Republican Senator: Blagojevich should appoint Moseley Braun instead of Burris.

Sen. Robert Bennett (R-UT) suggested that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) should appoint former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun (D) to Barack Obama’s open seat instead of Roland Burris:

030219_mosley-braun.jpg“She’s non-controversial, she has been here, she’s an African-American, she clearly has not been picked by the governor, and she would be appointed by virtue of her past history,” said Bennett, whose committee may soon consider Burris’s Senate appointment.

“Everyone would accept her,” Bennett said. “If she wanted to compete in the special election, she could. If Burris wanted to compete in the special election, he could.”

But the Republican added, “No one will listen to the idea and I don’t expect anything to come of it.”

Update Earlier today, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) broke with her party’s leadership in "calling for Roland Burris to be seated in the Senate once his paperwork is signed by the Illinois secretary of state."

Cheer up Senator, you’re on TP tonight, and we’ll do our best.

See? I kept saying that not EVERY Republican is an idiot, and none of you guys believed me.

I know, I know, there hasn’t been a lot of evidence to back me up lately.

  4. spencers mom says:

It’s so very nice of these GOPers to jump in with helpful suggestions, and so frequently at that! Because they were so open to the solutions proposed by the Democrats prior to their partial (now total) loss of power.

Having said that, Harry Reid needs to be sidelined. What a buffoon!

    PEACE

  5. EnnuiDivine says:

The only downsides to Mosely Braun (not counting Bennett’s apparent endorsement) are that she had allegations of corruption (it didn’t stick, but it hurt her chances for re-election) and that she lost her last two elections; for senator in 1998 and president in 2004. She likely would be defeated in 2010.

    – - I’m just wondering what the quid pro quo is between Burris and Blago because you just know there has to be.

  7. katy says:

but, but, i thought the problem was ANY appointment by this “tainted” governor…

  8. Zooey says:

“She’s non-controversial, she has been here, she’s an African-American, she clearly has not been picked by the governor….”

As soon as Blago appoints her, hun, she’s got the same problem as Burris.

Burris is non-controversial (except for that weird tomb thing). The problem is not the appointee, the problem is the appointer.

  9. katy says:

    pretty serious “downsides”, ennui…

Ooh, Two-For-One Night with the sharp-witted ladies of TP!

I stumbled into the right bar. :)

Is there is any legal way that Blago can assign this particular duty to his Lt Gov? And then let him pick whomever he wants to? I don’t care if it’s “unprecedented”, because there’s a lot of provisions inthe law that were passed years ago but never used. I’m only concerned with if it;s legal. If so, appoint someone that way. If not, well, I don’t know…

  16. ElBruce says:

Cheez, this stuff is making my head spin. Republicans from Utah don’t get to pick the Junior Democratic Senator from Illinois any more than the people of New York get to vote on theirs. Proposals and great reasons to the contrary notwithstanding, the law is already laid down and we gotta follow it!

    Erk.

He was in church! People talk like that in church. It’s not like it was a press release or something.

Shouted from on top of a huge ivory pillar…

    While wearing a cape…

    And a huge crown…

Come to think of it, I might be able to get behind that.

  18. ralph the wonder llama says:

Of course, as Zooey and Katy point out, it’s not so much Burris as Blago that’s the problem, and Ms. Moseley-Braun would have the same problem.

So thanks fer nuttin’, Sen. Bennett.

  19. ElBruce says:

I don’t trust a Republican calling Moseley-Braun “noncontroversial.” Something smells funny here.

  20. Cal Malenky says:

I’m surprised the GOP isn’t suggesting Alan Keyes.

  21. Keltoi at Night says:

It seems to me from all I have read and heard that Burris will be seated. That being the case, why did Reid pull the manuever he did today?

The whole thing sucks. I mean, does Illinois only get one Senator for the next forever as this thing drags through the courts? What is Reid playing for?

  22. Arctic Ghetto says:

Sorry Mr Bennett, but we have had enough of Republican ideas to last a life time. Go cry in your drink at the nearest country club if it hasn’t gone bankrupt.

Burris apparently has a meeting scheduled with Reid tomorrow. So I think Reid’s doing his “I’m a badass hardliner up until you hold a private meeting with me and then I’ll totally cave” act again (see Lieberman, Joseph). Watch for Burris to walk out of this meeting with a chairmanship at least.

  24. Marie says:

Burris is going to be the next senator from Illinois – he will make a deal with Reid and the Senate.
Reid played this badly (as is his m.o.) and after chairman Feinstein now says he should be seated, they will probably resolve this tomorrow or very soon – and end this circus!

  25. morlock says:

Speaking as an Illinois taxpayer: CMB was a no-talent then, a no-talent now. Just plain nothing.

  26. MapleStreet says:

Admittedly, I have a knee-jerk reaction to a republican saying a dem should or should not appoint someone.

But taking the idea at face value, I know nothing about Burris. I know nothing about Braun. But considering the audio recordings from Blago that have already aired on the news, anyone he appoints is under a cloud of suspicion whether deserved or not.

Blago needs to be cleared up first. However, as it doesn’t appear as if that is going to happen in the immediate future, and the people of Illinois deserve representation, there need to be some quiet, internal discussions between the dems on how to clear this up in a non-destructive style.

  27. curious says:

She would be a good appointment. But she was not chosen. And as much as I do not like Burris. He has a right to be sworn in. The Democrats have put their noses in something that has no legal standing.

The governor of Illinois is still governor, corrupt or not. And he has the right to seat anyone he likes until he is removed.

What amazes me is the Democrats. The Democrats who for eight years have had no spine and no courage to fight for our rights or the Constitution. But all of the sudden they fight against something that is legal. Too bad they were not that incensed when it meant something to the country as a whole.

My God these people are so stupid. So lame they cannot even pick a decent, valid fight. LAME.

  28. Keltoi at Night says:

A deal I have heard floated is that they will seat Burris if he agrees not to run in two years. What the hell kind of deal is that? He could agree and change his mind, or else he could walk around like a ghost for two years doing the human bookmark deal. Considering Reid has no standing to deny his seating, I say Burris should stick to his guns.

  29. dbadass says:

Or he could seroiusly dedicate his ass to making sure he worked hard enough to make himself a viable candidate to be able to stand on his own in a general election two years from now

  30. Roket says:

We should all be asking ourselves why our golden boy Patrick made his announcement before the indictment(s), if any. I’m more inclined to believe that the republicans are playing the Dems like banjos, as usual.

You are being a little too bossy for my taste, Miss Sneaker Snitcher.

    Do you have Obama-tis?

  32. Jackie says:

No all Republicans are wrong but it’s now a divided Party as Sarah brought the wing nuts out. I think the people of Obama’s district should have a say as to who replaces him if their still is a corrupt Govenor. Color should not matter and Burris is just using it. Here in California we have to deal with our own corrupt Law Makers like Diane Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi of couse those other corrupt Republicans too.

  33. Game of Life says:

    HAHAHAHAHA

    Butt out repugs.

I doubt a deal will be made because making a deal with Burris is being Blagojevich-ish.

  35. ElBruce says:

The Republicans have had a mad-on for Carol Moseley-Braun since she was there last time. I recall a lot of stories of all the racist crap they gave her since she was in office. Crap which she vocally did not take from them. So I don’t trust a Republican saying she wouldn’t be controversial.

    Keltoi at Night Says:

Well, the DSCC could give him no support. Wouldn’t prevent him from running, but would probably make it a bad idea. I think it’s worth the risk. It’s doubtful if a Republican could knock out that seat even after a tough Dem primary, and JJJr did a pretty good job of clearing himself of “Blago’s taint” so he can make a big charge at it in 2010.

    .

    Roket Says:

We should all be asking ourselves why our golden boy Patrick made his announcement before the indictment(s), if any.

He said that he wanted to go public before Blago was able to horsetrade the Senate seat, in order to prevent a crime from being committed. However, the Illinois legislature declined to convene over the holidays to do anything about it, so Blago managed to get off an appointment anyway. Maybe not the one he wanted, but enough to monkey wrench the whole works.

  36. sectionop92 says:

Do people on the Hill check their words as they leave their minds on the way out of their mouths anymore in this Blago scandal?

These are leaders of our country siding with a governor, directly or not, who is about to go down in more flames than the Hindenburg here.
