Bush 41 chokes up over Bush 43’s legacy.

In “an unprecedented joint interview” of both Bush presidents, Fox News Sunday guest anchor Brit Hume asked George H.W. Bush (”Bush 41″) how he regards his son’s presidency. “Very positively,” the elder Bush said. “Why?” asked Hume. Bush then began choking up as he responded, “Well, because he can make a tough decision and stay with it. I mean, he’s been tested unlike any other president — with this 9/11. So he passed the test.” Watch it:

Bush 43 then stepped in and said his father was also going to “be judged great.” He was “almost too humble to be president,” the younger Bush said of his father. “And when history finally gets objective, they will be able to say a lot of positive things about George Bush.”

  10. Hemlock for Gadflies says:

I don’t have to wait for history! I can think of LOTS of good things to say about George W. Bush.

For example — as far as I know, he never ONCE wet his pants while in a meeting at 10 Downing Street.

He never, to my knowledge, vomited on a Japanese prime minister, making his presidency a vast improvement over his father’s.

I’m fairly confident he never ONCE so much as picked his nose during a press conference or State of the Union address.

Oh, yeah — I can think of LOTS AND LOTS of nice things to say.

  11. barfly says:

And when history finally gets objective, they will be able to say a lot of positive things about George Bush.”

Eight years, and he’s still the petulant child he ever was.

WRONG! He did not “pass” the “test” of 9/11. He failed miserably. It was the terrorists who succeeded that day, not Bush.

The right-wing keeps acting as if George W. Bush’s presidency started on Sep 12, 2001. They keep talking about how he’s kept us safe ever since, but completely gloss over the very obvious fact that he did not keep us safe on that day! They can’t give him credit for what’s happened since if they won’t assign responsibility to him for what happened before.

Jon Swift has a great post about this. To wit:

After Hurricane Katrina President Bush kept our cities safe.

In the three years and a half years since Hurricane Katrina not a single American city has been destroyed or partially destroyed.

After the October 2008 stock market correction there have been no Great Depression

After the District Attorney firing scandal, the outing of Valerie Plame and other scandals, President Bush restored integrity to government.

    … you get the idea.

  21. barfly says:

I think George is the opposite of that, Shayne. He’s always been the most incompetent of the Bush brothers, with Neal running a sexually-perverted second. 22. Badger says:

And, yes, GHWB sure looks good next to the destruction that his son has wrought, but jeez, talk about lowering the bar. He still was a relative failure as a one-term president, he gave cover to the traitors of Iran-Contra and his mideast policy played a large part in emboldening Saddam to invade Kuwait in the first place.

plus, as has been pointed out, he sired and raised (or hired the people who raised) Dubya.

I know that many liberals think that if they say Bush is a war criminal enough times it will be true (kind of like OJ denying to himself that he murdered his wife), but you need evidence in court, and probably something lawyers call legal precedent. So while your hyperventalating about Bush’s actions, conduct some legal research.

  111. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Um… Hytholday…?

Your commitment to the Rule of Law is admirable, but if you glance around you, you’ll notice that you’re not in a courtoom, so your insistence that TP posters “need evidence” in order to state their opinion that Bush lied us into war is a little overdone, to say the least.

In addition, your claim that you “know that many liberals think that if they say Bush is a war criminal enough times it will be true” might be just as vulnerable to your own Rules of Evidence as one of our claims that you decry.

Surely, if you demand the EugeneDebs produce evidence in a court of law that Bush lied, you should be willing to provide a similar level of evidence that some liberals think the way you characterize them, and some evidence of how you know that.

    Fair is fair, right?

  112. EugeneDebs says:

    Hythloday Says:

I know people like you are far too stupid to ever know what you are talking about but this isnt an English class nor a student thesis. As for Bush there can be NO RATIONAL DISPUTE that he lied us into the war in Iraq. For instance on Sept 7 2002 in a joint press conference with Tony Blair he said “I would remind you that when the inspectors first went into Iraq and were denied—finally denied access [in 1998], a report came out of the Atomic—the IAEA that they were six months away from developing a weapon,” adding, “I don’t know what more evidence we need.”

How about some evidence that actually EXISTS. The IAEA denied there was any such report. Bush pulled it directly out of his ass. In fact the IAEAs actual position in the report they DID make in 98 which is the only time he could have been talking about said that they had destroyed Iraqs nuclear capability in 1991 and had seen no evidence it had been recontituted. Now that isnt a mistake of intelligence that was a LIE if making up a report that doesnt exist isnt a lie there is no such thing. How about the 12 reports he sent to Congress saying the aluminum tubes could ONLY be used as gas centrifuges when OUR OWN SCIENTISTS had UNANIMOUSLY said they were unlikely to be used that way at ALL and it was much more likely they would be used for missiles that Iraq was ALLOWED according to the ceasefire agreement? Your stupidity is so amusing when couched with your condescending tone. The fact you dont know ANYTHING that some rightwing screechmonkey didnt TELL YOU doesnt mean we dont know what we are talking about or that we are wrong in fact it is CLEARLY YOU that is wrong. However your grammer is excellent problem is that isnt all that relevant especially since you are IGNORANT of the facts in the subject matter of your post.

  113. Hythloday says:

ralph the wonder llama – I will respond to you because at least you have the decency to not get into name calling.

It is an opinion website, indeed, and I did not insist on evidence. I asked for it. For an opinion to carry some weight, there must be some evidence to substantiate it, right? In other words an unsubstantiated opinion carries less (or no weight) over one that has appropriate supporing evidence. I am just trying to understand if anyone has based their opinion on any evidence.

Thank you for the evidence. Now we can have a reasoanble discussion about the issue of whether he lied. The evidence you have provided does not prove lying. It could prove that he made a poor decision, but I see nothing that shows that he was intentionally trying to deceive.

Of COURSE it proves lying. HE MADE UP AN IAEA REPORT THAT DIDNT EXIST. IF making up reports that not only dont exist but are the polar opposite of the actual position of the agency you are citing it cannot be anything BUT lying.

    http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9907E1D61038F930A35753C1A9629C8B63

Here is a good synopsis of the whole aluminum tubes issue. It is CLEAR the Bush administration continued to push this story LONG after they had good reason to disbelieve it. They continued to say these tubes could ONLY be used for GCs when our own scientists didnt believe it and sent them a report SAYING SO. They were unanimous on the issue and ridiculed the very idea. Including reports to Congress SAYING EXACTLY THAT. That is a clear lie. When the best evidence is against something yet you continue to tout it WITHOUT DISCLOSING THE CONTRARY EVIDENCE that is lying. Also when the IAEA denied the Sept 02 report existed they made up a series of excuses that ATTEMPTED to keep the claim when NONE of the in any way supported the claim it is as clear a lie as you can ask for.

This TP thread mentions the multiple reports to Congress without mentioning the Energy Dept report (where OUR Gas Centrifute experts reside) and links to another NYTimes report showing it was baloney.

  121. Nevar says:

Poppy Bush is starting to lose his faculties.

  122. Hythloday says:

    EugeneDebs states:

When the best evidence is against something yet you continue to tout it WITHOUT DISCLOSING THE CONTRARY EVIDENCE that is lying.

By your own definition of lying (actually what you described is defined as being disingenuous), you have lied by not disclosing contradictorary evidence.

Let’s begin wtih the February 13, 1998, white paper on Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction produced by the Clinton Administration which stated that

“in the absence of UNSCOM inspectors, Iraq could restart limited mustard agent production within a few weeks, full-production of sarin within a few months….”

Four days later, President Clinton delivered speech in which he said

It is obvious that there is an attempt here, based on the whole history of this operation since 1991, to protect whatever remains of his capacity to produce weapons of mass destruction, the missiles to deliver them, and the feed stocks necessary to produce them.

The UNSCOM inspectors believe that Iraq still has stockpiles of chemical and biological munitions, a small force of Scud-type missiles, and the capacity to restart quickly its production program and build many, many more weapons.

There is more to the case for going into Iraq than what you provided.

Consider UN Resolution 1441. It mandated that, within 30 days, Iraq provide

“a currently accurate, full, and complete declaration of all aspects of its programs to develop chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, and other delivery systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles and dispersal systems designed for use on aircraft, including any holdings and precise locations of such weapons, components, sub-components, stocks of agents, and related material and equipment, the locations and work of its research, development and production facilities, as well as all other chemical, biological, and nuclear programs, including any which it claims are for purposes not related to weapon production or material.”

Hans Blix reported to the UN in May 2003 that stocks of anthrax and VX remained unaccounted for:

“Little progress was made in the solution of outstanding issues. . . . The long list of proscribed items unaccounted for and as such resulting in unresolved disarmament issues was not shortened either by the inspections or by Iraqi declarations and documentation.”

Thus, it is obvious that President Bush did not base his entire rationale for going to war soley on the evidence you provide. What I havve provided is just a sampling of the reasons for going into Iraq. To reply that the whole war was based on lies by only citing one alleged instance, even if true, is disingenuous, or lying by your definition.

  123. ralph the wonder llama says:

Interesting how you frame issues, Hythloday. I give you credit — you’re more meticulous than most trolls.

You produce quotes (no links, I notice, just quotes) that you present as evidence that Bush didn’t lie, yet you fail to address EugeneDebs’s point about the phantom IAEA report (which, if the circumstances fit EugeneDebs’s description, would certainly be evidence of falsehood) nor do you mention the issue of the aluminum tubes that the administration insisted were only fit for weapons development, which was a complete lie.

In short, there are several issues on which the administration can be shown to have delivered false information to the American people (Nigerian yellowcake, mobile weapons labs, the list goes on), and that they knew the information was false at the time they delivered it.

The evidence you provide does nothing to mitigate the damaging implications of the episodes that EugeneDebs offers as evidence. When you move the goalposts by saying “it is obvious that President Bush did not base his entire rationale for going to war soley (sic) on the evidence you provide” (emphasis mine) you’re not making the strong case you think you are, except for people who aren’t paying attention. You appear to be simply trying to accomplish with misdirection what you cannot accomplish with logic and fact alone.

One might even say it is disingenuous.

Now, I will reflect for a moment on just how hard it is to prove someone’s state of mind, but it seems clear from your posts that you want us to adopt, for claims we make on a message board, more rigorous standards of evidence than the New York Times, Washington Post or Wall Street Journal employ, but it ain’t gonna happen.

Personally, I try to stay away from the “Bush lied us into war” claims because, as you say, it is difficult to prove conclusively, and I like to know I’m standing on firm ground with my claims. Others here have no such timidity, and will freely say what they think, regardless of whether anyone else will listen. That’s their privilege. I think they’re right, that Bush did knowingly lie to us, that he wanted to go to war with iraq, and he knew that he had to lie in order to get public support. I can’t prove it to the satisfaction of someone who is predisposed to see it otherwise, but to me, the evidence speaks for itself.

  124. EugeneDebs says:

    Hythloday Says: 125

Your entire post is completely irrelevant to my post and my points they IN NO WAY INVALIDATE THAT BUSH LIED. The best definition of lying in my opinion is purposely giving false information. I clearly showed Bush did that in at least those two instances. What Clinton said or Blix really has nothing to do with THOSE TWO EXAMPLES. Therefore your claim that I was disengenuous or lying because I didnt give arguments YOU LIKE that are completely irrelevant to THE POINT I WAS MAKING is just ludicrous.

Your first point is that Clinton thought Iraq still had chemical weapons stockpiles though we now KNOW THEY DIDNT. OK. He was wrong so what? Lets suppose they DID. Since those weopons degrade rather quickly and in five years would be useless in 2003 how would that in any way be relevant? You ascribe to UNSCOM what BUTLER was saying but Scott Ritter didnt agree. In 03 Russia and France was telling us they DIDNT have such stockpiles and lets remember THEY WERE RIGHT. Also invading a country because of what they MIGHT have is about like kicking your nieghbors door down and shooting him and his entire family then telling the judge he MIGHT have had a gun and MIGHT have attacked me. Remember the CIA said Iraq was NOT a threat to use any weapons they DID have against us in the 02NIE nor allow their weapons to be used by others. NONE OF THIS is relevant to the point I made that BUSH LIED. You didnt come within MILES of refuting a single point I made so you just changed the argument and I assume hoped I wouldnt notice. You really arent very good at this.

  125. ralph the wonder llama says:

Gee, Hythloday, I checked out your website and I must say, for someone who admonishes others to, “reflect for a moment on how hard it is to prove someone’s state of mind” you certainly make a lot of assumptions about other people’s states of mind.

For instance, “I know you just searched the name and that phrase came up first in Google. I also know you always read Cliffs Notes and never understood any literary device (like an allegory, for example) other than at a superficial level, so spare me the “gotcha” moment and leave that to the mainstream media who do as much research and analysis as you just did on my name.”

You seem to have much knowledge of things about which you cannot know. Are you a sorcerer? Or just a blowhard?

Yeah its pretty brave to make vieled threats to people you know you will never meet face to face. Take a pill for that insecurity. I suggest you take off your stupid colored glasses and see the world as it really is. Where no government is perfect and the ONLY way a people make it better is to DEMAND each administration uphold the values the PEOPLE associate with our country. Thomas Jefferson said dissent was the highest form of patriotism and this is why. What IS America to you anyway? Is it the Bush administration? Is it the Government? See to ME its the people that make UP our country. People like you and people like me. We may not agree but that is the wonderful THING about a free country. Our disagreements can end up in greater understanding. Timid men prefer the quiet of despotism to the boisterous sea of liberty. Jefferson again. It seems you want to be a timid man.
