Fox News allows ‘magic negro’ New Year’s message to be broadcast.

Throughout last night’s New Year’s eve broadcast, Fox News Channel allowed viewers to send in New Year’s greetings and wishes via text message. The messages were then scrolled across the bottom of the screen, replacing Fox’s normal crawling news headlines. While most messages were cordial, Fox allowed at least one racist message directed toward President-elect Obama to be broadcast. The message referenced Rush Limbaugh’s “Barack the Magic Negro” song:

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET’S HOPE THE MAGIC NEGRO DOES A GOOD JOB. LOVE JEN AND JOHN C.

I am hoping for the day that Fox “News” will no longer be on my cable system so when I pay my cable bill I won’t be bitter each month knowing that some of my money is going to this racist Pravda station.

Their ratings are in free fall and like a cornered animal, expect them to get more desperate (and even more offensive), but revel in the fact that their time of any sort of success and relevance is ending,

And that will be a Magical Day

Someone has to divert attention from Bush’s massive Corporafornication as his nefarious term winds our country backwards to the Gilded Age. A magic negro is just the ticket.

Pay no attention to the fat man behind the curtain, otherwise known as Roger Ailes.

  13. delafield says:

I pulled the plug on my TV set a few months after George W. Bush was installed in the White House. I was fed up with the Corporate Media’s attempts to force feed Bush’s lies down my throat.

Thank God that Ruppert Murdoch didn’t get his Kosher hands on the BBC. That would have been a huge blow to journalism.

  14. ElBruce says:

If they keep this up, I may have to start watching. Hear that FOX? I want insane, blatantly racist rants 24/7. When I’m channel flipping, give me one of those blonde chicks you got wearing blackface and tapdancing. While arguing for conservatism. And try to get the word “negro” on the screen as much as possible.

It’s a guaranteed ratings winner AND makes the right wing look classy to boot! Can’t miss!

  17. Gregor Samsa says:

I still say this is a good thing.

The more people associate conservatism with overt racism, the less likely they will be to lend support to conservative causes.

The GOP, their political allies, and their mouthpieces (like FauxNews) need to be relegated into irrelevancy; they are obviously all too happy to help bring about their own demise.

  18. normalasf says:

Isn’t this the same outfit that ‘accidentally’ called him Osama during all of 2008? Color me suprised.

  19. pete says:

What the Reichwhiners at FAUX fail to understand is: Oppressors don’t decide what is oppressive. Abusers don’t decide what’s abusive. Children don’t decide what is childish. Racists don’t decide what is racist. Criminals don’t decide what constitutes a crime and morons don’t decide what is stupid.

All of those distinctions are left to sane adults with normal sensibilities, intelligence, and morality. There isn’t a single Reichwing voice at FAUX who fits that description.

  20. Pete Tagliani says:

Interesting conundrum. If Fox apologizes, they will be admitting that the term “Magic Negro” is offensive. I don’t know if they can bring themselves to do that, since O’Reilly is already on record as not finding the term mean-spirited.

FoxNews has painted itself into the corner. They’ve embraced and encouraged ignorant heckling at the expense of rational discourse. They can try to distance themselves from it now, but they would alienate a great deal of their loyal viewers.

Or they can continue their descent, as they become the cable news equivalent of a truckstop bathroom wall covered with the graffiti of a thousand drive-by idiots.

  21. Gregor Samsa says:

Also obviously, all the babble spewed by conservatives during the Bush year about respecting the president blah blah blah, and that no criticism was allowed during a time of war blah blah blah, was not true. It. Was. Not. True.

Conservatives only respect the office of the president -and the president himself- if the person in the White House is a Republican. Everyone else can expect, well, anything. Including racial slurs. Hypocrites.

  22. celtic cynic says:

Now, boys and girls, be sure and to tune in to Fox News and Fox Radio 24/7/365 to see what outrageous crap they spew next.

Wake up, America. You’re being played like a cheap fiddle.

  23. gummitch says:

Compared to some of the vicious, ignorant and bigoted comments I’ve seen on a number of blogs, this is pretty tame. Jen and John clearly think they’re witty. The commenters on a lot of other blogs I’ve seen (and not just wingnut blogs, but a lot of media blogs) are consumed with hatred. As Gregor Samsa points out, all that “respect the office” crap they’ve been spewing was a dirty lie — just as we always knew.

  24. Dirty Hippie says:

Happy New Year Jen and John C.

I was a ready to quit a care-giving job because the woman had Fox news blaring on Saturday and televangelists on Sunday. She died in her sleep from a stroke before I gave notice. This was during the Countdown to War with Iraq, which was the one of the most obscene things I have ever seen. It made me physically ill. Fox news is simply viscerally hateful, and it appeals to a viscerally hateful audience that wants to see all its imagined enemies destroyed. It is pathological programming.

I’d like to see it go down like Rwanda radio stations did after the Tutsi/Hutu massacres. It is anti-social propaganda.

Please people end this obsession with FOX News.

Okay, so if wingnuts want us to ignore Faux News, there must be a good reason to focus on it.

You don’t know how to perform the “Briar Patch” trick do ya, Prod?

I know your man won the election, but we are OK with Obama, he likes wiretaping, he likes Rick Warren, he will allow torture and he won’t try and prosecute Bush or Cheney.

Then why all the alarmist rhetoric about how he was a “socialist” during the campaign? Do you mean you guys LIED to the American people?

By the way, that’s a pretty short and pathetic laundry list of priorities you guys got there. Let’s run it down:

    Curtailing of civil liberties: CHECK

Embrace of hatred disguising itself as “Christian love”: CHECK

    Torture: CHECK

Allowing crimes to go unpunished (as long as they’re committed by the “right people”): CHECK

You really do yourself and your side proud.

    PS

Funny how Obama was going to herald the end of the world as we knew it, until conservatives found ways to twist their little minds into thinking he is an ok guy. Goes to show congruency and consistency of thought are not a conservative’s forte.

  33. stateofthedivision says:

As for those “thousand drive by idiots”, some have plans. Jerry Falwell Jr. has his eye on taking over the local government in Lynchburg, Virginia. How? By registering the thousands of Liberty University students to vote and busing them to the polls in May for local elections.

The Borg could well be singing the Magic Negro song as they march to the voting booth.

  34. Zooey says:

Ewww, there’s a Jerry Falwell Jr?

  36. Gregor Samsa says:

Faux News airs a racial slur targeting the president of the US.

Is our conservative visitor outraged and demanding respect to the office or the person of the President?

    Of course not.

Thanks for illustrating my point oh so clearly, Proud.

  37. Imichael says:

I think its hillarious. This is all they have in their arsenal. Its like the kid calling you names while running away from you. I love it when some old white guy says he watches FoxNoise and then I can’t help myself but to lay into him. I just mention BillO and Hannity and they become quiet.

  38. MapleStreet says:

I see 3 possibilities. One is that they had someone watching what was sent in, choosing to allow – or not – and that person let it through.

I see a possibility that someone inside Faux put the message in, again, an intentional event.

But somehow, I suspect that if Faux addresses this at all, that they will try to say that they had, in a total lack of responsibility, and incoming box and anything that was sent in was automatically televised. But, of course, what is the probability that any reputable network (I know they aren’t reputable) would, by any stretch of the imagination, allow an open access from the outside to what they are broadcasting ?

I can see it now, Faux would be scrolling Make Money Fast, Nigerian 419 scams, offshore male enhancement drugs, etc.

(or is that what they air anyway ????)

  39. stateofthedivision says:

For more on Jerry Falwell Jr.’s drive to register students to vote:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/14/AR2008091402316.html

Contrast this with the warning to Virginia Tech students that they might lose scholarships and health insurance for voting in the same election. Republicans are behind both schemes.

  40. Gregor Samsa says:

    Proud babbles:
I will show Obama the same level of respect that you all have shown to Pres. Bush

Utter failure to live up to their own standards -another conservative quality.

  41. MapleStreet says:

Tangential Question: As Limbaugh, et al, refer to the current recession / depression as the Obama recession,

do they also refer to the decrease of American deaths in Iraq as the Obama Iraq influence ?

  42. Gregor Samsa says:

    Proud jaw-droppingly babbles:
I do understand that anything that anybody says negative about Obama will be construed as racist no matter how benign it may be.

Right. Because the n-word is such a benign and un-racist word. Right.

Parallel reality -where conservative pinheads like Proud live and thrive.

  43. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Proud Says:

If any of you were not aware there are buttons on both the remote control and the TV itself that actually change the channel.

So, what you’re saying is that if we don’t like what’s on our TV, we’re free to change the channel? It’s that’s the case, then why is the right-wing so obsessed with sex on TV? If it offends them, let them change the channel. No one has any right to inoffensive TV programming. Their only “right” is the right to not watch.

On the other hand, in case you didn’t notice, the kind of programming and “information presentation” on Fox News Channel (which has way too many viewers to be doing our country any good) is precisely the kind of thing TP is against. They are merely telling us what our conservative friends and neighbors are being told by Fox.

  44. gummitch says:

    Proud Says:

Hey Gregor, I will show Obama the same level of respect that you all have shown to Pres. Bush.

In that case, I assume you’ll hold off on the criticism and snotty comments until he’s clearly demonstrated that he’s incompetent, vacant, and a shill for corporate interests. Then it would definitely be appropriate to be disrespectful.

Of course, “conservatives” have been proclaiming for the last eight years that the very office of the President needs to be treated with utmost respect.

  45. dasm says:

Proud: “anything that anybody says negative about Obama will be construed as racist no matter how benign it may be.”

Proud, like a great many Republicans, is feigning innocence, pretending that the word “negro” is benign & not racist. This shows yet again the irrelevance in 2009 of the Republican party, whose members simply cannot look to a positive future in the world, instead relying on their ignorant, bigoted past– something they simply do not want to give up.

  46. pete says:

The Chimperror was given carte blanch, in the wake of 9/11, and he failed to catch Bin Laden then invaded a country that didn’t do us any harm. I needn’t even mention the economy, politicizing of the DOJ, contempt for oversight, etc.

In short, it’s not the ideology I abhor, it’s the results. Sadly, the Reichwhiners have already announced their intention to thwart President Obama regardless of intent or results. Spanking them in two consecutive elections is not enough. They need to be eliminated and have their seed banished from the earth.

  47. ElBruce says:

The noteworthy thing is that somebody must have approved the messages sent in. I mean, it’s not like they’d accidentally allow the F-word to appear on their screen. Whoever was approving messages for display had no problem whatsoever with that one.

Now you could say, “OK, somebody working there made a mistake,” and they’ll probably fire that person anyway. But this is the same channel on which Bill O’Reilly was saying he couldn’t understand why anyone thought the “magic negro” song was even “mean-spirited,” much less racist. So they’re actually broadcasting not only the term in a variety of unrelated contexts, but broadcasting opinions defending its use in any context. As such, it can’t be viewed as an unrelated “mistake.”

It is the de facto editorial policy of FOX News channel that the term “magic negro” may and even should be repeated at will, in any context whatsoever.

Maybe they should go all the way and make FOX News the official N-word channel, all day, every day. I’m sure if they use that one enough people will stop taking offense to it.

  48. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Proud Says:

Hey Gregor, I will show Obama the same level of respect that you all have shown to Pres. Bush.

On behalf of the regular posters here, I can promise you, Proud, that if and when President Obama shows the same level of disrespect for our Constitution and the Office of the President that Bush has already shown, we will show him the same level of respect we’ve shown Still-President Bush.

I do understand that anything that anybody says negative about Obama will be construed as racist no matter how benign it may be.
Then you do not understand it at all. Your problem is that when you see someone like President-Elect Obama, you see a black man who happens to be the next president. When we look at him, we see the next president who happens to be black. There’s a difference there that I just don’t think you and the Bill O’Reilly’s of the world understand yet. But I am hopeful that one day you will.

  49. gummitch says:

But I am hopeful that one day you will.

I think one of the things that has distressed Republicans and “conservatives” the most about Obama is that he is a genuinely intelligent, thoughtful and likeable person and presents about the most vivid contrast to W it’s possible to imagine. As such, he’s a sign that they have failed to crush the liberal spirit as they’ve claimed to have done for years.

And with comments like this person’s, they’re trying to lay the groundwork for a constant barrage of criticism by claiming that any response is “PC” and should be dismissed.

  50. ElBruce says:

    Proud Says:

Hey Gregor, I will show Obama the same level of respect that you all have shown to Pres. Bush.

OK, you do what we did: give him a chance to do a decent job. If there’s a great crisis, stand behind him and hope for the best. And if he completely screws over the U.S.A, engages in massive illegal activity, lies to start wars, pisses on everything we ever thought America stood for, and destroys the American and world economy, then you can say whatever you want about him.

    It’s a deal.

    .

    Proud Says:

I do understand that anything that anybody says negative about Obama will be construed as racist no matter how benign it may be.

Actually, we just construe the racist attacks as racism.

Lots of people on the left, right and middle have perfectly valid issues and disagreements with Obama, and nobody’s calling those racist at all. The left has a problem with his FISA vote and letting Rick Warren participate in the inauguration – nobody says those criticisms are racist. The right would prefer a less progressive tax structure and is concerned that government overspending may not generate sustainable economic growth – that’s not racist either.

The fact that you can’t see the difference between such forms of valid criticism and gleefully tossing offensive terms around means that yeah, you’re probably racist.

I have seen the argument by right wingers that this is just parody. Norman Lear was brought up, along with others in the realm of comedy. What the right wingers seem to miss is these people do not set policy for ALL. Elected officials and those involved in the running of our government were not put in place to tell us jokes or do stand up, they were put in place to govern ALL OF US! Not just those that voted for them. When someone who is supposed to represent ALL OF US dips below the line it is not parody, it is a betrayal. If they want to be comedians, let them change careers.

  99. ElBruce says:

    John Kerry Says:

Sorry but this is NOT Rush’s song! It was done by Paul Shanklin who took the name made up by a BLACK brotha columnist from Calif!

    More lib lies!

Everyone here is perfectly aware of the genesis of the term, apparently more than you. It was originally a literary criticism term, referring to stories in which a black guy with magical wisdom or powers shows up just to help the white hero. The term intentionally is coined to point out the racist undertones of such stories. David Ehrenstein was pointing out that Obama seems to be fulfilling that archetype in the minds of many white voters – a vaguely interesting but unprovable point.

From the LA Times article in question:

The Magic Negro is a figure of postmodern folk culture, coined by snarky 20th century sociologists, to explain a cultural figure who emerged in the wake of Brown vs. Board of Education. “He has no past, he simply appears one day to help the white protagonist,” reads the description on Wikipedia

Here’s where y’all got stupid: Paul Shanklin lifted the term only, and started using it an a completely different context. As long as you’re talking about the original context, the term is appropriate. Once you lift it to singing about purported jealousy by Al Sharpton, you’re not actually using the term any more, you’re just saying “negro” because you think it’s funny.

Let me make that point clear: if you’re talking about the use of the “magic negro” archetype in a novel or film in order to criticize it, that’s OK. If you’re using the fact that such a term exists to run around referring to real people as negroes, you’re being racist.

So next, Rush played the song on his show, which is to be expected from him.

Not content to have a few boorish asses flaunting their racism, the right wing didn’t stop there – Chip Saltsman started distributing it in his bid for RNC chair. That’s where it crossed the line from private citizens being boorish to the Republican Party putting its stamp of approval on boorishness.

But you guys didn’t even stop there. Now FOX News is doing their “let’s let that slip through the cracks like it was an accident” game. And even you are here defending the intentional misuse and overuse of the term.

Why are you doing this? Because it’s accurate? No, it’s not. Because it’s funny? It’s only funny if you think that thinking you have an excuse to say “negro” out loud is funny, which would be racist. There’s no other reason to do so.

Let’s try another scenario – the NAACP hasn’t changed its name. Does that mean that wingnuts should normally go around talking in public about colored politicians, colored interests and colored voters? No. Just as some terms aren’t appropriate at all, some are only appropriate within specific contexts.

In the interests of keeping abreast of current news, here’s a recntly released poll, that purports to show the military’s view of Obama – while finally noting that the polling is biased:

2008 Military Times poll: Wary about Obama

    Troops cite inexperience, Iraq timetable
By Brendan McGarry – Staff writer
    Posted : Thursday Jan 1, 2009 11:06:56 EST

When asked how they feel about President-elect Barack Obama as commander in chief, six out of 10 active-duty service members say they are uncertain or pessimistic, according to a Military Times survey.

In follow-up interviews, respondents expressed concerns about Obama’s lack of military service and experience leading men and women in uniform.

“Being that the Marine Corps can be sent anywhere in the world with the snap of his fingers, nobody has confidence in this guy as commander in chief,” said one lance corporal who asked not to be identified.

For eight years, members of the U.S. military have served under a Republican commander in chief who reflected their generally conservative views and led them to war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Now, the troops face change not only at the very top of the chain of command, as Obama nears his Jan. 20 inauguration, but perhaps in mission, policy and values.

Underlying much of the uncertainty is Obama’s stated 16-month timetable for pulling combat troops out of Iraq, as well as his calls to end the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy to allow gays to serve openly in the military, according to survey responses and interviews.

“How are you going to safely pull combat troops out of Iraq?” said Air Force 1st Lt. Rachel Kleinpeter, an intelligence officer with the 100th Operations Support Squadron at RAF Mildenhall, England. “And if you’re pulling out combat troops, who are you leaving to help support what’s left? What happens if Iraq falls back into chaos? Are we going to be there in five years doing the same thing over again?”

When asked who has their best interests at heart — Obama or President George W. Bush — a higher percentage of respondents picked Bush, though Bush has lost ground over time. About half of the respondents said Bush has their best interests at heart this year, the same percentage as last year but a decline from 69 percent in 2004.

Nearly one-third of respondents — including eight out of 10 black service members — said they are optimistic about their incoming boss.

Even some service members who voted against Obama — only 1 in 4 supported him over Sen. John McCain in a pre-election survey of Military Times subscribers —now express goodwill toward him as their new commander in chief.

“Overall, the prospect of having someone who isn’t necessarily tied to old strategies is a good thing,” said Air Force Master Sgt. David Ortegon, who said he voted for McCain. “Sometimes you need a fresh perspective to be able to handle our military readiness and the needs of the nation.”

The findings are part of the sixth annual Military Times survey of subscribers to Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times newspapers. This year’s survey, conducted Dec. 1 through Dec. 8, included more than 1,900 active-duty respondents.

The responses are not representative of the opinions of the military as a whole. The survey group overall under-represents minorities, women and junior enlisted service members, and over-represents soldiers.

But as a snapshot of the professional corps, the responses highlight the challenges Obama faces as he prepares to take command of military careerists with different political and cultural attitudes.

In keeping with previous surveys, nearly half of the respondents described their political views as conservative or very conservative. Slightly more than half said they consider themselves Republicans, 22 percent independents and 13 percent Democrats.

So, another cherished canard falls. Wingnuts have been using this poll for years as proof that members of the military overwhelmingly supported Bush, and his interventionist foreign policies, but now MT decides to let the cat out, and admit they oversample selected portions to achieve their result.

It calls into question the veracity, and utility of such a slanted poll.

The song belongs to Rush every bit as much as the “Friends” theme song (”I’ll Be There For You”) belongs to “Friends”. Sure, it’s by the Rembrandts, but it belongs to Chandler, Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel and Ross.
