Bollywood says goodbye to Bush with ‘mock documentary.’

Reuters reports that “Bollywood is ready with a farewell present” for President Bush, releasing a “film that takes pot shots at the outgoing U.S. president.” The movie, called “The President is Coming,” tells the story of six Indians vying for a chance to shake hands with Bush. The film’s trailer includes this exchange (near the end):

ACTOR: “You’re crazy, man. A narrow-minded chauvinist who hates people from different cultural backgrounds.”

ACTOR 2: “But that is just like Bush!”

Watch it:

“The premise wouldn’t have been as much fun if any of the other presidents had been around,” said the film’s director. “The whole fun of it is that it’s President Bush.” The movie debuts on Friday, Jan. 16. From the looks of the trailer, it’s no Slumdog Millionaire.

There was a time when the US used to be taken seriously…

    “shauvinist?”

    Could it be “chauvinist?”

And respected. And liked! I remember that…

And this is Bush’s legacy — providing laughter and guffaws for the world. I’m surprised he didn’t mention his world entertainment credentials when he was asked about his greatest achievement — instead he went with the failed Social Security thingy.

The ingrates! And after Bush traded nuclear technology to India for mangos.

  9. superid says:

It’s bad enough when the wit mocks you at the party, but when the tax accountant and the dentist join in…ouch.

  10. Gregor Samsa says:

Minuit is remembered as the man who traded Manhattan for beads.

Bush will be remembered as the man who traded nuclear technology for mangos.

Do we really we need to wait for history to judge Bush’s presidency?

  11. shoeless says:

Yes, I hear we have to wait at least 100 years.

  12. shoeless says:

So, just hold your tongue until then.

  13. margerine says:

I can’t read much into it. How often did Bill Clinton appear in cartoons too?

People always make fun of politicians here, from our country or not. Bush happens to be especially bad, but that’s kind of just a bonus.

  14. EnnuiDivine says:

Damn. I was hoping for a Bollywood-style dance number with a Cheney character shooting an old guy in the face.

Uh, Tracy, this is a mockumentary…

So where is the evidence of Bush’s racism?

This brings to mind a question you have yet to answer, where is the evidence that you have a brain?

You never seem to get sarcasm, or mocking humor, your life must be very dull indeed.

  19. Gregor Samsa says:

    Tracy__5 babbles:
To present a film that mock someone with humor by suggesting that Bush is racist must have some element of truth

Er… no. And they certainly don’t need to provide evidence of anything. Again, it’s a mockumentary.

I could say Obama is a racist, but that wouldn’t be funny because there is no truth to it.

Nothing you say is intentionally funny. It’s only funny in its sheer, breathtaking stupidity. Like your posts today.

    Now move along.

  20. belac says:

Tracy- Are you a film-maker and an architect?

  21. Gregor Samsa says:

    Tracy__5 babbles:
You sure obtuse and don’t actually know what a mockumentary is or at least good one.

    Says the King of Obtuse.

Humor is subjective -some people will think the movie is funny, and won’t care one bit what you think.

Again to mock someone you need evidence that point to some truth behind the mocking…

Again, no. Once again, humor is subjective. It will ring true to some, and that is their evidence.

    Gosh, you are really slow.

  22. belac says:

    Common knowledge?
What if people find it funny anyway, Tracy?
Are you gonna tell them they’re wrong?

Can you send that link (which in no way supports your position, BTW) to all the films viewers?

You are a bizarre human being.

  23. dbadass says:

    Hi Tracy_5.
Are you deciding who has to answer in what sequence here too?

  24. Wayne says:

    Gregor Samsa Says:
    Gosh, you are really slow.

    That is an understatement.

  25. Gregor Samsa says:

    Tracy__5 prattles:
    For your education….

Gosh, Tracy, are you really this obtuse?

It doesn’t matter if you don’t find it funny. It doesn’t even matter if it’s not a good (by your standards) movie. Nobody here is debating the quality of the film either -that is your red herring.

The only thing that the post highlights is that Bush is a punchline, a laughingstock, a joke (and a bad one at that).

    Sheeessshh….

  26. belac says:

    Here’s the problem, Tracy…
you can criticize form and you can criticize content but you can’t claim that the form won’t support particular content (especially when you think that ‘common knowledge’ makes you a film critic)
and when you do it makes you look like you have no idea what you are talking about… even with links.

  27. Gregor Samsa says:

    Tracy__5 Says:
You just said that the element of truth is not necessary.

Oh my goodness… do I really have to spell it out for you?

Some have a certain perception of George Bush, for good or for bad. Perception makes reality. And humor is still subjective.

Seriously, next time you are bent on a battle of the wits, try to come armed…

So where is the evidence of Bush’s racism?
    ___________________________________________________________

First, this film (and the intended humor) is produced by INDIAN film makers, not American ones. So the perception of Bush’s intolerance for people of “different cultural backgrounds” come from there, not here (the perception people have here of Bush’s racism or lack thereof is for a different thread).

So why would an Indian scriptwriter perceive Bush to be intolerant? Or why would he assume his intended audience (Indians) would agree?

Let’s look at the scoreboard from a South Asian perspective. They see a horrific attack against the United States on September 11, 2001 conducted by mostly Saudis, from an organization led by people hiding out and protected by a regime in Afghanistan, so naturally Bush attacks IRAQ because all brown (or even slightly brown) people are alike to him (I’m not claiming this is true or false — I’m just saying this is the perception).

Bush has also ramped up extra surveillance, scrutiny, and general harrassment of Muslims in the United States, and many people who aren’t Muslim but just happen to look “scary and brown” (including many Hindu Americans) have been harrassed when trying to fly, apply for a job, or enjoy the rights other Americans are entitled to. Many Indians have relatives or friends who live in the United States, so they are hearing these stories first-hand.

Is it any wonder that the perception in India and other South Asian countries is that Bush has a rather closed mind when it comes to people of other cultures?

Very thoughtful post, as usual MissMolly. I am afraid it will be wasted on the likes of Twacy.

He’s probably wondering about the tribe these Indians belong to, and what reservation they live in.

So where is the evidence of Bush’s racism?
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

RAcism is the one derogatory attack on Bush I see no evidence of. I have seen some cluelessness but nothing out of line for someone of his upbringing in the 50’s. I have also seen good, strong statements from him attacking racism like his strong statements about remarks about lynching or displays of a noose. I think this was petulant but I doubt it was motivated by racism

  31. belac says:

And you still would think some of the lines to be funny even if some of the joke are based on lies?

I heard a joke about a screen door on a submarine once… I thought it was funny, until I learned it was a LIE! There never was a screen door on any submarine!

I used to love watching the Simpsons… then I learned there was no such family, it was all lies!

That’s why I only watch “America’s Funniest Home Videos” now… sure that baseball hitting dad in the crotch is a little predictable but at least I know it’s based in truth.

  32. Gregor Samsa says:

    Tracy__5 babbles:
And you still would think some of the lines to be funny even if some of the joke are based on lies?

Did you hear the one about the panda bear that walks into in a bar and… oh wait, panda bears don’t go in bars. Saying that would be a lie.

Seriously, try not to be so dense.

And you wonder why MSNBC’s rating suck so bad consideing blah blah blah

    Wha?

You still haven’t processed the fact that this is an Indian movie, have you?

You know, India, the country on the other side of the world? Where most people don’t care for MSNBC?

Seriously, try not to be so dense.

To attempt to deal with you? Are you kidding?

Yeah, I was kidding. There is no way you could come armed, even if you wanted to.

  33. Gregor Samsa says:

    Tracy__5 babbles on:
or are you just straight up insulting the Indian people for accepting these false racist preceptions of Bush created by their media?

    Wha?

I am insulting them because they have a different opinion of Bush? I am insulting them because their perception is shaped by their media & culture? wow…. seriously, try not to be sooo dense…

  34. belac says:

    Nothing more to say, Tracy?

You’ve finally convinced me that comedy is best left to the professionals… and that’s the truth.

  35. Gregor Samsa says:

    Tracy__5 babbles:
    You get kicked constantly.

    In your dreams, Twacy.

None of the prattle you have managed to post has any relevance to the point in the thread, namely, that Pres Bush is the butt of jokes in India.

What you, I, or anyone else may or may not find funny is completely, 100% beside the point.

    Gosh, you are slow…

  36. belac says:

Tell me why you think that these particular lines out of this movie cited by TP are funny? Or do you?

Yeah… you know what they day about having to explain a joke? I thought that was ‘common knowledge’
