possible to minimize their hateful bigotted gay racist influence.
There is no difference between a Black homophobe and a Conservative one.
Ask yourself would have Hillary Clinton invited such a vile gay racist to her inaguration. Obama not only threw the gay community under the bus; he condoned gay racist speech.
I regret voting for this man.

Later known as the Holy Roman Empire. It doesn’t take an enormous intellect to discern why the supposed respect for government authority shows up in the “approved” Scriptures.

    TP, please…it’s R-E-I-N, not R-E-I-G-N.

  77. Robt says:

Warren should take a long look at his own evangelical core of leadership and the treatment they recieved and its results.

I think Rev Haggard was kicked out of the Gay cure treatment. So what does Rev Rick suggest for Rev Haggard?

Is there a Rev Haggard momment coming in the future from Rev Rick?

Rev Rick’s Rev Haggard momment is a yet……..

  78. GeorgeM says:

I agree with those that say, let’s have a FULLY OPEN Inauguration! Yes, indeedy! Along with Mr. Ricky Warren, we can have the KKK invited, some neonazis and have everything draped in sheets and swastikas. Why not? Just an expression of differing views and it will bring us all together! Gosh! Zieg!

Meanwhile, tricky Ricky oughta consider this study. Might just be that he’s a wannabe c–ksucker? (Hey, I’m a Queer so I can say that with all due nausea at the very notion…)

“Adams HE; Wright LW Jr; Lohr BA. Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal? J Abnorm Psychol 1996 Aug;105(3):440(c)445.

Department of Psychology, University of Georgia, Athens 30602(c)3013, USA.

The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (A. H. Buss & M. Perry, 1992). Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

  79. dae says:

An intervention is needed for Warren to help cure him of his delusional beliefs in the supernatural. He needs to be confronted with his homophobia and latent self-hatred. This poor imitation of a man thinks he can assuage his black soul by “good deeds” when in fact it is a cover for his despicable anti-human behavior.

  80. jb says:

Hey Impeach, The bible literalists seem to do a lot of picking and choosing to suit their preconceived biases. But the times are a changin’. I think it will take more than Hawaiian shirts and friendly demeanor to sell Warren’s snake oil. But there does seem to always be a willing bunch suspending disbelief to go for the Holy Roly Poly Ride.

  81. jb says:

Though I agree with the anger and resentment of the Gays, I do think this willingness to support State sponsored assassination is more egregious. Prop 8 is a set back, but has served to bring the debate front and center and that is a debate will eventually be won. Now as for killing world leaders because someone judges them as evil….

  82. Jackie says:

Warren is no different then the rest he’s preaching for money and it’s working. Now I’m 100 per cent for Gay Rights but I wonder why the attack is on Obama? Where were these groups for 8 years while Bush treated Gays like dirt. It seems because Obama believes in equality, people want to take adventage and get pushy. While Bush said in 2000 Gays aren’t included in any rights of the USA. Warren is giving a blessing as is another Pastor who is supported of Gay Rights. All Americans should be glad none of the Pastors will have an office in the White House like they did during the Bush Administratiion. Gay’s have some powerfull people fighting for their equal rights like Obama, Biden and even Caroline Kennedy so leave Warren to his collection plate and let’s deal with real issues of change.

  83. JerryJerr says:

Someone needs to design a program that will cure Christians of judging others so harshly. If I would have known that Rick Warren was going to give the invocation, I would not have contributed 1000 dollars to Obama.

Obviously Rick Warren has not matured as a loving and non-judging Christian. Grow up you homophobic nutcase.

  84. dhologram says:

Rick Warren say that the Gay community is only 2% of the overall US population. In reality, Gay people account for 10% of the population….

This ultimately works out to mean the following:

July 2007 estimated US population = greater than 300 million people

Rick Warren’s 2% figure against this total would = 6 million total Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Transgender people in the USA.

In reality the figure is greater than that, equal to 10% of the US population which equals 30 million total Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Transgender people in the USA.

Rick Warren is willing to discount and forget about the difference, equalling 24 million people.

24 million people would have to disappear to allow Warren’s math to be correct.

What does Obama have to say about it?

    “….It’s time to work together….”

I know of another time and another country that wanted to erase certain groups from their overall population….

That country was Germany and the story we know too well….

The first group of people on their list to eradicate wasn’t the Jews….

Anyone want to guess which group the Nazi’s “forgot about” first?
