Reid: ‘I really do believe President Bush is the worst president we’ve ever had.’

In early 2006, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said of President Bush: “I really do believe this man will go down as the worst president this country has ever had.” This morning on Meet the Press, host David Gregory asked Reid whether he regrets making that statement. Reid refused to back down. “I think you just have to call things the way you see them,” he said. “I really do believe President Bush is the worst president we’ve ever had.” Watch it:

Transcript:

GREGORY: Before you go, do you have any regrets about the way you have publicly battled with President Bush?

Over the years you’ve called him a liar, a loser, and you’ve described him as, quote, our worst president ever.

REID: I wrote a book and I said that in the book several times. David, I am who I am. I’m going to continue being who I am. I think you just have to call things the way you see them.

I really do believe that President Bush is the worst president we’ve ever had. I think his efforts to destroy Social Security were very bad. That brought about one of those statements.

I think, as we’ve looked, now, at what’s happened to the stock market, wouldn’t that have been an awful thing to do, to privatize Social Security?

Medicare — he’s done his very best to destroy Medicare, Medicare, a wonderful program. Perfect? Of course not, but one of the best programs ever developed to take care of sick people, so…

GREGORY: No regrets?

REID: Well, you know, I am just who I am.

UpdateWhite House Press Secretary Dana Perino issued a terse response to Reid's statement. "The Senate Majority Leader isn't really taken seriously," she said.

Reid will probably apologize by this time tomorrow.

  2. Zooey Says:

    That is SO true, Harry.

And you're the worst Democrat Senate Majority leader!

  3. McWars Says:

If you have to ask your fellow human if they regret concluding that George W. Bush is the worst president, you belong in the dustbin of history with the rest of them, not as moderator of meet the press.

You made your bed with picking Gregory, NBC. Now you must lie in it.

  4. LiberalVoter Says:

And Senator Reid, you have done a hecka of a job keeping the 'Worst President Ever' in check! PUKE.

  5. Another Joe Says:

moron - they took impeachment off the table, capitulated to everything - even when chimpy was the most unpopular president in US history...

reid and the dems have their own culpability in all of this - it's pretty easy to shoot your mouth out now after bringing all this terrible legislation to the floor, voting for virtually ALL of it, and refusing to hold anyone accountable for the criminality...

If dur chimpfurher is the worst president, surely we have had the worst congress for the last 2 years too.

  6. tarazan Says:

And Harry Reid will be called the worst compromising and complacent Senate Majority leader who was unable ,since he took over leadership of the Senate, to introduce and pass anything but toothless and unbinding resolutions against Bush.

  7. SP Biloxi Says:

Spare me.. Yes, it is true that the clown President is the worst President ever but Reid's hands isn't certainly clean. And he is ceetainly not the person to be judge, jury, executioner, and critic of Bush and Blago.

  8. Jackie Says:

Harry Reid has been in the White House's back pocket for 8 years. Now his illegal land deal was made public but he's done much more with his friends Bush/Cheney. Like Obama said check the voting record and Harry is George's best friend, now he's a turn coat to save his job. Reid is up for re election and the people of his State have his at a low 30 per cent in favor. So he's doing what he can to spin and ride the shirt tails of Obama/Biden. Reid has sold out the American people for big bucks. Look for more Bush suck ups to now turn against the Bush/Cheney Team. It's called every man/woman for themselves now. Don't think all the Democrats are clean. Pelosi get her kick back to keep the Impeachment off the Table, Diane Feinstein and Chuck Shumer got their pay off for quickly passing the AG through the confirmation. Reid needs to be replaced quickly he's stolen enough over the years.

  9. LiberalVoter Says:

So, where are the trolls letting us know they are impressed that we hold our own accountable? Probably wetting themselves because accountability of your own is beyond them.

If he is the worst president we've ever had (and I agree that he is) why are you so afraid to stand up to him, Reid?
Aren't you a former boxer, yourself?
Why are you so easily intimidated by the coward, Bush?

Why would we? Reid as a record as senate leader, that is fair game for criticism - but ragging on Obama before he's even taken office is another matter.

Will you have a moratorium on criticism of Obama, until there's something to actually judge?

That would also be a welcome surprise.

Worst Dem House and Senate leader? Tragically, yes.

Let history show that they, Reid and Pelosi, are both Co-conspirators to the darkest traitors this country has ever known. Equally willing, through appeasement and neglect to sell the Constitution down river.

There is something deeply pathological about Bush and Cheney and equally so about those who would enable their agenda of criminal intent and actions by taking accountability and Impeachment "off-the-table".

  38. ralph the wonder llama Says:

I'm not comfortable proclaiming Harry Reid "Worst Ever" Senate Majority Leader, as I don't have a clear idea how well most of the other men in that position have served throughout our history. There may well have been others who, in their moments, failed the nation more catastrophically than Harry Reid has in his.

But I will say this; Harry Reid has failed the nation. His reluctance to take on a disastrous president, even after that president lost any popular support, has cost this nation dearly, both in honor and in material prosperity.

Nancy Pelosi has been no better as Speaker.

That been said, neither comes close to the level of failure that George W. Bush has attained as president, nor to the level of damage inflicted on the people of this land.

Sometimes art is awful. You, consistently, are awful. Politics has nothing to do with it. Besides, why would you keep hoisting your "art" on an unappreciative public. http://www.suntimes.com/ news/ metro/ blagojevich/ 1360191,harry-reid-blagojevich-jesse-jackson-010209.article

I agree that Harry Reid is a miserable Senate Majority Leader, but I am not ready to brand him a racist based on a story out of a rag like the Sun Times.

My link of the article to the Sun Times is not to imply that Reid is a racist. Selling a Senate seat regardless of any race is simply plain wrong. I am simply implying the hypocrisy of Reid by getting on a soap box to criticize the clown President when Reid, himself, is not Mr. Clean. Nevertheless, Reid had no business poking his nose and being a decider on who gets Obama's vacate seat. But, I agree with you that Reid has not been a good Senate Majority Leader.

  109. ralph the wonder llama Says:

I hafta agree with Slappy here, Spacey. You're just not interesting anymore.

You seem to be trying to have it both ways. You get to say something demeaning (in a Mallard Fillmore kind of way, of course), attribute it to some imagined "God of the Universe" and then claim that you're not saying what you just said.

The only possible rationalization for your awkward construction is that you're attributing these foolish thoughts to a liberal mind that believes some imagined "God of the Universe" says these things, but your presentation is forced and inartful because no reasonable liberal believes anything close to the things you project on us. (Hence the very apt, in my view, Mallard Fillmore reference, as this is Bruce Tinsley's stock-in-trade.)

So let's review: you build these formulaic structures (not that formula is bad -- it can be very effectively employed in satire. Just the satire has to be clever) in which you embed absurd cartoon characterizations of your prejudicial view of liberals, you post them on a liberal blog, and then complain that liberals don't really "get" your stuff.

Sounds kind of disingenuous, Spacey. Or maybe just oblivious.

  166. ralph the wonder llama Says:

So let me see if I get Spacey's thinking correct:

Hitler was a "socialist" because he led the "National Socialist Party". Doesn't matter that he didn't promote socialistic policies, doesn't matter that he was in fact a nationalist authoritarian who oppressed minorities and expanded military control of government (all things opposed by true socialists). He said he was a socialist, and so that's that.

Yet Bush says he's a "compassionate conservative", and he is a Republican, so he must be conservative, right? That should be that.

But no. Apparently, Spacey judges these things on a sliding scale. For Even though George W. Bush has cut taxes for the wealthy, undercut protections for the environment, workers and consumers in favor of protecting corporations, even though he hasn't advanced a single policy that might in any reasonably accurate way be considered "socialistic", Spacey judges that, because the results of his very free-market fundamentalist policies have been to increase the size and influence of government, and to put the nation's economy into such a condition that the government itself is the only source for keeping it from crashing, this somehow makes him "leftist".

    So let's review:

Hitler -- didn't act like a socialist, but said he was -- thus, socialist

Bush -- didn't say he was a liberal, but acted like Spacey's cartoon version of one -- this, liberal.

    I think we're done here.

President Woodrow Wilson said in 1913, "Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had me's views confided in to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the U.S., in the field of commerce and manufacturing, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocking, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it."

Can you imagine an all powerful group, that knows no national boundaries, above the laws of all countries, one that controls every aspect of politics, religion, commerce and industry, banking, insurance, mining, the drug trade, the petroleum industry, a group answerable to no one but its members? To the vast majority of us, such a group would appear to be beyond the realms of possibilities and capabilities of any given organization. If that is what you believe, then you are in the majority. The conception of a secret, elite group exercising control of every aspect of our lives is beyond our comprehension. Americans are prone to say, "It can't happen here, our Constitution forbids it."

In fact, the opposite is true:

President Bush's success rating in the Democratic-controlled House has fallen this year to a half-century low, and he prevailed on only 14 percent of the 76 roll call votes on which he took a clear position.

So far this year, Democrats have backed the majority position of their caucus 91 percent of the time on average on such votes. That marks the highest Democratic unity score in 51 years.

    from yahoo:

President George W. Bush will leave behind a legacy of Bushisms, the label stamped on the commander in chief's original speaking style. Some of the president's more notable malaprops and mangled statements:

    ___

    • "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully." — September 2000, explaining his energy policies at an event in Michigan.

    • "Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?" — January 2000, during a campaign event in South Carolina.

    • "They misunderestimated the compassion of our country. I think they misunderestimated the will and determination of the commander in chief, too." — Sept. 26, 2001, in Langley, Va. Bush was referring to the terrorists who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks.

    • "There's no doubt in my mind, not one doubt in my mind, that we will fail." — Oct. 4, 2001, in Washington. Bush was remarking on a back-to-work plan after the terrorist attacks.

    • "It would be a mistake for the United States Senate to allow any kind of human cloning to come out of that chamber." — April 10, 2002, at the White House, as Bush urged Senate passage of a broad ban on cloning.

    • "I want to thank the dozens of welfare-to-work stories, the actual examples of people who made the firm and solemn commitment to work hard to embetter themselves." — April 18, 2002, at the White House.

    • "There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." — Sept. 17, 2002, in Nashville, Tenn.

    • "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." — Aug. 5, 2004, at the signing ceremony for a defense spending bill.

    • "Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country." — Sept. 6, 2004, at a rally in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

    • "Our most abundant energy source is coal. We have enough coal to last for 250 years, yet coal also prevents an environmental challenge." — April 20, 2005, in Washington.

    • "We look forward to hearing your vision, so we can more better do our job." — Sept. 20, 2005, in Gulfport, Miss.

    • "I can't wait to join you in the joy of welcoming neighbors back into neighborhoods, and small businesses up and running, and cutting those ribbons that somebody is creating new jobs." — Sept. 5, 2005, when Bush met with residents of Poplarville, Miss., in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

    • "It was not always a given that the United States and America would have a close relationship. After all, 60 years we were at war 60 years ago we were at war." — June 29, 2006, at the White House, where Bush met with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

    • "Make no mistake about it, I understand how tough it is, sir. I talk to families who die." — Dec. 7, 2006, in a joint appearance with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

    • "These are big achievements for this country, and the people of Bulgaria ought to be proud of the achievements that they have achieved." — June 11, 2007, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

    • "Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for your introduction. Thank you for being such a fine host for the OPEC summit." — September 2007, in Sydney, Australia, where Bush was attending an APEC summit.

    • "Thank you, Your Holiness. Awesome speech." April 16, 2008, at a ceremony welcoming Pope Benedict XVI to the White House.

    • "The fact that they purchased the machine meant somebody had to make the machine. And when somebody makes a machine, it means there's jobs at the machine-making place." — May 27, 2008, in Mesa, Ariz.

    • "And they have no disregard for human life." — July 15, 2008, at the White House. Bush was referring to enemy fighters in Afghanistan.

    • "I remember meeting a mother of a child who was abducted by the North Koreans right here in the Oval Office." — June 26, 2008, during a Rose Garden news briefing.

    • "Throughout our history, the words of the Declaration have inspired immigrants from around the world to set sail to our shores. These immigrants have helped transform 13 small colonies into a great and growing nation of more than 300 people." — July 4, 2008 in Virginia.

    • "The people in Louisiana must know that all across our country there's a lot of prayer — prayer for those whose lives have been turned upside down. And I'm one of them. It's good to come down here." — Sept. 3, 2008, at an emergency operations center in Baton Rouge, La., after Hurricane Gustav hit the Gulf Coast.

*I appreciate all the local and state officials who are here today. I particularly want to point out one person — Staff Sergeant John Forbess. I had the honor of meeting John at the base of Air Force One. He was severely wounded in a helicopter crash in Iraq in 2003. Yet, despite his wounds, he volunteers in the Fisher House.----

*Al Qaeda is greatly weakened since 2001. As a matter of fact, they at one point declared the most central front in the war on terror in Iraq — where they're doing very poorly. And they're not doing so well here, either. Now, they can hide in remote regions. They can hide, but we will stay on the hunt and we will keep the pressure on them, because it's in the people — the peaceful people of Afghanistan's interest, just like it's in the interest of this country.----
Dubya's last comment becomes confusing when you note that he was in Afghanistan at the time. Kabul, Afghanistan, Dec. 15, 2008

*Right after the attacks I made it abundantly clear that we would bring people to justice for our own security. And made it abundantly clear that if a group of people harbored a terrorist, they were equally as guilty as a terrorist. And we gave the Taliban an opportunity to respond. They didn't. And American troops proudly liberated the people of Afghanistan. That's what life was like. And we could have replaced one power person with another. That would have been, I guess, the easy route, and then just left it behind, say we've done our duty and we've upheld the doctrine — and said, okay, we're now going to take this group, replace them with this group — and just got out of the way. But that's not — that, one, didn't learn the lessons of the '80s and the '90s.----

*And it was here in Afghanistan that the terrorists planned the attacks of September the 11th, 2001. After that date, America gave the Taliban a choice: You can turn over the leaders of al Qaeda, or you can share in their fate. And when they refused, our just demands were enforced by the United States military. And thanks to you, the Taliban has gone from power, the al Qaeda training camps are closed, and 25 million Iraqis are free.----

*Let me talk about the guy throwing his shoe. It's one way to gain attention. It's like going to a political rally and having people yell at you. It's like driving down the street and having people not gesturing with all five fingers. I don't know what the guy's cause is.----
Really? Dubya oversees a lengthy, bloody war in Iraq, and he's wondering what cause an Iraqi journalist might be representing in his shoe-throwing protest? Baghdad, Iraq, Dec. 14, 2008

*The results of these efforts are unfolding slowly and unevenly, but there are encouraging signs. From Iraq and Afghanistan to Lebanon and Pakistan, voters defied the terrorists to cast their ballots in free elections. In places like Iraq's Anbar province, people have seen what life under the Taliban looks like — and they decided they want no part it — actually, it was life under al Qaeda looks like.----
At least he caught himself, West Point, New York, Dec. 9, 2008

*The battle in Iraq has been longer and more difficult than expected. Foreign terrorists, former regime elements, and Iraqi insurgents, often with outside support, combined to drive up violence, and bring the country to the verge of chaos. So we adopted a new strategy, and raather than retreating, sent more troops into Baghdad, in Iraq. And when the surge met its objective, we began to bring our troops home under a policy of return on success. Last week, Iraq approved two agreements that formalize diplomatic and economic and security ties with America, and set a framework for the drawdowing of American forces as the fight in Iraq nears a successful end. Fourth, America recognized the only way to defeat the terrorists in the long run is to present an alternative to their hite — hateful ideology. So when we overthoo the dictators in Afghanistan and Iraq, we refused to take the easy option and instill friendly strongmen in their place.----
Some interesting Dubya-only pronunciations, which may also explain the usage of "instill" instead of "install", West Point, New York, Dec. 9, 2008

*We also took a — hard look at the danger posed by Iraq, a country that combined support for terror, the development and the use of weapons of mass destruction, violence against its own people, aggression against its neighbors, hostility to the United States, and ss — systemic violation of United Nations resolutions.----
The White House transcript went with "systematic" — which would have been correct, even though it isn't what Dubya said. West Point, New York, Dec. 9, 2008

*We reorganized our intelligence community to better neet the needs of war against these terrorists, including increasing the number of intelligence officers.----Dubya creates a tongue twister for himself where most folks probably wouldn't have faltered, West Point, New York, Dec. 9, 2008

*We have captured or killed hundreds of al Qaeda leaders and operatives in more than two dozen countries — including the man who mastermined the 9/11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.-----
That's right: Not masterminded... mastermined. West Point, New York, Dec. 9, 2008

*I suspect there are reasons why George ran instead of Jeb back in 2000, along the lines of things Jeb would rather keep quiet about.

*Wasn't Noelle Bush's brush with the law over drugs just before 2000?

*Yes, poor thing. It wasn't a brush with drugs, it was felonious. I think she went to jail. She was prescription shopping, i think with intent to sell.

And then there's the wife bringing all that jewelry into the country and not declaring it.

Virginia Governor Is Named D.N.C. Chief

WASHINGTON — Gov. Tim Kaine, of Virginia, who was a top contender to be President-elect Barack Obama’s running mate, has been tapped by him to become the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Democrats familiar with the decision said Sunday.

Mr. Kaine will succeed Howard Dean as the party chairman when the party elects officers at its meeting here this month. By tradition, the committee defers to the choice of a sitting president.

Mr. Kaine was elected governor in 2005, but is barred by the state’s Constitution from seeking re-election. His term expires at the end of 2009. Mr. Obama’s associates said Mr. Kaine would serve as party chairman during his last year as governor, with an executive director running the day-to-day operations, an arrangement that is not unusual. At the end of his term, Mr. Kaine will work full time in his new position.

The decision by Mr. Obama was first reported by The Washington Post on its Web site on Sunday afternoon.

The Senate Majority Leader is not taken seriously? Really? No Dana my dear, YOU and the loser you work for are not taken seriously.

  209. tablogloid Says:

Bush, the worst U.S. Pres. in history
    Reid, the worst SML
Perino, the cutest Press Secretary ever.

  210. moondancer Says:

I agree with both statements. I'll add that Dana is the worst liar of all the liars that the liars of bushco used to lie to the American people. Loser liar working for the loser liars of the GOP? You may have a career as a writer for Fats Limbaugh...or maybe as flack for Fredo....

  211. tokin librul Says:

"The Senate Majority Leader isn't really taken seriously," she said.

    that part's true, unfortunately...

  212. slappy magoo Says:

Sorry, Mark701, as much as I loathe Perino and the boss for whom she shills, she's right, no one takes Reid seriously. Why should they? You may agree with his values and his politics but when it comes to take action, the jackass caves like a poorly-monitored coal mine. Listening him talk about ANY politicians lack of abilities is like listening to Paris Hilton opine over who is or is not Skankified.

  213. ElBruce Says:

I complain about Reid as much as anybody else, but I still have to say if a public official ever utters the words "The Senate Majority Leader isn't really taken seriously," in ANY administration in history, that pretty much proves you have no damn idea what you're talking about. Clearly she doesn't understand how the American government is structured. Perino is moving beyond the realm of mere lies into one of pure insanity.

Regarding the socialism practiced by the National Socialist party, it actually was based on extremely close working relationships between large privately-owned corporations and government. Sound familiar? It's basically neocon economic policy, running unopposed. Socialism as done in the USSR was based around labor organizing, which would be a precisely opposite approach.

  214. DwH Says:

Yeah, and Perino, you should know saomething about not being taken seriously. Ditto for your Frat Boy.

Screw you, Dana, and the fool you rode into town on. Get the * out of the White House.

  215. slappy magoo Says:

I'll amend my statement. While I don't disagree with Perino's statement (I don't think Reid is taken seriously, nor should he be until/unless he starts to show some backbone), it is something that a spokesperson for the White House shouldn't say, not should anyone within the White House, if the Administration expects to be taken seriously itself.

By now, Bush and his lickspittles should not only know how loathed they are, they should know WHY, and to counteract criticism with something of the "Yeah, well you suck too" variety only goes to prove how right Reid is in HIS criticism. But Reid's criticism would carry far more weight were it not uttered BY Reid, someone who continually enabled this Administration to live up to its complete potential of a-holishness. As we don't take Rove or Delay seriously when they're trotted out on television to talk about the culture of corruption and hyper-partisanship in modern politics, so too can I not take Reid as seriously as I would like when he talks about the incompetency of others.

  216. cliffstep Says:

Didn't someone once refer to politics as the art of the possible?
Would it have been possible to impeach Bush? Would half of the Republican senators have voted aye? Of course not. But it would have made the god, gays, and guns voters more aggressively defensive of their misguided ideas and their woefully inadequate prez. It would have made the past election much more difficult, and we might even be talking about VP Palin today.
Am I happy that some things that I would have liked to see get through congress didn't? Of course not , but , and I know this is an over-used statement , but 40 Rs could stop 51 Ds (and that's counting Lieberman) on anything.
So , in a couple of weeks we begin anew. Let's judge Reid and Pelosi then.
As for Bush , no one is preventing The Hague from coming after him and his co-conspiritors. Certainly not me.

Does Dopey the Dwarf REALLY believe he possesses "gravitas". Bush is arguably the worst president ever. He does have stiff competition from Carter. Dopey has no competition as the most flaccid senate majority leader of all time.

  220. drew3rd Says:

And ElBruce, I'm surprised at how thin skinned you are on this one. The Bush administartion is not the National Socialist Party(Nazi's) and Perino is correct in pointing out that Reid ISN'T taken seriously. He looks and acts like Snow White's Dopey dwarf, just not as endearing. Administrations have said all kinds of unkind things about their opponents historically. Have you watched former presidents Carter and Clinton imploding 200 hundred years of presidential tradition? Once again, I'm surprised at you, you are typically much more thoughtful and intellectually honest than this.

  221. shoeless Says:

I agree drew. The Bush administration are not fascists. At least fascists make the trains run on time. This gang is more like the Hun.

  222. tablogloid Says:

  224. chucko33 Says:

Of course, TP skips over the fact that a sitting Minority Leader (which Reid was at the time) called a sitting president a "loser," as David Gregory pointed out. For that, Reid should have been sorry, at least publicly. You know that the liberal blogosphere would have been up in arms if Mitch McConnell or someone else of his stature hurled this or similar insults toward a democratic president (ex. Jimmy Carter, or Bill Clinton). They, along with democratic leaders, would have demanded he apologize to the president, I'm sure. As far as Reid calling Bush a liar and worst president ever? That's fair game.

  228. Uranus Says:

Reid and Pelosi's collective failure to unseat Bush and Cheney is why I left the democratic party after 37 years. It's not too late to hold them to account; but, Reid for one won't do it, and he inserted a little codespeak in yesterday's Meet The Press:

SEN. REID: And finally, David, let me say this. Whatever program we have, let's not talk about the last eight years. Let's talk about the next eight years.

Sure, they were talking about economic stimulus and infrastructure repair, but his approach to holding the Bush administration to account is the same: move along, nothing to see here. Harry and Nancy are complicit in Bush and Cheney's crimes, and should burn along with them.

  229. EugeneDebs Says:
