Just as Israel is indicating it conditionally welcomes an Egyptian-French cease-fire proposal, Democrats in Congress are “scrambling to push out” a “non-binding resolution supporting Israel’s goal” in the Gaza military operations:
U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the U.S. House of Representatives majority leader, told JTA he was looking at such a resolution, which is being drafted in the office of Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
“Certainly it would not demand a cease-fire,” Hoyer said. “It would speak to the conditions that would justify a cease-fire. A cease-fire is not a just cease-fire when it’s just Israel” holding fire.
Ron Kampeas reports, “In a signal of the issue’s sensitivity, the resolution was being drafted ‘in-house,’ without the usual consultation with outside pro-Israel groups. It also was aimed at co-opting Republicans in a bid to keep them from ‘out-hawking’ the Democrats on the issue.”
What a wonderful way to start the new Congressional session — with an endorsement of genocide.

That should jerk a knot in Israel’s arse.
January 7th, 2009 at 9:55 amWhen are our representatives going to represent our views? These spineless fouls are at it again!
January 7th, 2009 at 9:56 amAnd you wonder why people voted for Nader? Most Democrats stand for nothing except reelection.
January 7th, 2009 at 9:56 amSo much for my long-chreished dream that the Dems would finally grow some spine. Yet another non-binding resolution full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. The more things change…
January 7th, 2009 at 9:59 amAnd a war is not a just war when Israel indiscriminately kills such a large number of civilians.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:00 amThese are the kinds of actions that make me so skeptical about the Congress ever “pushing” the kinds of change so desperately needed. The Democratic leadership is weak!
January 7th, 2009 at 10:01 amAnd people get shocked when we say there is a Zionist campaign going on in the US.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:02 amDoes anybody ELSE suspect that “Israel” is the sickest joke ever committed against Jews by goyim?
January 7th, 2009 at 10:03 amthen perhaps steny hoyer and howard berman should step down from their elected positions and join the Israeli army instead of trying to legislate against the best interests of 90% of Americans
January 7th, 2009 at 10:10 am(groan)
whyyy can’t this supposedly “progressive” party come up with a solution that rightly criticizes BOTH Hamas and Israel?
wankers.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:13 amIs there some way we can get rid of Hoyer? Also, the heading here is misleading. It isn’t “Democrats”, it’s Hoyer and a few of his buddies. Until the entire group of Democrats vote in favor of this ridiculous thing, I’m giving the rest the benefit of the doubt.
I have to say, though, that I was very disappointed in Obama’s first words on the Gaza mess. He somehow made the 600+ dead in Gaza equal to the 5 dead in Israel.

January 7th, 2009 at 10:16 amThe inhumanity, savagery and US complicity in this genocidal war may be lost on us, but be assured it is not on the Muslims seeing Palestinian men, woman and children massacred buy Israelis using US weapons.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:17 amJust sent off a email to my congressman… Suggest we all do it!
January 7th, 2009 at 10:20 amThe Democratic Party has traditionally been the party of choice for followers of Judaism. Only with the rabid fear mongering of Karl Rove did the more fearful voters slide in behind George Bush and the neo-cons. Not forgetting, of course, the weapons and aerospace industries, the states where they do business in, and their need for perpetual conflict.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:20 amThis is hardly surprising. If we don’t take care to continually breed new generations of terrorists with our unthinking, unconditional support of Israel and economic imperialism in the Middle East, how could we ever hope to perpetuate an endless war on the abstraction of “terror?” Where would the military/industrial complex be then?
Can’t you people think of someone besides yourselves for once?
January 7th, 2009 at 10:21 amHoyer: A cease-fire is not a just cease-fire when it’s just Israel” holding fire.
Note to Steny Hoyer: ISRAEL BROKE THE CEASE FIRE, YOU DUMB F**K!

Gaza truce broken as Israeli raid kills six Hamas gunmen
“A four-month ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza was in jeopardy today after Israeli troops killed six Hamas gunmen in a raid into the territory. Hamas responded by firing a wave of rockets into southern Israel, although no one was injured. “
So why did Israel break the ceasefire?
“The Israeli military said the target of the raid was a tunnel that they said Hamas was planning to use to capture Israeli soldiers positioned on the border fence 250m away.” (The Guardian)
So we’re supposed to believe that Israel had to go into Gaza to stop Hamas militants from digging their way into Israel, popping out of the ground on the Israeli side and kidnapping ‘helpless’ Israeli soldiers patrolling the border?
Really? Are Israeli soldiers are that pathetic?
If they knew of the tunnel they could mine the area on their side of the fence and wait for the militants to show up—AND THEN be able to say the Hamas broke the cease fire.
But they didn’t, did they? Why not?
Maybe because the tunnel story was an excuse to go into Gaza and provoke Hamas so they could get their war on before Obama takes over the WH? Maybe the tunnel never existed.
So…
Israel breaks the ceasefire on November 5th with a ridiculous excuse about how some soldiers are going to be kidnapped from a tunnel, and kill six Hamas militants.
Hamas predictably responds on the same day with some rockets, but to no effect.
Israel responds to the rockets by blockading the entire region from receiving ordinary supplies.
Hamas responds by launching more rockets, which still have direct no effect.
Israel responds by killing a few more Hamas militants
So now it’s 12-0 to the Israelis by November 11th and the blockade continues.
So over several days Hamas sends 200 rockets into Israel (apparently still without any deaths or injuries).
On December 11 Israel responds with a 60-aicraft attack that killed 225 and injured 700.
“With many of the targets in densely-packed residential areas, many of the dead caught in the blasts were civilians, including women and children.”
(Daily Mirror, December 12, 2008 http://tinyurl.com/72xkw3 )
In this particular case it’s the Israelis at fault, but of course to acknowledge that FACT would somehow be too awful to contemplate. Maybe because the US has nor moral standing to accuse anyone of launching an illegal war in the name of ’self-defense’.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:22 amThe european Jewish colony should have never been created, but in order for there to be peace Hamas has to realize that the white man is not going ANYWHERE. So they should stop committing terrorist acts and sending their puny bombs over to Israel or they will end up like the Native Americans=slaughtered. They should be smart like the black man and woman of America. Outnumbered and out gunned we kissed up to whitey, mixed with him, and adopted some of his ways until some good hearted white progressives helped to bail us out.

January 7th, 2009 at 10:33 amF**K Israel.
I’ll say it again:
F**K Israel.
Instead of WASTING time and money with bs like this shouldn’t you A$$HOLES be trying to FIX our FU(KING economy? Shouldn’t you A$$HOLES be trying to impeach the worst President in history? Shouldn’t you A$$HOLES be trying to get Chimpy to stop blocking the UN from pushing a ceasefire? Shouldn’t you A$$HOLES be trying to…
Oh forget it. I let a little bit of reality and common fu(king sense seep into my brain for a moment there…Just let me bash my brains in with a hammer for a few seconds…(smash smash)…ok, now I’m ready to accept this crap as reasonable.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:40 amdrafted ‘in-house,’ without the usual consultation with outside pro-Israel groups.
pffft…. there’s NO group more pro-israel than the united states congress.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:41 amThis truly disgusts me.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:52 amI would think that having Congress officially rah-rah one side or another would count as a factor against getting a cease-fire established. They’re actually getting in the way of peace here.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:56 amAt this point, if Bushie wants to act like a petulent tw@t i say let him have at it. Minor antics/insults like this are adorable at this point.
13 more days. =D
January 7th, 2009 at 10:58 amummm…..wrong thread.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:58 amHeaven forbid the Dems should be out-hawked. Remind me again why we vote for these guys?
January 7th, 2009 at 11:01 amSilly rabbits, making it possible (not to mention necessary) for US companies to sell more arms and ammunition to Israel IS doing something to jumpstart the US economy. LMAO. If only these fools upheld American ideals and worked as hard for individual Americans as they do for corporations and other nations . . . why we might have a government we could be proud of.
January 7th, 2009 at 11:06 amThey think this will make them look more hawkish BUT INSTEAD it will emphasize their wishy-washy status with the public at large and it will signal the neocons that they can still do whatever the Q@#$%$%^&*! they want and expect to get away with it.
GROW SOME BALLS YOU REAL LIBERALS OUT THERE IN CONGRESS!! CALL ISRAEL TO TASK AS WELL AS HAMAS AND LABEL THEM ALL AS SPOILED LITTLE MURDEROUS CHILDREN! WHAT IS BEING DONE IS WRONG ON BOTH SIDES AND THE CIVILIANS SUFFER.
January 7th, 2009 at 11:12 amAll well and good except the Palestinian children and civilians were suffering before this escalation. How do resolve that in your mind?
January 7th, 2009 at 11:20 amAIPAC owns Congress. This is why. I would guess that Bush also wiretapped everyone in Congress and has lots of dirt on them.

Good point. Bombs just sitting around don’t need replacing.
January 7th, 2009 at 11:34 amWhy is it that we always kiss Israel’s ass? I can think of terms for Israel and genocide comes to mind. Take away all of this JudeoChristian nonsense and they should be treated no different than France or Sudan or Iran for that matter.
January 7th, 2009 at 11:37 amThey finally allow open elections in Palestine and they overwhelming and democratically elected Hamas with UN monitoring the election. Yet somehow because the war hawks in Israel don’t like Hamas they want to overrule the will of the people.
America wake the F up. Israel is not our “friend” they are our customer. Period. Look up the USS Liberty and ask yourself is this something a “friend” would do.
Keep up the great work Hoyer and Pelosi!
January 7th, 2009 at 11:43 amThis is Steny’s last chance to back Bush. He will try to put on a new face like Diane and Jay, soon.
January 7th, 2009 at 11:44 amThe raid on Gaza is doing a HUGE disservice to Jews worldwide. Graffiti, arson, assault (throughout Europe and America)…Israel is fomenting more antisemitism these days than at any time since the end of WWII.
January 7th, 2009 at 11:58 amOnce again our government give’s huge amount’s of money to Israel and then sell’s them every distructive weapon on the planet including phosphrus and nuke’s to continue the genocide of every person they don’t like…Some person in an adjoining country say’s they want Israel to cease to exist and boom….As of yesterday 660 people in Gaza ceased to exist at Israel’s hand’s with bomb’s stamped Made in America…Of the 660==215 were little children and 98 were women…
There were no gun’s in the hand’s of those women or their babies…Killing farmer’s tending their cow’s is not a just war either..Israel can not put a good spin on this and neither can America….
Not all of the resident’s of Israel are to blame, neither are most American’s guilty but the ruler’s of both countrie’s are….We need to step up and shout, make our government do the right thing….It is time to stop the flow of money into Israel and refuse to sell them any war supplie’s…It’s time to stop sending child support payment’s to a waring country and stop creating war’s…No more war’s, demand peace….No more genocide’s in Iraq, Gaza, any where…It’s time for massive Peace marche’s and making a diffrence..P.B.& J

As long as the US Congress continues to endorse war, either by the USA or other nations, the USA will never be seen as a Nation striving for peace around the world.

They have to beat Obama to the punch. Who will write Obama’s position statement when it’s finally delivered after weeks of gestation? Will it be IDF tough Rahm Emanuel or Bush’s Israel-Palestinian Territories Security Envoy General James L. Jones?

January 7th, 2009 at 1:06 pmThe Howard Berman interviewed by The Jerusalem Post in summer 2008?
Howard Berman likes to joke that he became a Zionist before he became a Democrat. Aside from the moment when he learned that president Franklin Delano Roosevelt had died, the 67-year-old congressman’s earliest political memory is of being at a rally at a Los Angeles stadium celebrating the birth of Israel in 1948.
Today, as the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, he’s in a position to do more than wave flags and cheer. He has the helm of one of the most powerful bodies shaping US foreign policy, and he says his decision to run for Congress and focus on international relations while in office was intimately connected to his Jewish background and ties to the Jewish state.
“Israel’s security and the US-Israeli relationship is for me an issue that shapes my whole agenda [in] Congress, and guides it,” he told The Jerusalem Post in a recent interview in his Capitol Hill office.

January 7th, 2009 at 1:17 pmDecember 18th Howard Berman tells the Jerusalem Post:
In an interview after addressing a conference at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, Berman also said the new US administration should not interfere if Israel felt it necessary to take military action in the Gaza Strip.
“The [rocket] strikes, the ongoing [arms] smuggling, the Hamas efforts to modernize their arsenal – all these things together pose a real threat to Israel, and an intolerable situation. There is obviously a big price to pay for deciding to take military action, but I think the US should support the Israeli decision on this,” he said.
He said he believed the Obama administration would be “very reluctant” to interfere with an Israeli “self-defense action.”
December 27th, Israel attacks Gaza
January 7th, 2009 at 1:28 pmhoyer is a war criminal and a Nazi as is the entire congress which once again ignores the will of the people.
January 7th, 2009 at 2:38 pmYesterday’s genocide count…Israel losses 5….Israles bombs killed 660==215 were children, 98 were women….So it look’s like Israel is the exterminator’s not Gaza or Hamas..Hello! will the brain dead troll’s get any brain food from their usual serving of kool aid?..Guess not…
January 7th, 2009 at 2:58 pmYeah, witch, I think four of those five Israeli losses were friendly fire.
January 7th, 2009 at 3:10 pmI don’t support Hamas in the least. Why doesn’t Israel let citizens leave the war zone? All 1.5 million Palestinians are not Hamas.
As an American, I want my government to further peace and help regions solve conflict, not play an endless game of divide and conquer in order to sell weapons and gain access to oil.
Tracy and LtDan should be huge Hillary supporters. Tony Blair met with Hillary and Gen. Jones weeks before Israel began steamrolling Gaza. He gave indications that something was afoot.
America’s blue hands are all over this operation. The Red boys should be praising Barack Obama, Rahm Emanuel, Hillary Clinton, and General James L. Jones because they agree with you.
Next target Iran per Blair and Berman.
January 7th, 2009 at 3:12 pmOnly one President at a time on foreign affairs? Then why did Hillary Clinton and General Jones meet with Tony Blair on Israel Palestinian Territories in early December? Haaretz reported such their Dec. 20 piece on Mr. Blair.

Hamas is no different than the Taliban, i.e. supporters of terrorist activities. BTW how can Israel negotiate peace with an organization when it’s stated purpose is to exterminate Israel?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Your take is propagandistic. Hamas is not the same as the Taliban there are terrorists among them as well as reasonable politicians. How can THEY negotiate with a country that continually assasinates and kidnaps their politicians. The reason they won the elections is because Israel refused for the last twenty years to negotiate a just settlement with Fatah. As Kennedy said if you make non violent change impossible you make violent change inevitable. The whole idea that Israel has no partner to negotiate with is just a long standing excuse. I could easily put up half a dozen quotes by Israeli politicians saying they would push the Palestinians into the sea and that they must learn to live like drugged roaches in a bottle and the same harsh extremist language. Hamas like Fatah before them has no illusions that they Israel is going anywhere. They want their land back. Israel has been occupying it and building settlements that are clearly illegal by the fourth Geneva convention for forty years. THAT is the bottom line of the issue. I know there are no white hats in the arena here. Israel has done THEIR share of attrocities as well as the Palestinians. In the end the international consensus that Israel go back to the Green line and make peace with negotiated security and water guarantees for both sides is the only realistic solution. Isreal will never have security if they dont eventually make peace with their neighbors like they DID with Egypt and Jordan. No country can endure forever on a war footing and no matter how often they win they only get to lose ONE TIME and they are through.
January 7th, 2009 at 3:54 pmWiley, I read that as well…Democracy now had the count 680 dead in Gaza today to 10 Israel…Another repeat of Lebanon and Israel’s genocide on their neighbor’s. Starve them then kill the…Nearly 100 people in one big family were rounded up into one house and then shelled…70 died…Fish in a barell…
Has any one here read the article’s why this is happening.? Willy has a blog where he point’s out that natural gas and oil found just off the shore of Gaza has Israel pissed that they were left out of the brokering deal…My opinion is Israel do’s not give a rat’s ass about any life but their’s and they plan to level all to get all the land..Not all from Israel but their administration..Just like our war hawk’s supporting and supplying take over’s, regime change’s and supporting Israel…Sick….I grieve…Our country has alway’s been like this it is time to stop…..We must demand Peace….Blessings
January 7th, 2009 at 4:39 pmUS aid to Israel has destabilized the Middle East; propped up a national system based on ethnic and religious discrimination; enabled unchecked aggression that has, on occasion, been turned against Americans themselves; funded arms industries that compete with American companies; supported a pattern of brutal dispossession that has created hatred of the US; and resulted in continuing conflict that has cost the lives of thousands of Palestinians and a few Israelis.
By providing massive funding to Israel, no matter what it does, American aid is empowering Israeli supremacists who believe in a never-ending campaign of ethnic cleansing; while disempowering Israelis who recognize that policies of morality, justice, and rationality are the only road to peace.
It is time to kick the Israeli Lobby out of America.

BTW, there are no “civilians” in Gaza! There are certainly non-combatants, such as children too young to hold up a rocket launcher, but those people CHOSE Hamas and are complicit.
Civilians my A$$
