Report: White vigilante groups blockaded small town in post-Katrina New Orleans and murdered blacks.
Earlier this week, A.C. Thompson of The Nation revealed that after Hurricane Katrina, white vigilante groups patrolled New Orleans, blockaded streets, and shot at least eleven black men. It “was like pheasant season in South Dakota. If it moved, you shot it,” said one vigilante. Color of Change is organizing a campaign to tell Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) and state officials to investigate the shootings, as “Louisiana’s broken law enforcement agencies have refused to investigate these crimes.” Watch Thompson’s video on his report:

It’s as the Family Guy skit goes, everyone in the media wants to cover the pretty, lily white girl’s murder. But when it comes to a minority, no way…not interested.
Caylee is total sensationalism, easy sell to anyone in the white, dumb as a stump world with a child and a short attention span. Hell, if one stacked up the bodies of all those men, women and children who’ve died over the past eight years because of insane Republican policies, the Bush/Cheney/Rove White House would be buried under their rotting corpses.
Preventable 9/11 attacks. Iraq War. Space Shuttle disaster. Hurricane Katrina aftermath.
Concerning Katrina, a competent, moral, non-partisan presidency would have kept politics out of any federal disaster relief effort. But then New Orleans flooded.
Corrupt White House Republicans (Karl Rove) saw an opportunity to smear Louisiana Democrats, primarily Gov. Blanco (D) and New Orleans Mayor Nagin (D)…but only if the situation in Louisiana (and New Orleans) went from bad to worse…with the deteriorating situation being blamed on the Democrats.
A two-tiered, top-level White House Republican strategy was implemented: 1) undercut FEMA’s efforts to get help to Katrina survivors, both in New Orleans and surrounding parishes, and 2) mobilize the right-wing news media to spread false “Republican talking points” accusing Louisiana Democrats of being the sole ones responsible for the images we were seeing on television.
I distinctly remember one of these lying Republican talking points: Gov. Blanco (D) hadn’t officially requested federal disaster relief assistance.
Strange. The official White House website displayed Gov. Blanco’s formal written request for federal help that she submitted 48 hours before Katrina made landfall, as well as the official written response by the White House, in which a FEMA disaster coordinator was assigned to setup a command post in Baton Rouge to facilitate getting federal disaster relief to Katrina ravaged areas.
(There are still people, I bet, who believe that Gov. Blanco didn’t ask for federal help, even though a FEMA disaster coordinator, by official state invitation, was operating a FEMA command center in Baton Rouge during Katrina, just as there are still people who believe that Saddam Hussein never allowed U.N. weapons inspectors into pre-war Iraq to search for WMD, even though President Bush kicked out of Iraq all the U.N. weapons inspectors conducting WMD searches just prior to Bush starting the war. In fact, there are a whole lot of similarities between post-invasion Iraq and post-Katrina New Orleans/Louisiana…lack of security, looting, revenge killings…so this report of vigilante killings of black U.S. citizens outside, and even inside, New Orleans following Katrina doesn’t come as a surprise).
I know why there was a lack of security in Iraq following the start of war (Gen. Shinseki’s and the U.S. War College’s prescient advice weren’t followed), but what happened in post-Katrina New Orleans and Louisiana?
Since the Bush/Cheney administration entered office eight years ago, its goal has been to privatize everything, turning traditional government responsibilities over to private, crony companies and individuals, so these entities can profit at taxpayer expense. Katrina was no different.
In the days following the flooding of New Orleans, while Louisiana Democrats were being smeared and FEMA’s federal disaster relief efforts were being blocked, the Bush administration began demanding that Gov. Blanco allow the federalization of Louisiana, turning over control of her state’s national guard units (those not in Iraq) and her state’s security to the Bush administration…which is another way of saying that the Bush administration wanted control so they could no-bid contract a bunch of Blackwater types to provide for-profit private security patrols for Louisianans.
Gov. Blanco (D) repeatedly refused this demand, as any state governor would have done. She tried to work with the FEMA disaster coordinator in Baton Rouge, but his efforts (and orders) were being blocked by someone further up the federal chain of command (Rove? Chertoff? Cheney? Rumsfeld? Bush?). Her own state’s national guard units (and equipment) had been devastated by Katrina, so she turned to other state governors, asking for any help they could offer, to send any national guard units and equipment (not in Iraq) that they could spare to help provide security in New Orleans and surrounding Katrina-ravaged areas.
Time was critical, though, following Katrina’s landfall and the flooding of New Orleans. Establishing security on the ground was essential (just like over in post-invasion Iraq). But top Bush administration officials had other plans, other priorities, so time was wasted, FEMA’s federal disaster relief efforts were blocked, “street” security was not established, racist right-wing vigilante groups were allowed to run wild and innocent people were murdered (just like over in post-invasion Iraq).
Note: any of these racists in Louisiana who murdered black U.S. citizens could be plotting to go after the biggest prize of all in their warped and twisted mind, President Barack Obama…rationalizing that they’re only defending themselves and their racist ways. If these killings in Louisiana, therefore, are not investigated, then who knows what might happen.

I’m a proud Liberal/Progressive and gun owner. I’ve been on the receiving end of death threats when I was on the radio in Phoenix defending Clinton in the late 90’s. I’m no hero or swaggering macho dude, but a police captain sat me down and explained the facts of life to me one night when I was distraught after the tenth or so threat. Be prepared to defend yourself; don’t be a hapless victim; be careful. So I did. I wish black men would do that when attacked by murderous scum. Okay, go ahead and criticize me.

As a life-long resident of South Louisiana and an ex-resident of NOLA, I offer these facts as I see them: Louisiana is a poverty-stricken state, the major industry in New Orleans is crime, there is no tax base down there and above all, and if you look in the dictionary for meteorologically and geographically disadvantaged, you will find a picture of New Orleans there. I tell everyone I meet, New Orleans is a very, very BAD place; don’t ever go there, not even for 5 minutes. Just don’t go there. I have very little hope or faith for NOLA………..it just is what it is.

If they had been inside their homes and someone tried to break in, I would support self protection. But they had taken to the streets and were hunting colored skin to attack just for the crime of living.
But. Trying to pretend that all black people only took food and water when they looted is not helpful. There were videos of people carrying off TVs and other non edibles. I sat next to a twelve year old AA girl on a plane trip who fussed that her Mama said she wasn’t old enough to go looting but was mollified because her brother promised to bring her some good stuff. Blacks and others have been guilty of looting for fun and profit. These white people are definitely guilty of murder and assault. Pretending is pretending. The black people in this story were not looting and these white people were not protecting their property. But we need to be honest about everything if we expect people to listen when we speak. These people must be prosecuted. And looting must also not be tolerated. They are not equal crimes, but they are both crimes that make the other side livid with anger and rage and they both further racial divides.
Shooting innocent people trying to reach dry ground is not protecting one’s home. It is attempted murder.

We must never forget that along with the potential for great good, we as creatures still possess the inclination toward evil thoughts and deeds. To bring such people to justice must be a priority if the species is to advance in wisdom and compassion. And all of us must remain vigilant in our awareness of the seeds of such thought and behavior in ourselves, and seek to provide comfort and aid to the persecuted.
