Bush rejected Israel’s request for bombs to attack Iran.

The New York Times’ David Sanger reports that President Bush rebuffed a secret Israeli request last year for specialized bunker-busting bombs to attack Iran’s nuclear facility in Natanz. Sanger suggests one possibility for Israel’s request was to “goad the White House into more decisive action”:

The White House denied that request outright, American officials said, and the Israelis backed off their plans, at least temporarily. But the tense exchanges also prompted the White House to step up intelligence-sharing with Israel and brief Israeli officials on new American efforts to subtly sabotage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, a major covert program that Mr. Bush is about to hand off to President-elect Barack Obama.

Matt Yglesias writes, “Seems like Bush did the right thing by saying no.” The story comes at a time when the Bush administration is being criticized for its silence regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Update "Several thousand protesters descended on the White House Saturday in support of Palestinians in war-ravaged Gaza, as other protests took place across Canada and in the Mexican capital."
Update Siun at FireDogLake accuses Sanger of getting his facts wrong. She cites a Haartez report which indicates that the U.S. approved the sale of special bunker-busting bombs.

…Never tired of watching its own horror show, the Bush team is reprising the scenario it ran in Lebanon: Cheney goads Bush into giving tacit approval for Israel to launch a military offensive against a group of sand denizens who, in terms of relative firepower, amount to an ant colony. Kondi does her hair up like a fright wig and drags out the ceasefire process until Israel a) has killed all the sand denizens it wants to kill or b) starts getting its tohkes kicked by the sand denizens and wants mommy to make them stop it…..

Glad to see we haven’t completely caved to Israel’s whim.
I am a Jew and support Israel’s right to exist.

What Israel is doing in Gaza goes beyond questions of existentialism. True, they are facing an enemy who’s sworn objective is to kill Jews (read the charter of Hamas). This does not justify close to 3000 casualties in Gaza. The people of Gaza do not have(and, likely, never had) the strength to reject a group like Hamas, that uses civilians as human shields. For this, they suffer unimaginable horror.

Israel may not be committing a genocide (were they, Palestinians would be slaughtered en masse in the West Bank, as well), but the actions of Olmert, Livni, Barak, et.al. are war crimes by the standard of the United Nations. This is senseless violence and an aberration of everything Jewish law and culture stands for. Hamas must be stopped, but this is not the solution.

You know, blowing up a facility that has fissile materials is a bad idea. Neocons only have room for one thought in their head at a time, so perhaps we should start reminding them that nuclear materials spread into the atmosphere kills innocent people over a broad area slowly over decades.

  6. Michael Lafferty says:

As a former US Army intelligence officer—who’s area of expertise does not happen to include the Middle East, but another region entirely—I tend to dismiss this all as another example of the hocus-pocus, cloak and dagger, even Kabuki-like world of intelligence, counter-intelligence, information and disinformation.

Nothing is quite as it seems under normal circumstances, and nothing has been reasonably close to historic norms for the last eight years. The rather fanciful original reporting assumes a near-complete neutering of Vice President Cheney by the civilian and military leadership of the Department of Defense. I don’t think that’s quite the case…

There are just enough plausible hints in the original story to allow an observer with a pre-ordained agenda to draw either conclusion: that the Iranians continue at an unbroken and increasing pace toward the development of deployable nuclear weapons, or that they have abandoned any such effort all together. The truth likely lies somewhere between.

And, as truth is the first casualty of warfare, it is fair to observe that this administration has a lengthy and rich record of driving intelligence according to policy goals, to conducting clearly unlawful programs both internationally and domestically, and to lying repeatedly to shore up its objectives, most of which it has fallen far short of achieving.

There is no reason to believe that anyone in a position to wield policy influence in the administration actually believes any of the anonymous claims made in the story. Rather, this appears to be an orchestrated ‘leak’ to drive policy objectives, once again. Another sham, from the same group of bad actors. The more things change, the more they stay the same…

At this point, a furious Sharon reportedly turned toward Peres, saying “every time we do something you tell me Americans will do this and will do that. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Israel of GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs as well as associated equipment and services. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $77 million.

Israel will have no difficulty absorbing these additional bombs into its armed forces. The proposed sale will not affect the basic military balance in the region.

The missile, called GBU-39, was developed in recent years by the US as a small-diameter bomb for low-cost, high-precision and low collateral damage strikes.

  25. stateofthedivision says:

With Iraq teetering on a precarious peace, an Israeli attack on Iran would’ve been disastrous.

No way Shia Maliki gives permission for Israel to use Iraqi airspace. If Israel took another route and attacked Iran, any Shia’s with a grudge would have ample excuse for violence, potentially ruining Bush’s final polishing his Iraqi legacy.

I agree with Michael Lafferty, that this a kabuki dance. Why rehash an old story? Here are my guesses:

    1. Is shows America is not Israel’s lackey, even as we sit on our hands during Day 16 of Gaza’s pummeling

    2. It’s part of burnishing Bush as “not an endless war monger.”

If this story is true, then it would be one of the very few rare decent decisions Bush ever made. However, if Michael Lafferty is correct and this is simply disinformation we are being fed, it makes me extremely concerned. One word, however, that never appeared in the NYT article about this issue was “peace.” I believe that if the U.S. assured Iran that we would not attack them, nor would we support Israel in doing so, they may not feel a need to develop nuclear weapons. Under today’s conditions, I don’t blame them for wanting to do so. They are like the kid that’s being bullied in the schoolyard, and would certainly try to get access to bigger rocks to defend themselves. In addition, as signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, they DO have every right to develop nuclear power plants. Unlike, by the way, either Israel, Pakistan or India who never signed the treaty, and “secretly” developed nuclear weapons. You know, our so-called “allies.”

  29. Jackie says:

Bush truely did reject Israel’s request because Russia said they would protect Iran from any US/Israel attack. Bush is a drunk and druggie but he does know Russia has more Nukes then the US and Israel put together. This story was reported now because Israel’s illegal invasion into Palestine with weapons supplied by the US plus Israel has it’s own Nuclear Weapon to use if they choose to. As the World watches the Palestine Holocaust Massacre we will see a Museum build to remember this for History. The 1948 UN agreement that allowed Israel to settle on Palestine land has been broken. Yes Palestine has bombed Israel as they have lost 6 people and 3 soldiers while Israel has murdered 800 people 1/3 children and wounded 3,000 with US illegal Cluster bombs. This invasion planned by the US/Israel/Abbas will end on Jan. 20th when Obama take office. No World Leader should back a mass murder and watch this Holocaust Massacre. The UN is powerless as they did nothing when Bush/Cheney did the same thing to Iraq based on lies and greed of Iraq Oil.

I’m rejoiced by the common sense I find on this site, and refer to EnnuiDivine’s post (n5) to put forward the plain observation that informed moderate Jews and Christians are generally aware that the Zionist (and Neocon) policies are inherently unstable and “profit” the few. Rabbi Lerners views [http://www.tikkun.org/magazine/tik0901/frontpage/ml] reassured me my humble opinion that Zionism shouldn’t be confused with Judaism!

In order to convince Christians to pressure the White House to nuance it’s Zionist lobby-induced unequivocal support for the Zionist leaders of Israel, I though these quotes from the bible [esp. 2:9 and 3:9] could be of great help. Here are the interesting picks from a paper copy of the holy bible, with a few personnal comments:

    >>”La Sacra Bibbia” official edition of the Italian Episcopal Conference, 1974 – (last book), 73 “Apocalypse of Giovanni” (a. 94,95 A.C)

Note: This is the only prophetic book of the New Testament.

1:3] “Blessed who reads, and blessed who listen to the words of this prophecy and puts into practice the things that are written here. Because the time is close” || Jesus appears to Giovanni on Patmos island, beautiful and surrounded by seven angels (candles) and as a warning of times to come, orders Giovanni to remember and pass on the message to the angels of the seven Churches (Efeso, Smirne,…).

2:9] to Angel of Smirne: <em>“I know your struggle, your poverty, – still you are rich – and the calumny from those who proclaim themselves Jews and are not, but belong to the synagogue of Satan… the devil is on the verge of throwing some of you in jail…for ten days. If you remain loyal till you die, I will give you the crown of life.” || so here, “we” are being harassed by people who proclaim to be jews (Zionists?) but are not – we must not be tempted, “remain loyal”; and now we see the liars (Zionists?) trying to pervert and denature the sons of Israel (the man, not the modern country, originally Jacob, son of Isaac).

2:14] to angel of Pergamo: “…surrounding you are followers of the Balaam doctrine, who taught Balak to provoke the fall of the sons of Israel, pushing the to eat meats sacrificed to the idols, and to abandon themselves to fornication.” || and here, in his word to the angel of the Philadelphia church, he sends some repented liars (Ashkenazi Zionists?) and warns him of not following their path, the temptation and the wall street style greed.

3:9]“Well, I donate you several from the synagogue of Satan – of those who say they are Jews, but lie because they aren’t –: I will make them come because they will lay at your feet and know that I have loved you. 3:10] Since you have observed with constancy my word, so I will preserve you in the hour of temptation which is coming on the entire world, to put it’s people under scrutiny.” || Christians, the message is clear: beware of worshiping Zionism – not Jews.

Let’s face the facts Israel goated Hamas to fire the rocket by not staying to the peace treaty (that would allow them to get supplies from the borders). Hamas instead of breaking the cease fire made tunnels to Egypt. When Israel found out they blow the tunnel(breaking cease fire) and that MADE Hamas fire rockets at them. So now they use it as a “excuse” to invade Gaza.
They controlled the US media into believing Hamas attacked first but they don’t control the Europe/UN media.

Now how can you say you’re “defending yourself” when you clearly manipulated everything I mean really?
Hamas was ELECTED if that makes Hamas a terrorist group then by all means Bush and the Israely government is far much worse of a terrorist group.

Israel government clearly wants to destroy palestinian (and will shoot down UN shelters inside Gaza to achieve it).

Ether way Hamas is clearly the lesser of two evils when you put the facts up. The only thing they did wrong was firing rockets and not communicating in a nonviolent way as a defence.
