Reports suggest Israeli forces using cluster bombs in Gaza.
Haaretz reports that, as Israeli ground forces entered Gaza yesterday, “hundreds of shells were fired, including cluster bombs aimed at open areas.” FireDogLake’s Siun writes, “The use of cluster bombs — which have a large footprint when initially dropped and then remain a threat for decades — in a location like the Gaza Strip which is so packed with people is horrifying.” (FDL notes that video footage seems to confirm the use of cluster bombs.) Last summer, a former Israeli defense official said that “the Israeli military used cluster bombs for two weeks during the 2006 Lebanon war without telling the Israeli government.” At the time, the UN decried the use of the bombs as “completely immoral.”
(Note: The photo shows Israeli forces dropping white phosphorus shells, which “can cause horrific burns but is not illegal if used as a smokescreen.”)
Update An Israeli soldier was killed in a gunbattle with Gaza militants today, the first since Israel launched its ground operation. "In addition to the fatality, 31 Israel Defense Forces soldiers have been wounded, three of them seriously." Gaza medical personnel said a woman and four of her children were among the 35 Palestinians killed during an Israeli ground operation today. Meanwhile, "Palestinian terrorists continued their bombardment of southern Israel, firing some 41 rockets and mortar shells since Sunday morning."
Update The Bush administration blocked approval of a U.N. Security Council statement calling for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Gaza.

That said, much of what I read on this site regarding Operation Cast Lead is typical one-sided rhetoric. Equating the situation in Gaza with the Holocaust is hyperbole and disgraceful. Israel is NOT aiming to exterminate all Palestinians. European Jews in Nazi-occupied lands didn’t invite the slaughter by shelling Germans.
The only humane end to the situation is for Palestinians to renounce Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The actions of a few are causing the suffering of many.

The picture shows what appears to be artillery shells which shower a cloud of sub munitions across a wide area. The thick white smoke suggests “white phosphorus”. Whether the white phosphorus is being used as an incendiary device or it’s the detonator for the “bomblets” is unclear. To use either one on civilians is horrendous.

Well, count me a Hamas defender, then. I don’t support killing them – I support negotiating with them. Hamas is not a monolith and it’s not a cartoon supervillain. It’s a political party with its own factions and divisions, and though it has its share of radical nutjobs, it also has rational actors who will be willing work towards a solution.

Hey D-Lee, If a solution is what you want, then perhaps we should have a two state solution. Hamas’ roots are a Zionist creation, and the Eastern European origins of modern Israel indicate it really shouldn’t be in that territory, but with that said, the only solution is to get everyone together and ask what they all want. Fact 1:
Gaza is occupied by terrorists, and their supporters
(wives, children, relatives, old folks etc).
I call them supporters because these silly fools refuse to distance themselves from their friends and spouses who are doing terrorist acts. If you knew your redneck neighbour was making bombs, would you still hve coffee with him?
Fact 2:
The daring Gazan men will resort to weapons and violence.
The not-so-daring ones will still spiritually support their actions and will never condemn any acts of violence.
Even if a Muslim kills the US president, other Muslims worldwide will just keep quiet and will not condemn. Y’see….Muslims are all the same, regardless of country of origin and social background.
I am from Malaysia…I know.
Fact 3 :
In short, everyone in Gaza are terrorists….directly or indirectly, consciously or sub-consiously.
They all have hatred for Israel and other whitemen,especially the Americans.
Fact 4:
You wanna kill a hornet’s nest, you must kill em all.
This military action will result in many Gazan survivors becoming future terrorsits and suicide bombers. It fuels hatred. Before, the Gazan muslims were already extremists with deviant beliefs. Now,with the bombing, they will go crazy. We must flatten Gaza.
Fact 5:
Israel is not stupid.
Israel knows the rockets will still be coming in.
Israel knows it’s impossible to target just the Hamas, who’re hiding amongst their families and underground,
The solution is simple, and happening now….Israel is systematically and slowly destroying the Gaza Strip daily.
Fact 6:
Ever realised that most terrorists in the world are mostly Muslim, who like to use Allah as an excuse/explanation for everything?
My conclusion is simple:

More than a million people live in Gaza, but only a few thousand rockets, bombs and mortar bombs were used by Palestinians from Gaza.

If there are lots of extremists and terrorists making rockets in Washington DC, I am sure Americans or any sane, logical human-being will quickly report this matter, distance themselves from these fanatics, where the authorities can easily apprehend these Allah-chanting Muslim psychos.
However, in Gaza, the Hamas appears to have the fully support from the Gaza civilians. The Hamas people are living and hiding amongst the civilians.
The civilians have never showed signs of hating the Hamas or wanting to isolate themselves from Hamas.
If Muslims have any brains (I think they don’t), all the so-called “civilians” should gather and march to a safer, single location and tell Hamas members
“PLS DON’T COME NEAR US. wE DON’T WANT TO DIE BECAUSE OF YOU, HAMAS!!!!!”. All “innocent” women shd come out and wave white sheets and march to a single unified location where they won’t be bombed like flies.
Sadly, because all Muslims are basically alike and support each other very closely, the above did not happen.
That’s why Hamas and the “civilians’ are becoming butchered by the bombings, because they fuindamentally believe in terrorism, and in supporting terrorism. Gaza civilians and Hamas are actually the same thing.
Israel shd use FAEs (especially the MOAB) in huge numbers to just flatten this extremist, troublesome, unproduction place called Gaza. Kill everyone there.

Hamas always lament and complain about the Israeli blckade.
The blockade appears to piss Hamas off.
If Washington was blockaded, I would be darn pissed too!!
But I will ask: Why was the blockade implemented?
Israel intimately knows the fanatical, extremist, tightly united nature of the Palestinians and any Muslims.
The blockade serves to “control” these wild animals within a barrier so that they could not do much harm.
It’s a control measure.
Sadly even with the blockade, these Palestinians fanatics still manage to dig hundreds of tunnels and ultimately, even fabricate their own rockets!!!
See how united they are, and how fanatical they are?
Even sadder, when a women knows her husband or neighbour makes rockets and lunaches them at a neighbouring region, these ‘civilians” still remain passive.
That’s why, I maintain that Israel shd not differentiate between Hamas and civilians. They are the same, and one.
