Cheney: ‘I Don’t Have Any Idea’ Why People Don’t Like Me

Only 29 percent of Americans approve of the job Dick Cheney is doing as Vice President. In an interview with his hometown Wyoming newspaper, The Caspar Star-Tribune, Cheney expressed his bewilderment over his low approval numbers:

QUESTION: How do you explain your low approval rating?

CHENEY: I don’t have any idea. I don’t follow the polls.

My experience has been over the years that if you govern based upon poll numbers, upon trying to improve your overall poll ratings, people I’ve encountered who do that are people who won’t make tough decisions. And the job the president has and those who advise him is to make those basic fundamental decisions for the nation that nobody else is authorized or able to make.

In addition to his well-documented abuse of power and disregard for the rule of law, Cheney’s public disapproval ratings might be explained in part by his own personal disregard for the public. When told that two-thirds of Americans disapproved of the Iraq war, Cheney responded “so?,” adding that he didn’t care what the American people thought.

While he says he doesn’t follow the polls, Cheney was all too proud to state shortly after the 2004 elections: “President George W. Bush won the greatest number of popular votes of any presidential candidate in history.” (That’s no longer true.)

Cheney is still holding out hope, however, that the polls will turn his way. He said recently, “I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road in light of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”

Hey Dick, could the fact that you are a Traitor and a prikc have anything to do with your lack of popularity? Not that you give a good crap what us peons, the citizens of the USA thin.

  14. Curlew says:

Cheney’s approval rating is about 29 percent in this poll (it was 18 percent not long ago). Chimpy’s approval rating hovers around 30 percent. Curiously 30 percent of the American public watches Fixed Noise Channel for their primary news source. Think there’s a relationship?

  15. jb says:

Too bad Harry Whittington doesn’t drink as much or just a more careful person.

Nothing I have to add will affect the political, historical, or philosophical discussion on this topic…

Dick Cheney is the absolute worst example of a human being this planet could ever hope to create. He is the most opportunistic, greedy, self-absorbed, power hungry, power mad individual a republic could ever hope to produce…

    …until the next one.

Seriously, he is the most suckiest suck of the most sucky administration to ever suck suckititude.

    Suck it, Dick.

  21. Cal Malenky says:

Fortunately for him, he likely won’t be around in 20-30 years to find out.

  22. trollsbwild says:

He knows the reason for the hatred, but in reality, Dick doesn’t give a sh*t. His net worth has gone from approx. $29 mil in 2000 to what in 2008? $100-$200 million? Just don’t call it war profiteering.

  23. greenpagan says:

Maybe that’s why they kicked him out of Yale… twice!

  25. ralph the wonder llama says:

I find quite amusing the right-wing strawman about people “who govern according to polls”.

It’s a cynical attempt to paint unpopularity as heroic, and popular politicians who serve the public’s interest (read: Democrats) as pandering pantywaists afraid of making “tough decisions”.

Cheney doesn’t realize that overall approval ratings are based not on individual decisions, but rather on long-established public perception, largely influenced by the disastrous turns on which this administration has taken this country.

    Basically, he’s full of shit.

And the crap about having no idea why he’s unpopular? Just more Republican lionization of Ignorance.

  26. woodguy says:

He said recently, “I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road…”

Can’t argue with that–with any luck at all they’ll both be dead by then; a very good look, indeed.

  27. greenpagan says:

Cheney and Rumsfeld are (hopefully) the last of the Nixon Curse.

    Farewell Putsch/Chicanery.

(I guess they’re both a lot richer now than they were before they stole the 2000 Election, left the country wide open to attack on 9/11 and waged aggression against a sovereign nation–a war crime–to gain excessive ill-gotten war profits for themselves and their cronies and wet their beaks in the Iraqi oil patch.)

The American People are such sentimental rubes hayseeds and suckers. Bush/Cheney probably will look a lot better 30 years from now. Bad guys like them always do. Depending on who writes the histories of course.

That’s putting an awful lot of faith in nostalgia, ain’t it?

I mean, after all, it’s been thirty years since disco, and THAT doesn’t look very good in retrospect.

  30. curious says:

You don’t know why no one likes you? Well let’s see if we can figure it out. Your a war monger. A war profiteer. Your a liar, you are corrupt and the real thing when it comes to evil. Evil is a concept that is not thought of often these days. But sometimes it does fit. Sometimes it is the only word you can use to describe someone or something as an end product of evil.

You have shown no empathy, no compassion for your fellow human beings. You have committed treason, you have tried to destroy the Constitution in the process. You have been arrogant, greedy and uncaring in your dealings with others. You also have a foul mouth and your personal crudeness of mind and speech is there for all to see and hear.

You are a sick piece of work. And you and Bush came together in some dark symbiotic relationship that allowed both of you to do the unthinkable. Separately you might not have had the power to do what has been done. But sometimes fate throws a curve ball, and two entities meet and match that should never have met. Like recognizing like. And worst of all, you don’t see it. Like most Republican neocons, you see nothing past your own interests and those of your friends.

You are the height of selfishness and cruelty. You help to cause pain and devastation for others, while you stand outside without being touched by what you do.

This is why no one likes you.

  31. thomthum says:

Easy for him to say. He won’t be the guy cleaning up behind this circus elephant of an administration.

If he’s right and these are indeed looked back at as the “good old days”, boy are we in trouble.

    Goodnight Dick

I’m going to have to give dickie credit for this one.

Satan will explain to Dick how proud he is of him and he did a hellava job welcome. Then Nixon, Hitler, Stalin even Saddam can greet him in hell and show him around. Satan doesn’t discriminate either so Connie will be right at home. No need for a coat or sweater as it’s hot as hell in hell.

  38. Midland says:

Cheney’s the kind of politician the constitution was supposed to protect us against. We haven’t seen the like since Aaron Burr got out of town ahead of a noose. He makes Cromwell look like a moderate and Rodrigro Borgia look like a patriot.

Arrogance, cyncism, and too close-minded to even begin to understand the harm he has done to his country.

  39. had enough says:

In times of need, especially after looking at Cheney I go here and the shock, horrors and nausea vanishes.

  40. spyder says:

Well i am sure Dick thinks he will be vindicated when the US becomes a totally fascist militarized state (his perfect dream) and builds shrines to its corporate overlords (the Energy and Water companies) and memorials to Dick and friends who opened the portals for this wave of tyrants and neo-feudal lords of capital.

  49. Tired of being lied to says:

Thus proving what most of us already suspected: Cheney is self-centered, amoral, ego maniac, who has no idea (nor care) about what he does, how it affects others, or how others react to what he does.

The proper term for this condition is psychopath or sociopath: A person with an antisocial personality disorder, manifested in aggressive, perverted, criminal, or amoral behavior without empathy or remorse.

Mr. Cheney could be the poster child for this. And he should be institutionalized, preferably in a prison somewhere far away for a very long time.

  52. Morgan423 says:

Chaney quote from above: “I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road in light of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”

I agree with Chaney here. He along with the rest of the Bush administration will serve for decades as a fine example of what we can never afford to elect into office again, lest we destroy our country by doing so.

People don’t keep history in mind long enough to avoid repeating it, unfortunately, but people will remember this evil, evil cadre for a long time to come. Hopefully, it will be a very long time before we have to experience anything like a Bush administration again. But it’s terrible that the price of this future reminder is so high.

Cheney is still holding out hope, however, that the polls will turn his way. He said recently, “I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road in light of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”

Since it is always the victorious who write history, it is entirely possible–probable; indeed, inevitable–that in 20 or 30 years the Busheviks WILL be highly regarded and warmly remembered, for either/both of two reasons: 1) Things will have deteriorated to such an extent in the interim that their regime will seem to have been ‘happpy times,’ and/or 2) Their ‘agenda’ will have proven the durable model of the future performance of the subsequent regimes the Bosses insall: that is, they will have ‘won,’ and Bushe will be admired for having begun the contest…

But, yes, in 30 years, if the Nation survives, there is a very good chance that the Boosh regime will be warmly remembered, despite our current feelings and understandings…

  58. ElBruce says:

If he doesn’t “follow polls,” then he’s got no basis whatsoever for claiming they’ll eventually improve. Sorry Dick, you don’t follow polls, so you’re not even an informed layman on the subject. Maybe if you had some slight idea what the polls said, you could pontificate on what they’ll say later on.

    Some more comedy from Dick:

“There comes a time when deceit and defiance must be seen for what they are. At that point, a gathering danger must be directly confronted. At that point, we must show that beyond our resolutions is actual resolve.”

“It will be necessary for us to be a nation of men, and not laws.”

“The Middle East, with two-thirds of the world’s oil and lowest cost, is still where the prize ultimately lies.”

(Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid might have paid more attention to these nuggets.)

“We will, in fact, be greeted as liberators.”
    (an oldie but a goodie)

“The days of looking the other way while despotic regimes trample human rights, rob their nations’ wealth, and then excuse their failings by feeding their people a steady diet of anti-Western hatred are over.”(if you take his constant disdane for average citizens as “anti-Western hatred” we can assume that he is being introspective here)

“There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction.”

Ah Dick, the question most patriotic Americans ask is not how you and your pet will be perceived in 50-100 years it is whether you and Chimpy will die in prison or in exile.

  62. tokinwhiteguy says:

“I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road in light of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”

I think the issue is not how good he will look, it’s a question of if anyone will even remember him.

Seriously… off the top of your head, could you name the VPOTUS under Gerald Ford?? A little easy…

Let’s go back farther, how about under Herbert Hoover? William McKinley? Anyone want to take a stab at Benjamin Harrisons’ VP, anyone??

I think we all can take slight consolation in knowing that Cheney will become all but wasted ink in our history books as he fades into obscurity.
