RAcism is the one derogatory attack on Bush I see no evidence of. I have seen some cluelessness but nothing out of line for someone of his upbringing in the 50’s. I have also seen good, strong statements from him attacking racism like his strong statements about remarks about lynching or displays of a noose. I think this was petulant but I doubt it was motivated by racism

First, this film (and the intended humor) is produced by INDIAN film makers, not American ones. So the perception of Bush’s intolerance for people of “different cultural backgrounds” come from there, not here (the perception people have here of Bush’s racism or lack thereof is for a different thread).

So why would an Indian scriptwriter perceive Bush to be intolerant? Or why would he assume his intended audience (Indians) would agree?

Let’s look at the scoreboard from a South Asian perspective. They see a horrific attack against the United States on September 11, 2001 conducted by mostly Saudis, from an organization led by people hiding out and protected by a regime in Afghanistan, so naturally Bush attacks IRAQ because all brown (or even slightly brown) people are alike to him (I’m not claiming this is true or false — I’m just saying this is the perception).

Bush has also ramped up extra surveillance, scrutiny, and general harrassment of Muslims in the United States, and many people who aren’t Muslim but just happen to look “scary and brown” (including many Hindu Americans) have been harrassed when trying to fly, apply for a job, or enjoy the rights other Americans are entitled to. Many Indians have relatives or friends who live in the United States, so they are hearing these stories first-hand.

Is it any wonder that the perception in India and other South Asian countries is that Bush has a rather closed mind when it comes to people of other cultures?

Some have a certain perception of George Bush, for good or for bad. Perception makes reality. And humor is still subjective.
