Last year, Rush Limbaugh came under intense criticism for repeatedly airing a parody song called “Barack the Magic Negro” by conservative satirist Paul Shanklin. The song, which dealt with Obama’s popularity amongst white voters, was widely attacked as being racist. Doing an Al Sharpton impersonation, Shanklin sings the song to the tune of “Puff the Magic Dragon.” Limbaugh, however, tried to defend it as “creative” and “funny.” Listen to the song here:
The Hill reports that for his Christmas greeting this year, RNC chair candidate Chip Saltsman sent out a CD of the “Barack the Magic Negro” song. Saltsman’s Christmas message:
“I look forward to working together in the New Year,” Saltsman wrote. “Please enjoy the enclosed CD by my friend Paul Shanklin of the Rush Limbaugh Show.”
Shanklin’s CD, “We Hate the USA,” also contains songs such as “Star Spanglish banner” and “Wright place, wrong pastor.”
Saltsman is refusing to apologize, telling CNN: “I think most people recognize political satire when they see it. I think RNC members understand that.”
Saltsman isn’t the only RNC candidate who has come under fire on race issues. South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson was a member of a whites-only country club until recently, when he withdrew his membership in order to lay the groundwork for his RNC candidacy.
This is not satire, it’s pathetic and childish and it’s harmful. Really, this is all the Republican Party has to offer? The next 4-8 years and hopefully more, are going to be long ones for the conservative movement, no telling what they’re going to come up with next. What a shameful bunch.
December 27th, 2008 at 9:58 amExpect the racists in the right to try and ridicule Obama non-stop for the next four years. One I heard on C-Span’s American Journal this morning, was that commemorative plates with Obama’s likeness had begun selling in northeastern states for 29 bucks, but now are going for nineteen.
I predict a steady national rise in linen sales.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:01 amThis will be a plus for him with the Greedy Old Perverts.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:01 amPresident elect Obama is still President elect Obama. He’ll do the mature, responsible thing and ignore this.
The narrowminded, pinheads of the GOP are on their way to being a regional party based in the south.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:04 amSaltsman and Limbaugh often approach the line of open racism, only to crawfish back the cover of double talk.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:07 amI don’t think anyone should be particularly surprised by this chiidish act of biogotry. The mere fact that Rush Limbaugh was involved should say a lot about the entire affair. It will be interesting to read how the Repignofascist trolls address this topic in the comments. As for me this simply reinforces the new direction of the Repignofascist Party – its the same as the old direction. Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms would be so proud.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:08 amFrom a “professional/objective” POV, a ‘better’ filk mighta been “Rudolf, The Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The syllables “Barack, The Magic Negro” match up better, is all I’m sayin’.
By the way, why do the Israelis think bombing and killing more than 150 people in Gaza, and injuring hundreds of others, is gonna stop the Palestinians or interfere with their resistance to ethnic cleansing? They’ve been killing folks there, wholesale (more than 500 folks this year, prior to the last attack, including 75 kids), to no appreciable effect. The recent spate of mortar and rocket attacks–in reply to a IDF incursion that killed a dozen Gazans–hadn’t, afaik, injured any Israelis.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:08 amI don’t doubt for a minute that next presidential election the Republicans will be running on some sort of “Let’s put a white man back in the White House” theme.

Glenn Greenwald said it best:
“The definitive adolescent mindset is pure self-centeredness personified; it demands infinite understanding of and sympathy with one’s own predicament and choices, and offers none for anyone else’s.”
Saltsman is refusing to apologize, telling CNN: “I think most people recognize political satire when they see it. I think RNC members understand that.”
Yes, most people do recognize political satire, and this certainly isn’t that. It’s nasty, hate-producing racism. And he is at least correct to say RNC members recognize it for what it really is; unfortunately, many of them are quite content to enjoy such racist garbage.

December 27th, 2008 at 1:11 pmAfter 8 years of watching the Media and everyone Leader of the country defend every action of President Bush saying the United States respects the President. Some Americans who spoke up against bush or Cheney were arrested under the Patroit Act. Even when the Iraqi Shoe Man tossed two shoes at Bush some Americans and the Media called it disrespectful and that a President no matter if you liked him or not should be shown respect. Now doesn’t President Elect deserves that same respect or have things changed because Obama will be President?
December 27th, 2008 at 1:14 pmZooey Says:

If you look carefully at the names, you’ll see that most of the thread involves just a few people. It’s also interesting that the wingers constantly have to resort to name calling. It’s never sufficient to refer to “Obama”, but he has to be labeled in some version of “the One” or “the messiah” — but it is only the wingers (and at least one clinton fan) who ever suggest anything exalted about the president-elect.
And it’s also obvious that all those complaints about liberals not respecting the office of the presidency or the commander-in-chief was the horse manure we always knew it was. Now that a liberal democrat is going to be the President, the Right can pick and choose about “respect.”

December 27th, 2008 at 1:29 pmThe Republicans have spent a lot of time and money, especially over the last eight years, controlling the information that members of the military receive — feeding them doses of Limbaugh and preventing access to liberal blogs. It isn’t surprising under the circumstances that Barack Obama is viewed with a certain amount of skepticism by active duty forces.
But they’ve also had an opportunity to see how the “support” of the Bush Administration has really played out for them, in stop loss, materiel failure, medical care and the resistance to the new GI Bill. Perhaps they’re skeptical of all politicians at this point, and I wouldn’t blame them a bit.

December 27th, 2008 at 1:36 pmRegarding Obama’s trip to wish happy holiday’s to the troops. The fact that they didn’t stand up and clap only says that this was an impromptu visit, not the staged photo ops that Bush held. Then there was the plastic turkey photo op.
Or maybe you recall how he tried to “race” a vet with artificial legs.
Bush always needs to set up his audience, prepare them, cue them, and then smile when they applaud as told.
Bush – the C-in-C who sent them to fight an illegal and unwarranted war based on lies, who sent them ill-equipped, who cut their families’ assistance, who cut their medical care, who refuses to let their funerals be seen.
He makes sure that when he makes a rare visit to Walter Reed, he brings his photogs along, and blinks back a tear for the camera.

The thing about closet racists is they often run off their mouths, saying what they really think. It’s only when they get caught making racists remarks do they claim “it was just a joke.”

i’m taking a short break from the “space invaders” here, reading this thread, i am reminded of a small confrontation i had at the family day christmas…
at one point i’m sitting aside, alone at a small table, looking around at the 40ish people gathered, and from one table i hear “did you hear about the n—– who did this… about the n—– who did that… “, really ugly racial jokes, from a group of nephews and one brother, the dad of 2 of them…
and i shout to them “SHUT UP” … another joke… “STOP IT!”…
it seems the joker is ignoring me, so i get up saying “STOP IT! THAT IS SO NOT COOL. SHUT UP. NOT COOL AT ALL.” … by then, and with a lower voice, i shake his shoulders and then walk away…
thinking back now, i am angry at myself for not yelling louder and making a scene… i’m thinking, ‘how can all those “holy” people not back me up?… not say a thing?’…

What you did was perfect.
I too struggle with republican relatives. They are not the religious type, not the ober rich but are the the upper middle class and are not the outwardly racist type. But these people, just about all of them are secretly racists…. the type viewing their self as perfect and as being racist is wrong they could never see them self as a racist. Example: Being in a nicer Mexican restaurant with them I found my mother giving the Mexican waiter disrespectful looks and there was no reason for this. He was embarrassed, I was embarrassed and we exchanged knowing glances… but no one else picked up on this…. and if I was ever to confront my mother about this she would not get it. Another time during the 2000 election my mother commented on how more women needed to be more like Katherine Harris… she was not kidding! I have come to the conclusion the world these folks live in is all about appearances… if the make up and clothes are right, color of skin, if the house looks just right, what car one drives, where does he/she work….
Like many families mine has had some wealth and fame…but the only person I really admire was a grandmother, 1/8 Comanche Indian and very proud of it, very little income and she did not define herself with appearances or material things…. a truly happy woman by being who she was. And to this day, my inwardly racists sister makes fun of her. This sister being one that is a RN – should know better and one who is not speaking to me over a reply I sent her responding to a hideous clip she sent me concerning Obama. My respect levels are getting low of this woman anyway.
Maybe I would have turned out that way also if I had not taken the paths in life working and dealing with minorities in major cities as I did. And maybe with an Obama administration more will begin to stretch their judgment of a person beyond appearances… beyond the color of ones skin.
December 27th, 2008 at 6:09 pmSo, the GOP shot itself in the foot in 2006, and then in the rear-end in 2008 with McCain’s terrible, disorganized campaign and a horrible, radical VP candidate who liked to pal around with america haters and secessionists. Not satisfied with damaging itself twice in two years, this once great party – the once party of non-discrimination and non-racism, to note, the GOP has decided to now shoot itself in the head with yahoos like Saltsman spitting out racist crap like this. But the worst part is not that he has done what he is done. The worst part is that the GOP has been very quiet and tacitly accepts his racial junk.
This is the death knell for the GOP and will relegate it to being a regional party for one, maybe two generations, which is bad for the USA, for we need a competitive 2-party system in order to maintain a healthy representative democracy within the framework of a republic.
December 27th, 2008 at 6:44 pmOne would think that someone with a surname of Saltsman would be more careful about making a point of ethnic jokes- especially in the wake of the Madoff fiaso. Or again, maybe these guys are really that dumb.

December 28th, 2008 at 2:09 amIf they want this Independent to ever listen to them again they need to join the human race.
RNC – Racist Neo-Conservative
December 28th, 2008 at 2:12 amSaltsman’s Holiday CD was sent to fellow insiders because they think such hateful parodies are hysterical. Bigotry shuns fresh air and sunshine. Someone should get a copy, make copies, and put it on eBay. Let’s hear what all the fuss is about. Is it just good ‘ol boy stupidity, chubby white guys having a little fun at the expense of the little guy, or is it hardcore bigotry?
December 28th, 2008 at 10:46 amLet’s hear it, let America decide, and let’s hear from Graham, McCain, Palin, Huckabee and other leaders of the GOP.
Joe Cantwell: Are you saying Biden never called Obama “clean and articulate”? Check out this NYT article:

Furthermore, I have better things to do than engage losers like you. I don’t spend countless hours thinking up clever things to say to other imbeciles who need to get a life as well.
December 28th, 2008 at 12:00 pmAce, if you have better things to do then please go do them.

December 28th, 2008 at 2:50 pmThe Far Right is destroying the Republican Party in plain sight for all to see. Who’s got popcorn?!
PS: Ken Blackwell once again proves he’s one of the worst human beings in America.
December 28th, 2008 at 6:18 pmIf the leadership of the republican party
December 28th, 2008 at 10:21 pmcannot understand this issue…
I really dont know what to think.
Anyone who would propagate this nonsense(under
any other circumstances)would no longer
be eligible for consideration. People in the
workplace have been fired for far less.
Can we mount a letter writing campaign?
Mail in shoes? How about an Amicus brief
for copyright infringment (music)? The piece
is profoundly Racist!!! These people
are part of the leadership in this country
for better or worse, and have to understand
what is acceptable behaviour and without
validation of accomdationalist, apologists
and hacks. The question is what are we
going to do? TS
Black folks be funny! Funny songs ’bout Black folks be funny!
December 28th, 2008 at 11:44 pmThis goes to show what the Republicans are capable of and are made of. They are capable of stooping to a level my dog would not want to be. These Republicans are made of bigotry, hatred, greed, arrogance, ignorance, insanity, selfish, hypocrisy, and everything resembles the pig-style of thinking. 2009 will mark the beginning of an end to GOP.
December 28th, 2008 at 11:56 pmIt doesnt matter what your political affiliation is or your back ground for that matter. There will always be racism in some form or fashion. Most people choose to hide it and some come out of the closet. Remember it is a small percentage that are racist either black or white, and generally are not well educated. So to say that all republicans are racist is pretty ignorant in and of itself. comments and question?
December 29th, 2008 at 2:43 amI listened to the song, and I’ve heard much worse. That doesn’t change that this was completely tasteless and in bad humor.
Republican or Democrat, I’ve heard worse jokes. What worries me is that someone who wants to lead the RNC was making this joke.
Nevertheless, I hope he continues in his indignant defense of his actions, and gets the RNC position. Just as I hope Sarah Palin openly announces her intent to run as a serious candidate in 2012. Why? Because I want the GOP to hurry up and crash and burn already instead of die a slow death over the next however many years.
December 29th, 2008 at 3:52 amWhy such hate for conservative views caleo? Are you an extreme leftist and only share liberal views or have YOU in some time of your life expressed conservative views. If you have expressed conservative views in your life, I would consider that as some form of hypocrisy. That is why this nation should get completly away from Dem’s and Rep’s. Times have changed from the old days where there may have been one extreme or another in political parties. I say lets bring back the whig party? Or just be independant and vote for who can do the better job, be it rep or dem.

Are YOU insinuating judging or making jokes and fun of ones color or ethnicity, of what this article is about, is OK?
Maybe you could explain yourself… as many here, as myself, do not understand this evil ignorant lack of humanity.
December 29th, 2008 at 3:24 pmEnough where did you come up with such a ridiculous statement.
December 29th, 2008 at 7:35 pmCaleo’s general comment about the GOP and my retort have absolutely nothing to do with your statement. Im not insinuating anything. I just wondered why she had such hate towards the GOP. Maybe you misread or understood what we both stated. Re read my replies again. I am not implying or insinuating anything except this: EVERYbody in this world needs to grow thicker skin. View this as you wish. You think I really give two shits what this person did towards Barack. NO! Why? Because it is completely out of my hands and does not affect anything or anybody in my life. Is this distasteful? Thats up to each and every individual. Thicker skin I say. DO you actually think a show like all in the family back in the 70’s would work today? NO!! Why? Because people are to sensitive and need to be politically correct. I say BS! Watch a little show on HBO called Bill Maher. I dont believe everything he says but I respect the hell out of him because he calls it like he sees it and does not sugar coat it. YOur turn!
Enough! Just wondering? when you take a test (any test) are you the type that reads to much into the question?
December 29th, 2008 at 7:39 pmKenneth Blackwell, who has posted something on this particular remark about Barak Obama, is one reason that the Bush administration was elected for the second time (2004).The Diebold machines were “FIXED” to show George W. Bush, as the winner. There were no copies printed to show whom we voted for. Therefore, if we thought we voted for John Kerry, there was no copy to indicate whom we voted. To make sure that we weren’t taken advantages of, my husband, son and I voted absentee ballots, drove down to the Cuahoga County mail and made sure that our votes would be counted. And, now Kenneth Blackwell, wants to be the head of the Ohio Reppublican Party..How dare he? What a travesty. He should be arrested, and spend at least 10 years in the “State Pen”.
