ThinkFast: December 22, 2008

While auto executives were criticized for their lavish corporate jets, Wall Street has largely escaped such scorn. “Six financial firms that received billions in bailout dollars still own and operate fleets of jets to carry executives to company events and sometimes personal trips.” Insurance giant AIG, which received $150 billion in bailout funds, has seven planes, making it “one of the largest fleets among bailout recipients.”

“The Associated Press contacted 21 banks that received at least $1 billion in government money” to ask how much has been spent and where the rest of the money has gone. “None of the banks provided specific answers,” AP reports. “Some banks said they simply didn’t know where the money was going.”

Radio syndicator Westwood One is expected to announce this week that former senator Fred Thompson “will begin hosting a two-hour show in March” during Bill O’Reilly’s soon-to-be-vacated time slot. Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani was rumored to be in negotiations for the slot, but “a deal was not struck.”

During his interview on Fox News Sunday yesterday, Vice President Dick Cheney asserted that 9/11 was his “highest moment in office.” He explained: “The way in which that changed the nation, and set the agenda for what we had to deal with as an administration.”

At the Muslim Public Affairs Council convention this weekend, Pastor Rick Warren said, “I love Muslims. And for the media’s purpose, I happen to love gays and straights.” Juan Cole, who spoke at the conference and came away impressed with Warren, writes, “If Warren is the future of the American evangelical movement, then many more evangelicals might end up Democrats.”

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) said yesterday “it was wrong” for President-elect Obama to invite Rick Warren to give the invocation at Obama’s inauguration, citing Warren’s comparison of gay marriage to incest. “I found that deeply offensive and unfair,” Frank said on CNN. “[B]eing singled out to give the prayer at the inauguration is a high honor. … And, yes, I think it was wrong to single him out for this mark of respect.”

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino issued a scathing response to Sunday’s New York Times article that said President Bush’s “philosophy” of deregulation and home ownership helped stoke the mortgage crisis. The White House accused the Times of “gross negligence” and relying on “hindsight with blinders on and one eye closed.”

The Obama team’s “review of contacts with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will show that Rahm Emanuel had only one phone conversation with Blagojevich,” including only a “passing reference” to the Senate vacancy. The review “did not include records of conversations taped by federal prosecutors.”

Though the Status of Forces Agreement with Iraq calls for all American combat troops to be out of the cities by the end of June, “military planners are now quietly acknowledging that many will stay behind as renamed ‘trainers’ and ‘advisers’ in what are effectively combat roles.” The troops would still be armed and able to “go on combat patrols with their Iraqi counterparts.”

And finally: The infamous “Obama Girl” has inspired an imitator…in Israel. Dvir Bar, a backer of Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, has become “Livni Boy.” In the clip, Bar “showers next to a Livni poster and raps his way through Tel Aviv in praise of the leader of the centrist Kadima party.” “She’s a woman who looks a lot better in person. TV doesn’t flatter her. She’s cool,” said Bar in an interview. Watch it here.

Stark Co. plane crash: Who was Michael Connell?

Michael Connell was killed when the Piper Supercub he was piloting crashed three miles short of an Akron-Canton Airport runway. He leaves behind a wife and four children.

Connell, 45, of Bath Township, is considered to be one of the Republican Party’s top computer experts. He led the companies that designed websites for the GOP and a virtual who’s-who list of republican political leaders including President George W. Bush, Senator John McCain, as well as national organizations. Connell developed a host of federal government software and data management systems. Connell is also said to be a close confidant of the Bush family.

Earlier this year Connell was subpoenaed to testify in an Ohio federal court regarding voter fraud just days before the November presidential election. His alleged intimate knowledge of White House and Capitol Hill email systems has been a hot topic of conversation for Washington insiders regarding the Karl Rove/White House email scandal.

Connell founded New Media Communications, based in Cleveland, is the CEO of GovTech Solutions, based in Akron, and is associated with several other successful IT, marketing and advertising enterprises. His companies have won numerous awards for the development of political websites, marketing campaigns, and use of technology. New Media Communications placed third on the prestigious Weatherhead 100, a list compiled by Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management that recognizes Northeast Ohio’s fastest growing companies.

Sorry but AIG has nothing on Bank of America:

Bank of America: Registered as the owner of nine planes, including four Gulfstreams, FAA records show. Company spokesman Scott Silvestri would not say whether the company has changed its policy on corporate aircraft use since taking $15 billion in bailout money.

CEO Kenneth Lewis, also required to use company aircraft for personal trips, had $127,643 in such travel last year, according to a March filing with the SEC.

**Thank you for getting this in as the first post. Very few sources are even mentioning this story. For some reason it has been the one story that has disturbed me more than most. Larisa Alexandrovna has provided some excellent background and coverage of Mike Connell’s life and death. Here is one of the first. Click on her home page for several other updates (and questions.)

I could care less about bringing “Evangelicals” into the Democratic Party. Look at what harm they did to the GOP! The right is imploding right now, largely because of the support and policies promoted by this same group.

Evangelicals and other so-called “Christians” have been voting against their own interests for years. Let them lay down in the gutter with the rest of the GOP and rot. We do not need these people in our party.

Israeli Blockade ‘Forces Palestinians to Search Rubbish Dumps for Food’UN fears irreversible damage is being done in Gaza as new statistics reveal the level of deprivation
    by Peter Beaumont

[...The figures collected by the UN agency show that 51.8% - an "unprecedentedly high" number of Gaza's 1.5 million population - are now living below the poverty line. The agency announced last week that it had been forced to stop distributing food rations to the 750,000 people in need and had also suspended cash distributions to 94,000 of the most disadvantaged who were unable to afford the high prices being asked for smuggled food
    -/-
"Things have been getting worse and worse," said Chris Gunness of the agency yesterday. "It is the first time we have been seeing people picking through the rubbish like this looking for things to eat. Things are particularly bad in Gaza City where the population is most dense
    -/-
"This is not a humanitarian crisis," he said. "This is a political crisis of choice with dire humanitarian consequences."]

In short a government with the 4th most powerful military on the planet is slowly starving a nation where half of the ppoulation is too young to attend highschools. This is criminal oppression behind the cowardly mask of ’security’.

    Good morning all.

Cruise Ships Allowed to Dump Pollution a Mile from U.S. ShoresWASHINGTON – December 19 –

The Environmental Protection Agency today published a permit that will allow cruise ships to dump unlimited quantities of untreated graywater-a harmful pollutant-into the ocean just a mile from U.S. shores.
    -\-
The permit issued today was a final Clean Water Act General Permit for vessel pollution discharges. The permit allows ships to dump untreated graywater one nautical mile from U.S. shores if they are travelling at speeds above six knots. The permit also requires ships to monitor their graywater discharges only once every three months, leaving them free to ignore malfunctioning systems the other 361 days of the year.
Cruise ship graywater contains contaminants such as oil and grease, metals, pesticides, viruses, fecal coliform bacteria from human sewage, medical and dental waste, detergents, and cleaners. A large cruise ship on a one-week voyage can generate one million gallons-which would fill 33 large swimming pools-of graywater.
    -/-
Significantly, the EPA has also found that it would cost cruise ships only $7.09 per passenger to treat graywater using the best water treatment technology, and yet the permit fails to require treatment of polluted discharges beyond one nautical mile…]

jpopphan, “evangelical” does not equal “right wing”. It means a person who shares the “good news” of Christianity with others. Many liberals/progressives/Democrats can be described this way. They are not as likely to fundamentalistic in their beliefs or as aggressive in their witnessing.

“You blind guides who strain out the Gnat and Swallow the Camel…”

These were good words when Jesus said them to the Pharisees of his time and remain good words today. Sadly, the media hasn’t changed much in over 2,000 years… Its just gotten better at covering the butts of corporate corruption while keeping us common folk from ever hearing the real truth.

I was watching yet another “Corporate Talking Head” this morning complaining about the tidbit thrown the auto industry. Personally, I would rather spend that minuscule by comparison amount to the 700 BILLION to walk street who pocket OUR money and don’t give our wage makers a dime. Better to give to the auto industry who at least will keep our wager earners in a job than to Wall Street who care little about anyone except their Idols of Greed.

In the mean time… The media keeps screaming bloody murder about the “Gnats” all the while shoving the camels down our throats…

I’m pretty sure “Directed EMP” weapons are a figment of science fiction, but I don’t think they’d be untraceable either. They’d have to leave some interference on the voice recorders or other telemetry data.

Really, the best way to cause a plane to crash without leaving evidence is to doctor the reports and threaten the investigators. That’s probably how this one will get cleaned up.

Paulson and his henchman at the Treasury should be put in stocks, or worse, for this abysmal lack of control over these funds. No doubt, most of that money is being hoarded by the banks, and not loaned at all, which was the point of the bailout. Hence, the credit markets are still largely frozen. Those banks should either be forced to disclose exactly where every penny is, or the funds should be returned immediately.

Man, FRIGIDMAN, how in the world do you keep up with this golbal warming thing? It is SO changeable. Kind of like the weather. I wonder what it would look like in worldwide patters compared to the past patterns.

    On topics:

Wall street will walk away with their welfare checks and there will likely be no acocuntability, unless congress actually deamnds accountability. The reason congress probably won’t demand accountability on anything is because most of THEM are guilty of a variety of crimes, and they don’t want to be held accountable themselves.

Neocons are covering their tracks as much as possible, which means a required series of “accidents”, some lethal, some just of the shotgun to the face variety. As long as the person with the face full of buckshot makes a personal apology for getting in the line of fire and ruining the shot then all will be forgiven. Expect more.

  38. Keith says:

“Experts have even testified before Congress about concerns that terrorists may use EMPs, which they said were capable of short-circuiting computers, satellites, radios, radar, and traffic lights. An EMP shockwave can be produced by a device small enough to fit in a briefcase, they said. Stanley Jakubiak, senior civilian official for nuclear command, control, communications, and EMP policy for the Defense Department, admitted in 1999 Congressional testimony that the feds have studied EMPs for years.

U.S. Marine Corp Major M. CaJohn went farther than that in a 1988 report, writing that officials had sought remedies for the effects of EMPs at least since the early 1960s. The Air Force built an EMP testing facility called TRESTLE in 1980 at Kirkland Air Force Base in New Mexico. The Navy also erected an EMP testing facility called EMPRESS I at Point Patience on the Patuxent River in Maryland. Other agencies have their own EMP facilities.”
