Levi Johnston resigns his position after allegations that Sarah Palin helped him skirt the rules.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that Levi Johnston, boyfriend of Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol, has quit his oil field job over questions about his eligibility to work in an electrical apprenticeship program. On Sunday, Dan Fagan – an Anchorage radio talk show host – questioned how Johnston was eligible to take part in the apprenticeship program without a high school diploma. Fagan wrote:

levi.gifThe governor, in trying to dispel rumors the father of her grandchild is a high school dropout, released this statement this past week, “Levi is continuing his online high school work in addition to working as an electrical apprentice on the North Slope.”

But federal regulations require all members of apprentice programs, union or otherwise, to first obtain a high school diploma, something the governor’s soon-to-be son-in- law does not have. Some apprentice programs even require the completion of high school level algebra or the post-secondary equivalent.

So how is it that the governor’s soon-to-be son-in-law is working in an apprentice program? Is this another case of the governor believing the rules don’t apply to her or her family?

Johnston resigned his apprenticeship position on Monday in an effort to “calm the waters,” his father said. The Johnston family said that neither Sarah Palin or her husband had any role in getting Johnston the job.

Update Flashback: More than 100 of Palin's appointments to state posts — nearly 1 in 4 — "went to campaign contributors or their relatives, sometimes without apparent regard to qualifications." The New York Times headlined, "Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes"

Well she is governer. Does that not entitle her to break the rules?

    She thinks so.

They perhaps didn’t need to take an ‘ative’ role…Exactly how many 18-year-old, high-school drop-out, /Levi Johnsons/ from Wasilla, Alaska, do you think there are applying for apprentice jobs up there?

  5. tom says:

Levi better hurry up and marry that little trollop, Bristol. He is clearly at risk for being left off the gravy train.

  6. LibertyLover says:

I sure am getting tired of seeing this woman’s dirty laundry.
Amazing “family values” though. Bless her heart.
I am wondering, though if we are seeing the final nails in the coffin of this woman’s political career?

    Short Answer: No…

She’ll be on the next GOPuke presidential ticket, especially if things keep getting worse, economically…

  8. ElBruce says:

At first I thought “Levi Johnston resigns his position” meant he was breaking up with Bristol. I mean, his career pretty much consists of marrying the Governor’s daughter, right?

True. Could have been a Palin fan breaking the rules without her knowledge. Most corruption isn’t traceably quid-pro-quo anywhere, though. But one thing it ain’t, is pure coincidence, like they’re making it sound. I believe it’s important to find out exactly who made the hiring decision and why.

  9. Allamr18 says:

geez poor levi, kid has had the entire last year of his life made out to the public. everyday families deal with teenage pregnancy but i couldnt imgaine it being the headlines in papers and stuff. either way, hes got an uphill battle and i wish him and bristol the best. however i dont want to hear anything else from the gop about conservative family values

  10. spencers mom says:

So, in order to dispell rumors that the kid is a drop out, the governor herself released a statement that led to the kid having to resign a job he was never qualified to hold, once again demonstrating her willingness to abuse her power to benefit her family.

    Political comedy gold!

    PEACE

  11. misshusseinmolly says:

OK, so what ARE the possible scenarios here? Let’s see:

    1. Palin (or the First Dude) greased the wheels to get Levi the apprentice job and the Johnston family is lying through their teeth out of loyalty and/or fear.

    2. Some bureaucrat allowed Levi to bypass the requirements to try to suck up to Palin, but did that on his own without any pressure from Sarah or Todd.

    3. Levi has another friend in the system who allowed him to bypass the requirements for reasons having nothing to do with Palin.

    4. The oil industry is so hard up for apprentice applicants that they’ll take anybody even if they have to waive normal requirements (hard to believe in this economy, though).

Obviously, this situation merits more investigation. But if it turns out to be anything other than Scenario #1, it really isn’t national news. However, it’s going to be interesting to see how Palin handles this — especially since this isn’t the first time she has used her office for her own personal gain or for that of her family.

  12. tom says:

She’ll be on the next GOPuke presidential ticket, especially if things keep getting worse, economically…

I wouldn’t be so quick to predict this. The economy in Alaska is circling the drain and she will demonstrate that she is not up to the task over the next year or so. Two things have made her “popular” in Alaska — (1) her state has been “net positive” in terms of money flowing to the state from the Feds and (2) high energy prices have buoyed state revenue. Those are both things of the past.

More bad news for Palin’s Political Prospects (from the article linked above):

A poll commissioned by TheAlaskaStandard.com and conducted by Dittman Research shows the governor is losing some of her appeal. When respondents were asked whom they would vote for between Lisa Murkowski and Sarah Palin in a 2010 race for the Senate, an overwhelming number said Murkowski. According to the poll, Murkowski would beat Palin by a margin of 56 percent to 23 percent.

  19. Tawdry says:

Seems like Sarah Palin will never go away. Reminds me of this little verse:
Like the young lady called Bright,
    Who travelled faster than light,
So could return from a journey
    On the previous night.

  20. Deep Thinker says:

I can’t believe this is news. Gov. Palin is an embarassment to Governors across this great country if these amatuer attempts at politcal patronage and nepotism are the best she can do.

Clearly she needed to spend more time here in Pennsylvania where both the Dems and Reps have taken to patronage and nepotism to All-Pro Hall of Fame Levels.

  21. liberalinaredstate says:

Sarah Palin and her family drama, she would be better off admitting to herself and everyone else she’s dragging down with her, that she needs to step back and fix her own house. I feel for those kids. Perhaps Ms. Palin should revisit her witch doctor.

  22. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Levi better hurry up and marry

I predict it will never happen. THe engagement was a sham purely for politicial purposes before the election to assuage the biblehumpers who sensed some whiff of hipocracy in a woman with a teenage unwed daughter pretending she was more moral and righteous than others. In all honestly I’ll bet Johnson isnt even the father, Palins daughter looks like the type who would sleep with whoever was the first to hand her a xanax and a 40 ounce that weekend..

Logistics are tricky: Where to have the groom’s-parent-sponsored rehearsal dinner — at the corner bar or at the county jail, so mom can attend?

Love those small-town, good-people values that trump the rest of the country’s misguided actions.

  26. fletc3her says:

I think we should give the guy a break. He’s a poor kid who knocked up his underage girlfriend out of wedlock, never graduated from high school, and his mother has been arrested for on drug charges. He’s got Republican family values coming out of his ears. This guy needs someone to lend a helping hand. It is unfortunate that Sarah Palin is so incompetent that she can’t even lend a favor to her “son-in-law” without causing an ethical scandal.

  27. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

I don’t understand why he had to drop out of school during his last year. Why didn’t he just finish and get his diploma? Did Bristol drop out as well?

I could maybe see her dropping out due to some sort of embarrassment, but why did he feel the need to drop out? Especially if they aren’t even married yet. In this day and age though don’t most pregnant teenage girls at least make an attempt to finish high school?

  28. dumbstruck says:

Isn’t it funny that the supposed liberal biased media does not cover this at all? We need TP and MMFA to do that work. They cannot STAND the fact that Obama is CLEAN!

He dropped out in March, three months shy of graduating. I suspect that even if he had stuck it out, he didn’t have the requisite classes/grades to graduate.

Sarah Palin wrote a letter of recommendation for Levi to the company who hired him. Now, if you were in HR at that company and you saw that “the Queen of Mean” want’s this kid to jump the queue and be admitted without having the requisite qualifications, what would you do? The poor people probably feared for their jobs if then turned Levi down.

I also believe the only reason why he “quit” was because he knew he would be kicked out of the program if he didn’t.

  39. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    APEC not OPEC Says:

And that’s their story and they’re sticking to it. I doubt that Levi’s father had the kind of pull you would need to get his son to the head of the line and admitted without having the requisite qualifications.

Pah! Rules are for the little people!!

  41. Jackie says:

Looks like it’s back to selling drugs for the Johnston Family. At lease Levi could have made an honest living if he had that job. Now Sarah will have to find Levi a high paying Govenment job so he wont back down on the agreement and of couse keep his mouth shut. Each lie Sarah tells just keeps getting bigger and adding more problems. No pictures of Sarah’s grandchild yet, I guess after the kids born they will sell the pictures. Yes the announcement came out to over the time of birth because a doctor told Sarah it only takes 252 days to have a normal child. Yes folks Bristol was over the 252 days and Sarah quickly had the announcement to block the questions.

  42. Marie says:

Well, if federal law requires a high school diploma, then someone made – or was made to make – an appointment.
The Palin family is more like trailer trash the more we learn about them, but because Granny Sarah is governor, people play along.
I hope she runs in 2012 – she will bring out the uneducated, crazy, gun-totin’ bigots – and the RNC will have themselves another pig requiring a ton of lipstick.
Levi is caught up in all this – a teenager with raging hormones, who doesn’t know the benefits of birth control, is going to have his every move reported in the press, and a probable future mother in law from hell.

  43. tigger says:

Got big bucks for the baby pics. Now he can quit his job, yeah.

  44. AMcG773 says:

The GOP considers this just another example of proper family values. The family deals with the unwanted pregnancy, and the family arranges for a cushy job for Bristol’s baby daddy. In their minds there’s nothing wrong with using what the family has to get what it wants because it isn’t relying on the government to do anything for it.

  45. ugotmeinsd_619 says:

Just makes me SMILE knowing she is not the VP!!

  46. impeachcheneythenbush says:

I feel sorry for both Bristol and Levi, actually. They are, after all, just kids. Stuck with dysfunctional families (at least mothers) on both sides, and have become national fodder thanks to Palin’s overweening ambition. The woman truly is George Bush in drag….everything she touches turns to sh*t.

  51. dbadass says:

good point. Why don’t we make him a surgeon or airline pilot or something else which might keep him off the welfare roles. Who cares if he isn’t really qualified…

  52. pete says:

This IS an issue. Bible Spice has been beautified by the ignorant rubes of the GOP while everything about her is corrupt to the core. She’s a fraud and perpetrator of frauds and every single one of her transgressions must be exposed to the light of day.

Poor Levi has two choices. He can marry the girl and be a full time Dad, sharing in the $300,000 baby picture windfall, or scrub to pay child support like so many who knocked up the wrong girl. He damn well doesn’t deserve any special treatment because the baby-momma is the Governor’s daughter.

  53. pete says:

BTW. Has the wedding been delayed pending results of a paternity test, or Mrs Johnston’s trial? I thought the kids were supposed to be hitched by now.

  54. I. B. Leary says:

I think the delay is because most people in Wasilla own rifles.

It’s been hard to round up enough shotguns to have a proper wedding.

  55. dbearton says:

Before they are done, they will prove Palin is not just a doofus, but a criminal doofus like Bush.

  56. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Poor Levi has two choices.

If he’s smart, one of them would be getting a paternity test for the kid…

  57. dog6869 says:

He Better ask his momma how to sell lots of DRUGS!!!
They named there kid TRIP!! What else would a a drug dealing family name their Grand kid!! WASILLA is the methamphetamine capital of Alaska!!!

  58. labman57 says:

Whether intentional or not, the young man was enrolled into a program for which he was not eligible. (It matters not whether he would have been eligible for some OTHER program; he was NOT eligible for this one.)

Some would prefer that everyone just looked the other way and let him break the rules. They claim that he was singled out because of his association with the Palins, yet the same can be said for the opposite–allowing him to stay in the program simply because of his association with the Palins. If he had not fathered Bristol’s baby, the Palinbots would not be the least bit concerned about Levi’s quitting the ASRC apprenticeship.

Celebrity cuts both ways. It can both provide undeserved privilege as well as result in extra scrutiny.
