Bush: It ‘may be fair’ to say that ‘Republicans don’t like immigrants.’

In an interview with Fox News’ Brit Hume last week, President Bush said that the Republican Party needed to be “compassionate” on issues like immigration reform so that the party isn’t “viewed as anti-immigrant.” Asked about that sentiment at a press conference today, Bush said that it might be “fair” to say that “Republicans don’t like immigrants”:

BUSH: Take, for example, the immigration debate. That’s obviously a highly contentious issue. And the problem with the initial outcome of the debate was some people said, “well, Republicans don’t like immigrants.” Now, that may be fair or unfair, but that’s the image that came out. And if, you know, the image is “we don’t like immigrants,” then there’s probably someone else out there saying, “well, if they don’t like immigrants, they probably don’t like me as well.”

Watch it:

  1. AlphaLiberal says:

If you add up all the people that Republicans/conservatives don’t lie it’s a majority of the American people: liberals, environmentalists, feminists, labor unionists, gays and lesbians, etc, etc, etc.

Kind of a failing strategy for a political party.

  2. AlphaLiberal says:

    d’ow! “don’t lie” = “don’t like”

  3. CZ-1 says:

And what is Bush concerned about? Image. He concedes the possibility of the fact, but he only speaks to the image.

  4. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

I wasn’t aware that the repugs liked anyone let alone immigrants.

Republicans: Keeping America safe from Americans

  6. CZ-1 says:

Oh, Repubs like anyone with money.

  7. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Add to that women and people of color and Bush is correct. Republicans only like white males, especially rich, white males and white males with IQ’s below 100 (like Joe the unPlumber). Everyone else can just step back.

  8. CZ-1 says:

Did you catch Bush’s comment about drinking? “I’m a Type A personality. I’m not one to wear a straw hat and sit on the beach. Not since I quit drinkin’ anyway.

  9. unbelievable says:

Yesterday he admitted to approving torture, and then today he proves he’s a bigot. He really aught to shut up. Hasn’t he embarrassed us enough?

  10. Cats r Flyfishn says:

“Compassionate and broadminded”… odd thing for Bush to say considering that this is not a policy or philosophy that he follows.

  11. unbelievable says:

I get the feeling that now that he’s no longer Cheney’s hand puppet, Bush feels the need to be cathartic and say what he’s really thinking. He’s proving the adage about it being better to be silent and thought stupid than to open your mouth and prove you are….

  12. Chuck Feney says:

Bush said that it might be “fair” to say that “Republicans don’t like immigrants”

In other news, it is fair to say that immigrants don’t like Republicans.

  13. Curlew says:

It took Chimpy 8 years but he finally spoke an honest statement.

  14. christopher wiwi says:

How many immigrants does he have working for him in Crawford, TX?As far as I am concerned all re-pukes hate America do to their running this country into the ground these last eight years to promote their Fascist dogma and agenda, just check out their PNAC website and the Heritage Foundation website.See ya Georgie Boy I for one hope you land in jail along with the rest of your crime family.

  15. liberalinaredstate says:

I thought I was going to blow a gasket as he gave his laundry list of his mistakes, or “disappointments” When he referred to Abu Gharab as a disappointment,my mouth dropped to the floor. He couldn’t land in Baton Rouge after Katrina because his presence would have hindered the rescue effort! What a deluded narcissistic a**hole
Only the elites don’t like him, and rest of the world really does like America? No Bush you are still drinking, and it’s not a cocktail based in reality.
And one last thing, not only do Republicans dislike immigrants, but they’re blantant Bigots!

  16. avchavis says:

This MF just keeps talking – gotta love it! The more he talks the worse he looks! Where’s my damn shoes?! Just shut the
F%$^k up and go to jail Bush! Take Chaney with you. Tell us something we don’t already know Bush! It’s nothing new that Republicans are all about money and rich white Americans. Thank goodness -just 8 more days of this foolishness!

  17. A Patriot Acting says:

Typical Republican mindset. “Yeah, we don’t like immigrants but we shouldn’t let THEM know that. We need to change our IMAGE so that it’s not obvious to immigrants that we don’t like them.”

  18. dbadass says:

except of course if they are keeping the cost of produce down

  19. Perry logan says:

To speak more plainly, Republicans are howling, frothing, eye-rolling xenophobes. Not to be harsh.

Bush: It ‘may be fair’ to say that ‘Republicans don’t like immigrants….’
    ___________

And blacks… and hispanics… and women, children, Democrats, just about anyone whose skin isn’t lily-white, left-handed people, short people (they got no reason to live…), Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Quakers, Shakers, but Mormons, especially rich ones, are okay… some Jews (the liberal kind…), gays… don’t forget the gays, but just the non-GOOP gays, Hollywood types, anyone who lives in a Big City (they’re just not real Americans)… union members, college professors…

Help me out here… anyone I’m forgetting?

BUT… GOOPers do like pudgy, balding, pasty-faced middle-aged white guys w/ weak or double chins, who ducked military service whilst younger but now love sending someone else’s son or daughter off to war, and may or may not love partying in airport restroom stalls.

  23. tom says:

Thank goodness that was GDumbya’s last press conference. The moron is an embarrassment to himself and to my country. The only compassionate thing to do now is erase the history of the entire past eight years. In return for being let off the hook of history, I think GDumbya should reimburse the U.S. for the cost of his incompetence — let’s see now . . . that would be about a trillion for his bungled wars plus another four trillion or so for his obliteration of our credit and financial markets.

Yup. There you go. Send in the check, GDumbya, and we’ll call it even.

  24. Doc Rock says:

How many Republicans are not immigrants or descended from immigrants? Just about 99.44%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Shayne says:

Republicans only like people who can live off their capital gains. They’re the folks they worry might have to pay taxes.

  26. Doc Rock says:

Check that! How many Republicans are immigrants or descended from immigrants? Just about 99.44%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. jb says:

I guess the law is only useful when progressives find a way to blame the Republicans for all of America’s problems.

Gee, this is just a little pointless and irrational, huh?

Have a real point to make, or are you starting to drink early this week?

  29. Anonymouse says:

This is the one issue that I think Mr. Bush had right. Too bad he’d lashed himself to the HMS Xenophobia to get elected.

  30. Leftside Annie says:

As for me, well, I’m PROUD to be on Chimpy’s Hate List.

  31. jb says:

Dynamo seems to have a gear or a cog missing. Or maybe its a broken staff. Anyway its running off kilter and making no sense.

  32. dbadass says:

Hey there little white guy afraid of the black guy.
Where do you come up with all those lame ass photos/pics?

  33. Buckie Boy says:

    Who do republicans like?

    Fellow corrupt Republicans, sure.

Very rich ‘White’ people who are Republican, sure, got that.

Ignorant, racist, rednecks who are Republican, no sh!t.

Bible thumping, crazy morons who are Republican, they can have em.

Wow, I guess there are a lot of people who Republicans like.

  34. Shayne says:

Hey Dynamo, don’t you have a Klan meeting to attend? It’s not like any of you white trash types have jobs and have to wait for the weekends to shoot cans behind the trailer park. Unless that picture on the right is you, then I apologize.

  35. shoeless says:

    Dynamo Says:

I guess the law is only useful when progressives find a way to blame the Republicans for all of America’s problems.

You won’t have to worry about that much longer, as the Republicans won’t be in a position to f uck things up for a very long time.

  36. Shayne says:

    Buckie Boy Says:

    Who do republicans like?

Ignorant, racist, rednecks who are Republican, no sh!t.

Bible thumping, crazy morons who are Republican, they can have em.

They don’t “like” these people. They’re just the only people dumb enough to vote against their own best interests because Rush and Billo tell them to.

  37. Hoodathunk says:

I’m thinking there are only 2 types of people Republicans like.
Those who are smart enough and greedy enough to amass enough money to hide behind and those who lack the cognitive ability to think for themselves.

  38. Hoodathunk says:

and, btw, they only like the second set in the way most people like their pets.

  39. EugeneDebs says:

    Dynamo Says:

Congratulations on a bone ignorant and still meaningless post. You get your Special Olympics trophy for moronity above and beyond the Wingnut STOOPID level. Didnt see anyone criticise the law and it was your own Cretin in Chief that said it not us. You do KNOW you are a moron right? You ReTARDOcons really are a piece of work. Thanks for the free clown show though the especially stoopid ones like you are the funniest.

  40. Marie says:

Except for native Americans, are not we all immigrants, or their descendants?

  41. Marie says:

Actually I think it’s fair to say that repugs don’t like:
    (not in any specific order)
    immigrants
    women
    minorities
    atheists
    homosexuals
    poor people
    old people
    sick people
    students
    wounded veterans
    workers
    union members

  42. ElBruce says:

Bush used to seem like a promising fellow to deal with immigration in a sensible way, since he’s one of the (very) few republicans who doesn’t seem like a bigoted racist at all, at least where Hispanics are concerned.

However, he has done nothing for immigrants whatsoever in eight years, so that really doesn’t matter. To do something positive about it would involve standing up to his own party and asking them to knock off the game of demonizing and fear-mongering, at least on one subject.

    .

    Marie Says:

Except for native Americans, are not we all immigrants, or their descendants?

Yeah, but every group has tried to slam the door as soon as they got through it.

  43. sacopenapa says:

    The REPUGNANTS don’t like

    DEMOCRACY
    PEACE
    ACCOUNTABILITY
    GENEVA CONVENTION
    THE USA’S CONTITUTION
    SOCIAL REFORM
    THE RULE OF LAW
    THE PLANET
OTHER PEOPLE’S COUNTRY AND MANY MORE…

The DEMOCRATS rubberstamp everything the GOP does.

  44. breid1903 says:

#25 & #27. aaaahhhh if i remember right the indians crossed the bering strait. and/or rafted in from polynesia. making us all immigrants and/or descendants. correct me if i’m wrong.

  45. dbadass says:

well I suppose we are all Africans….

  46. Uosdwis says:

I’ve got to hang on til 2042, but it will be tough. I want to see Republican heads explode when the combined minorities of the US outnumber whites once and for all.

  47. telestai2 says:

The Republic of Stupidity You asked if you had left anyone out? Not many, but you omitted a couple:
    –folks who earn under $500,000 a year;
–folks who believe that the Constitution rather than BushCo pronouncements should be the law of the land

Just found Marie’s list: well done.
