Hugh Hewitt’s ode to President Bush.

Hugh Hewitt’s ode to President Bush.

imag168.jpg In a new piece for Politico today, right-wing pundit Hugh Hewitt pens a paean to President Bush, saying that he remains in the small minority who approve of the job the President is doing. “Count me among the 30 percent, which will soon be 40 percent — and then more than 50 percent much sooner than most of the chattering class can conceive,” Hewitt writes. He also repeatedly compares Bush to Lincoln and insists that he will have a great legacy:

Like Lincoln, he picked commanders and followed their recommendations until overwhelming evidence of failure could no longer allow him to do so, and then he changed commanders. As with Lincoln, this approach to command led to some defeats on the battlefield. … Bush is deeply loved by the military. In wartime, that is among the most important measures. [...]

But his greatest admirers will be Americans, and perhaps Afghans, Iraqis, Israelis, Indians and Africans a century or more from now who read about his record and resolve in so many efforts will marvel at his restraint and credit his faith and his family for a remarkable service to freedom.

Hewitt later dismisses Bush’s critics as “14-year-olds with Internet connections.”

Once again, we have a kool-aid drinker who is trying to spin Bush as Truman instead of a combination of Hoover and Harding. As the choir he preaches to shrinks, so will his influence and decibel level.

Jimmy Carter is not remembered as a good President, even after many decades.

His stature grew from what he did after office. His Carter Center fosters peace and humanitarian causes worldwide.

George W. Bush will end up like Jeb, sitting on a bunch of corporate boards. He'll charge huge speaking fees and some ghostwriter will try to make Bush look like a decent bloke. Only the world knows otherwise.

Hugh Hewitt must want to write the biography that hundreds of thousands of Americans will happily use as toilet paper.

I much prefer Jack Cafferty's reality based ode to Chimpy:

“George Bush’s record as a student, military man, businessman and leader of the free world is one of constant failure. And the part that troubles me most is he seems content with himself.
He will leave office with the country $10 trillion in debt, fighting two wars, our international reputation in shambles, our government cloaked in secrecy and suspicion that his entire presidency has been a litany of broken laws and promises, our citizens’ faith in our own country ripped to shreds. Yet Bush goes bumbling along, grinning and spewing moronic one-liners, as though nobody understands what a colossal failure he has been."

This moron is up to his ass in failures of the Bush Crime Family and he is one of the 23% who still thinks that reality is not real. Who are the people who listen to these whacked out idiots anyway?

  15. ElBruce Says:

I seriously don't think I've ever heard of this guy. This punditry thing is getting down to "man on the street" levels of why-should-I-care. And what is it with that face he's making? He looks like he's crapping his diaper.

By the way, Bush's approval rating is 24%, not 30%. This isn't nitpicking; that whole "numbers will climb" thing is presumable based on having some clue what the number is. I might grant that Bush's approval rating will go up over time as the consequences of his actions aren't so immediate and people start to forget his intentional attempts to destroy everything that America ever stood for. However, the extreme secrecy of this administration, coupled with their inability to grasp that you can't keep evidence sealed in perpetuity, means that we've got decades worth of fresh revelations to uncover. Over time, we're going to find more and more about the level of culpability at the top in most of the worst crimes that the young 21st century has seen. And the stuff we find out later is the stuff they tried to bury deeper, which means it's going to get nastier and nastier as time goes on. So, I don't think so.

    .

But his greatest admirers will be Americans, and perhaps Afghans, Iraqis, Israelis, Indians and Africans a century or more from now who read about his record and resolve in so many efforts will marvel at his restraint and credit his faith and his family for a remarkable service to freedom.

They're going to read about it? They can just look around at the piles of rubble and the overflowing cemeteries if they want to "marvel at his restraint." That's like saying that Native Americans credit the faith and marvel at the restraint of Andrew Jackson.

    .

Hewitt later dismisses Bush’s critics as “14-year-olds with Internet connections.”

If the vast mass of Bush's critics were 14 years old, then the Republicans stand no chance whatsoever in 2012 and beyond.

  16. fletc3her Says:

Good Luck Hugh. You will be forgotten. Bush will be remembered as among the worst presidents we have ever had. His record speaks for itself. No amount of hagiography can change the stark numbers.

  17. A Patriot Acting Says:

Hey tullypain, Southern secessionists were traitors to America, not Americans. "Lincoln was the worst president ever"??!! Lay off the crack tully, at least before posting. It makes you sound like an idiot.

  18. Zimzone Says:

As a poster yesterday so eloquently described today's Republican, 'they're like worms squirming on a sidewalk in the rain'.

Slither & squirm, Hewitt, you do that soooo well.

  19. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

… Bush is deeply loved by the military. In wartime, that is among the most important measures. [

The Third-Reich deeply loved Hitler as did Saddam's Republican Guard as does bin Laden's Al-Qaeda.

  21. shoeless Says:

Wow! Hugh Hewitt thinks it will take more than 100 years for everyone to forget what Bush and his Republican thugs did! Even I am not that optimistic about the demise of the GOP!

In the 1800's, it only took about 50 years for people to forget that the Republican's predecessors, the Federalists, tried to turn our system of government into a monarchy, with John Adams as king.

I wonder what the former Republican Party will call itself when it reconstitutes in the 22nd century.

  22. Pete Tagliani Says:

Can we start a fund to get folks like Hewitt a reservation in a cryogenic chamber?

They have such a wondrous, child-like, fairydust belief that Bush is going to be bigger than the Beatles a century from now. I would just like them to live long enough to read the history books in 2108.

The Bush Administration looks bad now, despite having a press office to control the coverage as well as humanly possible. How might it look years from now, after the White House spokesmen are gone, after all the documents in Cheney's safe become declassified?

Does he really think that, 100 years from now, history teachers will be defending Bush and Cheney's logic-mangling constantly-shifting rationales for the Iraq War?

Hewitt should savor the present. I don't think it's going to get any better.

  25. pbg Says:

George W. Bush was (and is) an ignorant, arrogant child of privilege who would not take criticism from his associates, let alone his opponents. He never read even the summaries prepared for him, ignored evidence, appointed unfit people and slandered and punished the fit.
At best he was a rightist ideologue--but most of the time he didn't care. He wasan imperialist who didn't know or care about the rest of the world, a rich man who allowed gonifs to steal from other rich people, and a religious conservative who never went to church and let his underage daughters drink and party like--his youthful self.
We should perhaps be thankful that he was as lazy and venal as he was. He had the grace, when violating America's honor by waging a pre-emptive war based on lies, to screw up that war and turn it into a profiteer's banquet; when creating an imperial presidency not to make it work.
We should thank God that he made everything he touched turn to sh¡t--and that means his fascism and imperialism as well as our democracy.
Harding was at least affable. Nixon was at least professional.
George W. Bush is the face of the Republican Party: they chose him, knowing exactly who he was, and put him in office and kept him in office. He is their theory of government, their principle of foreign relations, and their vision of the future.
We owe George Bush a vote of thanks, at least, for letting us see that face.

If Bush had been president in 1861 he would have declared mission accomplished after Fort Sumpter and then invaded Portugal. On the other hand, he may have joined the Confederacy. After all they were only defending their property rights. Those slave-holders had strong conservative values.

I didn't see it, but I can guess she 1) referred to Obama as "B. Hussein" no fewer than 8 tens, 2) made some disparaging remarks against Edwards and/or Kerry, 3) attacked women, blacks, and gays, and 4) wore a tiny black cocktail dress.

Hewitt doesn't realize those '14 year olds' will be voters in 4 years. If they remember Bush as they do now they will be Democrats. Those of his ilk are the best Democratic Party recruiters we have. He is on his way down after following Bush over he cliff.

  31. celtic cynic Says:

"Bush is deeply loved by the military."

That's absolute bullshit. Wait until January 21 when the roaches come out of hiding and denounce the warmongers with a vengeance.

  32. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Mr. Hewitt, if you weren't such an ardent supporter of a man who spit on the Constitution he took an oath to support and defend, I might pity you in the years to come as you realize that the rest of us were right about Bush and you were wrong. But I won't. If you continue doing this, you'll just embarrass yourself.

  33. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

    tullypain Says:

So now states and there citizens are traitors for following the Constitution and using their right to secession?

Yes, they rejected America. Fact. They didn't want to be part of the Union. Fact. Reich-wing GOPigs living in the south that still embrace the confederacy and its rag are just as anti-American as terrorists. Fact

Hugh, listen. If you are going to try to take Al Franken's place as a comedian, now that he is in politics, you have to figure out what makes something funny. This isn't even close. Well, it is closer than any of your political pundrity has been to logic or truth, but it's still got a lot of polishing to be comedic gold. Keep trying.

  36. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    tullypain Says:

So now states and there citizens are traitors for following the Constitution and using their right to secession?

I just re-read the Constitution and I see nothing in there about the States having a "right to secession". Please direct me to the Article and Section that gives them this right. Thank you.

Why don’t you read a book and stop believing everything you’ve been told.

Well, some books aren't worth reading. Especially the ones offered by right-wing places like Newsmax. Pick and choose your reading material carefully. Try to find ones that offer the truth, and not ideological spin.

Lincoln was a racist piece of shit.

Can you cite some examples of this racism in action? Any stories we can look to, to see if our opinion of him matches yours?

Lincoln killed more American citizens than all other presidents.

This is so far off the mark that I might have to call it a lie. Are you referring to the soldiers killed by the Union Army during the Civil War? By your own statement, these people seceded from the United States, so they were no longer Americans. Or were you referring to some other Americans that Lincoln had killed? The Confederate Army, by contrast, actually did kill more American soldiers than any other army in history.

I wish he would have been shot in the head sooner.

That's just wrong, and you know it. IMHO, you need serious help.

    Victors write History.

There are two ways in which ol' Huge, as well as "Darth" Cheney, are correct in their assertions that History will be kind.

The first would be that the crises, chaos, catastrophes and clusterf ucks which are the inevitable legacy of the Buseviks for the next 20 years are so mind-bogglingly stupendous, and the tragedy ensuing is so stark and universal that future generations will look back on the Bush regime with real nostalgia: "Say what you will about Busheviks, it was better then..."

The second--which is not necessarily separable from the first--would be when the Bosses perpetuate the same Bushevik crap with the subsequent regimes they install (including the incipient Obama group), and recognize the Bushies as the authentic fonts of its dominance.

History rewards the victors with the prize of legitimacy.

Um, if you factor in casualties from both sides, it's correct.

Technically they were still americans - just rebellious ones.

  42. Leftside Annie Says:

Ah...so, according to the erudite (?) Mr. Hewitt, 76% of Americans are "14 year olds with internet connections"...?

Yeah, right. ;o) Got stupid, Hughie?

  43. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

  44. shoeless Says:

...a century or more from now who read about his record and resolve in so many efforts will marvel at his restraint and credit his faith and his family for a remarkable service to freedom.

So, Hugh Hewitt believes that everything will be destroyed in the next 100 years, except the Bush library.

  45. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    Amanda Terkel,

It's great that you report on various distortions of reality promoted by the right wing, but what would really help is if you could also provide links to the right places where we could lodge our complaints with the publications or news organizations that do this. Unless they start hearing from readers and viewers about what's wrong with what they're saying, they will continue to say it, and millions of Americans will continue to be kept in the dark.

Help us combat this spread of right-wing misinformation and revisionist history-writing. Please provide us links to all the places where Hewitt published this nonsense, so we can let them know what we think of them (and Hugh).

Thank you, and keep up the great work. Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year

  47. ElBruce Says:

“Bush is deeply loved by the military.”

I doubt it, since he sent them into a war based on lies. At some level, each one of them knows that the hell they're being put through was for no good reason. That's the worst betrayal any Commander-In-Chief can commit against his own troops.

But there aren't any appropriately sampled polls to gauge that anyways. The Military Times polls are "rip off this card and send it back," and most of their subscriptions go to officers and retired officers anyway. That's about as useful as an Internet poll. Probably less.

    ectoendomezo Says:

Well said. Thanks for taking the time to write what so many of us feel.

  49. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    ectoendomezo,

Good post. This may not answer your questions, but you might find it helpful in understanding why people vote Republican. Basically, the Republicans tap into people's fears and use emotional campaign themes rather than reasoned ones. One of our flaws as humans is that when our emotions are tapped into, our resoning centers tend to shut down. Every two years (and rarely in between), Republicans fire up the voters by trying to make all kinds of claims about gay marriage (the vast majority of which are false) because they know that once people's emotions have been tweaked, they won't listen to reason. If you read the article, you'll at least understand how we got where we are (in addition to the flagrant cheating by the Republicans.) I'm still working on figuring out how to win against this tactic.

  50. EugeneDebs Says:

Hewit is a clear moron if he thinks that catastrophe that walks like a man is going to become popular when we all realize the wisdom of lying us into a useless war and pretty much tanking our economy. These people are so delusional they live in an entirely alternate reality

What gall these neocons! First of all I believe it is a major stretch to state that 30% of America approves of Bush's job performance. Can anyone name one truthful, honest, positive contribution this group (Kristol, Barnes, Malkin, Coulter, Hewitt, etec, and all of those spewing the koolaid on the Faux News network) has made to improve facet of life in the United States of America? Now let's be honest now please. They just keep going on and on in their own little vile circle, keeping each other afloat; equally puzzling is why the major networks continue to air this garbage -- case in point was Bob Shieffer's interview (if that is what you want to call it) of Cheney last Sunday. What ever happened to the days of Cronkite, Murrow, Huntley and Brinkley when interviewees were held to making truthful statements?

  53. bigmacha Says:

For the record, I'm 64 years old and I too have an internet connection and I'm not alone - that's why Obama is President elect. Further,I suggest that Hugh get off the drugs he is taking (Kool Aid?). What planet is he living on? Perhaps he might want to read the current edition of Vanity Fair and catch the drift of some of the Bushies who have seen the light. There is no doubt that GWB will go down in history as the single most inept, incompetent, man who ever set foot in the oval office. The fact that nearly 30% of the country still believe that he is doing a good job causes me to worry about the future of this country.

The damage that shrub has done to this nation on the global stage is hopefully recoverable, but not deniable. The Constitution had no meaning for him - just some dusty old document written 200 plus years ago. History - never bothered with it, I was too busy boozing, drugging and leading the cheerleading squad.

Bottom line is that he is a member of the lucky sperm club and the gene pool wasn't that good to begin with.
